* CainAndAbel: An interesting variant of this trope. Despite being the younger brother, Rex is the Cain to Rutger's Abel, but not in a classic sense. Rex loves his older brother, but to end the circle of battle between the Signers and Dark Signers he tries to get the same powers Rutger once possessed. He already has Rutger's arm with the Dragon Head, then Rex lets himself get killed by his brother so that he will be revived as a Dark Signer.

* {{Irony}}: Security tried to arrest him for attempting to build a bridge that would connect Satellite with Neo-Domino City. Yet after jumping from the unfinished bridge and miraculously arriving at his desired destination, he ended up being the head of Security himself.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: In the original version of the anime, his family name is spelled as "Goodwin". The Japanese pronunciation is "Gohdowin", but it's neither "Guddowin" nor "Goddowin" (for Godwin), so the double O is actually just a long O instead of a U.

to:

* SelfMadeMan: While he used to be a professor from the Tops, after the Zero Reverse he ended up on Satellite and became a nobody. Despite not completing the Daedalus Bridge, he managed to arrive at Neo-Domino City, but in cost of losing his left arm. Afterwards, he somehow managed to become the president of Security, who ironically were trying to arrest him when he was building the Daedalus Bridge.

* TemporaryBulkChange: Once he reveals himself as a Dark Signer.Signer, he gets much more muscular.

Added DiffLines:

* WalkingShirtlessScene: Due to his TemporaryBulkChange, he ends up without wearing a shirt for the rest of his life.

* AdaptationalVillainy: He's much more nefarious in the manga, sealing duelists into cards and supporting Goodwin's quest for power.

* ScaryBlackMan: He's scary and he's black and he's a man.

to:

* ScaryBlackMan: He's A very large, and considering his penchant for torture, fairly scary and he's black and he's a man.example.

Team 5D's fourth opponent. They were shown to be very important when they were immune to Yliaster's changes to history, due to having a new set of God Cards (the Aesir, based on Norse mythology). They're notable for being the very first Divine Type Monsters since the 3 Egyptian god cards from the [[Anime/YuGiOh very first series]], as well as the first Divine type of Synchro monsters.

All three use Nordic decks built around summoning Aesir. Dragan uses Nordic Beasts and swarming effects to summon Thor, Brave uses Nordic Alfars to dummon Loki supported by a large number of Trap cards, and Harald uses Nordic Ascendants to summon Odin coupled with a large number of burn effects.

%% * ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkillThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Boy howdy, their effects. Immunity to Spells and Traps are the norm for boss monsters in the franchise, but immunity to attacks and being able to flat-out direct attack is something else. * AwesomeButImpractical: Their ace card, Zushin the Sleeping Giant, is this ''in-Universe''. It's also revealed that practically everyone owns a copy of Zushin, but no one ever managed to summon him. Even Team Taiyoh themselves only managed to summon him in their duel with Team 5Ds, having won their other matches with the burn effect of Speed World 2.

A series of Dragon-Type Synchro Monsters that appear only in the manga.

to:

A series of Dragon-Type Synchro Monsters that appear only in the manga. They are dark versions of the Signer Dragons in fact, the Signer Dragons appear in the manga in alternate forms as Duel Dragons. They were used in ancient Turbo Duel rituals to seal darkness, or so Rex Godwin claims. In actuality they were by worshippers of the Ultimate God, Ultimaya Tzolkin, the manga's equivalent to the Crimson Dragon. Rex Godwin intends to use the Duel Dragons to revive the God and claim its power.

* AdaptationalVillainy: In the anime, the Signer Dragons and the Crimson Dragon are benevolent. In the manga, the Duel Dragons are tools of evil and the Crimson Dragon is re-imagined as Ultimaya Tzolkin, the GreaterScopeVillain of the manga.

* EvilCounterpart: Meta-wise, they are this to the Signer Dragons, as plot-important Synchro Dragons. But where the Signer Dragons are good, the Duel Dragons are evil.

* AntiVillain: All he wants to do is save his brother from the Ultimate God.

* AuthorityInNameOnly: He's called "Commander Koda" in the dub, even though he doesn't command anything. (Probably meant as a stage name.)

* CrazyPrepared: ''Thinks'' he has something for everything Aki's deck can throw at him. He doesn't seem to realize she can improve it by switching the cards just as anyone else can.

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When he realizes that he's risking his life against Aki's Psycho Power, he doesn't care for the payment anymore and just wants to finish the duel as soon as possible.
* TooDumbToLive: Despite the fact that he realizes that Aki's Psycho Powers are dangerous and that he's risking his life dueling her, he continues the duel to defeat her as soon as possible instead of just surrendering.
