He is the third westerner in the documented history of Tae Kwon Do to be given the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt Grand Master, though he is often erroneously credited as the first.

first. Also erroneously, Taekwondo is typically cited as his martial art. Chuck actually first studied Tang Soo Do, making it very popular in the west. He studied several other martial arts, including Taekwondo, later on.

According to {{urban legend}} Norris was the man who taught Bruce Lee how to kick properly. Considering Norris' background in Tae Kwon Do, a notoriously kick-heavy style, and Lee's early training in boxing and Wing Chun, both heavily punch-based, it's not impossible.

He experienced a recent burst popularity which can be linked to two pop-cultural phenomena: First, after the debut of the Chuck Norris lever on ''Late Night With Creator/ConanOBrien'' (which produced a humorous out-of-context clip of ''Walker, Texas Ranger''). Second, after the formulation of the "[[Website/ChuckNorrisFacts Chuck Norris Fact Generator]]" (a spin-off of a similar generator for Creator/VinDiesel), a MemeticMutation wherein facts were given that depicted Norris as [[MemeticBadass an unstoppable force of badassery]], that quickly gained wide popularity. The concept reached AscendedMeme status in a campaign ad for Republican Mike Huckabee. He also [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54NTH5x803Q appears in a commercial]] for ''WorldOfWarcraft'' as part of a series of celebrity endorsements of the show. To a montage of him delivering a CurbStompBattle to enemies, a narrator proudly proclaims "there are ten million people in the world of Warcraft, because Chuck Norris allows them to live!"

In spite his memetic popularity, Chuck has attracted his share of online criticism (primarily from supporters of LGBT rights) stemming from his vocal opposition to *deep breath* [[LongList secularism, gun control, illegal immigration, vaccinations, gay marriage, Barack Obama's presidency, the U.N., and]] [[EspeciallyZoidberg the Gay Eagle Scouts]] [?], among many other GrumpyOldMan tendencies[[note]]e.g. complaining about a pro-gay rally 'forcing their politics' onto others while he himself does pretty much the same thing[[/note]] that make Creator/AdamBaldwin look like [[Creator/CheechAndChong Cheech Marin]]. Anyway, he is a decent bloke if alarmingly reactionary.
