** Peggy Carter returns after her previous cameos in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier'' and ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'', and her starring role in ''Series/AgentCarter''. This gives Peggy the unique distinction of being in five MCU works in just over a year: ''The Winter Soldier'', [[Recap/AgentsOfSHIELDS2E1Shadows two]] [[Recap/AgentsOfSHIELDS2E8TheThingsWeBury episodes]] of ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', ''Age of Ultron'', ''Agent Carter'', and ''Ant-Man''. In other words, the only MCU live-action media that she ''hasn't'' been in between April 2014 and July 2015 are ''Series/{{Daredevil|2015}}'' and ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'', and the latter isn't even set on Earth.

* DoAnythingRobot: Much like [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy Groot]], the ants resemble a biological version of this trope. Seeing them in action is akin to watching a nanite swarm.

* LighterAndSofter: This movie has a lot more humor and comedy than most of the MCU films (though all of them have plenty of comedic moments), similarly to ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy''.

Like the comic, Darren Cross is the villain, Scott is an ex-criminal tasked with stealing the Ant-Man suit, and Cassie Lang is a major motivation for him becoming a hero (though she's ''not'' an IllGirl here). However, like many things, the story is expanded, changed, and as mentioned, [[SettingUpdate modernized]] to fit the MCU.

* AntiClimaxCut: We see Ant-Man and Yellowjacket, while miniaturized, about to be flattened by a train. Right before it hits, we cut back to a normal human scale, where the collision just looks like a toy train falling over.

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Luis gets a good one when he picks Scott up from prison. Scott asks how Luis's girlfriend is doing, to which Luis responds that [[CrossesTheLineTwice his girlfriend left him, his mom died, and his dad got deported]], [[MoodWhiplash and then]] cheerily reminds Scott that he's still got the van. And he says all of this with a [[ThePollyanna humongous smile]] on his face.

* ArtisticLicenseLawEnforcement: Following reports of a helicopter crash and a fight between two individuals in a family's home, Detective Jim Paxton and his partner Gale arrive to find their former prisoner Scott Lang in his Ant-Man uniform. As Lang tries to explain what happened and make the confused Paxton understand the situation, Paxton ignores him and instead pulls out a taser and [[StaticStunGun shocks him, knocking him out]] and putting him in the police car to be taken back to jail. In reality, a cop would be fired for excessive use of force if they tased someone mid-sentence. Tasers are part of the force continuum. They are not the first thing a cop would use encountering someone. Tasers are not apprehension devices -- they are designed to overcome aggression and resistance.

** Your wife dies [[spoiler:a hero]], and as a result you shut out your daughter, pack her off to boarding school when she's seven, and cause an estrangement that leads to her booting you out of your company. Although she comes to you for help when it turns out her boss is crazy, she thinks that she ought to be the one to wear the suit that takes its toll on the human body, [[spoiler:and you think that telling her what happened to her mother would be dangerous]].
** On the other side of the coin, your father sends you to boarding school while you're grieving for your mother, and doesn't take notice of you for years and lies about how your mother died. It's a small wonder that Hope holds a grudge, though she mellows after Scott explains to her that Hank is being an OverprotectiveDad and Hank tells her [[spoiler:how her mother died.]]
** [[spoiler:There's an armed lunatic with a grudge against you in your daughter's bedroom, and you can't get to her. Alternately, there's an armed lunatic with a grudge against your stepdaughter's biological father in her room, despite your best efforts to keep her safe. Or still worse, there's an armed lunatic with a grudge against your ex in your daughter's bedroom, both the men you care about are in there desperately fighting said lunatic, and all you can see of what's happening to all three of them is that weird giant junk and ''laser beams'' keep bursting out of the walls.]]

* SpotOfTea: Tea is the go-to drink for the film's characters. Scott even says that he's going to go make a pot after realizing that he [[MomentKiller ruined a tender father-daughter moment]] between Hank and Hope.

* AgeLift: Hank Pym, a contemporary of [[ComicBook/IronMan Tony Stark]] and [[ComicBook/IncredibleHulk Bruce Banner]] in the comics, is depicted as a retired superhero from the 1970s and '80s, and knows Howard Stark much better than his son. The same can be said of his wife Janet.

* RecycledPremise: Once more, a Marvel superhero in his first MCU movie must fight an enemy that has a newer, more powerful version of his own powers, like in ''Film/IronMan1'' and ''Film/TheIncredibleHulk''.

** Hank is a retired superhero who is mostly around as an inventor and MissionControl. He also has a shrunken tank in his pocket, which he can use in a pinch as a weapon by growing it out. This status reflects a similar status while in the ''ComicBook/WestCoastAvengers''. He was retired during this period, acted as the team's SmartGuy, and often contained items and weapons in his pocket which were infused with Pym particles, allowing him to grow and shrink them depending on what he needed. He even had a tank.

** Scott beats the Falcon by shrinking down and sabotaging his flight pack from the inside, and is later told about the dangers(and necessity) of going sub-atomic. [[spoiler: To defeat Yellowjacket, Scott has to go sub-atomic and sabotage his suit from the inside.]]

* GoodVersusGood: [[spoiler:Scott Lang (Ant Man) VS Samuel Wilson (The Falcon). One is an Anti-Hero looking to get some tech to save the world, and the other is an Avenger defending a superhero base from would be thieves.]]

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Downplayed, but Hope has a brief moment of regret when she realises that by calling the cops on Scott she's risked sending him back to prison and damaging his relationship with his daughter in the process. Particularly since the main reason she did it was out of pique at not being selected to wear the Ant Man suit herself.
