In an amusing coincidence, he was born in the same month as Music/GaryNuman. Ironically, Numan is actually the ''older'' of the two, albeit by only thirteen days.[[note]] Though, to be fair, Gary Oldman is actually his real name, while Numan's surname is actually Webb.[[/note]]

But besides these four, when Oldman isn't the villain, he's just plain crazy. (Ever seen [[LargeHam his guest spot]] on ''Series/{{Friends}}''?) [[ByronicHero And it's not like Sirius doesn't have his moments]]. Despite his obvious villain roles, he can play an excellent MagnificentBastard, though still usually with a patina of dark humour. However, as turkeys like ''WesternAnimation/QuestForCamelot'' and ''Film/TheUnborn'' demonstrate, he also has an unfortunate tendency to [[MoneyDearBoy do anything for money]] ([[Film/RevengeOfTheSith except, of course, when it's a non-union project]]).

His career is seen as a good indicator of how actors have to ''actively pursue'' awards. It took him '''thirty''' years to receive an Oscar nomination (for ''Film/TinkerTailorSoldierSpy''), despite his undeniable talent, and [[DoingItForTheArt it's pretty clear that he just doesn't care about that sort of thing]]. He did finally win in 2018 for playing Winston Churchill in ''Film/{{Darkest Hour|2017}}''.

* MoneyDearBoy: [[invoked]] Oldman took the role of Sirius Black because he desperately needed the work, not having done a film in over a year. This turned out to be a positive version of the trope though as he thoroughly enjoyed making the films and reprised the role throughout the rest of the series, and, combined with Jim Gordon in Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy, served as a CareerResurrection for him.

Shoehorning: the foil is used to refer to contrasting characters In Universe—neither of these properties have anything to do with each other

* {{Foil}}: Oldman's Russian military characters BigBad / TheHeavy character Ivan Korshunov from ''Film/AirForceOne'' and Viktor Reznov from video games ''VideoGame/CallOfDutyWorldAtWar'' and ''VideoGame/CallOfDutyBlackOps'' are this to each other, as both characters being Russian combatants who are {{Large Ham}}s, AxCrazy, {{Blood Knight}}s and {{Sociopathic Soldier}}s, but with Reznov being if Korshunov was a good guy rather than a psychotic bad guy. Interestingly enough, Korshunov was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen originally written to be sympathetic]] before changing to a typical villain as shown on screen, Reznov was basically a more sympathetic and positively portrayed version of Oldman's performance as Ivan refitted for FirstPersonShooter games. To further hit it home, in the ''Black Ops'' level "The Defector," Reznov is seen carrying an M16-derived carbine, which was Korshunov's primary weapon of choice in the film. Also, Reznov being called out by Chernov that "This is not war, this is murder!" which Reznov fires back after executing a begging and unarmed German soldier at the beginning of the ''World at War'' level "Eviction" mirrors a similar moment in the movie where the First Lady said a similar paraphrasing of Chernov's line after Korshunov's killing of the begging and unarmed Melanie Mitchell with Korshunov also verbally firing back. Reznov's narration BookEnds as he tells his story to Alex Mason in the ''Black Ops'' flashback level "Project Nova" mirrors Korshunov's PetTheDog explanation with First Daughter Alice Marshall in the film; Reznov beginning his narration by bringing up his violinist father resembles Korshunov bringing up he is someone's son and having three children himself to Alice.
