Here's one for you guys: anyone got a reason why Itex never got a visit from a SEAL? Surely a company like that can't keep birdkids secret from the MILITARY...if they're supposedly as much a danger as the Flock makes them, why were they never eliminated?

** If Iggy being able to do all this stuff while blind bothers you, I'm sure having giant wings, hollow bones, air sacks, powers, a flying, talking dog, and men that can change into wolves must put you in a blind rage huh?

** JP never actually comes out and says that it's that it's dirty blonde. He alternates between brown and blonde, depending on what book it is. I've heard tell that it gets blonde in the summer and brown in the winter, although that may just be fan speculation.

Added DiffLines:

** There's also the question of how they can POSSIBLY hide 15 foot long wings behind their backs. The manga is even worse about this, because in one frame their wings extend from above their head almost to their feet...and in the next frame they've completely disappeared.

*** I'm going with my head canon that, in actuality, Itex was on the brink of falling apart by itself and holding on by the tips of it's metaphorical fingers with one hand not knowing what the other was doing, but the Flock never knew. The By Half Plan never existed (As we never hear anything about how it works, this seems plausible) and the name and idea was merely put there to keep the completely-insane and mercy-kill worthy Director happy, the Flock and the other experiments were created Aperture Science-style as last-gasp money grabbers and nothing else, and after the police came in the whole company simply imploded and was absorbed by its hungry competitors.

Just one question. How the hell did six kids escape The School, which has to be 3very powerful if it can hire scientist to do illegal experimentation and not get caught, even if they had Jeb's help!

** It seems to be a "steal to survive" thing. Taking food from an empty cabin, stealing money/credit cards from people to buy food, stealing cars, of course no one would do those things under normal circumstances. But these are bird kids who are constantly on the run, there's no telling when they'd be able to get their next meal so they eat when they can. They wouldn't steal a car unless they had to get somewhere fast and they couldn't fly there for whatever reason.

* About Iggy's parent's, it's stated multiple times that he was kidnapped in the hospital, but once the father says that he was taken from their home. That's probably a [[SeriesContinuityError error in the coninuity]], this is a more headscratchers question: If they were able to look him over enough to realize he had a birthmark in a specific place (near his hip or some other place where it wouldn't really be obvious if I remember right), how did they not notice wings coming out of his back? Max even stated that when Angel was a baby she had "Weird little chicken wings", so they have them when they're young.

**You're right that this is extremely weird, even given the premise of the story. For instance, in The Angel Experiment, Max is convinced that she is a test-tube baby. While it's true that she can still have parents who donated an egg and sperm, the likelihood of the bird kids having been live babies carried to term by their human mothers is slim in this respect--because they were born with wings. Either at least the mother would have to be compliant to the plan--Jeb stated that [[spoiler:he and Dr. Martinez agreed to donate their genetic material to create Max]]--with full knowledge of the results, or Itex would have to be doing some seriously wonky stuff to pregnant ladies. (In what is generally considered to be the beta idea for the Maximum Ride series, When the Wind Blows/The Lake House, pregnant women have their fetuses modified in utero without their knowledge, and then the doctors in control tell them they have miscarried when they deliver the baby.) This troper cannot realistically see a bird baby being born non-bird and then later having their DNA modified while they are fully-formed.

** There's a scene in the first book where they steal a guy's credit card or something (I don't remember exactly, sorry) and justify it by saying he was a jerk. But he didn't actually do anything to them, he was just being rude to someone he was speaking with on his phone. That bit always puzzled me, not because of the stealing but because of how they justified it.

** I always thought that stealing is slot easier when no one is around, the cabin had obviously been uninhabited for awhile and what they took was mostly little desperately needed things, like food. In New York with thecae however, there was people there, and they could actually see the consequences, such as getting pulled over and being found out by the law for the stolen car and then the fact that they have wings. So, I don't thinks it's about their morals so much as how risky would it be for me to take such and such.

* What is with the flock and stealing? They seem to bounce from being ok with it to being uncomfortable with it in the first book. First they break into a cabin and take a lot of food plus a backpack, then they take from a campsite, and later they wonder if taking a car is the right thing to do and Max says stealing is their last resort when theyre in New York.

* So [[WhateverHappenedToTheMouse what happened to those other expiriments]] that the Flock freed in the first book? There are a few issues with it. First, why didn't the Flock go with them? These are other people just like them, and they aren't even going to interact or try to make plans? Second, why didn't they make sure they got to safety first? A lot of them were obviously very weak and sick, it just makes me assume that nearly all of them were recaptured almost immediately after they escaped. Three... What was the point? ** What was the point of the "It was all just a dream" bit?! I don't think it fooled anyone. Mainly because if the whole book series was a dream then there probably wouldn't have been so much left in the third book. But seriously, all it seemed to do was serve as a shocking swerve that ends up going nowhere. Waste of paper! Then again, considering how many shocking swerves that go absolutely no where there are in the later books, perhaps this troper shouldn't complain.

[[WMG: The Final Warning]]
* This book is where it goes downhill. Saving the penguins is good and all... but REALLY? This used to be a great series about genetically modified kids fighting to survive, and now it's all about PENGUINS.
* The bomb in the pizza. BigLippedAlligatorMoment to the [[IncrediblyLamePun max!]]
* This Book also has F-15s chasing the flock. And they run away. From Supersonic Jets.
* I stopped reading after this book. Granted, the first three books did have their flaws, but they were overall enjoyable. Things turned to crap when the storyline went from the more exiting and suspenseful "mutant bird kids running and hiding from mad scientists" to a GreenAesop story so preachy about global warming that Al Gore would be annoyed with it. I mean, I'm all for saving the environment, but good God, what was with that annoying, preachy plot shift?
* I agree with the above troper; this book was so heavy-handed in it's GreenAesop that it wasn't even enjoyable. And what the hell was with the brain-thing?

[[WMG: MAX(Book)]]
* In this book, Max said that she once drove a TANK and the only other thing she said about it is that it "Smells like old socks". No where, when, why or how she got her hands on this MILITARY vehicle is ever given.

[[WMG: FANG(Book)]]
* I hate the ending, I just hate it. You take the perfect 'ship, add a little drama, and BLAM. [[spoiler:'Goodbye, Max, see you in 20-30 years!']]
** I thought it was touching, but the prospect of having the bland Dylan and no tall, dark, sometimes snarky stoic... blugh.
* When Max and Fang go to Vegas.]] I mean, Vegas? You know there's supposed to be a plot to these, right?
* I can't be the ONLY one who saw that ending coming.

* Patterson, do you seriously hate kids or something? 'Cause I gotta tell ya, having my 21-year-old heart crushed into a million pieces after reading ''Angel'' was '''not''' something I ever wanted to experience. If I'd known this series would eventually make me depressed, almost suicidal, and feel absolutely, mind-numbingly hopeless about Max, Fang and everyone ''ever'' getting a HappyEnding of ''any kind'', I would have '''never''' picked up volume one. Now I get to bury the happy tidbits along with all the NightmareFuel, sell off my collection, and repress as much of ''Maximum Ride'' from my consciousness as I can. [[PrecisonFStike Thanks a fucking lot, man.]]
* In the first part, Max states how she never thought of how the Flock could have come from different bird genes. However, in a previous book she says what species DNA each member had.

* What happened to Celeste, anyway? The bear just... disappeared. That bugs me, cause in order to get it, Angel had to MIND CONTROL an innocent bystander.

* Angel. You are not leader, you are not Max. You will never be either unless suddenly the flock has young children and then it splits up and you get the young ones for a 'mini flock'. I'm sick and tired of a six... seven year old trying to overrule 3 14/15 year olds, a 12/13 year old, and a 8/9 year old!
** I disagree - I wish Patterson had done more, earlier with Angel wishing she could take over. It would have made books two and three even more interesting if she had been having a leadership tussle with Max.
*** Agreed. If she had used her powers to mind control the other Flock members or even innocent bystanders into getting the position. Threating their lives or useing them to fight Max. Though, I would love to see a [[SanitySlippage breakdown]], too, considering how taxing it could be on her. I mean, just the strain alone should be tiring.
* Holy crap, here we go. Angel is supposed to be a sweet, innocent character who the reader loves and wouldn't want anything to happen to. By the time I read Fang, I really hated this kid. She almost got most of the flock killed, was a complete idiot, and nobody said anything. They honestly let a very under qualified six year old take over.
** She has been called out for stupidity, actually. I remember an instance in the first book; when Angel confessed knowledge about the flock's families a day after escaping the School, Iggy did call her an idiot. This troper freaking ''CHEERED''.
* I despise this girl. She's not cute. She's incredibly creepy. No one calls her out on MIND CONTROLLING PEOPLE, and honestly, nobody's even really SCARED of her. If there was a small girl in your "family" with the ability to MANIPULATE YOUR MIND, wouldn't there be a LITTLE more paranoia?
** Two things. One, if we believe the first book, her creepyness is fairly recent, and two, since Angel does mind control people with no qualms, how do we know she hasn't always been doing that, Flock included, and that's why there's no paranoia. Admittedly, this theory does make her way creepier, but it also makes a bit of sense.
* How has no one mentioned the fact that she just gets random powers for no reason? Honestly, it got pretty ridiculous when she was getting more powers than everyone else without explanation.
** I agree. In the first book, she already have the power to read minds. But within a short time, she gains the power to mind control, telepathy, breathing underwater, and some sort of other phystic power (similar to TheDeadZone). This propelled her to MarySue status due to her young age, and the protenial of taking over the world...[[TakeThat I'm going to use her in an essay]] to explain to a teacher the concept of a Mary Sue.
* When the hell did Angel get her own "voice"? Patterson doesn't exactly explore the concept much...

[[WMG: Total and/or Akila]]

*** But he was seemingly kept in a lab for most of his life and just seems to understand culture more than the Flock do. Maybe he just has a know-it-all personality, but it just seems...off
* Am I the only troper who thought that Total suddenly growing wings - after he said he needed them - was a little too convinient?
** Granted, he's not very good with them.
* Why did they decide to take Akila with them? Honestly, that would only slow them down, and there's no advantage to it.
** Did they even ''own'' Akila? Didn't she belong to someone else?
** I believe what happened was Angel took her and Total out to find a penguin or something and they got stuck in that crevice. Max and Fang, who had to rescue them, were caught in a blizzard and barely made it to them; I doubt they were willing to turn around and return Akila just for courtesy purposes. They were then captured right out of the blizzard. There was no space for them to bring her back in that book- [[PlotHole but I don't see why they never did.]]
* Just finished "Fang", and I have to ask: [[spoiler: Total and Akila's ''wedding'']]. Where did that come from? Why was that even neccessary?

[[WMG: The Flock in General]]

*** As has been noted before, such as when Max got her makeover, Max and Fang can look older by years.

[[WMG: Ella and/or Mrs. Martinez]]
* This is more rhetorical than anything, but seriously, what is with Ella lately? In ANGEL, [[spoiler:she runs off for the most trivial reason ever into the arms of the unknown- [[TooDumbToLive who by the way have given]] ''[[TooDumbToLive her half-sister, the flock, her own MOTHER and indirectly HER]]'' [[TooDumbToLive hell for the past 15 years- just to get some]] ''[[WhatAnIdiot freaking wings?]]'']] Really, Ella? It really upsets me because it's one thing when a [[MoralityPet physically useless]] but likeable character gets trouble brought to them (ie., the Doomsday brainwashing in ANGEL). But it is another thing entirely to deliberately run off and go looking for trouble. Not to mention some fans (though not me, I love Eggy) were already unhappy with her new relationship with Iggy. I hope she comes back safe and does something useful in the last book.

* Just... just... ARGH! I know the scientists created him to be "perfect"(for Max at least) but SERIOUSLY! He's a poorly written Mary Sue and incredibly bland. Here's hoping he gets some characterization in the next book.
** I could say the same for many of the characters, but as always, YMMV. [[YorTheHunterFromTheFuture Of course, the idea of our resident 'caveman' jerking off into a plastic cup is rather funny.]]
** It was somewhat refreshing that in ANGEL, when the reader is literally surrounded by [[CharacterDerailment severely derailed]] [[JerkAss jerkasses]] like [[TroubledButCute Fang]] and [[BitchInSheepsClothing Angel]], Dylan was the only one who remained consistently mild-tempered and kind, despite his extreme blandness. Well, something tells me [[PairTheSpares he'll be gotten rid of by the end of the series,]] [[MurderTheHypotenuse if the fandom has anything to say about it.]]
*** Also, the cop out suicide thing. Seriously, what the hell? He appears to commit suicide, then it runs out he didn't. Why was that scene even there?
**** And was it even mentioned again in ANGEL? All I remember is a fast forward to Dylan flirting with Max at Dr. Martinez' house. It literally seemed like Patterson just [[{{Retcon}} forgot about it]]. Now that's just ''embarassing.''
***** He's said to have "incredible sight" and...what did he use it for? Watching meteors....yeah...
****** I think he might be evil because in book 7 he didn't use any of his sight to try and save Angel or anyone else, also he could have see the Erasers coming in book 6 and someone did ask him why he didnt and HE DIDN'T REPLY!
* The fact that his healing thing changed dramatically between ''Fang'' and ''Angel''. Seriously. In ''Fang'' he could heal himself with his saliva. And then suddenly in ''Angel'' he can recover from a bullet wound in a couple of ''minutes''.
* Who wants Dylan to die horribly in the next book and Fang gets back with Max? I do :)
[[WMG: The Characters in General/Other Characters]]
* I hate how the characters are so over-powered. When the blind character can practically see, you know things are getting ridiculous.
** This troper could have stood the power-ups if they were justified, like if there was a set number and they came out under the right conditions, and it was exactly the things they needed to save the world, but it was up to them to figure out how to manage the powers. Come book four, it's basically "Oops, you're going to start getting powers randomly. Sorry!" And they are hardly bothered by that!
** Completely agreed. They're 2% percent bird. ''That's it.'' The most they should have is what, pointy toes like talons? Slightly better eyesight? I honestly can't even see how they can fly. And how long can their endless array of powers be justified before the WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief snaps? Some of their inhuman attributes have nothing to do with birds, especially Angel's, and are never negative. At least the Erasers seem to have somewhat minimal control over their animalistic hunger and bloodlust in exchange for their strength. Somebody please explain this madness to me.
** I just realized you're right. All of you. 2% bird, 98% human, so where the heck are all these powers coming from?! If Patterson would be so kind as to give a scientific explanation, such as splicing species having some sort of effect on the brain, that would be great!
* This troper is starting to notice that there are no brunettes (or very little) in the series. There are blonds. There are a lot of blonds. There are people with black hair. There's even an occasional redhead. But this troper can't remember any characters with brown hair. Except for Max. [[SeriesContinuityError Sometimes.]] And Jeb and Ari, but they used to be blonds.
* The Gen. 77 kids from Angel. I thought the overpowering the flock was annoying, but apparently the best way to keep things interesting when [[ThirtySuePileup the flock]] is irritating readers is to introduce a new, ''[[BeyondTheImpossible more irritating]]'' group of superhumans! I'm seriously doubting that the by the last book the teenagers in Fang's flock can be made remotely likeable.

[[WMG: The Writing or Overall Plotline]]
* Overall plotline? What overall plotline?
* The writing. JUST HOLY CRAP the writing. It wouldn't be so bad with the books being rather episodic if they had started out episodic, but the first three books seemed to be following a grand plotline about the kids' origins and finding their parents and getting rid of the School... which is promptly dumped for episodic environment saving in ''The Final Warning''. And piled on top of that is the erratic character development, the random picking up and dumping of various plot threads, the sudden revelations that have effects for only a few chapters, the random skills and powers gained that see one or two uses for plot convenience and then never appear again. And just about every character being a caricature/stereotype, random viewpoints, dropped characters, several WhatHappenedToTheMouse moments... This series is an extreme wall banger if you stop to think about anything that's happening in it. It's like James Patterson thought that he could just write crap down and as long as it was fast-paced and kind of actiony, people would eat it up (which unfortunately they have). As an amateur writer who actually gives a crap about things like continuity and intelligence and consistent writing to make a good story, this series is entirely INFURIATING.
** Agreed, though I personally enjoyed the first three.
** Seconded. And is it this troper, or does the series seem to just have the kids be constantly thrown into places for no reason? Like in the third book, the Voice tells Max to look up the Schools in Europe. When she finds the one in England though, the Voice is totally "Oh no, don't actually ''do'' anything there. Just look at it from the bushes and then find the main one". Erm, really?
** Third...ed? This troper thinks all copies of every book after the third need to be gathered and buried deep in a desert somewhere, never to be read again.
* If there is ONE MORE BOOK about Global Warming saving the penguins blah blah blah, this Troper will puke and announce [[FanonDiscontinuity discontinuity]] to the general public.
** At the same time?
* The overall change in the way things happen from about the 4th book onward. The first three books where the flock had to fight for survival and keep a low profile worked great, but the flock having adults supporting them, and becoming celebrities in the sixth book just doesn't work.
* ThisTroper is selling off all my books, even the manga incarnations (with the pretty sweet art), and repressing as much of the series from my brain as I possibly can. Thanks largely in part to ''Angel: A Maximum Ride Novel'' which might as well have been called ''Angel: Now there's no hope or happiness for '''anyone.''''' It's like, even with the funny moments and the occasional cute or cool moments, this book is almost exclusively a gigantic F-You to anyone not wanting to become suicidally depressed and hopeless about the series getting an EarnYourHappyEnding. I mean, Jesus Christ, Patterson! WTH? [[spoiler: Max and Fang will probably never get back together and be happy? The solution to saving the world is "kill all humans"? [[SarcasmMode Oh, GREAT message to give to your young, impressionable readers]] And what? MarySue BitchInSheepsClothing Angel has, like, multiple-personality-disorder and just ''suddenly'' turns good and helpful and sweet again? Yeah, that's it. I hate you.]]
* I don't know if it's just me, but I HATE hate hate the writing style. Within two chapters I was like "what is this an old man trying to be a little girl?" [[spoiler: It is.]] It's like he forgot what it was like to be not 60+ and tried too hard. Max sounds like a thirteen-year-old pretending to be cool.
* This troper, when only about 2 books in, had already sought out this page on Tvtropes and the one on TheOtherWiki, thus having absorbed all the plot spoilers and such. She just realized that the only thing that kept her reading this [[TakeThat plot-hole swiss cheese, unrealistic and borderline literary filth]] was to see [[JustHereForGodzilla where the shippings went.]]
* 1) CHOOSE A DARN HAIRCOLOR! 2) Can't get a girl? Date her clone! WTF? 3) Have you seen the mange? Fang and Iggy look like girls, Max turned 19, and Nudge is now a 22 year old [[ButNotTooBlack white hooker chick with a extreme tan.]] Way to draw. 4) I'm Max! I'm badass! 5) Hippie Fang is one of the worlds scariest creations. Period. Summary: [[TakeThat I know a friking 10 year old who writes better then him.]]
* You know what's a shame? Patterson used to be one of my favorite authors and I love most of his "adult" books. But, with Maximum Ride...damn, what happened to him? It's like he just assumed that kids are stupid and that they'll eat up any shit that's served to them.
[[WMG: Fanfics]]

* I realize the fictions in alternate universes are loads better then the story. LOADS.
[[WMG: Mary Sues]]

What's with this author and Mary Sues. There's Angel (and maybe the rest of the flock) and then there's Daniel X and the fact that a lot of the aliens are considered more powerful than {{Superman}}.

[[WMG: Other JBM]]
* The fact that most of these entries seem to be written by Fang/Max fangirls who seem to care more about the ship than the plot.
** [[TakeThat What plot?]]
*** Oooh, ''burn.''
* Will someone kindly explain to me why, in a fandom based on a written work, very few can spell 'ter Borcht'?

to:

[[WMG: Lissa and/or Bridgid]]
* The way the fandom treats them as hussies and sluts for being friendly with Fang. Honestly.
** Now, Bridgid I can understand. He /is/ a minor, and I doubt she is. Lissa, I cannot, besides the FAXFAXFAX thing.

[[WMG: Dylan]]
* Just... just... ARGH! I know the scientists created him to be "perfect"(for Max at least) but SERIOUSLY! He's a poorly written Mary Sue and incredibly bland. Here's hoping he gets some characterization in the next book.

* I agree with the above troper; this book was so heavy-handed in it's GreenAesop that it wasn't even enjoyable. And what the hell was with the brain-thing.

** Well, I don't know much about wingspan to body length ratio, so I won't say anything about that. However, contrary to popular belief, hollow bones are just as strong (maybe even stronger, according to some scientists) and as heavy as solid bones. Even though they're hollow, they're actually very dense.
