!Characters

-> The KnightTemplar VillainProtagonist. He is a loner demon hunter, out to eliminate his half-sisters for being half-breeds. Though, as a demon hunter, his eyes are attracted by the Majin menace and he goes to eradicate those, but he feels more negative forces than the Majins, and therefore investigates the tournament on his own.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: Sometimes.
* BadassFamily: His bloodline has inherited wind affinity and teaches the secret Primitive Magics of Destruction and Creation.
** BigScrewedUpFamily: When the last leader died without a fixed heir to the leadership, the clan degenerated into civil war and died out in less than two weeks.
** TheFamilyThatSlaysTogether: Even though the missions were IWorkAlone solo, the family formed mostly assassins.
* BlackSheep: His job is to slay those, mainly the half-breeds.
* BlowYouAway: His elemental affinity. His S (Shot) attacks move the enemy around using the wind rather than hitting.
* ChildProdigy: Was already a hierarchical superior to his parents at age 11.
** TeenGenius: He killed the rest of his family at age 16-17.
* FinalBoss: He is this for Kyoku, Junichi, Saki and Nii.
* IWorkAlone: After joining the Yosseidan in Edo, he continued his travelling, never to set foot in Edo again.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: He considers himself normal, hinting all of his family to be like him.
* KnightTemplar: He sticks to the code of his family to the letter.
* LightIsNotGood: He wears mostly white and uses light magic along with wind. But he is an assassin, and intent on doing his job of murdering his two half-sisters, who are presumably perfectly normal.
* MeaningfulName: DoubleSubversion: His name means good intent, and even though he is an evil Jerkass, he still thinks he's doing good.
* PoweredByAForsakenChild: Inverted. His sword is rusty because when he tried to absorb his sister's lifeforce into the sword to empower its wind ability, her natural affinity (which was water and not wind) rotted the metal of the weapon. Despite the nigh-unusability of the weapon, Yoi still uses it as its bloody smell reminds him of his mission.
* PowerOfTheVoid: He learned the Primitive Magic of Destruction at the Seirinkyokai back in his youth. His Scorching Attack essentially disintegrates the opponent.
* RazorWind: His Senpuuken is a short-ranged tornado of RazorWind.
* SelfMadeOrphan: He killed his parents at age 13.
* TheStoic
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: With the Yosseidan as a whole.

-> Kyoku is a professional fighter turned demon hunter, who grew bored of even this and gave himself handicaps, such as breaking his own leg before a fight. Though, during a travel in Hokkaido, he lost a fight and was ready to die; but Yoi killed the thing from behind before it could deal the finishing blow. Kyoku left in shame, waiting to restore himself before taking his revenge with full strength.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy
* BigScrewedUpFamily: His sister Shini is a pariah, and Kyoku is known to get along with only his adopted sister Genkai. The Hajiros are known to be prone to quarrelling much more than the bloodlines used to, making them not much a threat to the Jiyubudoka.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Having fought for so long, he judges people by their power.
* DemonHunting: Has done this for a while.
* FinalBoss: To Noriaki.
* HairTriggerTemper: Regarding his revenge. Also, he hates formalities.
* HandicappedBadass: He invoked it, by breaking his own leg before going to defeat Majins. Though, it wound up bad when he tried to hunt stronger demons.
* ItsPersonal: With Yoi, because he wound his pride.
* IWorkAlone: Mostly. He still cooperates with Itami for their mutual interest but the two of them are mostly on their own.
* PetTheDog: Subverted in his arcade, against Shini. Sure, he doesn't want her to get killed, but only for the family's credibility.
* Pride: Wants to get his back by beating Yoi.
* SmugSuper: Basically, he's known as the WorldsStrongestMan. No doubt he's arrogant, with very good reasons.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Some characters note that he has eaten Majins, and hinted that assimilating too many of them could result in DemonicPossession.
* TechnicolorFire: Black flames.
* UnknownRival: Is this to Yoi, who didn't even see him when he saved him.
* YearsTooEarly: Treats Shini as this.

-> An Edo-born prodigy, her intellect led to her being unemotional, and her animosity for her family (one who wanted to rise as a grand bloodline) made her throw her life aside to learn karate outside. She founded the Yosseidan, a demon-hunting group, after graduating from her karate school, her magic school and normal school. She then disappeared in her own organization's shadow to avoid fighting Itami when she returned. Though, since she cannot live like that forever, she takes Itami's challenge.
* AloofAlly: Yoi is this to her.
* FinalBoss: She and Itami are this to each other.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: She poses as this, but in truth she's just one more symbol of human egoism in the series.
* ItsPersonal: She's trying to defy the trope: Itami and her have been extremely bitter rivals for a long while, but Rin is trying to push her mentality behind killing Itami towards her responsabilities as a demon hunter rather than killing her for personal purposes.
* JustBusiness: The mask for her reasons to be here.
* KnightTemplar: Of sorts. Like Yoi, she would kill all sorts of demons, even figurative. One of her inner demons is the existence of her twin sister Itami.
* MakingASplash: Her main element is water.
* TeenGenius: She's 16.

-> A child born from a bloodline that decimated itself in a civil war caused by Jiyubudoka pressure. He became an errant thief, and stole from the biggest riches around. With the money he stole, he funded the building of an orphanage where he housed Saki, whom he found on a road. Famed for his ability as a thief, plans spring to stop him, and his increasing addiction to stealing proves to be more and more problematic over time as his plunderings become more and more difficult to hide.
* BlowYouAway: Has a blood-inherited wind affinity.
* FriendToAllChildren: Why else would a robber go out of his way to build an orphanage?
* Hypocrite: Calls the Jiyubudoka this.
* IneffectualLoner: Averted. He managed to loot every single target of his, and this while acting all alone.
* JustLikeRobinHood: His activity, and how he built an orphanage. Though, he struggles against Greed an addiction to stealing money, and failing at it.
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: Not so much loner as he hangs out with Saki at times; but he's definitely mistaken as a serial egoistical robber despite actually funding an orphanage.
* SpinningPiledriver: His Senpuujin Riki.

-> Rin's twin sister, with a fire affinity. She's also the RedOni to her sister's blue, and she's been calling out the clan on everything she could since she was conscious. She was kicked out of the house at age 13 when the situation couldn't get worse. She then got into dirty work in assassinating for the Yakuza, and later killed her own boss to take command and grab easy life. She challenged Rin publicly several times and had henchmen look all over Edo for her. She finds out about the Majins in Kyoto, and heads there sure of Rin's presence.
* ChainPain: Wields a kusarigama, combining this and SinisterScythe.
* FinalBoss: She and Rin are this to each other.
* HiddenDepths: She's a murderously violent and hateful Yakuza. She still cares for Kyoku and knows light magic well enough to notice that he is assimilating Majins, and she's ready to exorcise the demons off of him in case Kyoku goes out of control.
* KillEmAll: Averted. She renounced to kill her family out of hatred, but she still is out for Rin's head.
* MoralityChain: Oddly enough, Kyoku is hers.
* ThePowerOfHate: She believes intense hatred gives power... like she knew the game mechanics.
* Self-Made Woman: Somewhat. Having been disinherited and kicked out at age 13, she had lost everything. She resurfaced two years later as her family and especially Rin's ArchEnemy.
* Yakuza: Works with them since she was kicked out of her home at age 13.

-> A rich heir to a bunch of activities in Sapporo, he is one of the richest persons in all Hokkaido. He has successful business even down in Edo. He founded the Kinma gang to attack fund conveys from his rivals and acquire even more money, but they got razed while he was away. Junichi takes upon himself to take revenge.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: A feudal-Japanese version.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Story-wise. He is rather goofy and weak for showing up at a tournament with the fate of a Japan supposedly hanging in the balance. He still is the single S-Rank threat to the Jiyubudoka because he has a personal militia and could control or shut down any backstage action at will.
* Revenge: Against Yoi, for wrecking his "Kinma" gang while he was away on a business trip.

-> Rin and Itami's older sister, she works to become an attorney of sorts. She was concerned when Rin's aloofness and Itami's hostility menaced to consume the family, and tried to put them apart. She agreed to kick Itami out, unaware that this caused her to plot the clan's demise. When the elder sister Kazune died, she tried to fill the vacuum, even though she has difficulty hanging in. She is in charge of the contacts of the future clan, and this resulted in her meeting and making frieds with Junichi. When she hears of Rin and Itami meeting in Kyoto, she goes there to avoid bloodshed.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Thinks this about Rin and Itami. If their battle goes on, she will resort to kill both herself.
* IceQueen
* OddFriendship: With Junichi.
* TheOjou
* Only Sane Woman: Her serious personality makes her this to the other wackier characters. Then again, her sanity erodes progressively as she keeps on fighting.
* StepfordSnarker: Her older sister died, and her two younger sisters are out to kill each other, leaving her with far too much responsibility and despair.
* TheStoic: The face she adopts towards the others.
** DissonantSerenity: When talking to her sisters, especially with Rin.
* TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask: She took Kazune's place as future head of the clan if they ever become one.

-> Yoi's half-sister, they share the same mother. Unlike Yoi, who doesn't pay any regard to her memory, Saki regards her mother extremely highly, and wants revenge on Yoi for having killed her. Her father having committed suicide one year later from chagrin, she's an orphan, and therefore she lived in orphanages. When she travelled to Kyoto, she became the poster girl for Yun's orphanage, where she now lives.
* TheDreaded: Her mother tried to set her up as this for Yoi, even announcing Saki's future coming for his life in her LastWords. She doesn't live up to them, and Yoi doesn't even have the singlest hint of fear for her from the moment he meets her onward.
* IdiotHero: Except not truly TheHero, but still more heroic than any other character, and also a lot dumber and more candid.
* JokeCharacter: Story-wise, she's treated as such, even though she isn't the weakest in the tournament. She doesn't make any apparition in any arcade past stage 4.
* LongLostSibling: She's Yoi's half-sister.
* RevengeBeforeReason: She's getting herself in range fo Majins to kill Yoi.
* "Well Done, Daughter" Girl: She truly wants to act out to her mother's wish

-> A top enforcer of the Jiyubudoka Militia, self-nicknamed "The One Who Defeats Blood" for his ability to defeat people with blood-inherited powers. Since he's from Fukuoka, he enrolled in the Jiyubudoka when their activity was there, at age 6. He's trained ever since, with awesome results. He does his best to bring down "those arrogant aristocratic dimwits", even though he's not actually malicious, just extremely zealous about his "duty as a human being".
* BadassNormal: Much less gifts in magic than others, and no blood-inherited power. Can beat a good part of the cast fair and square. He has already stopped Yosseidan investigation teams - a dozen men trained in magic - all by himself.
* BloodKnight: Truly loves a good fight.
* CodeName: His family name, Hakamuro, has been invented by the Jiyubudoka.
* TheDragon: To Nii, at least for the truly-involved characters. He's actually TheBrute.
* ForGreatJustice: Truly believes he's doing this by virtue of being with the Jiyubudoka, though this fades away with time.
* NobleDemon: Big time. By affirming his presence as a Jiyubudoka and brutally beating several bloodliners to say Lamarck Was NOT Right, he earned himself intense hate from several of the old clans, Yun first. He knows that he's working with some bad guys, but he doesn't really care as long as he gets to tell his motto.
* RedBaron: Introduces himself as "The One Who Defeats Blood" (Chi wo Taosu Mono). Justified in that he's one man able to beat people with blood-inherited powers, but it doesn't really sound cool.
* SkillGateCharacter: Story-wise. He's working as a guard as well as fighting in the tournament, sending people investigating background packing... most of them.
* SpiritedCompetitor

-> Chief of the Jiyubudoka Militia, Nii has been in the Jiyubudoka since his younger age. Only he knows of his past, but his malicious zeal in destroying the bloodlines knows almost no bounds. In fact, his presence here is due to the fact that a tournament under Majin menace could draw attention from people from disappeared bloodlines. He intends to KillEmAll. He's the BigBad.
* TheChessmaster: Plays this role. He baited Yun in too by promising a huge money reward, and getting everyone scared of Majins will take everyone's attention out of his personal plans.
* CodeName: His real name is unknown.
* TheDragon: He's this to the Jiyubudoka leader who organized the tournament.
** DragonWithAnAgenda: It's obvious that his motives are his only.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Usually talks politely, but isn't above death threats or things alike.
* FinalBoss: To Yoi, Yun and Asuka.
* ManipulativeBastard: Though the idea behind him is that of a MagnificentBastard, it's much too early for him to get coined as one.
** For his defense, he still utterly manipulated his own faction by having the tournament organized in a danger zone: so nobody's eyes would be on him while he reaps the benefits of his BatmanGambit predictions. His goal is fixed as well, though mysterious, and his determination in accomplishing it have no equal. Also, he remains polite (though he looks like he's looking down to everyone) in all circumstances, something even Asuka fails to do.
** Against him, his relentless dog-kicking and ChronicBackstabbingDisorder, and sometimes pointless cruelty and BadBoss habits. Also, his absence of contingency plans that don't involve him beating the tar out of someone count.

-> Kyoku's pariah little sister. Despite having been trained much like any member of her clan, she went out for her own benefits. Her refusal to use her money for the clan soon devolved into generalized egocentric demeanor and narcissism, as she - after Kyoku quitted the fighting competition - won many many fighting tournaments. Out for her own gain, she sowed discord in the clan so she could discretely plunder money from the clan's treasure. This earned her ire from the clan due to the justified suspicions that she's stealing.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Shini has no friends because she just lives to grab an easy life.
* ConsummateLiar: One reason she isn't trusted at all by anyone.
* ElementalPowers: Uses fire and water, leading to the vapor and mist that hints at her sneaky nature.
* Greed: Really obvious.
* PowerCopying: To the point that her Hatred Heat Attack uses Kyokus Shot Type and not hers.
* WeakButSkilled: Relatively to Kyoku, who uses overpowering but simple attacks, Shini is only normally strong physically, but is much more diverse in her moves.

folder:Yasuke Hibi /

* DishingOutDirt: He draws some of his power from the earth.
* GroundPound: His SignatureMove, Kazanken.

* ParentalAbandonment: He is looking for his father for about one year.

* AttackReflector: His Kokumagan special.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu
* ElementalPunch: His Metsuretsuken special is a darkness-infused punch.
* JackOfAllStats: Veering into MightyGlacier, but he's not so slow. He just hits real hard.
* MeteorMove: If you hit all the moves in his Metsuretsuken chain, the Gedan Zangeri special launches the opponent just so Juuma's Hizanken makes a Type A and hits his opponent down to the ground.
* NamesTheSame: Both his Hatred Heat Attacks are named Koumajin. Though, one means "Crimson Demon Blade" and the other means "Mad Demon Man".
* Shoryuken: His Yamaken special is in fact a Shoryureppa, made special move.
* ShotoClone: His shots actually are projectiles that never fizzle, and he has an uppercut move. EX Juuma also gains the Boumazuki, which is a quick fireball, despite losing Shoryuken Yamaken.
* ShoutOut: His Scorching Attack is the Shun Goku Satsu.
* SNKBoss: Planned as such, especially when fought while Frenzied as the TrueFinalBoss.
* UnstableEquilibrium: If Boumazuki connects, you are marked for a while, which means that if he performs the move again while you're marked, his shots or another Boumazuki make a sure-hit. Being marked is a menace at all times, even though hitting a marked opponent this way results in the mark dissapearing.

In a magical feudal Japan, demons called "Majins" have invaded the wilderness and confined humanity to its cities following the downfall of the powerful bloodlines. As Japan is on its way to become HellOnEarth, the Majins are concentrating around Kyoto, threatening to raze the city. The Jiyubudoka are prompted to organize a martial arts tournament to find out about the strongest men in Japan so the Majins can be repelled... or is it for another goal?

FightingGame mechanics are prepared.

!Burning Rhapsody contains examples of:
* ComebackMechanic: The Rage Install.
* DownerEnding: Everyone dies obviously in their normal arcade ending, except Yoi, Kyoku, and Yasuke.
* OneHitKill: The Scorching Attack.
* PlayingWithFire: It isn't called Burning Rhapsody for nothing. Only the Rage Install isn't named after something related to fire.
** The "all-purpose" attack is called the Burn.
** The KnockbackEvasion is called the Backfire.
** There is a FlashStep available for any character, called the Searing Reverse.
** The CounterAttack is named Flare Shield.
** The ComboBreaker is called Defense Blaze.
* ThePowerOfHate: Central to the series. The Super Gauge is called Hatred Gauge, the ComebackMechanic is called Rage Install and is triggered after filling its Rage Gauge. Plus lots of characters hate the others' guts and the goals of half the characters involve killing the object of their hatred.
* SNKBoss: Frenzied Characters. They are the FinalBoss for each arcade and have rather humongous buffs.
** Frenzied Yoi moves and attacks faster. Also, his wind shots hit fullscreen instead of not hitting at all.
** Frenzied Kyoku deals massive damage.
** Frenzied Rin takes less damage.
** Frenzied Yun moves extremely fast and has SuperArmor while moving at extreme speed.
** Frenzied Itami deals more damage, though less than Kyoku.
** Frenzied Junichi's shots slowly home in on the enemy rather than being static.
** Frenzied Asuka deals double stun damage.
** Frenzied Saki attacks faster and has a HealingFactor.
** Frenzied Noriaki takes less damage and is permanently ImmuneToFlinching.
** Frenzied Nii also is ImmuneToFlinching and his shots have inverted pushback, moving the opponent towards him instead of shoving them away.
