Xylene is easily frustrated with him and humanity in general, who are seen as narrow-minded, xenophobic, and horribly barbaric by galactic standards. Her experiences with Max lead her to accept that while humanity in general has problems, there are perhaps one or two humans worth knowing.
* LoveAtFirstSight: At the end of the story, Max is wandering through St. Louis during his physical recovery before he's supposed to report to NASA in Houston for astronaut training. He stumbles across Verdona, his future wife, at a block party while she's trying to buy a bottle of soda. He's thunderstruck from the moment he lays eyes on her. Verdona takes a little more convincing.
* RockBeatsLaser: In the original draft of Little Moments, Max told Xylene that his first kill on the job was a Tetramand. Here, Xylene is present for it as Max, deprived of his pistol, kills the four-armed Black Sun slaver with a knife. Given that the Tetramand had him out-armed by every definition, the kill is especially satisfying.

After an attack by one of Vilgax's drones during which she is knocked out, Gwen blames herself for letting go of Ben's hand and later for not being there with him when he fought Vilgax.
