* All Love is Unrequited: Vittoria is head over heels for Moe, but the guy could honestly care less for her.
* Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: For how much the ensemble cast act as a constant nuisance towards each other, there are a couple of folks in the series who generally have great friendships. This includes Moe and Jeri, Cacao and Dolores, and Vitoria and Pelagatti.

* ADayInTheLimelight: Happens all the time.
** A duo of background tenants get a plotline where they're revealed as secret agents.
** The flophouse landlord.
** Vitoria's younger sister Gemella.

* Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: For how much the ensemble cast act as a constant nuisance towards each other, there are a couple of folks in the series who generally have good friendships. This includes Moe and Jeri, Cacao and Dolores, Namazio and Pelagatti, Gemella and Lupo, and all of the tenants.
* Berkserk Button: These guys aren't all that well-known for their sweet tempers.
** A mere mention of the name "Moe Dunlop" is enough to send Pelagatti into a murderous rampage.
** Insult Grimaldo's religion at your own risk.
* Beware the Nice Ones: While Jeri and Vittoria seem to be friendly young women, they definitely have an unhinged side to them.
* Big Eater: The Fettuccine family, big time. They are so gluttonous that they get into highly choreographed battles for food, frequently pilfer the tenants of their pantry, and are a threat to restaurants everywhere.
* Big Fancy House: Continuing from the previous trope, the Fettuccine estate. Complete with tacky interior design and numerous booby traps.
* Bolivian Army Ending: For some brief context, the final chapter has Moe faking his own death so that he can finally escape from all of his everyday craziness for once. Needless to say, the rest of the characters don't take this news too well. But due to half-assing it, Moe is caught by everyone who are rightfully hysterical and proceed to chase him down the street. And that't the ending.
* Butt-Monkey: By all means Jeri, but to be fair a majority of the cast applies in one way or another. Honestly, the only character who never suffer from the antics is Stella.
* Charles Atlas Superpower: Both von Whiz Jeri, given their considerable strength and durability to survive countless pummelings and physical trauma without as much as a scratch. Even gets lampshaded a couple of episodes.
* Running Gag: There are plenty of them.
** Moe's affinity of bathrobes and milkshakes.
** Jeri's mood swings from a Nice Girl to a Large Ham.
** Warble's monotone disposition and sudden appearances.
** The Fettuccine's gluttony.
** Odenblom's obnoxious laugh.
** Byron's blackmailing schemes.
** Grimaldo being a pathetic loser.
** von Whiz's clumsiness and obliviousness.
** Dolores' constant tidying.
* "Shaggy Dog" Story: Many chapters spiral further and further out of control, oftentimes with nothing ever getting resolved in the end. Even so, by the next chapter everything will be back to normal.

The work that launched the career of writer and illustrator Gavin Nowak, Gumshoe is an comedy series that borders between being a quirky sitcom and a surrealist bizarro. It is incredibly loose in both continuity and actual plot, almost always taking the episodic formula. Don't be fooled, though. There is plenty of weird madness crammed into such a short amount of time.

The series centers around Moe Dunlop and Jeri Sfortunata, a pair of seemingly ordinary private detectives that prove to be some of the laziest and unlucky people on the face of the earth. Rarely does Moe do his job, as he often prefers to sit around in a bathrobe and drink milkshakes all day. Unfortunately, he is surrounded by an eclectic cast of obnoxious characters, most of whom either want to kill, pursue, or pester our leads at any given moment. While generally lacking much of a clear narrative, one thing is always certain: the city of Calgary has become a magnet for outlandish incidents involving their neighbors, and Moe is bound to be stuck in the middle.

Unlike most Unlucky Everydude protagonists who tend to be get involved in the conflict, Moe is an unrepentant layabout, and generally his singular motivation is that he can continue slacking off, seeing his neighbors pretty much only as hindrances to his slothful pursuits. Even despite this, he gets quite a few Pet the Dog moments.

* The '70s: The aesthetic and pastiches of the show greatly calls back to this particular decade.

* "Shaggy Dog" Story: Many chapters spiral further and further out of control, oftentimes with nothing ever getting resolved in the end. Even so, by the next chapter everything will be back to normal.

While Nowak's other series O Walzer fuer die Luftwaffe and Ivanco No Goto are plays on the Slice of Life and Chop Sockey/Film Noir genres respectively, Gumshoe is a melting pot of a wide assortment of satires, mostly of 1970s pulp fiction and grindhouse cinema, all wrapped up in a Gag Series package. The combination of its unique, fast-paced humor and its unusual plots make for quite the memorable read.
