* The entire final battle with Liquid Ocelot counts as this in a way. It's the ultimate showdown between you and your greatest rival. One last enemy to be defeated. And by God does Liquid gives as good as he gets, so you might get quite a few of game overs. The kicker is that the word 'Exit' has been changed to 'Exist', and when you select it, you hear Liquid just screams "It's not over yet!" before giving you another chance to rethink your decision. That's right, the game itself doesn't want you to give up. You've come so far and overcome every odds that's been thrown at you (even moreso if you have played through all the previous games), and there's only one obstacle between you and the ending of the entire series. This is especially meaningful on harder difficulties, where you're sure to get A LOT of game overs fighting Liquid. And the way he tells you that it's not over could imply that deep down, he wants you to win. The BigBad of the game wants you to win. If that's not heartwarming, I don't know what is.

** Even better, to remind you of everything you've gone through, Retraux the game will switch HUDs throughout phases of the battle, switching your health bars and the names of your characters to the heroes of old to make you remembers just how much history is taking place and riding on you to win.

** There's also Big Boss saluting The Boss' grave, which is also an understated CrowningMomentOfAwesome. He's so weak, even sitting up is hard, but he stands at attention. His arm trembles as he tries to lift it, but as soon as his hand reaches his forehead, he forces himself to stop shaking and deliver a proper salute to the woman who defined his life.

* From the novelization, which is narrated from the perspective of Otacon, after 's death: "I have new friends and plenty of little Metal Gears to be my assistants. But isnít with me. The legendary warrior, the man who made the impossible possible, [[spoiler: Solid Snake, is no longer part of this world. I wonít tell you in this book how long he lived after Big Boss set off on his voyage from that cemetery, or what kind of life he had. All Iíll say is that his last days were peaceful. He passed gently, simply falling asleep with a smile on his face. When I thought back to the days and nights heís spent in constant battle, I found great solace in this."]] Although it's also an extreme TearJerker, it's also extremely heartwarming to know that after a lifetime of war and tragedy that was able to live out his last days peacefully as he had hoped, and with his friend Otacon by his side to the end, just as he promised.

* After , the FROGS, now suffering a mental breakdown due to their nanomachines being shut down, are helped aboard the Missouri and treated for wounds. One of the FROGS is even seen cradling another and patting her head on a lifeboat.
