In book 8, we see that the distrust between fairies, dwarves, and goblins has almost led them to full-on '''war'''. They can barely agree to give Kara time for her quest, and even that is given begrudgingly. They're so focused on protecting their own races that they don't see the bigger threat endangering all life.
