** In most manga aimed for young people the kanji has katakana spelled out next to them so you don't have to know kanji to read. And besides, it's not only kanji in manga so even if the kanji didn't have any explaining katakana next to it they could read the rest and not only "look at the pictures".

* Ryusuke and Maho can't read or write kanji because they spent so much time in the USA during their childhood... how is it, then, that they can both be so into {{shoujo}} manga, if they can't actually read it? Just looking at the art only goes so far, and they have a pretty impressive manga collection between them.
