* With the end of the series and the resolution of the romantic pairings, [[ShipSinking upset shipping]] fanfic writers have taken to the task of making their own endings with their favourite pairing (usually Naruto/Sakura) fulfilled by going full FanonDiscontinuity with the canon ending, some of the common trends are:

* Various characters become members of Anbu. Or join Akatsuki. At least, until that was revealed in canon to be true (well, the latter two, at least).

* A large portion of fanfics often have Naruto's [[BornLucky already insanely good luck]] taken to it's [[UpToEleven logical extreme]] with him casually bankrupting multiple casinos.

* ''Naruto'' has tons of PeggySue fics. Those who usually end up going back are the members of Team 7 (including Kakashi) and Shikamaru, sometimes individually, sometimes together. The reason for going back usually has something to do with some event that ended well in canon ended catastrophically instead, causing a BadFuture where the time traveler has nothing left to lose by going back. The event varies, but recent ones make it the Fourth Great Shinobi War, wherein Madara and/or Tobi/[[spoiler:Obito]] won. They also commonly ignore [[spoiler:Princess Kaguya's involvement.]]

* Back in the early days of the ''Naruto'' fandom, "Naruto retakes the Chunin Exams" fics use to be common. Then canon trudged on and Naruto became so powerful that pitting him against genin wouldn't be very interesting outside of making it a CrackFic, causing the idea to become obsolete.[[note]]One fine example of just such a CrackFic was ''FanFic/TheWorldsGreatestChuninExamTeam''.[[/note]] Ironically, this plot was used in an OVA where they fix the problem of him being too strong by making rules specifically barring anyone from using senjutsu to make it fair, even though the exams are specifically geared to [[DramaticallyMissingThePoint reward those who cheat and use every advantage they have]]. Of course he breaks the rule and is [[StatusQuoIsGod disqualified from the exam]].

* Fanfics where either the Konoha 12 as adults, or their children (usually Boruto and/or Sarada), are [[PeggySue transported into the past]] have been popping up since the manga ended. Most have them go back to the pre-timeskip, usually pre-Chunin Exam days.

* Just like many authors use fics to point out their perceived impression of Kakashi being an awful teacher (see above), there are just as many who do the same with the Ninja Academy. It's very common fanfics in which a Jonin-sensei tests a team of newly minted Genin, finds that they're much weaker and ill-prepared to be a ninja than expected, asks them what did they learn at the Academy, and gets shocked upon finding how much the standards decayed since the Jonin was an Academy student. This may or may not end in finding out that a spy has been trying to sabotage Konoha's future generations of ninjas by quietly lowering the Academy standards.

* Even if ''Naruto'''s fandom is [[BrokenBase broken beyond repair]], there is something most fans unanimously dislike: the fact that Naruto never made past Genin in the manga. It would be easier to mention the fanfics that ''doesn't'' give Naruto a(n admittedly well deserved) promotion to Chunin or Jonin.

* Many Naruto/Hinata fanfics have quite a few elements in common, besides the [[FanPreferredCouple obvious]] [[RelationshipUpgrade one]]. Hilariously, some of this elements [[AscendedFanon made their way into]] ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie'':

** Many fics have pointed out the seemingly ridiculous usefulness of the Shadow Clone learning technique and Naruto subsequently [[TookALevelInBadass takes multiple levels in badass]].
** Since the nature of the Tailed Beasts was rather ambiguous during Naruto: Part I, many fics simplify matters by making them conform to ''Manga/InuYasha'' demon standards. Now that we know of their origins and most of the questions are answered, this has decreased, although that unsatisfied minority simply use FanonDiscontinuity and ignore said revelation -- which, granted, is not unheard of for the fandom to begin with.

*** Making their own versions of chapters 699-700 where Sakura rebukes Sasuke's apology and then hooks up with Naruto.
*** Revealing that the entire canon ending is in reality [[SchrodingersButterfly taking place in the Infinite Tsukiyomi dreamworld]].
*** Rewriting the entire [[{{Canon}} canonical]] movie ''[[Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie The Last]]'' to either switch Hinata's role in it with Sakura, or somehow making Naruto pairing up with Sakura instead of Hinata at the end.
*** Divorcing or outright widowing the characters. This usually happens with people who like Boruto, Himawari, Sarada, Inojin, and/or Shikadai too much to {{retcon}} them away.

** Even if ''Naruto'''s fandom is [[BrokenBase broken beyond repair]], there is something most fans unanimously dislike: the fact that Naruto never made past Genin in the manga. ** There are dozens of fan-works where Naruto's parents either didn't die or at minimum one of them, usually Kushina, survived. The anime even explored this in a filler arc (along with the Uchiha massacre never happening).
*** On that topic, some fanfics have Jiraiya actually taking his status as Naruto’s godfather seriously if Minato and/or Kushina are dead.

* A lot of fics in which the genin teams are different, either because someone else is teaching Team 7 or someone else wanted Naruto (such as, for example, ''[[FanFic/{{Team8}} Team 8]]''), which shuffled the teams around (these fics are most often [[FanPreferredCouple Naruto/Hinata]]). A recurring theme in these is the perception that Kakashi in canon is a ''terrible'' teacher and Naruto could be so much stronger if he were trained "properly" (and usually made to wear clothes that aren't [[HighlyVisibleNinja orange]], despite Naruto's choice of clothing never being treated as an issue in canon).

* Naruto get a sword and becomes a MasterSwordsman.

* Naruto snaps and become a cold-blooded killer.

* The reason Kurama attacked Konoha is someone (usually Orochimaru) wearing Konoha headband killed his (or depending on the story her) cubs used to be common in the early days. This became obsolete when the real cause of Kurama's attack on Konoha was established.

* Minato and Kushina survives the Kyubi attack and has another child. They later focuses all their attention on the favourite child completely [[ParentalNeglect neglecting]] [[TheUnfavorite Naruto]] in the process... For some reason the other child will usually be a girl. There are very few fics that had Minato and Kushina loving both Naruto and the younger child equally. If they did survive. The neglect is rather baffling because Kushina and Minato are actually loving parents who will love their child equally and this can be made into an {{Irony}} as Kushina canonically wishes to have a big happy family...

* Fanfics where Naruto turns out to be the last survivor of a made up clan[[labelnote:note]]Usually the Namikaze[[/labelnote]] and gets a new bloodline (particularly the Rinnegan) or Kurama in some unexplained way gives alters his genes giving him the bloodline. [[spoiler: Before the Uzumaki Clan was revealed in canon but Naruto still doesn't have a bloodline.]]

* Fanfics where Naruto turns out to be the last survivor of a made up clan[[labelnote:note]]Usually the Namikaze[[/labelnote]] and gets a new bloodline (particularly the Rinnegan) or Kurama some unexplained way gives alters his genes giving him the bloodline. [[spoiler: Before the Uzumaki Clan was revealed in canon but Naruto still doesn't have a bloodline.]]

* A very popular fic is [=NaruHina=] shippers making Naruto as dumb as possible and having constantly mocked by everyone for not noticing Hinata's feelings. Hinata, herself is usually portrayed as a stuttering like crazy for two seconds before fainting. This one got so popular that [[Manga/RockLeesSpringtimeOfYouth it's found its way into licensed material.]]
