Besides being Speculative Troping, this is Not An Example. It's not a "gag" to use an element of the work being adapted in an adaptation. That's what adaptation is.

** Sonic's use of rings to teleport people to different places in the trailer is a nod to the Warp Rings in the VideoGameS/1, VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles, and VideoGame/SonicMania, which he could use to travel to the games' special stages.

Speculative Troping - example is written in the future tense. We do not trope the future. That's speculation. We trope the present.

Is there an issue? Send a MessageReason:
Speculative Troping - Makes broad assumptions about the setting of the film that are impossible to support with a trailer citation. Also includes speculative language ("presumably").

%%* HumanFocusedAdaptation: It's set in a rural small town with Sonic as presumably the only anthropomorphic animal, rather than either the WorldOfFunnyAnimals setting (with Robotnik/Eggman being the TokenHuman) or the LionsAndTigersAndHumansOhMy settings of the games.

Per Creating A Work Page For An Upcoming Work, trope entries for unreleased works must cite what publicly-available, tropable material (such as a trailer, teaser, etc.) they come from. Uncited entries are assumed to be referring to the final work and, thus, speculative. Do not unhide hidden entries without addressing the issues that caused them to be hidden. For Remake Cameo, Gary Chalk is right there in that precise context and role. The same goes for the logo joke and the layman's terms. There is not a single thing wrong, inaccurate, or sparse about the tropes that would merit them being censored out.

* %%* MovieSuperheroesWearBlack: Or supervillains in this case, but it's ZigZagged. Robotnik is introduced in a black suit and looking fairly normal, with a neat mustache, while in various shots through the trailer he's shown having adopted his trademark look piece by piece (red coat, round goggles), before finally fully embracing his game counterpart appearance (bald and with a wild, bushy mustache).
* %%* MythologyGag:
** %%** The badge for the Green Hills Sheriff department has a background depicting a river, hills and greenery, which would be a basic description of GreenHillZone.

** %%** The idea of Sonic possibly being extraterrestrial is reminiscent of the premise of the initial seasons of Anime/SonicX, which saw Sonic and company being transported to Earth and living there among the humans. ** %%** Sonic's pose during the scene where dozens of missiles are shooting at him is a reference to his idle animation from the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
** %%** While Robotnik is unambiguously villainous in this movie, his origins as a relatively sane individual before turning full-heel has its roots in both the ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogPromoComic and Fleetway's Comicbook/SonicTheComic, where Robotnik was a kindly scientist named Kintobor before a lab accident.
** %%** Sonic's ability to use rings to teleport people to other places is a nod to the Warp Rings from Sonic 1, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and VideoGame/SonicMania, which Sonic would use to travel to the game's special stages. The concept was also used in VideoGame/Sonic3DBlast, where they were referred to as "Dimension Rings".

After 29 long years, Creator/Sega's MascotWithAttitude speeds his way into theaters in this theatrical debut for the eponymous video game franchise.

A co-production of Sega and Creator/Paramount Pictures, this film is directed by Jeff Fowler in his directorial debut and produced by Film/TheFastAndTheFurious[='=] Neal Moritz in the latter's first film with Paramount after leaving Creator/SonyPictures (This film's original studio). Film/2016 director Tim Miller also serves as executive producer. The film's animation services and visual effects are provided by Sega's Marza Animation Planet studio and Miller's Creator/BlurStudio, the latter of whom have frequently collaborated with Sega on a couple of Sonic the Hedgehog video games, namely VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog and VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006, with assistance from Creator/MovingPictureCompany.

Sonic (voiced by Creator/BenSchwartz) stumbles upon the small town of Green Hills, Montana, whose sheriff, Tom Wachowski, (Creator/JamesMarsden) is sympathetic with Sonic's troubles and offers to help Sonic find his rings, setting the stage for a journey that eventually leads them to San Francisco. Unfortunately for the two heroes, Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Creator/JimCarrey) has followed Sonic and is seeking to stop his journey once and for all. On top of that, the United States government finds out about Sonic's antics and initiates a secret operation to capture him for research purposes, hiring Robotnik to help with their efforts. Facing two simultaneous threats, Sonic will need teamwork from the city of Green Hills, and the support of familiar allies, to regain his rings and defeat Dr. Robotnik.

The film was originally set for release in November 2019, but has been delayed to February 14, 2020. The first trailer can be seen here.

For the other Sonic moviewhich was originally a two-part pilot episode for an OVA edited together into a mini-feature for its US release, see Anime/SonicTheHedgehogTheMovie. If you're looking for the FanFilm, see WebVideo/Sonic.

!!Sonic the Hedgehog contains examples of:

* AdaptationalCurves: Sonic's redesign for this movie ditches his standard RubberhoseLimbs for a much more realistic, muscular looking body. It's safe to say that this Sonic does not skip leg day.%%* AdaptationalJerkass: Implied, as Sonic is supposed to be portrayed in this film as a "juvenile delinquent".
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Robotnik looks much more dashing when played by Jim Carrey. He's in better shape, has a full head of hair, and his mustache is well-groomed. Ultimately averted by the end of the trailer where he's the bald, goggles-wearing, and bushy moustached man we expect Eggman to be.
* AdaptationalSuperpowerChange: In addition to his trademark spin dash and super speed, this incarnation of Sonic has electric quills and can enter BulletTime to redirect projectiles fired his way. His rings also now have the power to grow and form portals, functioning similarly to the Giant Rings that teleported Sonic to the Special Stages in VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles.
%%* AdaptationalVillainy: Also implied with Robotnik, since Jim Carrey described his character in an interview as "pure unbridled evil".%%* AdaptedOut:%%** Sonic's regular teammates Tails and Knuckles are completely absent in this movie. They aren't even referenced in a MythologyGag.%%** The Chaos Emeralds are also shoved aside in favor of the rings.
* AlternateContinuity: As with most adaptations of the franchise, the film will follow its own continuity separate from any previous works.%%* BigBad: Robotnik, naturally.
* BlackComedyBurst: A joke near the end of the trailer has Tom hiding Sonic in a bag and smuggling him into a building. When someone besides him hears Sonic making noise within the bag, this exchange alluding to child abduction ensues:
-->Bystander: Do you have your child in that bag?
-->Tom: No... I mean yes, it's a child, but it's not mine.
-->[pause]
-->Bystander 2: [visibly disturbed] ...That's not your child?
-->[both bystanders walk away]
* ChewingTheScenery: Robotnik's character does this in just a few minutes while interrupting one of the generals in the trailer.
* DastardlyWhiplash: Robotnik's look leans heavily into this.
* Delinquent: Sonic is a juvenile delinquent.
* FriendOnTheForce: The town cop Tom Wachowski, who will be allied with Sonic.
* GodzillaThreshold: The military considers bringing Robotnik to be this because of how obnoxious and insufferable he is.
* GovernmentConspiracy: As if Sonic had nothing else to worry about besides Dr. Robotnik, the United States federal government is seeking to kidnap him as part of an effort to study extraterrestrial life, and it turns out Robotnik is on their payroll.
