* {{Gainaxing}}/JigglePhysics: The maid, Yrsa, seems to have had quite a lot of care taken to make sure her [[GagBoobs large tracts of land]] sway and move realistically. Almost makes you wonder if they used motion capture on those as well.

* DeathOfTheOldGods: Beowulf lamenting than his people have abandoned "the gods of might and power for a crying martyr." Also doubles up as an in-universe example of DidNotDoTheResearch since this is ''completely'' [[UnreliableNarratpr in character]] for him.

* BadassNormal: The titular character. He swam for six days in chain mail with a sword, killing sea monsters on the fifth night ([[UnreliableVoiceover he claims nine, but we only actually see a couple -- and that's still very impressive]]), ''tore out'' Grendel's arm, wielded a giant's sword and stood up to a dragon's breath for a long time and, with a timely distraction, killed the dragon.
** He had a sword, but no chain mail.

* DarkAgeEurope: "The time of heroes is dead, the christ god has killed it, leaving nothing but weeping martyrs and fear and shame"

* RedRightHand: The movie gives Grendel's Mother the power to assume the pleasing form of AngelinaJolie, but she has a prehensile and whiplike ponytail, as well as [[NarmCharm humourously]] high-heeled feet.

* UncannyValley: A bit disturbing at first, but gets better as the film goes on; clearly the crew learned a few things from ''ThePolarExpress''. For the most part, the expressions and characters themselves don't invoke this a whole lot. But there is a slightly creepy air whenever they're prominently handling objects or interacting with them, due to the objects not seeming to have any weight and simply "float" in the characters' hands.

** The titular character fights the monster Grendel completely nude, with his goods blocked from view by his leg, a sword, and a table, among other things. Hell, ''the shadow of his thigh'' blocks his fun bits at several points. If you slow down the film, and realize there are parts where his genitals would be visible but aren't, it seems like Beowulf is either [[IfYouKnowWhatIMean not a shower]] or a eunuch.

** The titular character fights the monster Grendel completely nude, with his goods blocked from view by his leg, a sword, and a table, among other things. Hell, ''steam'' blocks his fun bits at one point.

* PlayingGertrude: AngelinaJolie plays Grendel's mother. Grendel is played by Crispin Glover, who is older than she is. Although, you know, her character is ReallySevenHundredYearsOld.

** The titular character fights the monster Grendel in the altogether, with his goods blocked from view by his leg, a sword and a table, among other things.

* TranslationConvention: The people here speak modern English, except for Grendel, who does speaks Anglosaxon.

* UnreliableNarrator: Takes this tack in regards to Beowulf's exploits for which there are no witnesses. Most notably, he didn't exactly "kill" Grendel's Mother, IfYouKnowWhatIMean. And he did more than "slay sea monsters" during that storm, IfYouKnowWhatIMean. (It should be noted, though, that not all of the film's divergences from the standard story can be explained this way.)

* AdaptationDecay: Played Straight and played with. This differs from the source material ever increasingly over time (showing a possible real story behind the legend), however, this is the point of the movie.
* AlasPoorVillain: Grendel.

** He's a Lover as well as a Fighter: he has dalliances with two CuteMonsterGirl 's ( the mermaid after the battle with the sea serpents and of course Grendel's MILF) and even has a mistress.

** This troper is shocked that he is apparently the only one who realizes that this whole subplot is almost an exact copy of the twisted and tragic family drama of the mythological Irish hero Cuchulainn, his Scottish conquest Aife, and their son Connla!

** He says that he plunged his [[DoubleEntendre "sword"]] into the hearts of these supersexy monsters...

* TokenLoli: Ursula, Beowulf's mistress when he is king
