Yugi's archrival who was undefeated at Duel Monsters until Yugi summoned Exodia to defeat him in a world-first. Since then he's been attempting to reclaim his title and challenge Yugi again. Barring that he frequently contends with people who have a grudge against Kaiba Corporation, usually due to the fact it was a weapons company under his father's ownership and thus he inherited a lot of blame when he took over.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Before he was the SmugSuper JerkAss we all know, he used to be a FauxEvillyAffable CompleteMonster, even more so during the Death-T saga. He obtained all of his Blue Eyes White Dragon cards through blackmail (possibly involving their owners committing suicide) and subjected Sugoroku (Solomon in the dub) to realistic holograms which almost led to a heart attack. Along with his all-me personality, he was willing to kill his Yuugi and his friends (and a baby) with his amusement park of death involving trained killing professionals and a known axe murderer, all because Yugi beat him in a card game and gave him a karmic Game Penalty, and was willing to give a Penalty Game to Mokuba for losing to Yugi. He gets better after his Mind Crush, though, to the point where he was disgusted by Marik's methods of having Yugi and Jonouchi duel to the death and threatening to make Anzu injest a cyanide pill during Battle City, even though he used to be just as bad, and arguably worse.

* CompleteMonster: Starts out as this during the Death-T saga. He obtained all of his Blue Eyes White Dragon cards through blackmail (possibly involving their owners committing suicide). ** He knocks people out with dice much like how Kaiba is able to disarm a gun by jamming it with cards. Considering how he was raised similarly to Kaiba (the "never lose at games" philosphy), his prowess at using his gaming motif for... everything, is not surprising.

* DependingOnTheWriter: In the manga, he's a serious character with emotional problems, comparable to Kaiba. In the anime, he's a narcissistic guy who somewhat revels in the attention he gets from girls and after he joins the gang, he forms a comedic duo with Honda for Shizuka's affections.
