***** [[spoiler: Archer is a Counter-Guardian, not a Heroic Spirit. Like Saber, he's still alive and frozen in time due to a compact with Gaia, and is re-entered into the timeline rather than being contained in Akasha as the Heroic Spirits are. Since Saber was destined to become a Heroic Spirit before her pact with Gaia, she follows similar rules, but it's never fully addressed how a Counter-Guardian could be summoned as a Servant. This is used to explain why Saber can remember everything from her previous manifestations, and why Archer retains thousands of years worth of experiences, but it's specifically stated that the other Heroic Spirits won't remember anything of their time as Servants because their originals don't actually leave Akasha.]]

** FinalFantasyII wasn't released in the states until 2003, but that didn't stop darkhorses emerging in Japanese fandom, namely Minwu the White Wizard, for bucking the StaffChick trend, having HoYay with Firion, and Bishounen being attractive and baring his midriff; and The Emperor, due to his good looks, scheming ways, and that famous death cry. *** And not too far behind them is none other than Golbez himself. Not only is he a pretty damn good villain (who is complex enough without needing to break the WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief) and a badass mage (), but he tends to receive retroactive CharacterDevelopment with each revisitation to his character instead undergoing Flanderization like so many characters in this series do. ** Despite its (arguable) status as one of the series' black sheep, the Adorkable Laguna Loire stands out the cast of FinalFantasyVIII. He just pumps you full of lead 'til you die. Oh, and [[spoiler:where else do you think Squall got his looks from?]]
** Vivi from FinalFantasyIX is a darkhorse mainly due to being one of the biggest Woobies in the series. What made him even more endearing to said fanbase was his BewareTheNiceOnes moment against Black Waltz 3. Notably, he's the only one of two non-Nomura designs (the other being Setzer) to have made it into the KingdomHearts series.
*** LadyOfWar[=/=]HotAmazon Beatrix and the aforementioned Black Waltz 3 are held in pretty high regard as well. While Beatrix serves as TheDragon to the Queen of Alexandria, remains a prominent character throughout the game, and a MagicKnight that absolutely puts Steiner to shame fifty times over, Black Waltz 3 was a bit player at best. His appearance most likely helped.
** If there is one thing people are in agreement on about FinalFantasyX, it's that Auron is such an engaging character that you forget he's supposed to be TheObiWan. Maybe it's because he gets most of the best lines and keeps his histrionics to a bare minimum. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that he breathes Badass.
*** This carries over to his inclusion in KingdomHeartsII as a party member in the Underworld, where it's strongly implied that, unlike the other FF characters, this isn't some AU version; it's THE Auron.

** When Balthier of FinalFantasyXII proclaimed himself as the "leading man", no one in the fanbase was quick to correct him. Also, there's Al-Cid Margrace and Judge Magister Gabranth. The latter was popular enough to make it into the aforementioned Dissidia. On the other hand, Montblanc (originally from FinalFantasyTactics Advanced) cements himself as a BreakoutCharacter in this game, as he's probably the second most iconic element of the Ivalice games behind the Judges.

*** Really, search Lugia and Ho-Oh on any art site, and Lugia is pretty much guaranteed to get around double the results. Even more significant when you consider that Ho-Oh had much more of a push for him: he was the first Legendary to appear (in the first episode, before his generation was even around), he has more connection with the plot (Ho-Oh is in the middle of a city, Lugia is in the depths of an out-of-the-way island) and other Legendaries of Gold and Silver (being responsible for the creation of three of the new Legendaries), and he was generally built up as the symbol of Generation 2. In the face of all this, Lugia became the most popular by a long shot.
