** Tywin Lannister. Both of them are powerful, competent, and highly respected lords with a lot of sway in Kings Landing, but their methodologies are almost complete opposites. Eddard rules with respect and justice, Tywin rules through fear. Eddard leads by example, Tywin delegates. Both men value their families, but where Eddard loves all of his children unconditionally, Tywin approaches paternal duties as a cold necessity. They also both place a high value on honor, but whereas for Eddard that means always doing the right thing, Tywin is more concerned with his reputation.

Eddard rules with respect and justice, Tywin rules through fear. Eddard leads by example, Tywin delegates. Both men value their families, but where Eddard loves all of his children unconditionally, Tywin approaches paternal duties as a cold necessity. Both have sons considered to be marked by innate immorality due to the manner of their birth, but, while Tywin openly hates his dwarf son, Eddard loves his bastard as much as all his other children. They also both place a high value on honor, but whereas for Eddard that means always doing the right thing, Tywin is more concerned with his reputation. The effects of their different approaches become very apparent after their deaths -- Eddard's children and vassals remain fimrly loyal to him and his legacy, mounting multiple campaigns or plots to avenge him or place his heirs back in his seat, while Tywin's children all hate him and refuse to carry on his legacy or play the roles he meant for them, and his vassals simply abandon the Lannister cause in King's Landing once he's no longer alive to enforce his threats.

** Walder Frey. Both are feudal lords of a BigScrewedUpFamily who in their prime used to resent their liege lords and plot against them(Aerys Targaryen and Hoster Tully respectively). In Robert's rebellion, they both act like opportunists who only send in their armies once there is a clear winner. However, while Tywin has the competence and power to both compensate for and mask those flaws in order not to let them ruin his reputation as a fearsome ruler, Walder Frey does not, and as a result is seen as a joke whose only NotSoHarmlessVillain moment is short-lived.

** Arya Stark. Despite being the only one of Cat's children not to take after her physically, and her TomboyPrincess attitude not much resembling Cat's ProperLady one, it's clear that Arya inherited a lot of personality traits from her mother: her HotBlooded nature, her tendency to be more practical and cynical than the rest of their family, and less inclined to follow HonorBeforeReason, her strong sense of justice that often translates into a desire for vengeance, and her ability to hold a grudge. However, Cat was the eldest child and PromotedToParent very young, meaning she grew up [[TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask wearing the queenly mask]], and so the traits she shares with her daughter only really become apparent as she becomes increasingly traumatised. Arya, being a middle child with two parents, and then later [[spoiler:being separated from her family]], is able to be [[RebelliousPrincess rebellious]] a lot longer. [[spoiler:After they both believe most of their family is dead, they both end up on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge]]. Arya is also one of the least class-conscious people in Westeros, easily making friends such as Mycah (the butcher's boy), Hot Pie, and Gendry, whereas Catelyn is, despite her generally compassionate nature, more classist -- being put a bit out of sorts by illegitimate children (as they remind her of her husband's own [[HeroicBastard illegitimate son]] Jon Snow by an [[MissingMom unknown woman]], a woman who Catelyn feared Ned loved more than her due to Ned's fierce protectiveness over Jon) and her reference to the smallfolk [[spoiler:Edmure lets take shelter in Riverrun]] as 'useless mouths' (understandable, given [[spoiler:the castle was about to be besieged]], but still).

** Cersei Lannister. Brinne provides a counterpoint as the other important woman in Jaime's life. Brienne is precisely everything Cersei is not; ugly where Cersei is beautiful, honorable where Cersei is treacherous, a warrior where Cersei is a plotter. Brienne is physically grotesque but noble in spirit, while Cersei is beautiful but monstrous. The more Jaime distances himself in spirit from Cersei, the closer he becomes in spirit to Brienne.

** Arya Stark. Both of them are wandering women, taking on various companions as they search for something missing in their lives. Both are breaking social conventions by their desires to fight, and both are tired and weary after spending many months traveling across the continent(s). However, Brienne is more like a HedgeKnight with her feeling honor bound to find Sansa Stark and make all the other starks safe for Jamie Lannister's sake. Arya is a child who just wants to take things back to how they were, but when she hits her DespairEventHorizon, flees Westeros in order to have new training so she can get her revenge on all who hurt her family. When they crossed paths briefly, Arya ends up...unimpressed by Brienne's mission, and end up parting on bad terms.

Foil is only when the character are seen together and interacting with each other, more than half of those examples never met.

** Stannis Baratheon. Both are second sons with a strong sense of duty, both helped Robert Baratheon greatly during his rebellion, and both rule grim and harsh areas of Westeros. Both try to clean up the corruption in the realm. However, Stannis knows that being brutal is necessary, which enables him to survive longer. Ned is liked by Robert as a brother, while Robert doesn't get on with his actual brothers and is on especially bad terms with Stannis. Ned's accomplishments in the Rebellion are admired, Stannis does not receive appreciation for his less glamorous role. Robert names Ned as Hand instead of Stannis, a title Ned didn't want, while Stannis resented not being considered for the position after all the help he had given Robert. Both are considered traitors by the majority of the realm but are, in reality, among the most moral and principled characters in a CrapsackWorld.
** Kevan Lannister. Both are highly capable and basically decent -- or at least, principled -- men who are loyal to less scrupulous, more murderous lords they regard as family (Robert and Tywin, respectively, though Tywin actually ''is'' Kevan's family), generally ignoring the faults that ultimately get those men killed (ie. their whoring and their treatment of the ''rest'' of their family) because they think said men deserve to be in charge -- Ned gets a twofer since he thinks his older brother Brandon would have been a better head of House Stark, just as Kevan thought that Tywin was most suited to heading House Lannister. They both show themselves to be good family men who genuinely love their family. [[spoiler:Both men die pretty much because they followed their principles and both men's' deaths serve mainly to make Westeros more unstable; its less direct with Ned, but both are also killed by children.]]

** Davos Seaworth. See below.
** Roose Bolton. Ned loves his bastard son Jon Snow, openly acknowledges him as his child, and raises Jon in his home castle as part of the family alongside his trueborn children, giving Jon a highborn upbringing. Roose, on the other hand, treats his bastard son Ramsay very poorly, leaves Ramsay to his peasant mother, and only gives her money to keep Ramsay ''away'' from his home castle, refusing to acknowledge him until he has no other choice. Both Ned and Roose strongly follow the old ways of the First Men. For Ned, that means prioritizing the well-being of his subjects; for Roose, that means [[DroitDuSeigneur raping lowborn women]] on the basis of archaic, outlawed traditions. They also both married a woman from the Riverlands as part of a wartime alliance and ended up happy in those marriages.

** Stannis Baratheon. They both believe in doing their duty, even if they hate it and how much doing it costs them. They also end up taking dark paths because of it. Stannis starts to dabble in BloodMagic and HumanSacrifice while Catelyn [[spoiler: becomes utterly fixated on revenge when she [[CameBackWrong returns from death]] as Lady Stoneheart, and commits indiscriminate murders along the way.]]
** Tywin Lannister. Both Catelyn and Tywin practically raised their siblings by themselves and in both cases, their siblings were not up to par; when it comes to their children, both their legacies went down after a series of their own mistakes. Also, they are abusive towards a family member that they consider unworthy (Jon Snow and Tyrion), they have a son who is crippled/stunted (Bran and Tyrion again), have adventurous sons who are heirs to the family name (Jaime and Robb), a rebellious daughter (Arya and Cersei) and a princess-like daughter (Sansa and Cersei again).
** Theon Greyjoy. Both are foreigners at Winterfell, having come to the North from very different cultures which follow different gods (the Seven and the Drowned God, respectively), and both still feel like outsiders because of this. However, Catelyn -- as Lady Stark and the wife of the warden of the North -- is clearly an integral part of the family, whereas Theon -- as the Starks' hostage -- clearly isn't. Both have somewhat [[GoingNative Gone Native]] as well. Their respective homelands, the Riverlands and the Iron Islands, are both associated with water, and have a long but troubled history together: the Riverlands had been ruled by the Ironborn prior to Aegon's Conquest, but very unhappily, and both Catelyn and Theon's families only became rulers of their respective regions of Westeros thanks to Aegon's destruction of House Hoare. Both have a very bitter attitude towards Jon Snow fueled partly by jealousy: Theon's jealousy of Jon's acceptance by his father and siblings and as one of the Stark children, despite his illegitimate status, while Catelyn fears Ned might have loved Jon's [[MissingMom mother]] more than her. Theon is a StepfordSmiler whereas Catelyn is TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask, but both attitudes are a way of hiding all their doubts and insecurities behind a facade, until it [[SanitySlippage starts to eat away at their sanity]] and severely hampers their decision making. Catelyn is utterly devoted to others, namely her family, whereas Theon is very selfish. However, [[spoiler:[[HourGlassPlot after her family's deaths, Catelyn devotes her]] [[CameBackWrong 'life']] [[HourGlassPlot to pursuing her own need for vengeance, whereas Theon has been broken and brainwashed into considering himself worthless and only]] [[FateWorseThanDeath 'lives']] [[HourGlassPlot for his captor, Ramsay]]]]. Both are physically beautiful, [[spoiler:but undergo a death either [[LossOfIdentity symbolic]] or [[BackFromTheDead literal]] that leaves them horrifically mutilated, white-haired, sallow-skinned and CoveredInScars]]. Both adopt new names after this. As [[spoiler:Lady Stoneheart,]] Cat becomes the embodiment of RevengeBeforeReason, pursuing a twisted form of justice against the people she considers responsible for her family's demise in such a way it's impossible for most readers to consider her actions at all just, whereas [[spoiler:as Reek]] Theon receives a dose of LaserGuidedKarma so cruel and disproportionate it's impossible for most readers to consider it justice for his crimes.

** Rhaegar Targaryen. Both are [[WarriorPrince Warrior Princes]] widely thought of as TheAce and BigGood, with a HundredPercentAdorationRating, and are in-universe [[MemeticBadass Memetic Badasses]]. Both made bad decisions in regards to a woman (Rhaegar eloping with/kidnapping Lyanna Stark, Robb [[spoiler:marrying Jeyne Westerling]]) that required breaking marriage-related vows (Rhaegar's vows to Elia Martell, Robb's [[spoiler:marriage alliance with the Freys]]) and ultimately [[spoiler:got them killed]]. They were both possibly motivated by family history regarding childbearing (Rhaegar's wish to fulfill the Prince That Was Promised prophecy, Robb fear of siring a bastard like his father). After their deaths, former supporters remain deeply devoted to their memories, and [[spoiler:plot to put their heirs (Aegon VI and Rickon Stark) on the throne]]. Both are entirely shown to us from others' perspectives -- Robb is one of two Starks (the other being Rickon) who is not a viewpoint character and Rhaegar is one of the most notable [[PosthumousCharacter Posthumous Characters]], leaving both subject to a lot of AlternateCharacterInterpretation. Both Robb and Rhaegar are also brothers to two characters who are often speculated to be TheChosenOne (Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen respectively, see below.)

** Daenerys Targaryen. Sansa is what would have happened to Daenerys if Daenerys didn't have the mechanisms to fight back and if she weren't surrounded by prophecy. It's fair to point out that Dany greatly relied in the charity of others to survive up to the events of ''A Game of Thrones'' and these same people might be pushing these gifts for her to fulfill said prophecy. While Sansa is largely a political pawn, Dany has several people on her back trying to make her an ideological pawn. Both see themselves as dissatisfied with their aspirations once they fulfill them: Sansa has dreamt of a courtly, glamorous life; Dany was told all her life she is a natural-born leader who is meant to rule -- but once they come to realize these aspirations, they both find out that the reality of their aspirations is far more crushing, dangerous and difficult than either of them could know. Both are very attractive but have found little advantage to it. Both have been separated from their families. Sansa has four brothers (Robb, Jon, Rickon and Bran) who love her while Daenerys' own brother (Viserys) uses her as a pawn and treats her poorly. [[spoiler: In more recent events, both Sansa and Daenerys are trying to shed their personae and become more pragmatic... only that Dany has dragons and hasn't used them fully.]]
** Brienne of Tarth. See below.

** Daenerys Targaryen. Both are highborn girls who have fallen on hard times, lost many family members, and have spent much time living in squalor in a foreign land. While Arya has four brothers -- Robb, Jon, Rickon and Bran -- who love her, Daenerys' only brother that she has ever known -- Viserys -- treats her horribly. Their quests each involve the supernatural and the pursuit of justice. Unlike Daenerys though, Arya doesn't blindly judge people; she understands that just because a person is part of a group, it doesn't automatically make them like the rest. Daenerys orders the crucifixion of 163 slavers, not wanting to think that there might be good people among them, because being a slaver makes someone evil by default. Arya chooses not to include the Freys on her list because she doesn't know the names of the ones involved in the deaths of [[spoiler:her brother Robb and her mother Cateylyn]].
** Varys. From their great information-gathering abilities to [[spoiler: mummering]], Arya is becoming more like him by every page, yet the two have never had an interaction together. In a way, this mirrors Sansa and Littlefinger's lessons, except Littlefinger is feeding Sansa with his teachings while Arya's teacher has been life.
** [[spoiler: Aegon VI Targaryen]]. Varys gives a monologue about the ideal leader Westeros needs and it fits Arya perfectly. Trained in arms, reads and writes, speaks several tongues [[note]](Common Tongue, High Valyrian, Braavosi, Lysen and Pentoshi)[[/note]] has studied history [[note]](she adores female figures like Visenya and Nymeria)[[/note]] and law [[note]]([[spoiler: the reason she killed Daeron]])[[/note]] and poetry [[note]](prefers songs of Wenda the White Fawn)[[/note]]. She has lived with fishermen, worked with her hands, swam in rivers (like a fish according to Jon), mended nets, and learned to wash her own clothes at need. She can fish, cook and bind up a wound. She knows what it is like to be hungry, to be hunted, to be afraid. She understands kingship is a duty, that a king must put his people first, and live and rule for them [[note]](she defended the butcher's boy Mycah from Prince Joffrey, and understands that the smallfolk deserve freely-given justice.)[[/note]] Varys, however, wasn't talking about Arya, but about [[spoiler: Aegon VI]].
** Myrcella Baratheon. Myrcella is every bit the child princess Arya refuses to be, but with none of the abuse that Sansa saw. Myrcella, for the most part, was able to see herself safe precisely by abiding to her betrothed. Arya, herself, was betrothed to a Frey boy that she actually met, but neither of them knew each other when it happened. When it came to the time, however, [[spoiler:Myrcella was unable to avoid becoming a political pawn and was maimed for it]], while Arya was able to escape being a political pawn, but through a great deal of suffering.
** Lyanna Stark. Arya is frequently compared to her aunt by many characters, especially by her father, from looks to personality. Like Lyanna, Arya is tomboy-ish, one-of-the-boys, HotBlooded, good horsewoman and swordsman in contrast to Westerosi expectations of gender, and has a tendency to defend the weak. Both were separated from their families during a war. However, Lyanna was reunited with one of her brothers while Arya has yet to be reunited with any family members, longing to see them again. Where Lyanna was taken by the crown prince, with multiple noble houses drawn into a war that was motivated to take her back, Arya hides among the smallfolk, is removed from the politics of the Seven Kingdoms, and is either forgotten about/overlooked by warring factions, or members of her family try to save her but they are unable to get to her. Lyanna had an ArrangedMarriage with Robert Baratheon but didn't love him and was aware he only saw her beauty and not her iron underneath. In contrast, Arya befriends Gendry (King Robert Baratheon's [[HeroicBastard bastard]] son) without either of them knowing his true identity or having a match forced upon them, they figh and suffer together as commoners, and Gendry respects her spirited nature and ability to survive under harsh circumstances.
** Brienne of Tarth. See below.

** Lysa Arryn. Both the younger of two daughters, who grew up in the shadow of more traditionally ladylike older sisters - Sansa being more feminine, Catelyn being more responsible and mature. Arya openly dreads having to fulfill the proscribed role for Westerosi women of marrying and having children, whereas Lysa [[spoiler:resented her arranged marriage enough to eventually murder her husband]]. Both their fathers love them deeply, but are somewhat put off by their rebelling against their set out life plan, but where Ned accepts this part of Arya and allows her to train in swordfighting, Hoster [[spoiler:forces Lysa to abort her child so he can marry her to Jon Arryn, for which she never forgives him]]. Both develop significant mental health problems. When separated, Arya grows more forgiving of her sister Sansa having been something of a BigSisterBully in their childhood, whereas while Lysa is separated from Catelyn, her resentments thicken into a deep-seated hatred of her for something - Petyr loving her and not Lysa - that really isn't Catelyn's fault. Also, while Arya spends most of her arc on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge against the people who destroyed her family, Lysa [[spoiler:inadvertently destroyed her own family via her murder of Jon Arryn]].

** Robert Arryn. Sweetrobin is what could have happened to Bran if Bran had yielded to Theon or stayed at Winterfell. They are both young kids when they are thrown into ruling their respective keeps; Bran has a bit of a grasp on leadership while Sweetrobin ''really'' does not. Bran is physically impaired due to his fall, while Sweetrobin is impaired by his feebleness and coddling from his mother. Bran is significantly more mature and resourceful than Sweetrobin and is able to avoid becoming a political token at the price of losing Winterfell; Sweetrobin is holding on for dear life to the seat of the Eyrie with multiple people expecting him to die.
** Tommen Baratheon. Both are children thrown into a position of authority. Much like in the case of Sweetrobin, Bran avoids becoming a political token like Tommen is.

** Gendry. See below.
** Daenerys Targaryen. See below.

** Arys Oakheart. Both are decent, good-hearted [[SkilledButNaive martial-savvy but somewhat naive boys]] who join orders which have them become the CelibateHero. Both came to a foreign land and were seduced by respective women in those lands, who they fell in love with. Both are influenced by their environment and love. But they take different actions as a result -- Jon remains heroic, undergoes CharacterDevelopment and matures while, in contrast, Arys becomes rather perverted [[spoiler:and does not mature, dying before any additional CharacterDevelopment can occur]]. [[spoiler: Arys changes his allegiance to Arianne and "betrays" both the Kingsguard and Myrcella, Jon chooses Night's Watch over Ygritte. Both pay because they dabble in politics -- Arys dies after SuicideByCop when Arianne's scheme, which he joins, fail; Jon is betrayed in a mutiny by some members of the Night's Watch because he gave some advice to Stannis, let the Free Folk south of the Wall in his efforts to save everyone from the oncoming threat of [[GreaterScopeVillain the Others]], and intended to go south and deal with [[BastardBastard Ramsay Bolton]] when Ramsay threatened to attack Castle Black first.]]

However, they share a number of character traits, including a {{Determinator}} nature, a strong sense of justice bordering on BlackAndWhiteMorality, particularly when it comes to those who they view as usurping their throne, and a habit of having people burned alive, would probably be better ruler material than either by dragons or by Melisandre. They both have a DarkAndTroubledPast that is implied to be rife with abuse, which put her on a dead end of influenced their passions for religion. They each find comfort in their respective elements and are all about fulfilling the chain will of inheritance. But while Cersei just ''feels'' she their god through, no matter what their interpretation of that goal truly is. This includes attaching themselves to people of power and influence, and shoving their dogma down the throat of anyone who spends more than five minutes with them. The difference is that there is a lot more evidence that Melisandre's god is real, whereas Aeron only has blind faith to go on. Perhaps because of this, Melisandre is more competent than any of calm and confident in her brothers, Myrcella really beliefs and the way she presents herself, which greatly contrasts with [[SinisterMinister Aeron]] [[LargeHam Damphair.]] Another contrast is smarter than that Aeron is always a freakishly disheveled mess covered in salt water, sea weed and rags, and Melisandre is always hauntingly beautiful, composed and wearing bright red silks.

Thoros' spiritual awakening sets him on a path to defend the smallfolk of the Seven Kingdoms from the warring factions that plague the land, whereas Aeron's made him one of the Ironborn's biggest supporters of the return of The Old Way (which is assuredly not for the good of anyone but the strongest, most brutal people in Westeros). While Aeron's revival left him a stern and gloomy individual who carries out every action in service to The Drowned God, Thoros retains his good nature for the most part, even as The Brotherhood Without Banners suffers HeWhoFightsMonsters.
** Theon Greyjoy. They are the youngest sons of their respective Greyjoy lord fathers. And, after suffering deeply traumatic events during war, they each become completely different from the men they were before the war started. ** House Florent. They are the royal in-laws to two of the kings of the War of the Five Kings. They are both from the Reach, boast descent from Garth Greenhand and are disputing domain over the region for most of the contemporary era. Whereas the Tyrells are physically attractive and pleasant, the Florents are ugly with a sense of entitlement and no social skills; the Tyrells left the Reach to sunny King's Landing while the Florents left the Reach to the snowy North.
** House Frey. Where the Freys have tried their social climbing the direct and dirty way when not marrying into every power in sight, the Tyrells have gone about it rather differently (if, also including marriage). Both have large families (granted, the Tyrells don't outnumber the Freys: but, they're still not a tiny family), both have ThickerThanWater tendencies. But, only one is succeeding at this whole PR thing and has plans in place for when various linchpins may no longer be in the world.
** House Stark. See above.
They seem to have a flexible code of honor and a love of family that's seeing them stick together and manage to stay together while forging ahead in the Decadent Court atmosphere. "Strong" is in their motto. "Stark" also means strong. The Starks remain strong through endurance and willpower, the Tyrells through clever alliances. Both are loved by their smallfolk but while the former is honorable to a fault, the latter is have no true loyalties but to themselves. Both have ancestors who surrendered without a fight to Aegon the Conqueror.
** House Martell. See below.Tully. They have the focus on family, they worked to achieve more political power (like joining Aegon I to depose the Harren or Hoster's arranged marriages to House Stark and Arryn) and neither house ever held a kingship.
** House Lannister. Both are ancient and powerful houses that have been working to exert their influence over the Iron Throne to their own benefit, but whereas the Lannisters are essentially a BigScrewedUpFamily who cooperate through TeethClenchedTeamwork at best, the Tyrells work together out of genuine love and affection for one another, treating one another as actual family rather than rivals for power.

** Robert Baratheon. Both are extremely bloodthirsty, both like fucking everything that moves, both are charismatic legends who overshadow a younger, more principled sibling, both like drinking and they both father several bastards they don't care about. Robert said that he always wanted to let the throne go and go across the world as a "sellsword king", fighting, drinking and fornicating. Sounds a lot like what Euron's been doing for several years. All that said though, while Robert had his dark side he never had anywhere near the level of sociopathic cruelty Euron possesses. They are both TheCharmer, good at rallying men to their cause, but with Euron it seems to be a more sociopathic way of manipulation.
** Stannis Baratheon. They both intend to rule the Seven Kingdoms despite ruling only a group of Islands. Stannis is disliked for being a Principles Zealot, Euron for being psychotic and cruel even by Ironborn standards. They are both brilliant tacticians and strategists who are also using magic to achieve their ends. Stannis is bad with people due to No Social Skills, but wins support through his lawfulness. Euron can be charming when he wants too, and is a skilled manipulator, winning support through his riches and rousing speeches. After their older brother's death they claim rule ahead of their brother's children. The difference is Stannis knows Robert has no legitimate children, which by the law of the Seven Kingdoms makes him the heir. Euron simply claims the Seastone Chair by strength and partially because many of the Ironborn wouldn't support a woman and Theon is presumed dead. Also, Stannis kills his brother so he can become King. However, he kills a younger brother who was trying to usurp the Iron Throne and kill him, it is unclear how knowledgeable Stannis was of Renly's death, and Stannis is clearly upset over Renly's death. Euron probably murdered his older brother so he could take over the Iron Islands and shows no remorse at this.
** Renly Baratheon. They are the more famous, colorful and magnetic brothers who rally great armies to their cause and usurp crowns from cold, hard, unglamorous military men. They contrast in that Renly is a younger brother whose quest to ignore the laws of succession and become king over Stannis is fully supported by the a large number of Lords, and Euron is the older brother as well as the unpopular vote and has to convince The Iron Islands to make him king over his more traditional brother, Victarion. Where Renly hoped to prevail over his brother and become king through battle, Euron needed only words to sway the Ironborn to his side. And while Renly is a flashy man who has pretensions of being a Warrior Prince despite never seeing any actual fighting, Euron is a flashy man who really is a WarriorPrince as well as an OmnicidalManiac known for his battle prowess, his devious mind, and the brutal tactics he employs. ** Robert Baratheon. House Targaryen. All that said though, while Robert had his dark side he never had anywhere near the level have forms of sociopathic cruelty Euron possesses. They are both TheCharmer, good at rallying men to their cause, but CultureClash with Euron it seems to be a more sociopathic way of manipulation.
The difference is Stannis knows Robert has no legitimate children, which by the law
much of the Seven Kingdoms makes him rest of Westeros, if in somewhat differing ways, thanks to the heir. Euron simply claims the Seastone Chair by strength and partially because many historical Valyrian persecution of the Ironborn wouldn't support a woman and Theon is presumed dead. Also, Stannis kills his brother so he can become King. Rhoynar in Essos that drove them to Westeros in the first place. Westeros has changed both (arguably the Targaryens more than the Martells), while they've also kept their distinct flavours. However, he kills they still share more in common with each other than they do with much of the continent.
** House Stark. The Martells rule
a younger brother who was trying hedonistic kingdom in the desert. Starks rule what is seen as a domain of frozen waste and grim men. Doran, Oberyn and Elia's relationship mirror that of Eddard, Brandon and Lyanna. Even more so then that; whereas the Starks' lineage is infamous due to usurp Torrhen Stark, the King Who Knelt, the Martells are proud to be the only unconquered kingdom of Westeros. And while the Starks are the in-universe poster family for HonorBeforeReason, the Martells are marked by their pragmatic and sneaky approach to life. And yet in spite of these differences, both families have a major hate-on for the Lannisters, even though they were on opposite sides of Robert's Rebellion. Both Houses were disconnected from ruling court and unlike virtually every other house, had no interest in the Iron Throne itself but got involved in the war to avenge loved ones at the hands of the Lannisters (Ned and kill him, it is unclear how knowledgeable Stannis was of Renly's death, and Stannis is clearly upset over Renly's death. Euron probably murdered his older brother so he could take over the Iron Islands and shows no remorse at this.
** Renly Baratheon. They are the more famous, colorful and magnetic brothers who rally great armies
Elia). Both Houses continue to their cause and usurp crowns from cold, hard, unglamorous military men. They contrast in that Renly is a younger brother whose quest to ignore the laws of succession and become king over Stannis is fully supported be impacted by the a large number events of Lords, Robert's Rebellion [[note]] the Starks went to Kings Landing due to Robert and Euron is the older brother as well as the unpopular vote and has to convince The Iron Islands to make him king over his more traditional brother, Victarion. While Renly is quite willing to kill his older brother in battle because of them opposing his weaker claim, Euron probably murdered his older brother with an assassin, making it look like an accident.

[[folder:Victarion Greyjoy]]
* Victarion Greyjoy
** Stannis Baratheon. Both place honour and their versions of justice very high on the list of priorities. They are both very hard men, but also brittle in some surprisingly similar ways, as well — and, they don't react well to being baulked, eventually bending their principles enough to seek "alternative" means to get what they see as their due. Neither gets on particularly well with their siblings, but Victarion wins the "worst brother", Freudian Excuse prize with Euron. He shares Stannis' Middle Child Syndrome when it comes to attitude and expectations. They both follow their older brother dutiful in rebelling against the Iron Throne, then on said brother's death expect to succeed. The main difference between the pair is in the settings they find themselves in — and, the fact that Victarion doesn't have a trusty Davos to keep him vaguely on an even keel (or, he might have had, had he taken Asha up on her offer). Also, both lose their chances to be King to be more charismatic brothers (Euron is older then Victarion, but Victarion felt he had more right to be King as Euron was a cruel and godless man). Also, both Stannis and Victarion have creepy, manipulative priests of R'hllor as advisors. However, while Stannis isn't particularly religious and his R'hllorism seems largely pragmatic, Victarion is very devoted to Ironborn religion.
** Jaime Lannister. They are both among the greatest warriors of the current generation, and command fearsome reputations as well as Names to Run Away from Really Fast. Both are deeply conflicted over their lovers' alleged infidelity, stress over their place in Medieval society and how people perceive them, and undergo major personality changes after suffering a traumatic wound to their hands. Jaime will forever be seen as dishonorable for slaying the Mad King, who was going to burn King's Landing to the ground, whereas Victarion beat his own wife to death to secure his honor after his brother had his way with her and he is respected by his culture for doing so. Jaime is cunning, witty and charming, while Victarion is conventional, dull and not too bright. Also, Jaime loses his hand and later resolves to be a better person, but when Victarion's maimed hand is healed and changed by Moqorro, he becomes less honorable and duty-bound and more brutal and self-serving.
** Quentyn Martell. They are both naive, socially awkward, highborn princes suffering from MiddleChildSyndrome and have strong desires to prove themselves as men in the eyes of their peers. However, Victarion is an older, seasoned, RatedMForManly WarriorPrince, whereas Quentyn is a younger lad, sheltered and scholarly, who is totally out of his element as a fighter and adventurer. Victarion embodies everything an Ironborn should be, while Quentyn is not at all the exotic viper one would expect a Martell of Dorne to be. ** Melisandre of Asshai. They are both TheFundamentalist who support grim warriors of "royal blood" and are totally cool with HumanSacrifice to their respective gods. They both have a DarkAndTroubledPast that is implied to be rife with abuse, which influenced their passions for religion. They each find comfort in their respective elements and are all about fulfilling the will of their god through, no matter what their interpretation of that goal truly is. This includes attaching themselves to people of power and influence, and shoving their dogma down the throat of anyone who spends more than five minutes with them. The difference is that there is a lot more evidence that Melisandre's god is real, whereas Aeron only has blind faith to go on. Even more so then that; whereas the Starks' lineage is infamous due to Torrhen Stark, the King Who Knelt, the Martells are proud to be the only unconquered kingdom city in the North). Wyman could be seen as representing the "new," at least relative to Roose Bolton, who not only is a First Man who worships the old gods, but who practices some archaic customs such as the right of Westeros. And while first night and flaying that have fallen out of favor elsewhere, though Roose cares little for the ancient tradition of guest right. The Boltons are an old Northern House who have often rebelled against the Starks are the in-universe poster family for HonorBeforeReason, the Martells are marked by their pragmatic and sneaky approach to life. And yet in spite of these differences, both families have a major hate-on for the Lannisters, even though they were on opposite sides of Robert's Rebellion. Both Houses were disconnected from ruling court and unlike virtually every other house, had no interest in the Iron Throne itself but got involved in the war to avenge loved ones at the hands [[spoiler:and end up displacing them as rulers of the Lannisters (Ned and Elia). [[/note]] Additionally, both regions share the fact that they're cultural outliers among the Seven Kingdoms: The Dornish for their aforementioned Rhoynish influences, and the North for being the only kingdom not to have been overrun or assimilated by the Andals. Both care deeply for the smallfolk -- Starks heed the wisdom of First Men, Martells discover the wisdom after Princess Daenerys (no, not our Dany) that was betrothed to their Prince came to conclusion that under their clothes, the children of nobles can't be distinguished from children of smallfolk. In contrast, Gendry develops a genuine friendship with Arya Stark (who is much like a GenerationXerox of Lyanna Stark), they mutually protect each other throughout the hell they've suffered together, and [[{{ShipTease}} developed a close connection]], despite not knowing each other's true identities or having any Stark-Baratheon match forced upon them. Had Gendry and Joffrey been in each other's positions, the kingdom would have been a better place.

** Varys. Both are [[TheSpymaster Spymaster]], {{Magnificent Bastard}}s who are usually underestimated by more "honorable" nobles because of respective commoner's origin and with respective mysterious endgame. Littlefinger prefers Chaos, while Varys supports Order. Both cannot fight, so they order other people fight for them, Littlefinger with Knights of Vale, Varys with [[spoiler:his sparrows, Golden Company and maybe Dany's force]].
** Bronn. Both have low origin who rise fast to high society and marrying noble lady but still disdained by other aristocrats. Both are better off at the end of the book than the start. Bronn with his martial skill, Petyr with his cleverness. Bronn will betray his ally when he knows his ally will betray (or, at least dump) him after objective is completed (like Catelyn after Eyrie) or he has no confidence to do that ([[spoiler:like refusing to championing Tyrion]]), basically betrayal happens after crisis is over, while Littlefinger's betrayal before crisis is over and forcing result favorable in his benefit.
** Davos Seaworth. See above.
** Jon Connington. Both fell in love with a PeerlessLoveInterest (Lady Catelyn Tully and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen respectively) in the backstory, both are extremely bitter men, and both become the guardians of [[spoiler:their beloved's child, who is in disguise as their own, and who they are planning to help retake their family's ancestral lands]]. However, Jon is genuinely devoted to Rhaegar's memory, whereas Petyr seems to value Catelyn more as a symbol than a person, [[spoiler:shows little grief over her death, and is quick to try and turn her daughter into a ReplacementGoldfish]]. Jon views [[spoiler:Aegon]] like a son, whereas Petyr manipulates and molests [[spoiler:Sansa]]. Jon considers Rhaegar's death [[ItsAllMyFault all his fault]], whereas Petyr [[spoiler:shows no such guilt over Catelyn's, even though he began the whole series of events that caused it]]. Jon's role in the plan [[spoiler:to restore Aegon]] to the throne is essentially under Varys' command, whereas Petyr himself is the {{Chessmaster}} behind [[spoiler:getting Sansa to reclaim Winterfell]].

Rickard Karstark seems loyal early on, but ends up murdering prisoners to avenge his sons, causing Robb to execute him. Both Lords appoint their uncles as castellans and both the Lords are captured by the Lannisters, [[spoiler:the Greatjon at the Red Wedding while his son Smalljon Umber is murdered, after Rickard's death his only surviving son Harrion, now Lord Karstark, is captured.]] The Last Hearth castellans split under Bolton rule, with Mors declaring for Stannis and Hother for Roose Bolton, however Mors is clear that he doesn't want to fight his family and the Umbers want their nephew home safely. Rickard's uncle Arnolf Karstark declares for Stannis, [[spoiler:but is really working with the Boltons and planning to betray Stannis, hoping his great-nephew Harrion will be executed for [[EvilUncle this]], enabling his branch of the family to take control of Karhold.]]

** Doran Martell. While the two live a continent away, Wyman plays a very similar role in the story as Doran Martell. Both are physical invalids who gain a reputation as appeasers [[spoiler: while secretly plotting revenge and the restoration of the House they support]]. So far though, Wyman has been more successful and open about his motives. They also both have female relatives (Doran's daughter Arianne and bastard nieces the Sand Snakes, and Wyman's younger granddaughter Wylla) who more openly want revenge.
** Illyrio Mopatis. Both obese, powerful man, and both brilliant planners, plotting to put someone in rule.
** The Rat Cook. They were insulted by an Andal King, so murdered the King's son and fed them to the King in a pie. They had a right to vengeance, but were punished for transgressing [[SacredHospitality Guest Right]]. Wyman Manderly's [[spoiler:son Wendel and King Robb Stark are murdered by the Freys and Boltons while they are the Frey's guests. In revenge, Manderly murders three of the Freys, puts them in pies, and serves them to the Freys and Boltons, even wanting a song about the Rat Cook. ** Arya Stark. Despite being the only one of Cat's children not to take after her physically, and her TomboyPrincess attitude not much resembling Cat's ProperLady one, it's clear that Arya inherited a lot of personality traits from her mother: her HotBlooded nature, her tendency to be more practical and cynical than the rest of their family, and less inclined to follow Honor Before Reason, her strong sense of justice that often translates into a desire for vengeance, and her ability to hold a grudge. However, Cat was the eldest child and PromotedToParent very young, meaning she grew up [[TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask wearing the queenly mask]], and so the traits she shares with her daughter only really become apparent as she becomes increasingly traumatised.
