* {{Trumplica}}: Downplayed. The unnamed President has more of a [[UsefulNotes/JohnFKennedy Kennedy-esque]] appearance in dark hair with some grey streaks, but it's a very distinctive, high volume hair style. His news broadcast indicates some of Trump's tendency to exaggerate ("The greatest military strike ever made") and it's said that he has a major and violent anti-journalist policy. He's also dissolved Federal and ''likely'' State agencies before, as Trump has repeatedly threatened to do.

* ByronicHero: Lee is a RareFemaleExample; she's a brooding, troubled, and icy EmptyShell of a woman who struggles with an immense amount of trauma that she copes with by hiding it under a mask of grim stoicism. She shows something of a softer side when she's around her friends and has a HiddenHeartOfGold, but she doesn't even crack a smile until Jessie is able to coax one out of her.

Lee herself is almost single-mindedly on her career at the expense of even her own friends, and it's implied that the lack of anyone tying them down contributes to the group's [[DissonantSerenity general attitude]] towards the atrocities they document.

Set in the near future, the story sees the USA being engulfed in a new civil war, with nineteen states having seceded from the country. On one side lies the Western Forces, a militia group led by the secessionist states while on the other side are the loyalist states, commandeered by the corrupt president. In the middle of this war, a group of journalists--Lee (Dunst), Joel (Moura), Sammy (Henderson), and Jessie (Spaeny)--go on a dangerous mission to make it to Washington D.C. as the Western Forces gear to attack the capital, navigating through a war-torn America.

Added DiffLines:

* CharacterDevelopment:
** Lee's coldly professional and stoic demeanor gradually cracks as the movie goes on as she defrosts towards Jessie and sees things that shock even her, and after [[spoiler:Sammy's death]], she learns to value the lives of her friends over her career, [[spoiler:eventually sacrificing herself to save Jessie]].
** Nearly getting killed by the white nationalist soldiers and [[spoiler:being forced to watch three of his friends die in front of him]] takes a very hard toll on Joel, who completely crumbles into despair afterwards and becomes much more emotionally withdrawn as a result. [[spoiler:Seeing Lee's death at the hands of Secret Service agents causes him to completely forgo getting an interview with the president and coldly lets him get executed instead.]]
** Jessie goes from being a plucky, naive idealist to a hardened and cynical photojournalist after witnessing repeated atrocities, and becomes just as ConditionedToAcceptHorror as her mentor while also turning into an adrenaline junkie like Joel, though her inexperience leads her to be much more reckless than he is.
