** An example of TropesAreNotBad, as her being overpowered was a common complaint against the sequels; as mentioned above, Rey is hardly as powerful as she is in canon, especially initially. She is able to hold her own with a staff and is pretty resourceful (especially Cynical Rey)/knows some fighting skills with a staff (Fangirl Rey)/is pretty skilled with a lightsaber all things considered (Padawan Rey), but she still gets her butt kicked a lot. Even by the end, she has far fewer abilities than her canon version had by the end, and she had to train for all five years from the start of ''Legacy'' to the beginning of ''Rebirth'' to earn them, whereas canon Rey only had one year.

* PsychopathicManchild: Kylo Rem. Already having had a troubled history, the Dark Side has only served to heighten his emotions to turn him into the volatile berserker he is now. While aged down somewhat, he's still a (at the beginning) 27 year old giant of a man with the emotional maturity of a 16-year-old at oldest (if that) who throws destructive tantrums and panic attacks, literally storms back to his room to cry, has serious daddy and mommy issues, has a tendency to be slavishly loyal and short-sighted, is obviously painfully insecure despite trying to hide it, and shrinks like a puppy when Snoke scolds or berates him. Though not that anyone in the First Order except Snoke or Hux dares to say it because they're all terrified of him, as no one who has defied him other than those two has come out alive.

** Poe, self-described “born in the cockpit”, was clearly a teen prodigy because he was ''13'' when he got into flight school and according to supplementary material graduated at 17, becoming a Captain when he was barely 21. While this may have been less of an oddity in the Rebellion, and the Republic Armed Forces does have a slightly younger structure due to the youth of the nation, it is also a much more conventional military than the Rebellion and as such Poe’s age especially stands out in-universe too, even if it’s sort of justified by his upbringing.

There’s also irony in the fact that despite being non Force-Sensitive, he’s the most Jedi-like initially, and has the most heroic personality despite being the least in the spotlight comparatively.

** Aside from the entering flight academy at 12 thing, according to pre-story fics Poe began playing with flight simulators when he was 6 and by the time he was 11 was good enough to be able to take Ben for a joyride and land at least somewhat safely.

* LighterAndSofter: A good part of supplementary material is the characters interacting that wouldn’t fit in the movie format. If the focus is the First Order it’s usually not, but if it isn’t it tends to be fluff.
* MoodWhiplash: In the 4-part compilation "25 ABY", following a normal day in the life of the main four from the same year before the events of the sequel remakes, Rey's ficlet is a short but bitter record of a desperate 10-year-old girl's attempts to survive in a hostile, uncaring planet and her growing misanthropy, Finn's is a bleak, depressing peek into the emotionally stunting life of a [[ChildSoldiers 14-year-old First Order trooper in training]] that is a cross between a Literature/NineteenEightyFour-esque dystopia novel and WarIsHell, both featuring rampant TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior and an oppressive depressing tone (especially Finn’s), and Ben's is borderline if not outright psychological horror about the late-stage psychological torment of a mentally ill 18-year-old boy from said boy’s warped, self-loathing perspective. ...And then sandwiched between Finn and Ben there’s Poe's, showing a day in the life of a young early-20s Republic Armed Forces Major anticipating his promotion and his interactions with those around him as he goes about his day, by far having the most normal life out of the four, even if there is the tense backdrop of preparing for another potential war. While expected due to the whole crux of Poe’s character being that he’s the (relatively) “normal”, well-adjusted one, the sheer difference can still be pretty intense. The darkest place the fic goes or even flirts with is when Ben is mentioned by Han and Leia and Poe suspects that something is up with him (pending), and vague mentions of how costly the war could be. This is also generally the case for the other stories that follow, being mostly cheerful or action-oriented, and while Poe still does have some darker stories (e.g. mourning falling comrades), they are pretty few and nothing compared to how bleak the others can get at their worst, the exceptions being a few of the ones he shares with Ben.

* OnlySaneMan: Downplayed. Poe, though not in the typical way, as he's less the serious straight man, and more the most normal guy; a laid-back, wisecracking, well-adjusted, established member of society who loves his droid and sort-of parental figures, sharing an adventuring party with a misanthropic, traumatized former scavenger and an emotionally stunted ex-soldier. This is especially the case if one includes Kylo, who is downright mentally unstable, on the mix. He even jokes that "Guess I'm the resident normal guy here!". He's also the only one in the big four who has any social skills until at least partway through ''Legacy''. The effect is balanced by the presence of the original trilogy cast, however.

* ThereAreNoTherapists: Played with. Some of Luke’s training methods he apparently found in the old texts are based heavily on real psychology and therapies, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy, just with a strong spiritual/magical component. However, this trope is arguably why Ben’s fall couldn’t be stopped. Shonengirl has outright compared Luke to a therapist at some points.

Added DiffLines:

** Rey and Finn as a duo to Kylo: Rey was raised with no expectations put on her, no grand vision for her life, and had no reason to care about what others would think of her, growing up lonely and cared by no one. After she becomes willing to accept and love Luke her father, while she does become willing to and even takes solace in the fact that she’s an heir to the bloodline, it’s heavily implied that she’s more happy to know that she has a family that loves her first, the whole HeroicLineage thing second. Finn was a cog in a machine, just one out of many, and has no lineage of any note whatsoever, but ultimately chose to leave the First Order to the side of good. At the beginning of the story, they are leaving a life of harshness and cruelty for one of adventure, but also one of understanding and true friendship and love, things they barely if ever desired before due to their conditions growing up. Meanwhile Kylo seemingly leaves a life of prestige and love for the First Order and the darkness. He is obsessed with carrying on his family’s legacy, it having weighed down on his shoulders all his life to the point that he eventually became unable to see his family as a normal family but idols to be worshipped and something he is failing to live up to. He was in his backstory constantly starved for love and still is, but keeps trying to reject it because he thinks he isn’t worth it anymore. But Kylo also has similarities tying him to one or both; being raised and groomed to do evil and having an underdeveloped sense of individuality (Finn), a defensive and very reactive, anger-prone personality, not to mention being cousins (Rey), starting the trilogy out “evil”, distrustfulness, and an underlying sense of loneliness (both).
--> '''Rey:''' No, I don’t understand! You had everything! Me? I had nothing! I would’ve killed for a life like you, Kylo! But you threw it away! And what do you do with all that power? You just push people like Finn around and use them!

* {{Foil}}: Many.
** Rey was badly neglected, never seeing herself as of any importance but still trying to survive, not caring about ideologies or causes, is fiercely independent and self-reliant, and is really, really BookDumb. Finn meanwhile was well cared for as a soldier, and lived under the assumption that the First Order fought for the good of the galaxy and that it was worthy of devoting his whole existence to, never perceiving of himself as an individual as much as part of one big machine, but seems to be educated on some level. However, they also have more similarities than one would expect.
** Poe for basically all of the main four, not just for not having the Force, but his defining trait being that he’s a genuine NiceGuy who does things because it’s the right thing to do, having a healthy sense of humor, and [[DysfunctionJunction just by virtue of being stable, a functioning member of society, and not having some kind of]] DarkAndTroubledPast aside from that thing about his childhood friend turning evil. Most importantly, however, he’s very trusting, is willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, and is kind even to most of his enemies.
** [[RedOniBlueOni Kylo and Hux.]] The former is extremely powerful, fights in a small unit but can perform as a OneManArmy, but most of all is incredibly troubled, conflicted, and unstable. He had parents and family who loved and still love him, but due to intervention in his life beyond his control and his own personality flaws what should have been a happy life was corrupted, and he has a very twisted view of how his family see him, but even then, despite believing it’s his destiny and the inherent addictive properties of the Dark Side, he can’t bring himself to fully hate his loved ones and give himself to the dark. This leads to frustration as he sees them as what is binding him to the light. Meanwhile, Hux is a normal human in terms of physical power, but is the actual military leader out of the two, a ManipulativeBastard in his own right, calm, cold-blooded, and confident. He ''was'' abused by his father, but yet it’s ambiguous wether Hux killed him because of that, because he’s inherently a psychopath who saw doing so as a means to an end, or some mix of both; still, he seemingly is completely unaffected emotionally by the abuse aside from adopting his father’s demeanor and teachings, even mocking Kylo by telling him that he got over it “like an adult”. And despite not having the Force and the lack of a curse, he was way more accepting of evil.
* FoodAsBribe: Poe convinces Rey to help them by promising a meal once they reach their destination.

The First Order, a terrorist cell made up of imperial remnants, has suddenly risen in the past few years, expanding and growing powerful at alarming speed. Jedi Master Luke Skywalker has gone off the map for half a decade in search of something unknown, taking what remains of the Jedi order after the Second Jedi Massacre perpetrated by one Kylo Ren and his Knights of Ren. Senator Leia Organa-Solo and the rest of the new government tries keeping the somewhat weakened, but still strong Republic together in these hard times. For the other characters, this will also be assuming “Elsa Ren” (Kylo [[spoiler:is the way he is because of a Dark Side curse, and grew up fearful of his destructive potential and tumultuous emotions]]), “Senator Organa” (Leia is a Senator) routes, and that Poe and Ben were childhood friends or at least knew each other growing up. Many don’t have as drastic a difference between character directions, but they’re still noticeable (e.g. Luke can be anywhere from “Space Mr. Rogers” to “idealistic but a bit jaded”, Hux can be anywhere from “Why do I have to deal with this idiot” to “stoic and visibly gives no flips” to “mask of ice, hidden [[WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender Azula]]”, I’m not completely sure exactly how snarky Poe is). I will try to label them but that may become pretty messy, and some are rather minor, even if they do affect the larger picture of the character (e.g. whether Hux is afraid of Kylo or can easily manipulate him, though I’m becoming partial to the latter, whether Finn was an Elite Trooper or just a private, Han’s occupation).

(Note: I do want to write a fanfic or screenplay sometime. The parts with the IRL actors are obviously pipe dream. Mostly.)

** Poe was apparently a teen prodigy because he was 17 when he became a Captain and got his promotion into Commander when he was 21. While this may have been less of an oddity in the Rebellion, and the Republic Armed Forces does have a slightly younger structure due to the youth of the nation, it is also a much more conventional military than the Rebellion and as such Poe’s age especially stands out in-universe, even if it’s sort of justified by his upbringing.
** Hux is likewise disproportionately young among his peers, even if he’s aged up slightly (36 instead of 34), and becomes an officer when he’s 16 and becomes a Grand Admiral at 18. Oh, and part of the reason he got the promotion to officer so early was that he [[KingonPromotion murdered his own father in cold blood]] and hid the evidence so no one could find it was him. [[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior When he was 15]]. * TheAtoner: Ben in post-''Rebirth'' content. He’s understandably an extremely controversial person in the postwar Republic despite begrudging acceptance of amnesty being granted by the major heroes of the literal war to save the galaxy as everyone knew it, and lives quietly mostly outside the public eye, helping in small ways he can while Luke works on defusing him.
**
* MoodWhiplash: In the 4-part compilation "25 ABY", following a normal day in the life of the main four from the same year before the events of the sequel remakes, Rey's ficlet is a short but bitter record of a desperate 10-year-old girl's attempts to survive in a hostile, uncaring planet and her growing misanthropy, Finn's is a bleak, depressing peek into the emotionally stunting life of a [[ChildSoldiers 14-year-old First Order trooper in training]] that is a cross between a Literature/NineteenEightyFour-esque dystopia novel and WarIsHell, both featuring rampant TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior and an oppressive depressing tone (especially Finn’s), and Ben's is borderline if not outright psychological horror about the late-stage psychological torment of a mentally ill 18-year-old boy from said boy’s warped, self-loathing perspective. ...And then sandwiched between Finn and Ben there’s Poe's, showing a day in the life of a young early-20s Republic Armed Forces Major anticipating his promotion, and his cute interactions with BB-8, his colleagues, Han, and Leia, cooking, messing around, showing off his flying and being an older brother figure to recruits, and by far having the most normal life out of the four, even if there is the tense backdrop of preparing for another potential war. This is also generally the case for the other stories that follow, being mostly cheerful or action-oriented, and while Poe still does have some darker stories (e.g. mourning falling comrades), they are pretty few and nothing compared to how bleak the others can get at their worst, the exceptions being one or two he shares with Ben.

* LighterAndSofter: A good part of supplementary material is the characters interacting that wouldn’t fit in the movie format. If the focus is the First Order it’s usually not, but if it isn’t it tends to be fluff.

It is also quite possibly the cover most representative of this version of Old Luke’s (or really just Luke as a Jedi’s, with the Young Luke cover being to obscure “when” the song is supposed to be in addition to the meta symbolic meaning) worldview outside of anything involving official music. The result is a TearJerker, especially with the tuning style, but also with the original heartwarming-ness put back in.

** An example of TropesAreNotBad, as her being overpowered was a common complaint against the sequels; as mentioned above, Rey is hardly as powerful as she is in canon, especially initially. She is able to hold her own with a staff and is pretty resourceful (especially Cynical Rey)/knows some fighting skills with a staff (Fangirl Rey)/is pretty skilled with a lightsaber all things considered (Padawan Rey), but she still gets her butt kicked a lot, even almost as much as Luke did in the original trilogy. * AmbiguousDisorder: Kylo Ren/Ben Solo's dialogue, how he’s described, and demeanor invokes him having some kind of mental illness or personality disorder; not helping especially is his childish personality, with his emotional maturity often seeming to be that of a teenager, but sometimes regressing to the point that he acts like an actual child, and especially his extreme emotional dependence on people and ideals. Granted, this was made much worse by the curse, but ''Legacy'' reveals that he had always had some emotional issues, and while they only became really severe as Snoke’s curse started to sink in further, it seems to have just exacerbated problems that were already there. The closest seems to be borderline personality disorder possibly comorbid with Anxiety, possibly even dependent personality disorder, but it is of course never explicitly stated. However, the author does say that when approaching his turn to the light she took at least some inspiration from mental health recommendations, and Luke’s training methods after his studies on Ach-To are heavily influenced by techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

[[labelnote:example]](Cynical Rey) describes the scenario where Rey keeps her canon backstory to, and is the explicit main hero, (Fangirl Rey) describes the scenario where Rey is an AudienceSurrogate AscendedFangirl who adores the tales of heroism of the Rebellion and especially the original trio, (Dark Rey) describes a scenario where she turns at some point in the story.[[/labelnote]]I hope I can find out how to sort my many scenarios.

As of now the route where Cynical Rey is a Skywalker by blood and doesn't turn is the one I’m most partial to, especially in Jedi!Finn routes, so these tropes will assume this is the Cynical Rey Skywalker scenario for now, unless otherwise specified. While this reveal would be spoilered usually, here it isn't for obvious reasons. This will also be assuming Finn is the second main character.

I will try to label them but that may become pretty messy, and some are rather minor, even if they do affect the larger picture a lot (e.g. whether Hux is afraid of Kylo or can easily manipulate him, though I’m becoming partial to the latter, whether Finn was an Elite Trooper or just a private).

** Finn in canon was rather cowardly. Here the fact that he's a former soldier is very clear from the start, and he was in fact part of an elite squadron, not a janitor.

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Though more an example of CharacterRerailment, Luke Skywalker. While in ''The Last Jedi'' he had become a GrumpyOldMan due to events occurring before the movie, in this trilogy he's still optimistic (if maybe kind of jaded and unsure of himself) and idealistic as had been in the original trilogy. The writer even describes him as "a cuddly old man" and “Kind of a Superpowered [[Series/MisterRogersNeighborhood Mr. Rogers]]”.

%%** Luke especially is retooled to be a very good example of this and OldMaster. He’s a seemingly laid-back, innocuous, even cuddly-looking grandpa of a man who still has kept his optimism all these years, even if he has grown a bit jaded (Jaded Luke or “Iroh Luke”). The author reportedly based him heavily off of [[WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender Uncle Iroh]] ("Iroh Luke"). He’s also still pretty in touch with his younger side, e.g. eagerly urging Rey to try chocolate blue milk despite how weird it looks, tickling her mid-meditation and breaking out into laughter as Rey gets annoyed at him about it, jokingly sulking about Han still calling him “Kid”, and imitating his old mentors’ voices while quoting them. He even seems to have become a bit of a FriendToAllLivingThings, seemingly having befriended and being able to hold conversation with the Porgs, and Rey (Fangirl) compares him to one. (“Pure Luke”)
* CustomUniform: Han wears his uniform jacket as a CoatCape, complete with hanging sleeves. Shonengirl has admitted that she was probably influenced by anime a bit, like she was in other aspects. (Admiral Solo)

* HatesBeingTouched: Rey, much like canon, understandably. She gradually loses this as the trilogy goes on, and by the end she's [[spoiler:fighting with Finn hand-in-hand, and is the first to outstretch her hand to Kylo along with Finn to accept him back before Luke pulls all of them into a group hug]].
* TheHeart: Poe Dameron is more of a supporting character compared to the main duo, and is the least dynamic. However, among the main characters (independent of his squad) he is the one who keeps the trio emotionally grounded and on the path, keeps spirits up with his laid-back, joking attitude, is the least socially incompetent and the most “normal” of the group, and is described by shonengirl as the “CoolBigBro” and this exact trope. Without him, the trio would probably fall apart. He also in a way serves as the OnlySaneMan due to him being the most down-to-earth.

Kylo takes the reveal to him that Rey is his cousin with... mixed feelings about it.

* OnlySaneMan: Downplayed. Poe, though not in the typical way, as he's less the serious straight man, and more the most normal guy; a laid-back, wisecracking, well-adjusted, established member of society who loves his droid and sort-of parental figures, sharing an adventuring party with a somewhat misanthropic, traumatized former scavenger and an emotionally stunted ex-soldier. This is especially the case if one includes Kylo, who is downright mentally unstable, in the mix. He even jokes that "I guess I'm the resident normal one here!". He's also the only one in the big four who has any social skills until at least partway through ''Legacy''. The effect is balanced by the presence of the original trilogy cast, however.
* PsychopathicManchild: Unlike Vader, Kylo Ren has not changed much from his base personality, and the Dark Side has only served to heighten his emotions to turn him into the volatile berserker he is now. While aged down somewhat, he's still a (at the beginning) 26 year old giant of a man with the emotional maturity of a 15-year-old at oldest (if that) who throws destructive tantrums when things don't go his way, literally storms back to his room to cry a few times, has serious daddy and mommy issues, is easily manipulated, has a tendency to be slavishly loyal and short-sighted, is obviously painfully insecure despite trying to hide it, and shrinks like a puppy when Snoke scolds or berates him. Though not that anyone in the First Order except Snoke dares to say it because they're all terrified of him, as no one who has defied him has come out alive.

* AdaptationalJerkass: Rey, initially (Cynical Rey). When Finn and Poe first meet her, she's incredibly distrustful, cynical, uncooperative, and brutally practical, like ''A New Hope'' Han Solo without the bravado, just trying to survive. In fact, she's encountered trying to outright sell BB-8. However, considering how she grew up, her worldview is perfectly understandable. By the end, she develops to more resemble her caring, nice, even cheerful canonical counterpart.

* MoodWhiplash: In the 4-part compilation "25 ABY", following a normal day in the life of the main four from the same year before the events of the sequel remakes, Rey's ficlet is a short but bitter record of a desperate 10-year-old girl's attempts to survive in a hostile, uncaring planet and her growing misanthropy, Finn's is a bleak, depressing peek into the emotionally stunting life of a [[ChildSoldiers 14-year-old First Order trooper]] that is a cross between a Literature/NineteenEightyFour-esque dystopia novel and WarIsHell, both featuring rampant TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior and an oppressive depressing tone (especially Finn’s), and Ben's is borderline if not outright psychological horror about the late-stage psychological torment of a mentally ill 18-year-old boy from said boy’s warped, self-loathing perspective. ...And then sandwiched between Finn and Ben there’s Poe's, showing a day in the life of a young early-20s Republic Armed Forces Major anticipating his promotion, and his cute interactions with BB-8, his colleagues, Han, and Leia, cooking, messing around, showing off his flying and being an older brother figure to recruits, and by far having the most normal life out of the four, even if there is the tense backdrop of preparing for another potential war. While expected due to the whole crux of Poe’s character being that he’s the normal, well-adjusted one, the sheer difference can still be pretty intense. The darkest place the fic goes or even flirts with is when Ben is mentioned by Han and Leia and Poe suspects that something is up with him (pending), and vague mentions of how costly the war could be. This is also generally the case for the other stories that follow, being mostly cheerful or action-oriented, and while Poe still does have some darker stories (e.g. mourning falling comrades, a few he shares with Ben), they are pretty few and nothing compared to how bleak the others can get at their worst, or the darker stuff is in the background but never at the forefront.

The setup of the story is somewhat similar, but different; it has once again been over 30 years since the end of Film/ReturnOfTheJedi. The First Order, a terrorist cell made up of imperial remnants, has suddenly risen in the past few years, expanding and growing powerful at alarming speed. Luke Skywalker has gone off the map for half a decade in search of something unknown, leaving his sister, now Jedi Knight Leia Organa-Solo, to lead what remains of his Neo-Jedi Order after the Second Jedi Massacre by Kylo Ren, in the somewhat weakened, but still strong Republic, as she and the new government tries keeping it together in these hard times. Now, they are about to cross paths with a new generation of heroes...

The above first face-off between him, Rey and Finn is replaced with a very tense chase scene of [[TheBerserker an enraged Kylo]] hounding Rey and Finn through the snow, the trees chopped from his blade falling and threatening to crush them, all the while [[OhCrap and all they can do is run]].run]] as trees are falling and lightning crackles around them, shockwaves threatening to knock them off their feet. It ends with a short, desperate lightsaber duel where Kylo clearly has the upper hand on both Finn and Rey, Kylo mercilessly barraging them in a flurry of strikes, which Rey is just barely able to parry with her nonexistent knowledge of what she's doing until [[spoiler:within seconds he succeeds in ''[[OnceAnEpisode cutting her hand off]]'', making her let out an absolutely bloodcurdling scream and sending the lightsaber flying with her hand]] (pending), and she and Finn are only saved by [[spoiler:[[BigDamnHeroes Luke coming to save them just in time]]. (pending) If he becomes really distressed, he can even cause small scale explosions or surround himself in a chaotic Force Storm complete with lightning. (pending) And to make it worse, he is barely in control of these powers, this combination of raw power and emotional instability making him absolutely terrifying yet pitiful.
** Captain Phasma had one rather brief fight scene in the canon trilogy, which she lost, and before that made her debut with Finn and Han forcing her to unlock Starkiller Base’s shields. In this trilogy, she's a terrifying, imposing, almost imposing [[ImplacableMan Implacable Woman]] who almost kills Finn in their first face-off, and [[TheDreaded the mere mention of her name is enough to make him freeze]].

This is such a deep-seated issue in his psychology that when he wanted to break away from it, the only way out he could see was to jump headlong into the arms of yet another one. But unlike most examples, his family actively tried to support him, reassuring him that they loved him just the way he was, and Luke especially told him constantly that everyone developed and came to terms with their dark side at their own pace, doing his best to give Ben the space and affection he needed. It was just that Snoke saw to him doubting these words, convincing him that they were lying, breaking down his self-esteem that he became increasingly desperate to overturn an imagined disappointment.

** Captain Phasma had one rather brief fight scene in the canon trilogy, both of which she lost. In this trilogy, she's a terrifying, imposing, almost [[ImplacableMan Implacable Woman]] who almost kills Finn in their first face-off .
** In terms of attitude, Hux is way more threatening, dignified, and in control than his canon counterpart, and is way more respected by those under him, to contrast him with the childish Kylo Ren, and he even comes across as an OnlySaneMan. He's an incredibly effective tactician, an expert manipulator who can even push Kylo's buttons without getting chopped into pieces, and sometimes seems borderline sociopathic in his pragmatic ruthlessness.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Rey, initially (Cynical Rey). When Finn first meets her, she's incredibly distrustful, cynical, uncooperative, and brutally practical, like ''A New Hope'' Han Solo without the bravado, just trying to survive. In fact, she's encountered trying to outright sell BB-8. However, considering how she grew up, her worldview is perfectly understandable. By the end, she develops to more resemble her caring, nice, even cheerful canonical counterpart.

** An example of TropesAreNotBad, as her being overpowered was a common complaint against the sequels; as mentioned above, Rey is hardly as powerful as she is in canon, particularly initially. Even by the end, she has far fewer abilities than her canon version had by the end, and she had to train for all five years from the start of ''Legacy'' to the beginning of ''Rebirth'' to earn them, whereas canon Rey only had one year.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Though more an example of CharacterRerailment, Luke Skywalker. While in ''The Last Jedi'' he had infamously become a GrumpyOldMan, in this trilogy he's still optimistic (if maybe kind of jaded and unsure of himself) and idealistic as had been in the original trilogy. The writer even describes him as "a cuddly old man".
* AmbiguousDisorder: Kylo Ren/Ben Solo's dialogue, how he’s described, and demeanor invokes him having some kind of mental illness or personality disorder; not helping especially is his childish personality, with his emotional maturity often seeming to be that of a teenager, but sometimes regressing to the point that he acts like an actual child, and he by default has an extreme emotional dependence on people and ideals. Granted, this was made much worse by the curse, but ''Legacy'' reveals that he had always had some emotional issues, and while they only became really severe as Snoke’s curse started to sink in further, it seems to have just exacerbated problems that were already there. The closest seem to be anxiety or borderline personality disorder, possibly even dependent personality disorder, but it is of course never explicitly stated.

* TheAtoner: Ben in post-''Rebirth'' content. He’s understandably an extremely controversial person in the postwar Republic despite begrudging acceptance of his amnesty by all the major heroes of the literal war to save the galaxy as everyone knew it, and lives quietly mostly outside the public eye, helping in small ways he can while Luke works on defusing him.
* MoodWhiplash: In the 4-part compilation "25 ABY", following a normal day in the life of the main four from the same year before the events of the sequel remakes; Rey's ficlet is a short but bitter record of a desperate 10-year-old girl's attempts to survive in a hostile, uncaring planet and her growing misanthropy, Finn's is a bleak, depressing peek into the emotionally stunting life of a [[ChildSoldiers 14-year-old First Order trooper]] that is a cross between a Literature/NineteenEightyFour-esque dystopia novel and WarIsHell, both featuring rampant TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior and an oppressive depressing tone (especially Finn’s), and Ben's is borderline if not outright psychological horror about the late-stage psychological torment of a mentally ill 18-year-old boy from said boy’s warped, self-loathing perspective. ...And then sandwiched between Finn and Ben there’s Poe's, showing a day in the life of a young early-20s Republic Major anticipating his promotion, and his cute interactions with BB-8, his colleagues, Han, and Leia, cooking, messing around, showing off his flying and being an older brother figure to recruits, and by far having the most normal life out of the four, even if there is the tense backdrop of preparing for another potential war. While expected due to the whole crux of Poe’s character is that he’s the “normal”, well-adjusted, LighterAndSofter one, the sheer difference can still be pretty intense.
%%while some of Ben's ficlets can be extremely wholesome, a lot of them are incredibly dark and can be straight up psychological horror as the poor child is slowly tortured and gaslit throughout childhood and adolescence (not to mention even the above lighthearted ones tend to have a strong bitter taste of dramatic irony in them).

While expected due to the whole crux of Poe’s character is that he’s the “normal”, well-adjusted, LighterAndSofter one, the sheer difference can still be pretty intense. The darkest place the fic goes or even flirts with is when Ben is mentioned by Han and Leia and Poe suspects that something is up with him (pending), and vague mentions of how costly the war could be. Going from Finn's to Poe's to Ben's can induce some strong whiplash even if it is expected due to the type of character Poe is. This is also generally the case for the other stories that follow, being mostly cheerful or action-oriented, and while Poe still does have some darker stories (e.g. mourning falling comrades, a few he shares with Ben), they can barely be counted on one hand are pretty few and are nothing compared to how bleak the others can get at their worst.
