* ApocalypseHow: While Earth suffered more of a Class 1, Drageae had a very severe Class 2. In fact, it's said multiple times that the catastrophe that knocked back civilization had never truly ended.
** The veil collapsing would cause an X-5.

* AnyoneCanDie: And will. All of the main characters die. Except Myrna.

* BigLippedAlligatorMoment / RetGone: Often, throughout the noel, there will be events that'll happen and seem to be built up as major plot points, but then a few pages later it's like the never even happened. Such as, the Night of Seven Souls, Arley's death, and Myrna's family. This is later revealed to be the Veil swallowing things, which happens very frequently.

* Adric's whole existence is this.

* AndIMustScream: This is actually subverted with Adric's fate. After an entire dimension collapsing and the only people with a chance of getting off of it dying, he's basically driven insane and [[DrivenToSuicide ends up killing himself multiple times]] just so he could have that amount of time comatose so he didn't have to face the world. Eventually, he ends up stuck like this, until his body basically decays into nothing while he's still alive. The good thing is, he never regains awareness, but he still never dies...
** Although, it is played straight with both Myrna and the Veil Lady. The former, after jumping dimensions and Adric being just a little bit off, ends up caught and detained for crossing over illegally. She ends up locked in a cell that's completely white, and ends up screaming so much she temporarily damages her vocal cords. She's a babbling mess from then on. The latter is stuck in a void, in between two worlds, slowly burning to death. It's said that the ringing people hear in their ears is the sound of her screaming, with no one to hear her.

* HadToComeToPrisonToBeACrook: Aeri is actually an inversion. She was a half-feral murderer before she was sent into the prison, and is now a [[BreakTheCutie broken,]] yet civil person.

* HeroicSacrifice: Myrna pulls one, unintentionally. When the Veil Lady pulled her in to kill Kia, she ceased to exist. She made it out of the veil, but she would have ended up leaching the lifespan of the people around her, so Adric is forced to kill her.

* WhoWantsToLiveForever: Adric has this. In spades. He's lived for 500 years, was killed in a war that was basically unwinnable, and is now forced to live because of this... [[EldritchAbomination thing.]] He's a DeathSeeker, too, and he never even ends up dying, though he never becomes conscious.

Set in the ParallelUniverse to earth, Drageae, there are two separate storylines going on for half of the novel until they meet up. The first, set in the town Carional Downs, which is just starting to reach a level of civilazation, strange things have been happening. People vanishing suddenly without a trace, random lights flashing in the sky, and large gaps in most people's memory. Myrna, a medical student, is just as oblivious to these things as everyone else. And then a man shows up on her street, dead. Minutes later, he's alive. Comatose, but alive.

* ChekhovsGunman: Alv, the guy in the prologue who doesn't get mentioned afterwards? Yes, he shows up again.
