* While defending Zack Powers, Carmen at one point blames Zack's problems on Mel's shabby parenting. While none of this excuses his behavior, she might have a couple of points:
** On top of being kind of corrupt, Mel has no problem with wanting to flirt and sleep around with Veronica, a young intern. This alone is an incredible ''ethical'' violation, even if Veronica did consent to the sex. What's worse is that he apparently has "magic pills" to get himself in the mood. They could just be Viagra or some aphrodisiac, but what if turned out to be some kind of '''roofie'''? This could explain why Zack has no problem with getting Carmen drunk: [[LoserSonOfALoserDad because he's seen his father do that all the time.
** Carmen describes Zack's mom as a "bitter old drunk." It is implied that Mel is a lousy partner, and so Zack's mom took her anger at Mel out on Zack. Zack, after being mistreated by his mom, became a misogynist with no respect for women (except when he wants sex).
*** Zack is a rotten person who does deserve to get hit with a wrench by Benny, but his childhood would mess anybody up.

** Vic was the polar opposite of Benny: he spoiled his children to overcompensate for his poverty-stricken childhood in Cuba and often behaved in an arrogant manner toward others, especially George. Angie herself can be incredibly permissive to her two children, and other obnoxious people like Benny and Marisol, and can even go behind George's back many times, and once wasted money on a stupid massage.
** However, while both Angie and George share the flaws of their parents, they aren't ''defined'' by them. George can learn to be more sensitive and understanding, and Angie can put her foot down when her children act out of line, and seems much more humble and kind compared to her own overpriveleged family.

Like Vic, Angie can be dismissive of George's (sometimes valid) concerns and can even go has gone behind George's back many times, and times. It is implied her mom is a spendthrift, considering in her sole appearance, she tried to buy Carmen a fur coat. Angie herself once wasted George's money on a stupid massage.

* George and Angie both take after Benny and Vic in subtle ways, especially in parenting:
** Benny was a drunken hardass who never showed much love or kindness to George, and rarely made him feel special. George himself can be incredibly insensitive and derisive to his own family, has intimacy issues with Angie, and once spent a whole episode mocking Carmen and her interest in poetry.

Claudia would not want those relatives taking care of Veronica and would also like to get back at them by picking the guy they hate the most to be their trustee.

* Claudia, Veronica's mother, making George the trustee, makes a lot of sense when you see that her own extended family and acquaintances don't seem to be good role models.
** Vic admits to having spoiled Ray, turning him into a rotten con artist who stole Veronica's quinceanera money. Considering how this hurt her and her daughter, Claudia's contempt for Vic is pretty understandable.
** Gloria herself has a really poor love life, even being desperate enough to kiss her own brother-in-law. While Claudia might pity Gloria, she doesn't think the woman is stable enough to be a trustee.
** A lot of Claudia's other relatives seem to be awful snobs: one of them openly wishes Angie divorced George, and one of them condescendingly assumed George was too poor to fly. One of them sued Veronica for her trustee money.
** George, for all his flaws, is a hard-working, street smart, self-made man, who tries to help his kids. Claudia would definitely see George as a more reliable role model for Veronica compared to her own family.

* George's half-brother turning out spoiled and irresponsible makes sense. Manny admits he felt guilt for ditching George and leaving him with Benny, so him spoiling George II rotten was probably him overcompensating for not having been there for George.

* In the episode "George Helps Ernie See The Cellulight"" Ernie becomes too fat to do his job, and George realizes his overeating is due to anxiety about dating after he got his own place. There are a couple events that could've triggered it. In the episode where he moves out, he's waving to a girl outside and George calls him a creepy guy upstairs. In the Christmas episode that same season, George and Angie become marriage counselors at church and Ernie asks for help with dating. George says it'd take a miracle to help him. Ernie's sensitive as it is, so George's comments were more than likely nails in the coffin.
