The team appeared sporadically in ''Avengers'' titles during the early 90s, and were even briefly joined by more "official" ''Avengers'' members Hawkeye and Mockingbird. After a few years absence, the team returned, renaming themselves the "Lightning Rods" after the ComicBook/{{Thunderbolts}}, who were popular at the time, and appearing in both the Thunderbolts and ComicBook/{{Deadpool}} comics of the time. Eventually, they reverted back to the name Great Lakes Avengers in time for a series of very small cameos in the [[CrisisCrossover JLA/Avengers]] crossover. (It should be noted that this is around the time the team started calling themselves the GLA. [[WildMassGuessing Coincidence?]] And apparently this confirms that they are actually "real" Avengers after all somehow.)

* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Their encounter with the Asbestos Man (an old Human Torch villain) had them encountering a villain as unimpressive as they were; poor Orson Kasloff had barely managed to beat lung cancer and needed an oxygen tank to breathe. The encounter was a stalemate, as Asbestos Man was too weakened by age and illness to actually fight them, and none of them wanted to go near him for fear of exposure to his costume--ultimately, it ended in a surrender when they promised to remember him as one of their great villains.
