Ok so: again, it seems a little Unfortunate Implications-y that Gillis overshadows so much of this page, which is again, about Yang. Gillis doesn't! He was an incident before 45 and not all that relevant to Bowen Yang now. Similarly to how work pages don't mention What Could Have Been, creator pages don't either. Second, comments about "shining star" are subjective; Audience Reactions should not be in descriptions. Third, "current season" risks being dated. Just as Examples Are Not Recent, we should aim to be fairly timeless with the way we write descriptions.

This, however, was sidelined when news hit that Shane Gillis (a comedian who was supposed to be in the same cast as Yang and Creator/ChloeFineman) had made a lot of racist, sexist, homophobic, and xenophobic remarks on his podcast and online and a lot of people were calling for him to be fired (which happened two weeks prior to Yang's and Fineman's debut as cast members). In spite of this, Bowen Yang became season 45's shining star (at least before the show temporarily shut down due to public health concerns over the coronavirus) and continues to be a scene stealer in his second season (season 46).

Rambly and not really relevant to him! This page is about him and not just SNL trivia.

Yang's inclusion to SNL is somewhat historic, as:

** It's the first time Saturday Night Live has ever had a Chinese-American cast member (coincidentally, Yang was voted in high school most likely to be a Saturday Night Live cast member). However, it's not the first time SNL has had a cast member with heritage from an Asian country, as Creator/RobSchneider (from the early-to-mid-1990s cast) is Filipino on his mother's sideas mentioned on his stand-up special "Soy Sauce and the Holocaust", Creator/FredArmisen (from the early 2000s cast) is a quarter Koreanprior to his appearance on the PBS show "Finding Your Roots", where celebrities discover their ancestry, Armisen -- and a lot of the media -- thought he was Japanese, but the "Finding Your Roots" episode showed that Armisen's paternal grandfather hid his true ethnic identity because Japan annexed South Korea during his youth and posing as Japanese was the only way he could escape discrimination and death, and Creator/NasimPedrad (the show's only Asian female as of 2020) is from Iranwhich, geographically, counts as an Asian country, since The Middle East is part of Asia.
** Yang is also the sixth SNL cast member to be LGBTQ+ (joining Denny Dillon from the 1980-1981 season, Creator/TerrySweeney from the 1985-1986 cast, Danitra Vance from the same cast Creator/TerrySweeney was on, Creator/KateMcKinnon from the 2011-2012 season, and Creator/JohnMilhiser from the 2013-2014 cast), the third one to be an openly gay male, the second one not to be white (joining Creator/DanitraVancewho was a black lesbian), and the first one to be East Asian.
** Yang is also the third cast member born in the 1990s, joining Creator/PeteDavidson and short-lived cast member Luke Null, though Davidson is still the youngest, as he was born in 1993, while Luke Null and Bowen Yang were both born in 1990.
** Yang is also the seventh cast member to not have been born in the United States or Canada, joining Tony Rosato who was born in Italy before his family moved to Canada from season seven, Pamela Stephensonwho was born in New Zealand before becoming an Australian citizen from season ten, Morwenna Bankswho was born in England and, as of 2020, is the only UK-based cast member who was born there, as opposed to having citizenship there, like Mike Myers did from season 20, Horatio Sanzborn in the South American country of Chile from the late 1990s-early 2000s cast, Nasim Pedradborn in Iran from the late 2000s-early 2010s cast, and Creator/SasheerZamatawho is African-American, but was born in Japan because, at the time, her father was an active member of the U.S. Army and military families move around a lot who was a late addition to the season 39 castdue to audience backlash over SNL hiring too many white cast members and not having a black female cast member since Maya Rudolph left in 2008. Yang was born to Chinese parents who moved to Queensland, Australia, then moved again to Canada, then moved again to Colorado.
