Subverted when we see things from Kyoko's perspective, where she reveals that A) she said it because what ''else'' do you say to someone who devoted their life to making their dead mama proud, and B) ''she has a massive breakdown at Unit 02, cursing out her AU self'' and sobbing that, even in another universe, she's "still a shitty mother"]].

* TheUnreveal: The real truth of [[spoiler:Naoko Akagi's death]]. [[spoiler:Balthazar!Naoko]] was in the process of explaining things to Shinji when [[spoiler:"she" was "killed" by Iruel]]. Teasers for ch. 58 have convoluted this even further. Tied into this is [[spoiler:the origins of Rei and the Ree, and their original purpose]].

** Pretty much any major Shinji / Asuka scene.
*** In particular, Chapter 21. The chapter itself is nothing but ItGotWorse for Asuka. Then the ending rolls by, and as the author put it (After [[EarthScorpion someone]] described an alternate, intensely depressing way to end the chapter):
---> This is certainly now a nightmare scenario for everyone involved. And it would have happened and would have been the way the chapter concluded- if Shinji didn't go into her room at the end of the chapter and settle things with her. The problem is, Asuka has three pillars her life is built around, and Kyoko managed to kick out two of them in just two minutes. And now Shinji's built one of those pillars so high she can see her apartment from the top of it.

ND!Gendo is struggling with the idea that [[spoiler:Yui might be dead]] and is contemplating suicide, but tells himself that everybody else is counting on him, and if [[spoiler:Yui really is lost beyond recovery, then Canon!Shinji, who has been transported to the ND!Universe, will need a father.]]
