**Considering how long it took them to realize that it was Melna walking in their direction.. I think it's safe to say they weren't that smart to begin with, and were probably put on guard duty just so they'd be out of the way.

** Actually, at one point of the comic (I believe it was when Luna went on her spirit walk), it was hinted that people did try magical means to remove their tusks, but Thuen's curse ensured that no method worked properly.

** But then you remember, the cult founder was Raf MaLiksh, who was BOTH the Champion of Law and the Champion of Chaos during his time. Basically, it was a nice way of showing that even though he supposedly embraced chaos, there was still a large mess of the Law Abider he once was. FridgeBrilliance, if you ask me.

* Siggy. He beats the crap out of the corrupt knights in that one arc, delivers a speech about how justice applies equally to everyone and not FIVE PANELS LATER lets a necromantic golem made by a guy who crucified him to a wall go because the Deegans vouch for him. WTF.
** But Quilt hadn't done anything. What justice is there in persecuting someone for what their "parent" did. What should really bug you is that Siggy himself murdered an innocent family of Orcs and is delivering a speech about justice.
** For the sake of argument, it's not comparable to persecuting someone for what their parent did so much as it is to say, investigating a robot built by a known murderer. Quilt was a construction of Jacob, not his son.
** Hypocrisy is pretty much Siggy's defining character trait. The only way in which that was out of character was that it ''helped'' the Deegans for a change.
*** Really, though, other than racism and violence hypocrisy, he's a pretty nice guy. (Barring recent events.) It doesn't make the least bit of sense that he would take the advice of the (admittedly estranged)family of a guy who stuck him to a wall about one of said guy's creations. And even so, I think investigating anything jacob did would be wiser than assuming it's harmless because he abandoned it.
**** ''Wiser''? Siggy? ''Seriously?'' Siggy's NOT WISE. He's impulsive, self-righteous, and makes snap judgements. He let Quilt go because he ''just felt like letting Quilt go''.
***** Was I the only one who thought the characters' consternation and shock to discover that Sigfried went to Hell was bizarre? Look, folks, the guy was an asshole, full stop.

** Better question: Why doesn't anybody's basic biology resemble a real person?
*** Because it's a ''comic strip''. You might as well ask why [[Main/PennyArcade Gabe]] is more pear-shaped than human-shaped.
*** Penny Arcade is heavily stylized, and is purposely cartoony. Things like in Dominic Deegan come off as more of a failing attempt at animesque and is rather awkward.

* Did Mookie really think no one would notice that he stole the [[http://www.dominic-deegan.com/view.php?date=2007-12-21 scene]] where [[spoiler: Dominic proposes to Luna]] from Scrubs?
** Dude, have you never heard of the terms "shout out" or "homage"? Does it have to be that he "stole" it?
*** In that case, why did Mookie allow such an important, plot-centric scene to be so completely taken over by a "shout out"?
*** Shout-outs and homages should be recognized as such, but I don't recall seeing any such claim in the author comments the day that strip came out.
**** What? I'd bet that well over half of the examples on the Shout-outs page were never confirmed as such by anyone.
**** Point, but I guess these things range from "too obviously a shout out to be considered anything but" to "plagiarism" and for many people, this is falling too close to the latter, since the extent of it is basically a single line ripped from Scrubs (with none of the hallmarks of a shout-out, such as an otherwise out of context reference- i.e. if Dominic or Luna had made some comment about doctors or something- or a humorous situation.)
*** There ''are'' no "hallmarks of a shout-out". The shout-out ''is'' the reference, and the vast majority of {{Shout Out}}s aren't followed by something else just to [[DontExplainTheJoke make sure you get it]].
*** This troper was pretty sure it was ripping off scrubs too. He gives no indication whatsoever that this was supposed to be a reference to anything. Maybe someone's just trying to be a little too generous for Mookie so they're trying to let his lack of creativity for that vastly important moment in the story slide?
* SuperGreg. Just... fuckin' SuperGreg.
** That just ''bugs'' you? Not easily riled, are you?
** What's wrong with SuperGreg?
** Jesus, what's right with SuperGreg?
** Possibly nothing. But what's wrong with SuperGreg?
** SuperGreg is hilariously lame. It's a ball of pure, undiluted awesome that would be unpleasantly MartyStu-ish (once he learned to [[spoiler: quit leaving the white fire on all the time]], anyway) if it wasn't wrapped in such a goofy... wrapper. * The StrawmanPolitical example on the main page. [[Film/ThePrincessBride I do not think it means what they think it means]]. Granted I could see room for complaint about the flashback of Siggy lynching that Orc family as an AssPull to kick Siggy past the MoralEventHorizon, but to call it an example of a StrawmanPolitical is basically saying, "You know, people who think people of different races and cultures are a lesser grade of people ain't so bad."
** All right. People who think people of different races and cultures are a lesser grade of people ain't so bad. That doesn't make them any less ill-informed, racist, and dangerous, but it does mean that a good majority of them don't lynch children for fun. Thinking ''all racists'' are lets people who think that they're ''very'' progressive write idiocy like [[http://dominic-deegan.com/view.php?date=2009-02-13 this]]. Siggy can neither argue his side, even for the slightest approximation of effectiveness, and is placed at the far most extreme position on the matter possible.
*** Which makes it an AssPull or even CharacterDerailment, but not a StrawmanPolitical. For it to be a StrawmanPolitical the original position has to have some conceivable merit but is being [[{{Flanderization}} Flanderized]] to make the position appear meritless. Calling the wannabe Chthulu eye-beast 'Snuggles McHuggingtion' is just silly, but making an argument that kinda-sorta back-door legitimizes the Ku Klux Klan and Nazism? [[DudeNotFunny Dude, not funny]].
**** Agreed with poster directly above me. Not to sound like a school special, but thinking that others are of lesser grade based on religion and race has been noted as a bad thing. You don't have to be a child lyncher to be a bad person. Nonetheless, the history of his prejudice shows one of small-minded bigotry. It's one thing if he has been wronged by orcs in the past (and would have made an interesting story), but the backstory of his racism is "orcs are lesser than me". That is a negative, and when your as violent and impulsive as he, it doesn't bode well on him. Being blindly prejudice is one thing. Being and out &out racist is something else, and, sorry to say, you won't find much sympathy for them. If you want to feel that rasists are decent people, then you must not be part of that hated race.
**** Re-reading the arguments calling this a StawmanPolitical, are you arguing that racism is at all "progressive"? Can anyone explain that? Care to share some examples of "progressive" racism? You are right that being a racist doesn't automatically make you a sociopath, and I will agree that it was handled clumsily this comic. But Progressive? The above (above) poster is right, it seems you are excusing KKK & Nazism to an extent. Racism is a negative, and while we all harbor our own little prejudices, it does not make it right to act upon them. So yes, a racist is bad. The president could do great things for this country, he won't be called into office (if he isn't impeached) if he is a racist, as he represents this ocuntry.
* The casual racism. Dressing up as a racial minority for Halloween isn't ''that'' bad -- people used to do cowboys and [[strike:Indians]] [[strike:Native Americans]] Indians for Halloween without meaning or presenting any monstrous intent from the cowboy or Indian perspective. "Orcs are not a subtle people", the creepy "claiming" ritual, and dozen other things.
** Not quite sure what you mean about a minority Halloween costume, but the other things? Acknowledging cultural particulars isn't racism. Donovan's not saying Orcs are too stupid for subtlety, he's saying they tend towards forthrightness.
*** Probably Luna gets away with it because her best friend is an Orc, and she has a little bit of the Deeganverse equivalent of NWordPrivileges; plus, hey, she's already got the tusks. If you think of it that way, it skips past MoralDissonance and right into RefugeInAudacity.
*** But there's a difference between acknowledging cultural particulars and making blanket assumptions about a group based on the group's race. Just because it's a favorable stereotype doesn't make it any less of one -- and, given what we've seen elsewhere, probably an inaccurate one. We don't consider it acceptable in the real world to say "Oh, he's African-American, so obviously he knows about basketball and rap." It's statistically true that Asian-Americans have lower odds of either committing or being the victim of violent crime, while African-Americans are more likely to be in either category, but saying so as a policy matter is racist and inaccurate when you can point out a rather more apt comparison in affluence.
**** The phenotypic differences between human races are extremely minor, and to make blanket statements about their behaviour is as such inaccurate. The phenotypic differences between the orcs and humans in the strip, although both are probably of the same species (Melna refers to the possibility of Luna having orc ancestry when they meet) are much greater. There's no reason to suppose that there aren't behavioural differences as well as physical ones; if there are, then such statements could be accurate observations.
* The recent reveal that Luna is apparently TheChosenOne of the Orc race, and that her tusks were apparently a mark of that, JustBugsMe. I wouldn't call myself a hater, but for some reason this development really irks me. Maybe it's because this gives Luna (who I've never really liked to be honest) another level of GodModeSue and CanonSue. Or maybe because it has some shades of MightyWhitey (the only one who can save the Orcs and still connect with their gods is a non-Orc). Or maybe because it's trying to turn one of the few "flaws" Luna has into a divine gift. ItJustBugsMe. Hopefully the vision quest she's about to go on will give a decent explanation, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
** So far, it's looking less like she's a ChosenOne and more like she just lucked out by not offing herself and eventually getting over the tusks (which aren't unique to her).
** Well, though Luna was the only one we saw with the tusks, I don't think it was ever meant to be that she was the ''only'' one with them. When Melna first meets her, she says she's got "a case of tusk-mouth," which to me implied that it was a documented condition, if a rare one.
*** Then again, it's heavily implied that that she's the only one with the tusks who's actually happy with her life - something that would've been impossible if she'd had them removed.
*** I always considered it a breaking-the-cycle sort of thing. Her tusks were a curse from the Shintula Chief, who was angry at the slaughter of the Tienchek tribe by Callan. In her helping the orcs, she refused to continue the cycle, and thus broke the demonic corruption. As usual in DD, a good baseline that just wasn't polished out well enough.
* Dominic's treatment of Reinholdt so far JustBugsMe. Yes, Reinholdt made a racist remark targeting Luna in a previous story arc. Dominic already got him back for that by insinuating that he would die old, lonely, and unloved. Not to mention that Reinholdt agreed to help them in Maltak for little or no pay in the first place. And that he hasn't said anything rude about the Orcs or Luna since. Yet Dominic treats him like he's the embodiment of everything wrong with Callan: racism, corruption, etc.; despite the fact that Reinholdt really doesn't have those traits. Of course, since Dominic is the MarySue of the comic, Reinholdt will probably end up having skeletons in his closet, such as raping Orc babies or something, to justify this dislike.
** Or Dominic will realize that he's being a complete ass and apologize about it later. Reinholdt has already had to smack him one for being a jackass.
** Reinholdt's already done something awful. He called Luna "piggart-lips" just as soon as they left with Dominic. Not even Siggy went that far in insulting Luna. He then had the balls to ask Dominic about his future, like he was entitled to it or something. Something like that is gonna linger, and Dominic does hold grudges, especially against people who are rude to Luna. Also, Dominic doesn't know what we know about his history. We saw him talking to Cassafinn, but I highly doubt she's tell Dominic or Luna something that was told in confidence, especially after how Dominic was so rude to him. Dominic doesn't really know that Reinholdt's changed that much, so he's not gonna suddenly be nice to him.
*** Agreement on all other points, but "not even Siggy went that far"? You do recall his utter rejection of her because of her tusks was that last straw that made her want to kill herself, right?
*** Yes, but he never used the P-word. He mentions her tusks, calls her ugly and says she looks like an orc, but he never used that word when referring to Luna.
*** Eh, it's not all about what words you use. Remember, when they first met, Siggy was a visiting lord and knight, and Luna was the daughter of a noblewoman, so that's probably the main reason why he didn't actually call her a piggart or some derivative; it's one thing to call her such, but to insult a member of a noble family so openly is another. Either way, he nearly drove her to suicide, which is probably a little worse than calling her a name.
*** Her mother nearly drove Luna to suicide. Siggy, while he had a significant role toward the end, was not responsible for it. He was a pawn, not a major player the way Croona or Brakkis were. He did nothing but get freaked out by a girl with tusks. Also, he wasn't in a polite circumstance when he came back thinking Dominic was some kind of tyrant. Yes, Jayden and Milov were there, but that was a mission, not a formal gathering. He beat up two unarmed people (Gregory couldn't use his staff because he needed it to walk) just for getting in the way, one of whom was crippled and not a real threat. If he was gonna use the p-word, he would've, and probably a few others. Siggy's an ass, but he apparently does have at least some standards.

It says on UnfortunateImplications that the Mongelfolk are basically another race of humans, when they're apparently closer to a mythical being, such as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster (i.e. strange in appearance, rarely seen by humans, etc.). If the Mongrelfolk are rarely seen by humans, this obviously means that they can rarely speak to other people, and likely would enjoy the company, which can be seen as wanting people to be fascinated about them. My guess is that Mookie's storytelling style makes high-flying arcs very unlikely to please dislikers, and their slowness means that this has been the case for a long time. Let's review. The last half a year started with Lynn's Brook DBZ, a battle which had far too much power to make sense of who was winning, reducing it to special effects. Special effects that show effort, but if you're going to impress us with art you [[http://www.dominic-deegan.com/view.php?date=2008-11-08 could give Dex his left leg.]] It ended with the return of Supergreg - hopefully I don't have to elaborate on that. Dex's death was the best thing the comic had had in months, until the author went directly against the story for the explicit reason that he couldn't bear to kill off the character who had just received a week-long death scene. The scrying on Snuggly and the start of the Maltak trip were more down-to-earth and more coherent: snarkers said that the comic was looking up, and even dared to hope that it was improving.\\
I find Maltak almost completely incomprehensible. It's a featureless desert that the're crossing bare-headed - it's not unreasonable to expect the authour to research that before dumping the characters into a desert for most of a year. Whatever Orc arrows are, Dominic [[AnnoyingArrows takes one to the arm]] and is none the worse for wear without a medic, magic, any apparent place for a fire, or consequences lasting more than 24 hours. *** ...maybe one or two of those are valid issues (Siegfried, and ''maybe'' the choking). The rest is just incredible nitpicking (if that, where are the Infernomancers blamed for the rapings?)...which I guess was the point. They're the kinds of things the critics won't let slide. I mean, come on. The deliberately cheesy "screw in a lamppost" joke is a valid issue? Oh, and incidentally? **** Look at that link where the poison the land thing is. One of the frames is from the comic where Melna's dad is challenged to the test of taking by whathisname. The thing that people are bugged about screw in a lampost is that it just doesn't make any sense. It's like he wanted to use the lightbulb joke, tried to come up with a close medivel equivalent, and settled it there. And Rocky and Neilen were never the source of the magic inherent in themselves. The point is that the magic was well defined until Mookie changed it to suit the whims of the story.
**** Show me where Mookie established that there ''weren't'' sentient aspects of the elements, and maybe you've got a case. Having sentient elements isn't a contradiction, it's new information being revealed about the setting. It ''was'' established, when the Shintula clan first showed up, that the Orc Chandaks "ask" the elements to let them use magic, implying that, yes, there's something or someone available to "answer."
*** Also, it's kinda silly to say a plot doesn't make sense when it's still in the middle of happening. I mean, you wouldn't watch, say, half of a movie and then complain that it doesn't make sense, would you? You need to see the whole thing in order to cast any real judgment on a whole storyline, of course it isn't going to make total sense if you're still in the middle of it.
**** It's actually in the webcomic's favour that we do pass judgement on an arc mid-way, it certainly was for the Vacation- um I mean [[spoiler: "Just as Planned"]] arc. The thing is, it isn't so much the weight of Dominic Deegan's downfalls as much as it is the frequency and variety, sure most fictions make these sort of mistakes but few make this many so often across such a broad spectrum of different ways to fail, (and that is said with admiration of the writer, this isn't hatedom, a lot of us love it because it's terrible). But enough, let's not turn this into a debate hall, if you have a complaint to make, [[http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110535 I would post it here.]]
**** In defense of Luna's ability to talk while being choked--that's a triangle choke. It's a blood choke; unless you squeeze ''very'' hard it's not going to cut off your air. So she could talk fine--it's the time limit before she passes out that's the problem. Whether she passed that is fuzzy.
** Because not only is he writing Strawmen and Mary Sues, he's also making a living off it. We, by snarking, hope to rekindle motivation in those who would make great things, but settle for less, due to Deegan.
*** That sounds foolish. "He makes a bad comic, and it ruins other comics". No, Dominic Deegan doesn't bring down other webartist. It doesn't discourage them, nor does it prevent "good" comics from flourishing. If they were that good, they'd be more popular. If you're gonna hate, then hate, but don't hand out some BS reason. Gregory isn't some guy who's never been in a fight and doesn't have any sort of special powers...even before Super Greg, you ''already knew'' that Greg for all intents and purposes had superpowers via his White Magic, and was experienced in using them. And DominicDeegan has, from the start, basically been an analog to the modern world, only with magic taking the place of technology in a lot of places. I think we're just going to have to disagree on this one. The only way I can see it as a WallBanger, honestly, is if you're already going into it to pick it apart. I read it as it happened, and have gone back and read it, and I don't nearly see how it's as bad as everyone says, certainly not for it to be constantly referenced as "Super Greg, just...Super Greg," as if it was self-evident and clear to all creation that this is the worst thing anyone's ever done, ever, all the time.

The people who brought him to live there and vouched for him are the town's local heroes after all. Plus, we only ever see him interacting with the members of the cast who have already accepted him and we never see him talking to other people by himself.

He's creative enough to make a living. Those Strawmen Mary Sues must be good enough for the fandom. It wouldn't be nearly as bad if the Hatedom didn't leak all over the main page.

**** This is really such a huge problem to you? I wonder if you sit and rage at, say, RPGs because every single NPC doesn't do the "WHOAMG A TALKING LION/FROG-PERSON/SUPERMUTANT/NAKED LADY!", or if this is exclusive whining about DD for the sake of whining about DD.
**** In some RPGs NPCs do occasionally remark on your weirder party members. They usually don't though because of GameplayAndStorySegregation. DD is not a game. It does not to get to use that as an excuse. That said, it does make sense that Quilt is more or less accepted in Barthis. The people who brought him to live there and vouched for him are the town's local heroes after all. Plus, we only ever see him interacting with the members of the cast who have already accepted him and we never see him talking to other people by himself. It's entirely possible that some people in Barthis are still uncomfortable with Quilt and only tolerate him because the Deegans vouched for him. He'd probably invite more than a few uncomfortable stares if he ever left his comfort zone in Barthis, which is probably why he rarely ever seems to leave it.

** Judging by what Barnett said, Travoria women learning magic is just expected, so she'd have learned some as a matter of course. The elder Travoria might also have wanted Luna to have some use in case she for some reason didn't kill herself.

The elder Travoria might also have wanted Luna to have some use in case she for some reason didn't kill herself. Additionally, given that Luna's well versed in magical theory as well as application, it's likely that however much or little her mother initially taught her, she would've taken it upon herself to study on her own.

*** It might have been her mother's decision initially. Or her father's; we don't know anything about him except that Luna's mother married him for his money before having him killed, so for all we know he was of the mind that his daughter was beautiful the way she was and didn't need to go to an alterist.

Added DiffLines:

*** Presumably she considered the compensation she would've gotten from having her suicide while a member of the Royal Knights was around as more than enough compensation for funeral costs; though given how little she regarded Luna, her "funeral plans" for her likely weren't much more extravagant than "toss her in a hole and be on my merry way." Gotta remember, the elder Travoria isn't exactly firing on all cylinders here. And, again, there's the question of Luna's father; he could very well have been a mitigating factor preventing the elder Travoria from badgering Luna before she had him killed.

****On a baby? On a toddler? On a 4 or 5 year old? Hell, even a politically convenient loveless arranged marriage is of more value to Hagface than funeral costs after almost 20 years of maintenance, upkeep, and the bother of abusing her nigh-constantly.

* Oh hey, Stunt and Bortella. Way to kill off all those strawmen. That might, in a way, be justified, if Stunt hadn't already killed someone in that arc, and if the strawmen did anything but stab that one chick. Stunt also has the honor of crossing the MoralEventHorizon at the end. Yay Wild Edge!

**Because not only is he writing Strawmen and Mary Sues, he's also making a living off it. To those who aspire to make a webcomic, this pretty much says "Hey, you don't need to be ''creative'' to make a webcomic. You just need puns and alliteration!" We, by snarking, hope to rekindle motivation in those who would make great things, but settle for less, due to Deegan.
