** The film's tone is also somewhat grittier and more realistic than most subsequent MCU movies, in part due to its lower budget, and also because the superhero genre was just beginning a shift from the more serious style generally employed by the ''Film/XMen'' film series and Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy, towards the more light-hearted and fun approach that would become largely standard for the genre in the 2010s.

* InvincibleHero: Tony deconstructs this. His Mk. I suit is strong, but is vulnerable from the back and gets stuck in the wall of the cave on his way out. He also manages to skyrocket his way out, but ends up lost in the desert, surrounded by the shards of his shattered armor. His final fight pits him against Stane in an more weaponized version of his armor without his upgraded miniaturized arc reactor, vulnerable and about to die.

Added DiffLines:

* DiligentHeroSlothfulVillain: This is one of the things (beside their feelings about murder and terrorism) that distinguishes Tony Stark from Obadiah Stane. Tony built his Iron Man suits himself, with painstaking work and research over several scenes and montages. In contrast, Obadiah steals Tony's technology to build the Iron Monger suit, doesn't do the work himself, berates and belittles his employees who make the suit for him, and rushes it into use when it's not properly tested. This culminates in a satisfyingly symbolic fashion when they fight in the upper atmosphere, and the Iron Monger suit freezes over due to the "icing problem" that Tony's hard work had already solved for his suit.
