Mari is likely a stand-in for his wife Moyoco, who he met after working on ''Evangelion'', the EarnYourHappyEnding is representative of Anno finally finding happiness after years of depression and struggle, and Shinji erasing the Angels and Evangelions from reality to create a better world represents Anno finally moving on his life from both his depression and ''Evangelion''.
