To describe it...well, you know how [[FanFic/ShinjiAndWarhammer40K certain]] [[FanFic/ThousandShinji other]] ''Evangelion'' fan-fics head straight for the CrazyAwesome, blending GrimDark and RuleOfCool in a seamless mix which creates a valiant effort which [[TengenToppaGurrenLagann goes beyond the impossible]] impossible, kicks reason to the curb,]] and undoes the bleakness of ''Evangelion''? Well, ''Aeon [[WellThatIsNotThatTrope Well,]] ''[[WellThatIsNotThatTrope Aeon Natum Engel''...doesn't.Engel]]'' [[WellThatIsNotThatTrope doesn't]]. It's cold, it's hard, and it's cynical. Logistics and planning beats hotbloodedness and bravery, and, despite that, humanity is still losing. The "good guys" do monstrous things in the name of survival, the "bad guys" are [[BlackAndGreyMorality very hard to tell]] from the "good guys", and the [[CompleteMonster really bad guys]] are...well, really bad indeed. It's very well written, and stylish, in a dark, understated kind of way, and sometimes induces headaches from the sheer amount of [[JigsawPuzzlePlot elaborate plotting]], but don't go into it thinking that it's necessarily light reading.

** He spends a lot of time around highly intelligent people snarking at each other. Some of those discussions between the various scientists are far too accurate, in this troper's opinion, to be anything but based off real life.
