** Whenever people bring up ''[[VideoGame/SuperMarioBrosTheLostLevels Super Mario Bros. 2]]'' (the Japanese version which is also known as The Lost Levels in the overseas release), they mention how Nintendo refused to release the game due to its sheer difficulty. What people tend to forget is that A: Japanese gamers and critics ''also'' had a major bone to pick with the difficulty, and B: Nintendo of America wanted a different Mario game, and believed the sequel to ''VideoGame/{{Super Mario Bros|1}}.'' was simply just a copy of the first game, thus people wouldn't want to play the exact same game again with new tweaks. (In fact the staff of Nintendo of America made a list called "Why Atari Failed" which outlined things which they must never do: releasing a tweaked version of an existing game as a new game was one of them. Also there's the myth that the game released as ''Super Mario Brothers 2'' was a randomly chosen game given a graphic facelift. ''Doki Doki Panic'' was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, had many references to previous Mario games, ''and began its life as a sequel to Super Mario Bros.''! It was changed to a licensed game for Fuji TV midway through the development process.

*** In turn, it is sometimes claimed that ''Doki Doki Panic'' started development as a sequel to ''Super Mario Brothers''. An old interview between Wired and director Kensuke Tanabe said Tanabe was assigned to do a prototype for a "Mario-''style'' platformer focused around vertical levels" as his first job at Nintendo, but saying ''Doki Doki Panic'' was always intended to be a Mario game based on that is a leap of logic.

** It's sometimes claimed that for ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry'', the "Kaptain K. Rool" and "Baron K. Roolenstein" alter-egos of main villain King K. Rool were turned into separate characters for the Japanese translation of the games. Actually they're just disguises in Japan too. K. Rool's trophy in ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'' makes an odd statement about "his brother Kaptain K. Rool", but it's simply an error, and far from the only one in the game's trophy gallery.

* ''VideoGame/MassEffect3'' supposedly cut out the ''From Ashes'' DLC content to make money. There's one video of some guy editing a few values in a file, and then cutting to gameplay, where Javik is ordered to walk forward a few feet, which no one has ever replicated. There's [[https://www.gamespot.com/articles/parts-of-mass-effect-3-dlc-already-on-disc-ea/1100-6365673/ Bioware's claim that they had to include some of the code on-disc to "seamlessly integrate" Javik into the game]] (IE technical reasons), just like they did with Kasumi and Zaeed in ''VideoGame/MassEffect2''. In short, no actual ''evidence'' supporting the idea that the content was originally supposed to be in the game and was cut.
** Related to this is the persistent belief that ''any'' Day 1 DLC was cut from the game to make money. Most of the time, there's even less evidence to support this than the ''From Ashes'' controversy.

* Ubisoft said they couldn't include female playable characters in ''VideoGame/AssassinsCreedUnity'' because they were too hard to do. What they actually said: they ''wanted'' to include female characters in ''co-op'', but it was impractical to "double their workload"[[note]]Unity was made on a brand-new engine, so they had to redo all their mo-cap animation from scratch, and the co-op mode would have a much larger moveset than previous games vs. multiplayer/[[/note]]. This was immediately [[StrawmanFallacy strawmanned]] to the better-known version, and people are ''still'' pissed off at Ubisoft over it...even though the game did turn out to be a buggy unfinished mess. The male co-op characters were basically reskins of the campaign's lead. ** Link in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaALinkToThePast'' does not have pink hair. His hair was pink due to issues with getting the palette to work on the Super Nintendo. All official art clearly has him with a dark blond color. On a similar note, many fans think Zelda and Link are consistently blond. This is incorrect as the NES Link is a brunette, the first Zelda was a brunette, and the second Zelda (the Sleeping Zelda) is a redhead. On the other spectrum, the ''Twilight Princess'' Zelda isn't a brunette despite what fans think (she is a dark blonde). It wasn't until ''A Link To The Past'' that blond became a staple.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyTacticsAdvance'' has the main character, Marche, who is sucked into a fantasy world with his friends and he tries to find a way to return home while his friends don't want to go back. Many fans strongly believe that Marche was being a bully by forcing his friends to go home against their wills, even if it meant that they are miserable again and that his brother, Donned, is confined to a wheelchair again (he can't walk in the real world). In actuality, Marche actually attempts to reason with his friends and brother before he does anything else, but they all ignore him. Donned hires clans to fight Marche and capture him, Ritz eventually fights Marche herself to stop him from changing things back to normal, and Mewt uses all of his power as a prince to get Marche arrested. Ritz and Mewt eventually accept the fact that they can't stay in a fake world to run away from their problems and Donned even apologizes to Marche for going against him and is willing to go back home, even if it means he will be wheelchair bound again.

** A bit of clarification with PokemonSpeak. People say that only the [[{{Anime/Pokemon}} anime]] does this and that the games only have them starting ''VideoGame/PokemonXAndY''. Let us clarify both points. The games actually use PokemonSpeak since the first generation. Yes, even before ''Pokémon Yellow'' where Pikachu got speaking roles (yes, Pikachu saying its name was older than ''X and Y''). When people mention "Pokémon don't speak their names", they usually refer to the cries they make, forgetting the fact that the cries either are hampered by technology (you can actually notice Togepi's cry being similar to its anime talk) or follow the rule where intimidating/cool/adult Pokémon make more beastly groans (while subtly saying their names, see Charizard). People often forget that Pokémon [=NPCs=] exist, and that [[https://i.imgur.com/nSk793K.png talking to them you will realize that they DO speak their names]]. However in the early games (prior to ''VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite''), they translate their speak literally, so when you talk to Jigglypuff, it will say "Pu-pu-ri!" or something similar, as its name in Japanese is Purin. It was in ''Black and White'' where they updated the speak so that talking to the Pokémon will say their English names. Overall, it seems to follow the same pattern as the Japanese anime -- stuff that isn't an animal or has a sound-effect-based name uses its name, while others make more animal-type noises. And don't forget, way back in ''Red and Blue'', when confronting Mewtwo...

** Bowser is also commonly believed to kidnapping Princess Peach just because he has a crush on her. While in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG'' he wants a kiss from Peach for his part in a rescue effort, ''VideoGame/PaperMario'' shows in Bowser's diary that he had feelings for Peach and ''VideoGame/SuperPaperMario'' had him very stoked that he was going to be forced to marry her, he never expresses those feelings anywhere else in the ''Mario'' franchise. As of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioOdyssey'', it seems the idea of Bowser's VillainousCrush is being brought into the main series. His goal is at least to [[AndNowYouMustMarryMe marry her]], though whether it's politically based or romantically based is unknown.

** And on ''that'' note, WordOfGod is that the individual heroes of each game may not actually be ''named'' Link. As the series' title suggests, the games are ''legends''--meaning that they were passed down many, many generations after they happened. It's possible that each character we know as "Link" had their own name which was retroactively changed to "Link" by future storytellers. This is ''not'' true for Zelda or Ganon, however; every princess named Zelda actually had that name, and Ganon is usually the same exact person.

This factoid was turned into a recurring plot point on ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfZelda'' show that aired in the 80s, where Link already knew he needed to get two hits on Ganon to finish him off for good but could only ever land the first one before Ganon made an ExitVillainStageLeft. However, unlike in the games, his sword (or its beams) seemed to work fine for that purpose.

** It is common knowledge that Red, the first protagonist, is The SilentProtagonist through and through. In reality Red has been heavily implied to speak, but we never really hear his dialogue. He also smiles in a good majority of the official artwork. It's also common knowledge that he spent three years on top of a mountain. In the games it's never stated he stayed on a mountain all this time. He could have been on his journey, ended up on the mountain training, and you came along. Red being an eternally silent character, however, became AscendedFanon in later works: In both ''FireRed and Leafgreen'' and ''Sun and Moon'', Blue makes snappy comments regarding how silent Red is, and in both ''Black 2 and White 2'' and the aforementoined ''Sun and Moon'' Red only speaks in ellipses.

** Many people will swear up and down that in the games, Mewtwo was created (at least in part) by Team Rocket. While this is true for ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'' and ''Anime/PokemonTheFirstMovie'' ([[AudienceColoringAdaptation the popularity of which]] can be blamed for this misconception), in ''VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue'' no connection is made between the two at all. Likewise, many people will cite multiple scientists creating it. While the English localization wrote the Pokémon Mansion journals as if that were the case, the original Japanese instead had them written in the first person, and the actual Pokédex entries only mention one scientist (incidentally implied to be Dr./Mr. Fuji).
** It's not uncommon to find people who believe Genesect is a {{cyborg}} Kabutops and not a separate Pokémon. Besides the fact that the two are very different in inspiration (Kabutops is based on a horseshoe crab while Genesect resembles a cockroach) and typing (Kabutops isn't a Bug-type), nowhere does anything imply that Genesect's original form was any pre-existing Pokémon.

*** A huge one for this is PokemonSpeak. It's been decidedly the exception since day one in the games... and even in the anime, it only reaches the heights most people associate with the franchise in the dub version. In the Japanese version, Pokemon do use PokemonSpeak... but also frequently just use animal noises if it's appropriate to the type of Pokemon they are. Creator/FourKidsEntertainment inexplicably dubbed over almost every instance of this with more PokemonSpeak, and when The Pokemon Company took over, they were stuck with it for consistency.

* In ''VideoGame/FalloutNewVegas'', choosing the Wild Card ending lets the Courier rule over New Vegas himself, as opposed to being a pawn of one of the main factions. Actually, it's called the ''Independent'' Vegas ending for a reason: ''no-one'' gets to rule, that's the point. Even if the player has [[ChaoticEvil bad karma]] he won't seize personal power, instead just opting for AnarchyIsChaos. The final mission for the questline is even called "No Gods, No Masters", a term associated with anarchism.
* ''VideoGame/{{Fallout 4}}'' received praise from several sources for being the first Fallout game to allow you to play as a woman... despite gender choice being a feature [[OlderThanTheyThink since the first game.]] The confusion likely came from the fact that a gameplay demonstration at E3 in 2015 showed the character creation screen (showing the PC and their spouse getting ready for a day out) and put emphasis on selecting their gender (chosen by choosing either the husband or wife) as a jab at the infamous failure to include such an option in ''VideoGame/AssassinsCreedUnity''. This could easily give the impression that being able to pick the PC's gender was a new feature to someone not familiar with the series and was either not aware of (or assumed it was a response to) the controversy.
* ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'':
** The idea that series has no continuity or plotline, and is simply the same tale each time. In reality, even ignoring the series' complicated timeline, there have been direct sequels to individual plots. More recent ''Zelda'' games, like ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess Twilight Princess]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSpiritTracks Spirit Tracks]]'' have included more and more references to earlier games, indicating Nintendo is aware of this criticism[[note]]This ''used'' to be true, but an official timeline was provided in [[AllThereInTheManual Hyrule Historia]][[/note]].
** On that same note, "Link" is not a singular character, nor is Zelda. There have been many Links (who may or may not be related) and many Zeldas (who are all part of the same royal line [[note]]Thanks to the split timeline, there's technically three lines, but they're all descended from ''Ocarina of Time'' Zelda[[/note]]). Only Ganon(dorf) usually remains the same person from game to game. There is actually one instance of Ganondorf not being the same: ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaFourSwordsAdventures'', which is in the Twilight Princess timeline. Several hundred years after ''Twilight Princess'' he is born again in the Gerudo tribe, with no memories of his past life. You will hit a FandomBerserkButton if you assume Zelda and Link are same characters in each game.
** The only two Zelda games thus far that are a more-or-less direct sequels to another are ''Zelda II: The Adventures of Link,'' which states that the blood of Link must be sprinkled onto the ashes of Ganon (which was his final state at the end of the first game) to resurrect him, and ''Phantom Hourglass'' as a sequel to ''Wind Waker''; ''A Link To The Past'' has ''Link's Awakening'' and ''A Link Between Worlds'' however the former is largely unaffiliated to''[=ALTTP=]'' and the latter takes place generations later. Even then, the sleeping Zelda seen at the game's opening is not the same Zelda from the first game, as she's stated to have been sleeping for a very long time. "Sleeping Zelda" is not the Zelda from ''Skyward Sword'' either. She was the first princess to start the trend of "Princess Zelda" but not the first princess actually named "Zelda". On that note, not all princesses named Zelda are 'the' Zelda.
** A lot of people seem to be under the impression that the multiplayer modes of ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaFourSwords Four Swords]]'' and ''Four Swords Adventures'' require four players (probably [[TitleConfusion because of the title]]). In actuality they can be played with two or three people as well. So you don't have to worry about having to buy four GBA systems and cables if you only really want to play in a two or three player game. And ''Adventures'' can even be played single-player; so can the DSi port of ''Four Swords''.
** There's the impression that Link found Navi annoying or hated her. While it's true that many players hate Navi, Link actually valued her as a true friend and cherished her companionship, and it's implied that the "friend" that Link is mentioned to be searching for at the beginning of ''Majora's Mask'' is Navi.
** Speaking of why players hate Navi, that's also because of a misconception, since many believe that she constantly nags you to get back on track with the plot every five seconds. Actually, her reminders come about every 10-20 minutes real time, and she doesn't force you to view them. She doesn't say "Hey, listen!" as one line either - she says "Hey!" when she has something to tell you, then something else when you press the C-Up button to talk to her - "Look!" when pointing something out, "Listen!" when reminding you what you were supposed to be doing, and "Watch out!" when giving advice on an enemy.
** People saying that Link is incapable of talking. He ''can'' talk, and it's implied that he is responding to [=NPCs=], we just don't hear his replies (for instance, it's implied he says his name when someone asks it). Occasionally he speaks in the form of player-chosen responses. In the manga adaptations of the games, he talks all the time, and in Wind Waker he occasionally shouts "Come on!" (the only time in ''ANY'' game where he says actual words in voice rather than in text).
** Link being an adult in his older designs is this. So far no Link has been shown above eighteen, the Age of Majority in many modern countries. The oldest Link is only seventeen and even if he was eighteen he'd just ''barely'' be an adult.
** Some fans firmly classify Zelda games as RPG, while they are actually ActionAdventure (the only one to have any RPG elements at all is ''Zelda II'', which is otherwise a side-scrolling action game). The question of whether the series is an RPG is a common way to [[BrokenBase start arguments]].
** A lot of non-fans and media claim that Link's task in all the games is to SaveThePrincess. While this is true in a few games, it is very much not the case for all of them - most of the time, Zelda either doesn't appear at all in a game, or takes a fairly "backseat" role, and some games even have her working together with Link.
** Link is not an elf. His ''long'' (and that's specifically long, since all Kokiri have pointy ears) pointy ears indicate that he has Hylian ancestry (in the games where he has pointy ears at all). Depending on the Link in question, he's either a Kokiri (which is the closest the Zelda franchise has to elves) or a human. (To be fair, in the first game he was specifically stated to be an elf, but this was {{retcon}}ned out fairly quickly.)
* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'':
** Continuing the Nintendo examples, ''Pokemon'' does have a canon plotline within the games. ''[[VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen]]'' take place during the same time period as ''VideoGame/PokemonRubyAndSapphire''; ''[[VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver]]'' take place around the same time period as ''VideoGame/PokemonDiamondAndPearl'' (three years later). ''Gold'' and ''Silver'' are perhaps most notable for including the entire Kanto region from ''Red'' and ''Blue'' with references to the earlier games galore, while ''Ruby'' and ''Sapphire'' are more subtle with their references to the fact that ''Gold'' and ''Silver'' haven't happened yet. Abundant references to Johto in ''Diamond'' and ''Pearl'' led fans to the (accurate) assumption that ''Gold'' and ''Silver'' would be remade. ''VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite'' take place sometime after all other games; [[spoiler:Cynthia]] references the events of ''Platinum'' and a Team Plasma Grunt references the failings of Team Rocket and Team Galactic. A canon timeline of the games has been [[http://pokecharms.com/data/attachment-files/2014/05/83663_Pokemon-RPG-Timeline.png released]] ''VideoGame/PokemonXAndY'' apparently takes place in a new timeline and is an unnamed period after ''[[VideoGame/PokemonRubyAndSapphire Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire]]'', which still take place years before the Johto and Sinnoh adventures.
** The Pokémon world is often stereotyped by non-fans as "a bunch of kids enslaving wild animals and forcing them to fight each other". This is completely untrue. First of all, Pokémon in the series only feel enslaved if they are mistreated and/or not cared for properly, and are allowed to be released back into the wild if they do not feel comfortable being raised by a trainer. In fact, most wild Pokémon actually want to be captured by trainers, as many are in fact jealous of trained Pokémon. Secondly, Pokémon battling isn't the only activity Pokémon are used for; they are also employed as workers (for example, Chansey and Blissey make good nurses, while Machoke and Machamp are often used by moving companies) and training them is merely a way of exercising them, similar to dog-walking or playing with kittens; they are not "forced to battle" as a vast majority of them enjoy battling and are shown to feel mistreated if they are denied this freedom. On the other hand, the Pokémon who dislike battling are free to be kept as pets instead, and the Pokémon world considers it cruel and abusive to force them to fight if they do not want to. Lastly, Pokémon are not just owned by children in the series; a large majority of trainers are mature adults who, as mentioned before, make use of their abilities for various career or hobby-related purposes. Pokémon are even given the freedom to retire when nearing old age.
** Contrary to popular belief, not a single player character in the series is 10 years old. Not one. At least, it hasn't [[VagueAge been specified]]. The only player character to have their age confirmed is Red, who is said to be ''eleven'' years old as of Generation I (and III). The reason the whole "ten years old" thing has been ingrained in the public consciousness is because of the popularity of the anime, whose main character is 10. [[NotAllowedToGrowUp Eternally]].
** Nowhere in the games is it said that you must be ten to be a trainer or that all trainers start at age ten. In fact in the games you see trainers who are way younger than ten - think 4 or 5 years old at youngest and in ''VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite'' and ''VideoGame/PokemonXAndY'' you begin your journey in your mid to late teenage years. Most trainers in the 4 - 11 year old range don't wander that far from towns or areas with a lot of people, it's the older teens and up who you see on journeys (like Ace Trainers).
** Despite people associating Professor Oak for the "Are you a boy or a girl?" question, he wasn't the first one to ask it, nor was he the first professor to give the query. The question first appeared in ''[[VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver Pokémon Crystal]]'' asked by a disembodied voice, as though it was the game asking you rather than Oak. The first professor who asked it was in fact Professor Birch.
** All trainers get Pokedexes.. Except they don't. You're a special case, along with some other select trainers. Along the same lines, not every trainer gets their first Pokemon from the local lab. A few trainers mention that they got their Pokemon from a family member.
** A lot of people, when imitating the style of the game's battles, misuse the phrases "It's super effective" and "It's not very effective". These phrases are ''only'' used in the games when attack moves do more or less damage than normal due to [[ElementalRockPaperScissors a type advantage]]. They aren't used with moves that only inflict status effects.
** Nurses in the games do not look any more identical than nurses in RealLife. They just share one sprite, which Nurse Joy of the anime is based on.
** It should be noted that many of the misconceptions about the game are true for the anime, and vice versa. To say nothing of the various other adaptations and derivative works, which may well have completely unrelated canon. So the Common Knowledge in many cases is just a form of "All variations of Franchise/{{Pokemon}} have the same rules and background".
** Red's design is a bit of an issue. It's extremely, extremely common in fanart (especially yaoi or art making him to be a stoic BadassNormal) for him for have a more {{bishonen}} variant of his classic design; dubbed "Pixiv Red" or "Uber Red" by [[FanNickname fans]]. The major difference from his classic design is he's older than depicted in any game, has red eyes, and has straight hair. That design is used heavily in art for [[VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver HGSS]], while Red's design has long since changed to a different brunette design. In recent years it's become more common to use his canon design due to the backlash surrounding the {{fanon}} and the popularity of both ''Super Smash Bros'' and ''Anime/PokemonOrigins''.
*** And don't forget, way back in ''Red and Blue'', when confronting Mewtwo...
--->'''Mewtwo''': Mew!
** People often mistake or confuse Marill as a Pika-clone representative of [[VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver Generation II]]. The truth is that Pokémon never considers Marill and its line being related to Pikachu at all as it considers Pichu the Pika-clone of said generation (if anything, Marill has more ties to Jigglypuff or Clefairy due to Igglybuff's sudden gender ratio change as it has more similarities to Igglybuff and Cleffa than Pichu). Even in ''VideoGame/PokemonXAndY'', there's a skin for the Battle Menu that features all of the Pika-clones and Marill isn't in there (there's actually a circulating photoshopped version where Marill is placed there for the purposes of trolling people).
*** The source of all of this Pika-clone confusion can be traced back on magazine publications in the US. The infamous "Pikablu" as an original name for Marill used by magazines reporting the Pikachu Short of the [[WesternAnimation/PokemonTheFirstMovie first movie]] is the major reason as to why Marill is being related with Pikachu. It is something only the US had and it is still stuck to some people.
** In ''VideoGame/PokemonSunAndMoon'', a popular fan theory that popped up after players finished the story is that [[spoiler: The Ultra Beasts attacked and destroyed the universe all of the games before Gen VI are set in.]] In reality, this is only ''vaguely'' implied in the games themselves. The closest thing to confirmation we get is that [[spoiler: Anabel, who came from that universe, has some vague memory of defending her battle tower from some threath before falling through a wormhole. Not only is it not explicitly stated that the Ultra Beasts were this threath, but all that is known for sure is that it attacked the Battle Tower (and by extension, probably the Battle Frontier) of the GBA/DS universe, which is a major step down from what the rumours state.]]
* It's an often-held belief among fans that in ''VideoGame/FireEmblemTheSacredStones'', Eirika and Ephriam [[{{Twincest}} get married]] in the Japanese version's WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue. While the game ''does'' have an awful lot of IncestSubtext, this is not true in the slightest. It's just a result of fans believing "any paired ending ''must'' be romantic, so the obviously censored it", despite there being several non-romantic paired endings, even in this very game. ([[ParentalSubstitute Duessel and Amelia comes to mind.]])
** Likewise, [[VideoGame/FireEmblemTellius Ike]] is often assumed to be gay due to his only paired endings being with Soren and Ranulf, despite neither ending being explicitly romantic in context. Ike's sexuality is never touched upon in-story, but the fact that he has an [[IdenticalGrandson Identical Descendant]] in ''VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening'' would indicate he's either heterosexual or bisexual.
*** Surprisingly, those who choose to believe that Ike is gay have an explanation for that one. The Akaneia canon repeatedly refers to Marth as being descended from the hero Anri while also stating that Anri ''had no heir'', suggesting that "Anri's" bloodline is in fact descended from his brother Marcellus, thus proving that the term "descendant" [[YouKeepUsingThatWord is not exactly used properly in this series]] and thus allowing for the ''possibility'' of Priam actually being descended from Mist. [[BaseBreaker Naturally this isn't accepted by a lot of the other fans.]]
** In extension, while it's Common Knowledge that "the Fire Emblem series is full of BrotherSisterIncest!", the only game to feature any actual explicit incest between siblings is [[VideoGame/FireEmblemJugdral the fourth game.]] And even then [[spoiler: it turns out to be a case of [[AliensMadeThemDoIt The Villain Made Them Do It]].]] And while you have the option to [[KissingCousins pair cousins]] in some games in the series, that's all it is: an ''option''.
** It's now a commonly-held belief that the ''VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening'' Drama [=CDs=][[CuttingOffTheBranches canonize the nameless Village Maiden as Chrom's wife]]. This isn't true since the Drama CD has never been explicitly confirmed as canon, and it also never mentioned anything about who Chrom married. Fans just ''inferred'' it had to be the Maiden due to Lucina being an only child in the [=CDs=]. In reality, the Drama CD was explicitly ''avoiding'' making any of Chrom's potential wives "canon", or indeed any options in the game, so that it could be enjoyed by any player of the game regardless of their choices. Further, most fans base this "fact" off one forum post. The original poster [[PoesLaw was joking when he claimed the Drama CD made the Maiden canon.]]
* Yet another Nintendo-related example: the console known as the UsefulNotes/{{Wii}} was never supposed to be called the "Revolution." This was a working production name, just like the "Dolphin" ([[UsefulNotes/NintendoGameCube GameCube]]) or "Nitro" (DS). However, due to Nintendo revealing a great deal of information about the console before it had a name, media sources were forced to use the name Revolution over and over again until the public loved it so much that when the actual, controversial name was revealed, there was a backlash.
* Just like Link, most people get the idea that any HeroicMime is mute or a SilentBob, and this is either joked or carried on to {{Fanon}}. In reality, most games imply the hero talks normally, we just never get to hear/read it (or when they do, everyone forgets). [[VideoGame/HalfLife Gordon Freeman]] gives orders to multiple scientists/rebels during the game. [[VideoGame/ChronoTrigger Crono]] has a lot of lines while being judged. And so on...
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII''
** Who killed Aerith? Sephiroth, right? Not exactly. It was Jenova, acting as his avatar. Sephiroth actually spends most of the game hibernating in the Whirlwind Maze. Of course, because that part of Jenova changed its form to appear as Sephiroth, and acted as a puppet of his will, you could say "it was Sephiroth" and technically, you'd be right. The "real" Sephiroth is only encountered twice in the entire game: once in the Whirlwind Maze and once as the final boss.
** Similarly, it was the body of Jenova, shape-shifted to look like Sephiroth, which broke out of Shinra HQ and which the party was pursuing throughout Disc 1.
** The various "clones" encountered in the game are actually the former residents of Nibelheim, injected with Sephiroth's cells and exposed to Mako energy in an attempt to create duplicates of the fallen super-soldier (or maybe just to give him some pawns to manipulate).
** Speaking of Cloud, his characterization as "emo" is largely due to the perception that he was.
*** In the game proper, Cloud was a cocky punk who grew into a confident leader at the game's end, and that's after realizing that said "cocky punk" attitude was more of Zack's behavior that Cloud had imprinted onto his own memories. And while Cloud does have some moments of angst in the game (namely about how Sephiroth burned down Cloud's hometown and killed his parents, something Cloud would rightly want revenge for), the worst of it is after a massive MindRape that leaves him [[HeroicRROD stuck in a wheelchair, babbling incoherently]]. And even ''then'', after Tifa helps him [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan snap out of it]] with a BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind, Cloud [[AngstWhatAngst stops angsting about everything]] and focuses on defeating Sephiroth to save the world.
*** ''Advent Children'' has Cloud suffering from the effects of Geostigma, and while Cloud is pretty whiny here, it's heavily implied that the disease is messing with his mind and he may even have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It stops him from applying boot to rear not very much at all. Notably, after the Geostigma is cured at the end of the movie, Cloud is seen smiling and happy.
** You'll often hear people say Aerith is a HookerWithAHeartOfGold and that this was [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar hidden behind subtext]] involving flowers. This is not true.
* The ''VideoGame/BlazingStar'' "YOU FAIL IT!" screen appears when you time out a boss, yes, but most people who have not actually seen the screen first-hand think it's part of a NonStandardGameOver. In actuality, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_FmKVV_imM#t=1m28s timing out a boss will simply take you to the next stage]]; the screen is just the game's way of telling you that you lose your end-of-stage bonuses for taking too long.
* ''Franchise/MortalKombat'''s Scorpion and Sub-Zero. One of the most bitter rivalries in gaming, right? Well, not really. Scorpion got his revenge over [[CanonName Bi-Han]], the original Sub-Zero at the end of the ''first game''. In VideoGame/MortalKombat2, we meet Kuai Liang, the new Sub-Zero (and Bi-Han's younger brother). Scorpion actually becomes the protector of this new Sub-Zero, to atone for killing his brother. Aside from briefly attacking him during the [[VideoGame/MortalKombat4 fourth game]] (due to being BrainwashedAndCrazy), Scorpion remains watching over for the rest of the series (at least until the [[VideoGame/MortalKombat9 reboot]], which goes in a different direction).
** Daniel Pesina, the actor who played Johnny Cage and the ninjas in the [[VideoGame/MortalKombat1 first]] and the [[VideoGame/MortalKombat2 second game]], was not fired from Midway because of the infamous VideoGame/BloodStorm [[http://criticsight.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/blood-storm-poster-pesina-criticsight.jpg ad that featured him as Cage]] . He was already out of the company by that point, leaving from it due to a lawsuit over royalties. So, the Ad, rather than being labeled as a [[WhatAnIdiot very, very awkward]] moment, might have been Pesina's snarky revenge against Midway.
* ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'':
** Sonic is often thought of as being aquaphobic. While this is canon in some adaptations, it isn't canon in the games. He simply can't swim and has the same fear of drowning that everyone else has, especially people who can't swim.
** Everyone claim that his love of chili-dogs became game canon in the ''VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries''. It was made canon in the Japanese manual to ''VideoGame/SonicAdvance3''. There's also some common misinformation about where his love for hot-dogs came from - the earliest known reference was in an early ''ComicBook/SonicTheComic'' issue (though it was veggie dogs instead of chili dogs).
** For a long time, it was rumored that Jaleel White, voice actor of Sonic in ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog'', ''WesternAnimation/SonicSatAM'' and ''WesternAnimation/SonicUnderground'', was considered for the role of Classic Sonic in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'', but turned down the role or wasn't available. Jaleel White tweeted that he was never approached by Sega about voicing Classic Sonic, who was always intended to be mute.
** It also seems to be common knowledge that Cash Cash performed "Reach for the Stars" and "Speak with Your Heart", the main themes to ''VideoGame/SonicColors'', even though it was only the singer, Jean Paul Makhlouf (and his brother Alex on "Speak with Your Heart") performing and not the entire band.
** Sonic lives on Mobius. Except he doesn't. "Mobius" is a concept from Sega of America and Sega of Europe that was starting to be discarded even in the UsefulNotes/SegaSaturn days. In Japan, Sonic and company have always lived on an alternative version of Earth, which had humans and talking animals co-existing. In many western adaptations, he lives on Mobius or some other non-Earth planet. The games firmly establish that the planet he's on is Earth.
* It's common knowledge that Poison and Roxy in ''VideoGame/FinalFight'' were made into {{transsexual}} women because Nintendo of America had issues with "violence against women." In actuality, Poison's sex has been this since her conception. She is referred to as "new-half", the Japanese term for a transsexual woman. Despite the way she dresses and acts, and the fact that she has handcuffs and a riding crop, Poison isn't actually a prostitute. She's a wrestling manager who just happens to be rather unabashed about how sexy she is.
* ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'':
** Mario is always viewed as using his head to smash blocks open in the games, which leads to people joking that Mario suffers brain damage or a similar injury by the end of the game. While not obvious at first, if one looks closely when Mario jumps, he raises a fist in the air as he jumps and his fist hits the block, not his head. Ironically, if Mario is using a power-up that lets him fly or he is holding something in his hands, he really does use his head to break block, but this is usually due to lack of proper animations. In official media, Mario always uses his fist to hit blocks from underneath, though Luigi actually ''does'' bash blocks with his head in ''Super Mario All-Stars + VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld''.
** Bowser is also commonly believed to kidnapping Princess Peach just because he has a crush on her. While in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG'' he wants a kiss from Peach for his part in a rescue effort, ''VideoGame/PaperMario'' shows in Bowser's diary that he had feelings for Peach and ''VideoGame/SuperPaperMario'' had him very stoked that he was going to be forced to marry her, he never expresses those feelings anywhere else in the Mario franchise. At most, Bowser displays ambiguous feelings towards the princess and openly states that kidnapping her is what he does in order to lure Mario into his traps (or, in the instance of the first game, preventing her from using her magic to undo his changes to the Mushroom Kingdom).
** Everyone "knows" that Mario's original name was Jumpman, but it actually wasn't. Before the character debuted in ''VideoGame/DonkeyKong'', Creator/ShigeruMiyamoto called him "Mr. Video" and planned to include him in various different video games as cameos. And even before that, artwork of the character was labelled "Ossan", which is Japanese for "middle-aged guy".
** Whenever Daisy's kingdom of [[VideoGame/SuperMarioLand Sarasaland]] is brought up, it is always said to be a kingdom that consists only a desert. However Sarasaland is made up of four different climates. Alongside the desert of Birabuto, there is the aquatic Muda Kingdom, Easton is made up of rocky terrain, and the Chai Kingdom is based on Ancient China.
** Everyone "knows" that Mario is abusive towards Yoshi, hitting the poor dinosaur on the head to make it attack his foes. In actuality, it only appears this way due to sprite limitations in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld''; [[http://www.mariowiki.com/File:SMW_Art_-_Yoshi_and_Berry.png official artwork]] has always depicted Mario pointing forward at their target, not smacking Yoshi, and this is how it has always been represented in [[http://www.mariowiki.com/File:Bluepinktoadyoshi.png more recent media]] with higher-fidelity graphics. As for Mario dumping Yoshi down a {{Bottomless Pit|s}} just to save his own skin... [[WebComic/BrawlInTheFamily well, that's]] [[HeroicSacrifice up to]] [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation interpretation]].
** Mario is a middle aged man in many gamers eyes. While this was true in early titles - thus why Mario was played by older men in live action adaptations - it has long since changed. Mustaches tend to make people seem [[YoungerThanTheyLook older]] and he is a pudgy fellow but Mario is barely older than Peach. He's implied to be in his twenties according to ''Super Smash Bros Melee'' and seems at max in his mid thirties tops.
** Every fan clumps Rosalina, Peach, and Daisy into a trio of princesses. After all, Rosalina is a [[EnsembleDarkhorse fan-favorite]] princess. Canonically however she isn't a princess at all. She isn't a queen either. Rosalina has never ''officially'' been referred to as "Princess Rosalina". She is simply "Rosalina". Her crown is the cause of most of the trouble. It appears she was a princess as a child however that was centuries ago and she has no earthly kingdom anymore. It's possibly Rosalina's crown is an artifact from when she was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen meant to be]] related to Peach.
** {{Fanon}} often is [[WordOfDante confused]] for canon. There has never been a "Clawdia Koopa" (supposedly Bowser's ex and the mother of his children) mentioned in any official media; she is the creation of an early fansite. Daisy is also not Peach's cousin despite fans assuming otherwise.
** The arcade version of Super Mario Brothers, Vs Super Mario Brothers does not have levels from Super Mario Brothers 2 in it. The arcade game was made first, by many of the same people, and some levels were copied into the console sequel. Therefore Super Mario Brothers 2 has Vs Super Mario Brothers levels in it, not the other way around.
* Most online parodies of ''VideoGame/DoubleDragon'' depict [[GiantMook Abobo]] talking in HulkSpeak, despite the fact that the only time he ever did talk that way was in ''VideoGame/{{Battletoads}} & Double Dragon'', a non-canon crossover which got Machine Gun Willy's name wrong and had a made-up villain in the form of the "Shadow Boss" (which was actually Jimmy Lee's title in the first NES game).
* Everyone knows that in every ''Franchise/{{Ultima}}'' game, AuthorAvatar Lord British [[LordBritishPostulate can be killed using a glitch or an exploit in the rules.]] Actually, this is only true for some of the early games (and even then, in the first game, you didn't even ''need'' to do anything special to kill him as long as you could take on his bodyguards) - in the later games, the ability to kill Lord British is a deliberate EasterEgg. The greatest evidence against the glitch theory is in ''VideoGame/UltimaVII'', where to kill him, you need to drop a specific plaque from on top of his castle walls right as he's walking under it, which is an in-joke to the real Richard Garriot being injured by a falling metal bar - all things that would be impossible to be done in the game unless the developers intended you to be able to do it.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'' has the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5FTJxfV3pc infamous laughing scene]] that had generated a ton of hate from fans. Some fans also believe that the Japanese version of the same scene sounds better. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=mAgVjH9V9Ps#t=447s It doesn't]]. The laughing in the Japanese version sounds just as out of place as the English version; in both cases, the awkwardness is intentional. The point of the scene was to show how forcing yourself to laugh or smile makes you look weird, as evidenced by every other characters' reactions to Tidus and Yuna laughing. In-context, Tidus had just learned that his father, Jecht, had become Sin, and was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people. Tidus's laughter, thus, is incredibly forced, because he doesn't have a lot to be happy about.
* Several people believe that the ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' series is a franchise owned by Creator/SquareEnix with many Creator/{{Disney}} characters thrown in as cameos. Well, the truth is that it's ''entirely'' owned by Disney. Not only that, ''all'' [[OriginalGeneration original properties]] of the series are owned by them, as well (yes, this means Sora is a Disney character). Disney hired Square Enix to ''develop'' the games. It's all in the copyrights, which generally reads '''© Disney. Developed by SQUARE ENIX'''[[note]]If the ''Kingdom Hearts'' series really was a Square Enix owned franchise with Disney cameos, the copyrights would have said something along the lines of ''© [insert year of specific game's release here] SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. All Rights Reserved. Disney, its characters, and its settings are trademarks of Disney and are used with permission. All Rights Reserved.''[[/note]]. Furthermore, this was acknowledged in a [[http://www.kh2.co.uk/website/interviews/opm 2004 Official [=PlayStation=] Magazine interview]] with Creator/TetsuyaNomura (the director of the ''KH'' series).
** The ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' and ''VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou'' characters are the ones making cameos, as Disney allowed Square Enix to include them in the ''Kingdom Hearts'' games. On a side note, ''anything'' Square Enix does with their own characters within the ''KH'' series is still owned by them, which is why Cloud, Sephiroth, and [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII Squall]] can have their ''KH'' costumes in ''[[VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy]]''.
* Many Bronies assume that the infamous shutdown of ''VideoGame/MyLittlePonyFightingIsMagic'' by Hasbro was because the executives believed that a fighting game based off of a series targeted at young children was inappropriate and proceed to cry hypocrisy whenever official ''Friendship is Magic'' media features violence. In reality, the C&D was no different than any usual lawsuit of the sort - it was just because the game was using Hasbro's characters unofficially, and it was getting too much publicity for Hasbro to ignore without risking losing their trademarks.
* Many ''VideoGame/BlazBlue'' fans would assume that Ragna's out to free the world from NOL's tyranny by declaring that he'll take them on single-handedly. So yeah, Ragna is some sort of Myth/RobinHood for the people oppressed by [[TheEmpire the evil empire NOL]], which is about as vile as [[Franchise/StarWars Palpatine's Empire]], right? The more immersed player would gladly point out that Ragna is just minding his own business that is the destruction of the Cauldrons that NOL is operating instead of '[[LaResistance doing it for the people]]' and he just plows through anyone in his way, he couldn't care less about the other normal people who's fearful of his power (but he wouldn't attack them out of blue either). Oh and the NOL? They more or less aren't just your typical evil power hungry empire, their job in regulating the Armagus was actually important to the world tethering to near-destruction, snuff them out and there'll be a high chance that some madman takes the wrong Armagus and unleashes hell for everyone else. So as much as 'tyrannical' they became, they were actually a WellIntentionedExtremist police force. They just had the misfortune of not knowing that one of their enforcers, [[{{Troll}} Hazama]], is actually Terumi Yuuki who's manipulating the whole organization for his own gain, and is on the top of Ragna's shit list.
* ''VideoGame/{{Persona 4}}'':
** Nanako is not, as many people (even those who have actually played the game!) seem to think, the Protagonist's little sister. She is his ''cousin''. Although it's easy to get confused, given that she refers to him as "Big Bro" constantly throughout the game, and Yu (the protagonist)'s title in ''VideoGame/Persona4Arena'' is "The Sister-Complex Kingpin of Steel", referring to his BigBrotherInstinct towards Nanako. The confusion arises from a translation problem; when addressing a relative like a cousin in Japanese or talking about such a relative, the words used are the same ones like those used for actual siblings. This goes even further (and thus makes it more complicated) when addressing, say, an uncle or just young man who simply isn't that much older as "Onii-san" even though there is no family relation whatsoever.
** It's a common belief in some circles that [[spoiler:Naoto]] is canonically a [[spoiler:transgender boy]]. This isn't likely, as [[spoiler:Naoto clearly identifies as female in the game itself.]] In fact, most of her problems stem from the fact [[spoiler:she identifies as female: she feels that a woman wouldn't be taken seriously in her line of work, and that being a girl didn't fit her idea of a "cool, hard-boiled detective", a stereotype instilled by society Naoto is meant as a critique of Japan's rigid gender roles]] (something that goes over most western fans' heads due to ValuesDissonance.)
* The latter two installments of the ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamSeries'', ''[[VideoGame/BatmanArkhamCity Arkham City]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/BatmanArkhamOrigins Arkham Origins]]'', both had misconceptions about their respective voice casts thanks to type 2 of NowWhichOneWasThatVoice.
** Despite what people liked to think, while Creator/DeeBradleyBaker, Creator/CrispinFreeman, and Creator/KariWahlgren are in ''Arkham City'', Baker didn't replace Creator/SteveBlum as Killer Croc, and Freeman and Wahlgren weren't the respective voices of Robin and Vicki Vale; Blum [[https://twitter.com/blumspew/status/252082717276114945 was still Killer Croc]] and in addition to voicing the respective roles of Two-Face and Catwoman, Creator/TroyBaker and Music/GreyDeLisle are also the respective voice actors of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfjcFo_R6ms Robin]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4mFjqkH7DQ Vicki Vale]].
** For ''Arkham Origins'', the misconceptions included Steve Blum reprising the role of Croc again, Music/GreyDeLisle replacing Creator/KariWahlgren as Vicki Vale, either Creator/JamesArnoldTaylor or John Kassir as Firefly, and Kimberly Brooks returning to voice the young version of Barbara Gordon--except while Blum did return, this time he ''was'' replaced as the voice of Croc, with Creator/KharyPayton [[https://twitter.com/kharypayton/status/395287970569138176 taking over the role]]; as noted above, [=DeLisle=] didn't replace Wahlgren as Wahlgren was never Vicki Vale in ''City'' to begin with; while Kassir is present, Creator/CrispinFreeman [[https://twitter.com/CrispinFreeman/status/399039906066231296 was Firefly]]; and Taylor and Brooks aren't even in the game.
** Most people consider Ritz's reason for staying extremely selfish (Compared to Mewt's mother and Doned being able to walk), she doesn't want to return because her natural hair is white instead of pink, but when the game ends, Shara convinces her that white hair is beautiful so she doesn't even have a problem anymore right? Except that is not the case. Ritz problem isn't ''a hair color she doesn't like'', it's the fact that she is bullied because of that AND because she is a girl. Her online description says she is an ace in classes and sports and yet people "give her a wide birth", which means she isn't popular at all. When she tries to convince Marche to stay she says people will respect him and he can have many friends, but Marche never had those problems, he was the new kid, he was never bullied for real or tried hard to make friends. Those are Ritz problem's, but she will never admit it, she would rather lie to herself and blame the hair. Then Shara convinces her the hair was never the problem at all, Ritz wants to stay to fulfill her FeministFantasy.
* ''Franchise/HarvestMoon'':
** Many players outside of Japan seems to think Natsume created the games when they are only responsible for translations and creating the English title. Natsume does currently make games under the ''Harvest Moon'' name however they're not the actual ''Harvest Moon'' titles. The Japanese games are now being translated under ''Story Of Seasons'' by [=XSeed=].
** ''Harvest Moon'' fans often believed that the classic blue-capped hero from the game is named "Jack". In fact, certain fans are often shocked when they find out that his official name is actually "Pete" and this was first made clear in a Game Boy Color game.
** ''VideoGame/HarvestMoon64'' and ''VideoGame/HarvestMoonBackToNature'' are often mistaken for the same game but [[FandomBerserkButton fans will make it clear]] that they're not. The latter was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen meant to]] be a port but the porters ended up changing so much they just completely retooled the game. The two games have the same cast and SuperDeformed artstyle but otherwise play like two completely separate installments. The characters personalities, relationships, and roles were changed quite a lot.
** Lumina from ''VideoGame/HarvestMoonAWonderfulLife'' is not eleven to twelve no matter what fans say. Her age on the Japanese website for the first game is given as fourteen, before she was given an AgeLift to sixteen ([[ValuesDissonance eighteen internationally]]) in ''Another Wonderful Life'' so Rock could have [[PromotedToLoveInterest a crush]] on her.
** It's often assumed for ''A Wonderful Life Special Edition'' that you can only get a daughter if you married Lumina. In actuality, you can have a son or daughter with any wife. A mistake that even the Wiki makes. The error probably persists because Lumina's son and the generic daughter design are extremely similar as toddlers.
* One regarding ''Franchise/ShinMegamiTensei'' that's pervasive on this very wiki is the idea that whether the events of ''VideoGame/ShinMegamiTensei'' or ''VideoGame/DevilSummoner'' and ''VideoGame/{{Persona}}'' happen depends on whether the events of ''VideoGame/ShinMegamiTenseiIf'' happen. Not quite. The events of ''If...'' explicitly happen in ''both'' timelines. What makes the difference is whether they're ''noticed'' -- in the ''Shin Megami Tensei'' timeline, the events are largely swept under the rug, leading to TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt. In the ''Devil Summoner'' and ''Persona'' timeline, enough of the right people notice this event to realize the impending threat of demons and prevent nuclear apocalypse.
* In ''VideoGame/StarControl'', the Mmrnmhrm are a race of robots who have lost their memory and have no idea who made them or why. A lot of fans believe they were made by the Precursors. Actually, the game never gives even the slightest hint as to who made the Mmrnmhrm. And while the Precursors ''did'' create one of the game's races, it wasn't the Mmrnmhrm: it was the Mycon.
* ''VideoGame/TheTwistedTalesOfSpikeMcFang'' has a persistent rumor surrounding it that the player character in the Japanese version [[PickyPeopleEater ate hearts]] to recover health, but the {{Bowdlerise}}d North American replaced them with tomatoes, turning Spike into a VegetarianVampire. Actually, the tomatoes are also in the Japanese version; [[WidgetSeries it's just that kind of a game]]. (The game's Japanese-only predecessor, ''Makai Prince Dorabocchan'', even has separate meters for hearts and tomatoes.) This seems to be the result of GossipEvolution based on typical descriptions of the game [[http://warriornation.net/Forum/showthread.php?t=47092 comparing and contrasting it]] with more typical ActionAdventure games like ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZelda'', where HeartsAreHealth (and HeroesPreferSwords).
* Thanks to MemeticMutation, everybody "knows" that in "''VideoGame/{{Portal}}'', the cake is a lie. It's not! TheStinger reveals there's really a Black Forest cake somewhere in Aperture. Whether GLaDOS really intended to give it to Chell is another story.
* ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight'':
** The game has an ending screen with the quote "Let us go out this evening for pleasure. The night is still young." Many think this is a quote from ''{{Literature/Dracula}}'', but it actually isn't. [[note]]It doesn't appear to be a quote at all and seems to be telling the player to go out and get some night air.[[/note]]
** One of the most iconic lines from the game is "What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets!" Except it's not original to the game at all; it's actually an uncredited Andre Malraux quote.
* ''Videogame/StreetFighterI'''s canonical ending is Ryu defeating Sagat with a Shoryuken and scarring him, right? Nope; in Alpha 3 it was retconned that Sagat beat Ryu, almost to death, in the tournament, and that he was scarred by a cheap-shot Metsu Shoryuken from [[SoreLoser Evil]] [[SuperPoweredEvilSide Ryu]].
** Similarly, Akuma is not the bloodthirsty demon that most adaptations make him out to be. In actuality, he is very careful to maintain his own personal code of ethics which includes but is not limited to ''never'' fighting somebody weaker then him, and even then only fighting at his full potential against a truly worthy adversary. Akuma has only ever actually killed ''one'' person; his master Goutetsu, who accepted Akuma's challenge of a fight to the death. He didn't even kill M.Bison at the end of Street Fighter 2; Bison ''committed suicide to escape the Raging Demon''.
** And speaking of Bison, most people assume that [[VideoGame/StreetFighterAlpha Final Bison]] is Bison utilizing all of his power at once. This is actually pretty far from the truth; Final M.Bison is ''not even close'' to his full potential, it is simply him channeling as much of his power as possible at once without disintegrating his host body, and even that causes it to slowly degrade.
* Despite the stereotypes about its fanbase, ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft'' is '''not''' a straightforward SwordAndSorcery HighFantasy saga--it's a FantasyKitchenSink featuring both fantasy and science-fiction elements, and it parodies {{fantasy}} tropes (or [[PlayedForLaughs plays them for laughs]]) nearly as often as it plays them straight. Yes, it does include elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls, wizards, knights, and most everything that you'd expect from a [[Creator/JRRTolkien Tolkien]] pastiche, but it also features extraterrestrials as one of its playable races--with their own crashed spaceship, to boot--as well as {{Steampunk}}-flavored airships as a form of mass transit. You can usually spot a ShallowParody of ''[=WoW=]'' by whether or not they're aware of this.
* If you've ever had discussions on [[UltimateShowdownOfUltimateDestiny which giant robot is the strongest]], you've probably heard ''VisualNovel/{{Demonbane}}'' mentioned. It's common knowledge among people who talk about it that "Elder God Demonbane" is omnipotent and grows so large it pops the universe. The second one is partially true: a form of Demonbane in the prequels does grow so large it pops the universe. However, that was ''War God'' Demonbane. ''Elder God'' Demonbane, in its one and only appearance, does not grow beyond its base size of 55 meters. Furthermore, Elder God Demonbane is never suggested to be omnipotent in the franchise: for one thing, it may be capable of ''defeating'' Outer Gods like Nyarlathotep, but it does not possess the means to destroy them. It has to settle for sealing most of them away, and Nyarlathotep is immune to even that! The only reason it was able to seal up Azathoth was because, well, Azathoth's a sleeping [[AlmightyIdiot mindless idiot]], and if it ever woke up and actually tried to break free of Demonbane's prison, it's stated that it could do so without problems.
* The character most people think is Giana's twin in ''VideoGame/TheGreatGianaSisters'' is not her sibling. Giana ''does'' have a twin sister, but many people who know the series simply as "That ''Mario'' knockoff" think that Punk Giana is her sister. It's not a case of SiblingYinYang, Punk Giana is Giana's SuperMode, akin to Super Mario.
* There is a frequently cited quote that the [[MemeticMutation famous line]] from ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim'' about several characters "taking an arrow to the knee" is an old-fashioned slang phrase for getting married. Thus the guards didn't get [[CareerEndingInjury injured]], they simply settled down. The problem is no such slang exists.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Undertale}}'', it's incredibly common fanon that Monster Kid is male. In fact, like many of the characters in the game, [[AmbiguousGender their gender is never stated]], and they could easily be male, female or even gender-neutral.
** Like Link, the fandom often portrays the main character, [[spoiler:Frisk]], as mute. In fact, this is impossible since the character has phone conversations with the other characters over the course of the game, and just like Link, occasionally speaks in the form of player-chosen responses.
* Many people think that Rockstar omitted planes from ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV'' out of respect for the events of 9/11, but the real reason for doing so was that the map was simply too small and densely packed for airplane travel to be viable.
* Zero can be {{killed off|ForReal}} in ''VideoGame/MegaManX3''. Well... not exactly. If he loses his one and only life, he only comes back with a damaged power generator, and for the rest of X's adventure, he stays in Dr. Cain's lab for repairs. This is true even if you go through the secret method to give his Beam Sabre to X. For all intents and purposes, however, it's treated as a FinalDeath.
* Everyone knows that the skill system in FinalFantasyII was widely hated, which lead to its absence from FinalFantasyIII. However, these two games were under development at the same time (and every line of code was written by the same person!), making it impossible for the team to take feedback into consideration when deciding fundamental aspects of the third game's play mechanics. In reality the level/experience system was kept for FF 3 because the game's main gimmick, the class system, had already been decided upon, and it would have been far too difficult to incorporate it with the FF 2 skill system that they were working out at the same time.
