* When Jim first awakens in the hospital, disoriented and confused, what allows him to get out of his room was the fact that someone slipped the key under his door, after having presumably locked it to keep the zombies from reaching him. With how dangerous the infected are, it would likely be very dangerous for someone, presumably a hospital worker or other good Samaritan, to spend that extra time locking the rooms of the patients who physically cannot flee, and then giving them the key to get out later. Even with the great possibility that many may not even be able to awaken and use them later. But someone still did. And those actions are what allowed at least Jim to live.
