* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Several, but notable is Joseph's first scene, where he's presiding over a child support hearing. When the guy protests he's broke and unemployed, Joseph confiscates his new truck, and shrugs off his protests with a short but important speech about the law. Then he tells the ex-wife exactly who to talk to at the dealership when she sells it back, and then makes an off-hand comment about figuring out how pregnancy happens. This establishes almost every important part of his character in a single scene.

Added DiffLines:

* Irony: When flirting with small-town girl Carla, Hank jokes about her "incest-free bloodline". After making out with her, he finds out she's the daughter of his old girlfriend, and may be his daughter. [[spoiler: Turns out, she's his niece.]]

Later, he signs off on the Judge's compassionate release.

Hank Palmer (Downey) is a successful defense attorney who has received news that his mother has passed, and returns to his hometown of Carlinville, Indiana to attend the funeral. Once he arrives, he reunites with several members of his family, including older brother Glen ( [[Creator/VincentDOnofrio Vincent D'Onofrio]]), younger brother Dale (Jeremy Strong), and his father, local judge Joseph Palmer (Duvall), with whom Hank doesn't have a very good relationship.

Although Hank decides to leave due to the friction between himself and Joseph, he is forced to remain in the town when it is revealed that Joseph was involved in a fatal hit-and-run involving a victim he previously ruled on during a court case. Hank decides to defend his father in court after the latter's initial choice for attorney proves disastrous, and the younger Palmer faces the tough prosecutor Dwight Dickham (Creator/BillyBobThornton), who is pushing for a first-degree murder charge. At the same time, Hank reconnects with his family members and his estranged girlfriend Sam (Creator/VeraFarmiga), whom he abandoned 20 years earlier and wishes to make amends with.

Hank decides to leave early as his conflict with Joseph has gotten to be too much, but he's forced to stay as something very shocking comes to light: Joseph appears to have run over a guy whom he did not get along with at all (Joseph had put the man in jail), making this look very much to be a case of first-degree murder. Joseph does not remember what happened and has to to go court with Hank as his lawyer (okay, later on, but that's not because Hank didn't want to), once again forcing Hank to confront his damaged relationship with his father.

Thanks for editing but I don\'t think there is anything wrong with adding little jokes to summaries

The Judge is a 2014 movie, Henry “Hank” Palmer (played by Creator/RobertDowneyJr ) is a lawyer - a good but amoral one who gotten tragic news, his mother (played by Catherine Cummings…. kinda she played a corpse but Carol S Austin played a younger version) has passed, he chose to go to his hometown whom he hadn't seen in years and has not so fond memories of it to play his respect for his dead mother.

While back in his hometown he was returned to his family-Glen his older brother (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) and Dale-his younger brother (played by Jeremy Strong) and of course his father whom he doesn't have a very good relationship with Judge Joseph Palmer (funny enough his actor shares the first name of Downey-Robert Duvall, like father like son?)

Hank decided to leave early as his conflict with his father gotten to be too much but was forced to go back as something very shocking happened-Joseph had appeared to run over a guy…. and a guy he did not get along with at all (he had put him in jail) making this look very much to be a case of first degree murder but Joseph does not remember and he has to to go court with Hank of his lawyer of course (okay later on but that’s not because Hank didn't want to) once again forcing him to conflict his damaged relationship with his father and secrets are revealed.

The movie was released on October 10 but to critics was mix criticism going to the mistake of the murder plot NOT being the main focus, thinking it was a cliche storm, there was also criticism into thinking the characters were flat and without development, but there also praised the movie thinking RDJ and Robert Duvall did great acting.
