'''Seto Kaiba (海馬 瀬人; ''Kaiba Seto'')'''
-->Voiced by: Creator/HikaruMidorikawa (Japanese Toei anime), Creator/KenjiroTsuda (Duel Monsters), Creator/EricStuart (English)

-->''"Games mean conflict - a combat between two enemies. It’s the same for all of them! Cards, chess, the blood-soaked wars of the human race… All these are different kinds of games. Do you know what god gave to people so they could play games in this world? A single chip called life!"'' --'''Seto Kaiba''', Chapter 106 (Duelist Kingdom), in response to Yugi's unwillingness to send him off to his death.

Kaiba is a rival of Yugi Mutou and Dark Yugi. He's the head of the gaming company "Kaiba Corporation" and was first introduced as a prodigal, cold-hearted gamer who stopped at nothing to achieve his goals, even resorting to torturing or killing his opponents. Following his second battle with Yugi during his Death-T games (where he acted as a [[BigBad main antagonist]]), he was left in a coma, where he reconstructed his heart and emerged less evil. Since then, rather than a villain, he merely attempted to reclaim his title and challenge Yugi again - retaining his arrogance, but shares compassion for his younger brother, Mokuba.

Basically, he's initially a FauxAffablyEvil SmugSnake before CharacterDevelopment changed him into a SmugSuper {{jerkass}} BreakoutCharacter with much more involvement with the plot as a anti-hero. Even though he's a supporting character, he appears with a lot of prominence in the second series anime adaptation - in manga canon, he has an ambition to destroy Kaiba Corporation's past as a weapons company under his father's ownership, and this subject takes up the majority of two FillerArc sagas of the second series anime and is a vital subplot of a third. He is the reincarnation of Seto, one of the Six Priests who protected the Pharaoh Atem, Yugi's past life, and his monster Blue Eyes, is the reincarnation of his lover, Kisara.

In gaming, he most definitely mains Duel Monsters. He uses a Power deck which focuses on summoning the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, of which he has the only three intact copies in existence. He's also fond of Deck Destruction and removing cards from play.

-----
* AbusiveParents: KnightTemplarParent is about the nicest thing that could be said about Gozaburo.
* AdaptationalHeroism: In the second anime. He's still acerbic and (early on) thuggish enough to abduct an old man over a trading card, but his outright murderous behavior is skipped over. He doesn't believe in stealing to get ahead in life, as is evident when he goes up against Zigfried.
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the Toei anime, he had ''[[YouGottaHaveBlueHair green]]'' hair and light brown/gold eyes. This was corrected in the second anime and the Toei movie, however.
* AgentScully: In the dub, where his insisting that everything supernatural around them is some sort of trickery comes across as him trying to convince himself. In the original, Kaiba didn't disbelieve in magic, in fact his Shadow Game with Dark Yugi was his inspiration to develop his virtual projectors. He just didn't have much interest in the magical chaos occurring around him because most of the time it wasn't his problem.
* AllPowerfulBystander[=/=]BystanderSyndrome: During Battle City.
* AloofBigBrother: To Mokuba, especially in the manga.
* AntiVillain: Type I
** Type IV during Duelist Kingdom. He may have still been a jerk, but any truly villainous traits in him were gone thanks to being Dark Yugi's "Mind Crush" Penalty Game.
* [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Arrogant Duelist Guy]]
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking
* {{Badass}}: Just as much as Dark Yugi.
** In the manga, [[http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/2639/kaibagar.png he smacks one of Pegasus's henchman WITH A BRIEFCASE, and then proceeds to threaten to snap his neck within it unless he gets to talk to Pegasus]]. [[http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/9031/kaibagun.png He also hijacked a helicopter that planned to hijack HIM]].
** BadassBookworm: A genius CEO who's trained in Krav Maga.
** BadassLongcoat: Have you ''seen'' his trenchcoat?
** BadassNormal: The most powerful Duelist in the series to lack a Millennium Item (the only other contender is Jonouchi, and that's only [[AdaptationalWimp in the manga]]). His only losses in the manga were from wielders, his only losses in the anime were from Noah (who cheated) and Dartz ([[SNKBoss who basically cheated]]), and he's one of the few Duelists to beat an Item-wielder without being one himself.
** EmpoweredBadassNormal: He may not be an Item-wielder, but he does have some untapped mystical abilities, letting him wield Obelisk and Critias. Then of course, there's also the fact that he owns the best and biggest collection of [[PowerEqualsRarity rare and powerful cards]].
* BerserkButton: Don't threaten Mokuba, don't threaten his company, don't destroy or take control of his Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and ''don't'' [[TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou defeat Yugi before he can]].
* BigBad: Of the Death-T arc in the manga and Toei anime.
* BigBrotherInstinct: After Death-T and reconstructing his heart ''the right way'', he will do ''anything'' to save his little brother.
* BiggerStick: His Duel Monsters deck is chock full of them, giving him a pretty one-sided advantage. See also: PowerEqualsRarity.
* BilingualBonus[=/=]StealthPun: ''Kai'' and ''ba'' are Japanese for ''sea'' and ''horse'' respectively; in Japanese mythology, seahorses are considered be to larval dragons, and Kaiba does have a affinity for his Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He was this in the manga and his debut episode in the Toei anime. The second anime adaptation, from the first episode on he doesn't even try acting nice to get what he wants; he ''demands'' it.
* BrainyBrunette: Seeing as he came up with the Solid Vision system, this is an obvious one.
* BreakoutCharacter: Originally only meant to be a one-shot antagonist-of-the-day, then promoted to a main antagonist of an entire arc, then promoted to the main antagonist for almost the entire Toei series, then promoted to a recurring antihero.
** Especially evident in the second-series anime, which included two filler arcs where the villains were ''his'' enemies instead of Yugi's, and included him in the Memory World arc when in the manga his character departed after Battle City and had no part in the Memory World.
* BrokenAce: Type II. Rich, famous, successful, and none of it is good enough for him because he's overshadowed by Yugi, is still haunted by the memory of Gozaburo, and is full of hatred for the both of them.
* TheChessmaster: Mostly during his time as a BigBad, but it's still there.
* CainAndAbel: In the second series anime, the Abel to Noah's Cain.
* CallingYourAttacks: Always with his best monsters:
-->''HOROBI NO [[GratuitousEnglish BAAAAASUTTTTOOOO SUTORIIIIIMMMUUU]]!''
* CatchPhrase: "Kudaran!" ("Nonsense!")
* CharacterExaggeration: The 4Kids dub of the anime takes Kaiba's rivalry with Yugi and contempt for Jounouchi and turns them UpToEleven. In the Japanese version, Kaiba makes it clear that he respects Yugi as a talented duelist and WorthyOpponent, while his dub counterpart is much more psychotically obsessed with defeating Yugi no matter the cost. Similarly his Japanese counterpart says it was a mistake to duel Jonouchi to test his Duel Disk since it killed his motivation, while in the dub he calls him a worthless dog and spends the duel sneering at him. The dub also makes him a FlatEarthAtheist completely in denial of all the magical phenomena going on around him, no matter how obviously real it is. Japanese Kaiba doesn't deny the magic, he just doesn't care (in fact, in the manga, ''Dark Yugi's Shadow Games are what inspire him to create the Duel Boxes/Duel Disks'').
** His infamous dragon obsession is also largely an anime thing. In the manga, the only dragons he really uses are Blue-Eyes and its fusions, and the majority of his other cards are Warriors, Fiends, and Beast-Warriors - Swordstalker, Judge Man, Battle Ox, Vorse Raider, Rude Kaiser, La Jinn, Ryu-Kishin, etc. His Deck was focused on brute force, rather than any given archetype. The filler arcs add a lot more Dragons to his Deck - Spirit Ryu, Different Dimension Dragon, Luster Dragon, Chaos Emperor Dragon, Spear Dragon, Clone Dragon, Paladin of White Dragon - and consequently his original Power Deck cards, ironically, end up looking out of place.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Before he was the SmugSuper JerkAss we all know, he used to be FauxAffablyEvil, even more so during the Death-T saga. He obtained all of his Blue Eyes White Dragon cards through blackmail (possibly involving their owners committing suicide) and subjected Sugoroku (Yugi's grandfather) to realistic holograms which almost led to a heart attack. Along with his all-me personality, he was willing to kill his Yugi and his friends (and a baby) with his amusement park of death involving trained killing professionals and a known axe murderer, all because Yugi beat him in a card game and gave him a karmic Penalty Game, and was willing to give a Penalty Game to Mokuba for losing to Yugi. He gets better after his Mind Crush, though, to the point where he was disgusted by Marik's methods of having Yugi and Jonouchi duel to the death and threatening to make Anzu ingest a cyanide pill during Battle City, even though he used to be just as bad, and arguably worse.
** He also had more SlasherSmile and StepfordSmiler than his current SmugSmiler he normally wears when not being a PerpetualFrowner.
* DeadpanSnarker: He has quite a few moments, including some in the dub that border on LampshadeHanging.
-->"Alright, [[FillerArc that little detour was a complete waste of my time and effort]]. [[LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain So let's move on and pretend that nonsense never happened]]."
* DeathByAdaptation: In ''The Sacred Cards'' video game, he duels Marik in the semi-finals of Battle City while Yugi duels the player. Marik is the BigBad so it goes as well as you'd expect.
* DemonicPossession[=/=]GrandTheftMe: In the Memory World RPG of the Millennium World arc, Priest Seto gets possessed by Zorc's High Priest of Darkness/Akhenaden.
* {{Determinator}}: Because games are serious business. (Rescuing [[DesignatedVictim your little brother]] is also serious business.)
* {{Deuteragonist}}: In the anime, where he gets a lot more screentime, his relationship with Yugi & Dark Yugi is expanded upon, and unlike the manga he journeys to the Memory World RPG alongside the rest of the cast, ultimately helping them defeat Zorc. And that's without getting into the fact that the villains of the "Virtual Nightmare" and "Kaiba Corp Grand Prix" {{FillerArc}}s, and the EvilGenius from the "Waking the Dragons" arc, are his enemies, rather than Yugi's. Put all these factors together, and he's easily the second most important character in the anime. He even takes out the {{BigBad}}s of the "Virtual Nightmare" and "Grand Prix" arcs.
** Maybe he's the reason why the anime makes it a point to make Jonouchi less badass and take away Bakura's screentime from the manga. Perhaps the staff are Kaiba fans?
* DoesNotLikeGuns: In the anime, he seems to have this, tossing away a handgun after disarming its wielder. Manga Kaiba was more of a CombatPragmatist.
* DramaticWind: His white trenchcoat is ''always'' flaring out behind him, even when he's just walking down the hall. His other coats flare too, but not nearly as much so it's more believable.
* EasilyForgiven: Not as much in the second anime, but is jarring to see him and his brother suddenly turn a leaf after failing to kill them in the Death-T arc, from poisoned foods to unleashing killers and assassins on them.
** Heavily averted in Jonouchi/Joey's case, as he makes it clear how much he despises him for his actions during the arc. When Pegasus defeats Kaiba and traps his soul in a card, Jonouchi personally voices his opinion that he got what he deserved.
* EnemyMine[=/=]YouOweMe: Most of the time when he directly teams up with the main cast, it's because they share a mutual enemy, or they've helped Kaiba in some manner (such as saving Mokuba) and he feels he has to repay the favor.
** DebtDetester: It bothers him. He'd like to possibly step away from the thought of "getting friendly" with Yugi and his friends.
* EnfanteTerrible: In the backstory. He's not as bad as the anime filler's Noah, but he still bordered on creepy.
* [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes Even Jerkasses Have Loved Ones]]: After Death-T. Even in his moments of biggest [[{{Jerkass}} Jerkassery]], Kaiba still cares deeply for his brother Mokuba and would never do anything to hurt him.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He's perfectly okay with endangering infants, allowing a homicidal maniac trying to kill the main characters out of revenge, and attacking innocent people, but when other people do something similar or worse, he feels compelled to stop them.
** Well, by that point, he didn't have those low standards anymore.
** During the harbor deathmatch between Yugi and Jounouchi, he noted a disgust with the proceedings, claiming in the manga that "even at my worst, I would never have done this." This was because the Death-T challenges, even the really lethal ones, were all possible to win without anyone dying (in fact, he bet that Yugi would make it through all of them), while there was no way to win the harbor deathmatch by its rules [[MortonsFork without someone dying]]. While he viewed Death-T as merely a high-stakes test, the harbor deathmatch was nothing more than a deathtrap.
* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor: He's a bit sick with his jokes, but a few aren't as bad.
** NoSenseOfHumor: He's generally a serious person and doesn't crack jokes like Jonouchi does.
* EvilLaugh: Despite being [[TheStoic a reserved individual]], he tends to indulge in this when he bests an opponent. Mind you, he isn't exactly "evil", but the principle still stands.
** One of the most notable examples is during the anime filler's Grand Championship, where Kaiba defeats the resident BigBad after disqualifying him and then laughs like a villain. That's an AntiHero for you!
* FatalFlaw: His obsession for technology. That, and his hostile attitude and pride.
* {{Fiction 500}}: In the dub especially. In both versions of the anime, he casually writes check for $500,000 to pay for a new car, telling the dealer to keep the change as he drives off.
* FlatEarthAtheist: Very much so in the American dub version, but not nearly as bad in the manga and the Japanese anime, where he wasn't disbelieving of the magical events occurring around him as much as he was [[UnusuallyUninterestingSight disinterested and unconcerned]] about them.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic.
* FreudianExcuse: Adopted by an [[AbusiveParents abusive father]] who taught him that being a failure in anything, even losing games, means you don't deserve to live. Lost everything but his brother in unknown circumstances before that. He never even knew his real parents.
* FriendToAllChildren: Shockingly. Mokuba explains the reason Seto works so hard for [=KaibaCorp=] is to achieve his dream of a Kaiba Land to bring happiness to children. N'aww.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Gozaburo wanted Kaiba to be as ruthless as him, and view everyone as a possible threat. You have to wonder how he saw that working out, although he probably didn't expect Kaiba to oust him before leaving high school.
* GreenEyedMonster: Very much so. After his public defeat during Death-T, he doesn't stop at ''anything'' to get his title back from Yugi.
* {{Griefer}}: Has one of these moments during the Battle City semi-final 4-way match. See RefugeInAudacity.
* GrumpyBear: Initially a FauxAffablyEvil StepfordSmiler and sadistic to boot, but after development, he is normally the least gleeful of the main cast.
* GuileHero: Though not nearly as much as Dark Yugi, he has his moments, particularly in their tag-Death Duel against Mask of Light & Darkness (Lumis and Umbra in the anime dub) when he gets them to begin fighting with one another.
* HeelFaceTurn: Sort of. He stops being evil and regularly helps the heroes. However, he ''never'' stops being a gigantic jackass.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Buried deep in the first half of the manga, where he almost comes across as evil as Dark Marik or Dark Bakura due to his abuse under Gouzaburo. After this, he only acts kind to Mokuba but doesn't come off as a complete monster.
* HonestCorporateExecutive: Despite jokes thanks to the Abridged Series, and in contrast to his adoptive father.
* IcyBlueEyes
* ImageSong: From the 4Kids anime dub's Pyramid of Light soundtrack, ''You're Not Me''.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Keeps the hammer from dropping on a gun with a Duel Monsters card in the manga, throws them at people to disable them in the anime. He also uses his briefcase as a blunt instrument a few times.
* IneffectualLoner: Because who needs friends when you're Seto Kaiba?
--> "Yugi, do you expect me to forget about the past, grin like an idiot, and join forces with you? Don't make me laugh. To this day, your stupid friendship disgusts me!"
-->"Friendship is for fools! Didn't I tell you I duel alone? Depending on others is for the weak, Yugi! ''My'' future is in ''my own two hands''! So keep your friendships to ''yourself''! I'm not interested in having any ''pals'' to slow me down!"
* InformedAbility: In the manga. Despite claiming to be an expert at all games, we only ever see Kaiba play Duel Monsters and chess. The only things that tells us of his prowess at gaming are his high scores on every arcade machine at the Domino Arcade.
** Also, Kaiba's deck is ''ridiculously'' overpowered, containing 3 Blue-Eyes White Dragons, Obelisk the Tormentor (temporarily) and the Crush Card Virus. It's actually pretty satisfying seeing him get beaten by Yugi, who relies mainly on skill to win.
* InsufferableGenius
* IShallTauntYou: Comes across as a BadassBoast.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Because it's all about Seto Kaiba. He even claims he designed the tournament at Battle City so that ''he'' would be the final victor.
* JapanesePronouns: "Boku" in his first manga appearance (and in the first episode of the anime) and "ore" for the rest of his appearances, from Death-T on.
* {{Jerkass}}: Initially worse, but now is just hard to get along with since he has a major SmugSuper complex.
** JerkJock: Basically has this attitude towards games and especially Duel Monsters. You either prove yourself a WorthyOpponent for him, or you're a pathetic scrub who doesn't even deserve the two minutes of his time it would take for him to beat you. He was even this way to Mokuba before his HeelFaceTurn.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: As viciously hostile as Kaiba is to the main characters, when push comes to shove, he'll help them out (most of the time). Just don't expect him to be buddy-buddy with them any time before, during or after the fact.
** JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Mostly during the Battle City finals. He was prepared to RageQuit the tournament and blow up the island with everyone else still on it (well, he was leaving the airship for them, but still), but Mokuba and Ishizu convinced him to put aside his petty grudge with Yugi and help him defeat Marik.
* KickTheDog: Does this a few times. Usually to Jonouchi. In the anime, exemplified by all those times they put him in a dog suit... (Jonouchi, not Kaiba.)
* [[KingOfGames King of Card Games]]: As previously stated, the story [[InformedAbility informs us]] of his prowess in gaming which rivals Yugi (a straightforward KingOfGames), with his high scores on every arcade machine at the Domino Arcade, which are connected to every arcade machine in Japan. But even then, the game that he takes the most interest in and shows the most skill is ''Magic & Wizards''/''Duel Monsters'', in spirit of that game defining his introductory chapters of the manga.
* LargeAndInCharge: He was actually made taller beyond his initial manga appearance to reflect the rest of his character.
* [[PlayfulHacker Leet Haxor Skillz]]: As shown in the Duel Monsters anime, when he broke into Pegasus' database.
* LightEmUp: His main cards, namely the Blue-Eyes and [=XYZ=] cards, are Light attribute.
** LightIsNotGood: And after Death-T, not completely evil either.
** YinYangBomb: But he still uses lots of [[CastingAShadow Dark]] monsters like Giant Germ, La Jinn, Saggi the Dark Clown, and even uses Chaos Emperor Dragon. However, his LightEmUp LightIsNotGood aspects are stronger to contrast Dark Yugi's CastingAShadow DarkIsNotEvil.
* MagicVersusScience: The Technology to Yugi's Magic.
* ManipulativeBastard: On occasion. Really shows it off against Mask of Light and Mask of Darkness (Lumis and Umbra in the dub).
* {{Munchkin}}: He'll do what he can to claim victory, no matter the cost.
* {{Narcissist}}: In appearance only. In reality, creator Kazuki Takahashi claimed in an interview he [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex presents this image to try and combat his severe self-hatred after Gozaburo's death]].
* NewTransferStudent: His manner of introduction, except in the second anime adaptation.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Although he's an asshole to everyone else, Kaiba treats his employees with cold, polite professionalism. For him, that's being downright civil.
* NobleDemon
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: His rivalry with Yugi counts as this. He even says this nearly word-for-word in the manga spin-off (of debatable canocity to the main manga, but still) ''Manga/YuGiOhR''.
** When Dark Yugi loses to Raphael in the Doma FillerArc of the anime, he goes into a fit of rage.
* OnlySaneMan: Dub example, subverted. He thinks there's a logical explanation for the mystical adventures, but really, he's completely skeptical and denies a deeper meaning behind it.
* OrphanageOfFear: May not have been that bad, but he ''did'' feel compelled to win his way out in a game of chess (in the manga, he even cheated to do so). Odds were that the others weren't very friendly towards him or his brother. Many of them were bullies.
* PapaWolf: To Mokuba.
* PerpetualFrowner: When he's not a SmugSmiler, which is an improvement to his StepfordSmiler and SlasherSmile he used to put on. He's like an old rotten tomato.
* PetTheDog: Even at his worst (early manga antagonist), he seemed to adore children and wanted to give a safe and fun place for orphans to forget about their troubles.
* PowerEqualsRarity: The epitome of this trope. Prides himself on his collection in both respects, and cannot accept the thought of a duelist he deems mediocre owning any rare and powerful cards, and [[CircularReasoning rather circularly]], that anyone who plays weak monsters isn't a serious duelist. The 4Kids dub of the Duel Monsters anime also makes it his motto before his defeat to Yugi where he claims "Cards Are Power".
* {{Pride}}: Seto Kaiba's ego is his worst enemy some days. This is best exemplified by his use of the game-ending cards Last Turn[[note]]: a card which decides the outcome of the duel on a battle between two monsters[[/note]] and Final Attack Orders[[note]]in the show, it forces both players to choose only three cards to keep in their deck[[/note]], assuming Blue-Eyes would be enough to overpower anything. Naturally, he loses in both cases because he was overpowered.
** Last Turn was actually more about breaking through to Mokuba by showing him the Blue-Eyes. Had he used his Different Dimension Dragon instead, he would have tied with Noah (and had Noah not cheated earlier, Last Turn wouldn't have been necessary.)
* PromotionToParent: To Mokuba.
* TheProudElite: Rich, intelligent, master of Duel Monsters (and chess; in the manga, games in general), and won't let anyone forget it.
* PunnyName: "Seto Kaiba" is awfully similar to a Japanese word for student council: [[AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil "seitokai"]]. Appropriate, as he can resemble some of the more negative examples of a haughty StudentCouncilPresident.
* TheQuietOne
* RageQuit: After losing to Yugi in Battle City and failing to resolve [[AbusiveParents his daddy issues]], he decides the best way to get rid of the problem is to sink the Duel Tower to the bottom of the ocean before Yugi and Marik even have their duel. Luckily, Mokuba talks him out of it and he decides to help Yugi win the match (and ''then'' he blows it up).
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives them constantly; in the Virtual World FillerArc his one to Noah lasts for half an episode and is awesome. In the Doma FillerArc, his one to Alister marked the first time someone that arc had finally shut the Doma guys up about the whole "healing the world through extermination thing."
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Jonouchi (one of two) and Dark Yugi's red.
* RefugeInAudacity: Constantly pesters Jonouchi during Battle City, especially during the four-way duel, for not being able to hold his own as a duelist (in spite of evidence to the contrary), and insists that he has to stand up on his own. Moments later during the latter, when Jonouchi counters a move from Dark Marik, Kaiba interferes with one of his own cards, effectively helping Marik and screwing over Jonouchi, with the former's monster surviving the battle after all. Of course, it's more likely than anything that Kaiba is either [[CombatPragmatist playing the entire field in order to ensure his opponent will be Yugi]], or he's just being a gigantic {{troll}} towards Jonouchi.
** If he could manage it, it's almost certainly both.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Of one of the six priests of the pharaoh's court, Priest Seto.
* ReincarnationRomance: According to WordOfGod:
-->"''Reluctantly, I cut short the episode with Priest Seto and Kisara [due to editorial deadlines], which is something I still regret, because, as all of you guessed, it is the defining episode for the relationship between present-day Kaiba and his Blue-Eyes White Dragon.''" [[note]]The rest of the liner notes are too long to post, but basically he describes how Kisara's death at the hands of Akhenaden would have led to a subplot where Seto betrays the pharaoh and goes off on his own with the intent to avenge her demise. But apparently the series was starting to get less popular and the editors wanted Kazuki Takahashi to rush to finish the story, so his grand plans for the above were cut short.[[/note]]
* TheResenter: Clearly he dislikes Yugi, who always wants to make him a better person. The same goes for Yugi's friends, too.
* TheRival: Yugi's main rival. And we're talking the hostile type of rivalry.
** RivalsTeamUp: Usually when he does so, it's because he's facing off against a common enemy.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Wore his school uniform during his first appearance, before it was replaced with his Kaiba Corporation white-collared outfit for the Death-T arc. Averted in the present (unlike a certain rival of his),
** In terms of the anime, played straight in the first episode and flashbacks, where he is seen wearing his white school uniform while doing things like causing his stepfather to "commit suicide" (in the anime he didn't really do this, he put himself into virtual reality) and walking away from his first monetary triumph in a prototype of his first BadassLongcoat. Guess he did those things after school.
* ScrewDestiny: Notably in his duel against Ishizu. He's more of a believer in free will than in fate.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: Trope coined by his character in ''[[WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries Abridged]]'', and used by him throughout the original series.
* SelfMadeOrphan: Killed his adoptive father in the manga. In the anime, Gozaburo manages to escape and makes a comeback as a FillerVillain...and is killed when Kaiba and the others leave him trapped in his self-destructing virtual world.
* SelfMadeMan: Believes he is one.
* ShipTease: With Yugi Mutou, Katsuya Jonouchi/Joey Wheeler (especially in the Abridged Series), and of course, the Blue Eyes White Dragon.
* TheSmartGuy: Whenever he sides with the gang in the anime's {{FillerArc}}s.
* SmugSmiler: So very much.
* SmugSnake: Prior to his HeelFaceTurn.
* SmugSuper: Post HeelFaceTurn.
* TheSpock: Not only is he intensely logical, he has the emotional range of a brick.
* TheStoic: Particularly in the anime.
* StopHavingFunGuys: Invoked to the max. Jounouchi even lampshades this near the conclusion of their rematch in the anime.
** In fact, he was inspired by a real life StopHavingFunGuy Kazuki Takahashi's friend met. Said friend asked him if he could teach him how to play a card game, to which he replied, "Hmph! Come back when you've collected 10,000 cards."
* StrawNihilist: Especially in the manga, has a couple of Nietzsche-themed [[HannibalLecture lectures]] to anyone whom doesn't share his mentality and is seen reading Nietzsche's ''Also Sprach Zarathustra'' in the first episode of the anime.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: No denying that.
* TeenGenius: He wins at almost virtually every game except Duel Monsters.
* TooCleverByHalf: He considers his deck to be unbeatable. He's stacked it with really strong cards. He executes his strategies with care. And still, he wonders where he goes wrong.
* TransferStudentUniforms: An all-white one in his first appearances in the Toei anime (he wore the normal one in his first appearance in the manga, with the white one being his Kaiba Corp CEO outfit during his stint as main antagonist). Played for creepiness.
* TrashTalk: He seems to do this to a lot of people. Specifically, to those he particularly dislikes. But from the looks of it, it's the monsters of Wrath and Envy talking.
* TroubledButCute: Deep inside, he really wants to be more sociable, but due to his belief that "every single one of us in this world is alone", he's unable to do so. He also claims that he never needs help from anyone. Last of all, he doesn't think anyone can be trusted. A certain somebody must've planted all that in his head.
* TsurimeEyes
* UsedToBeASweetKid: He really was, when he was much younger.
* UngratefulBastard: No matter how many times they save his ass, he'll never be part of the TrueCompanions.
* UnstoppableRage: He really has no control over his rage when he's playing Duel Monsters, especially when he's facing off against Yugi. Often, this renders him vulnerable, since he's unable to think straight. And whenever someone tries to make him feel better, he doesn't pay any attention to ''anything'' anyone has to say.
* VillainousBSOD: Following the first episode of the Duel Monsters anime adaptation, after his defeat to Yugi he starts to question his motivations and goals as he realizes power alone isn't enough to beat him - enough for him to idiotically leave his company and his little brother unattended (in the manga, he was in a coma at the hands of Yugi's "Mind Crush" Penalty Game during Death-T).
* [[WhenSheSmiles When He Smiles]]: He has a few rare moments where he genuinely smiles, mostly in his childhood.
** ''WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries'' parodies this by saying a puppy dies every time he smiles.
* TheWorfBarrage: Despite being feared as a card that can singlehandedly ensure his victory, his Crush Card ''doesn't'' work more often than it does. He tries to use it eight times throughout the series, but only gets it off three times. And those three times, Yugi worked around it and Ishizu [[BatmanGambit flipped its effect to her advantage]], and they lost for entirely unrelated reasons.
** During anime {{FillerArc}}s: When he tried to use it against Kogoro, it was destroyed, since Kogoro had assumed the appearance of Jinzo. During his duel with Willa Mette in the manga spin-off R, Mette used a spell card to prevent Kaiba's Crush Card from activating. Thus, the only times Crush Card actually worked is in his duel with Jonouchi and Amelda, the first was an anime filler match and Jonouchi ''still'' put up a good fight, and the second it only helped because he fused it with [[DeusExMachina Fang of Critias]], in the meantime Amelda still stopped him from using it and it remained on the field useless. Given the consequences when it DOES go off though, it's understandable that people want to counter it so effectively.
* TheWorfEffect: His Shadow Game duel against Pegasus is to remind fans just how severely Pegasus' Millennium Eye rigs the match in his favor, turning Kaiba's moves against him left and right. The cast lampshades this in the English anime, noting Pegasus likely had them watch the duel as intimidation.
* WorldsGreatestWarrior: Shortly before Death-T in the manga, Yugi and Jounouchi go to an arcade and check the high scores on a number of machines. Every single one has the top scorer's initials as "KAI." In fact, in the manga, it's a plot point that Kaiba's reputation as the world's best gamer was a big reason for how he held so much sway in his company.
* WorthyOpponent: To Yugi.
* YouShallNotPass: Anime-only; he and his Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon do it to Zorc in the Memory World RPG, buying time and keeping the GodOfEvil from reaching the city.

[[folder:Mokuba Kaiba]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mokuba_manga_portal_8093.png
'''Mokuba Kaiba (海馬 モクバ; ''Kaiba Mokuba'')'''
--> Voiced by: Katsue Miwa (Japanese Toei anime), Creator/JunkoTakeuchi (Duel Monsters), Tara Sands (English), CarrieKeranen (English, season five onwards)

Seto's little brother and his main fan. In contrast to his brother's obsession with Duel Monsters, Mokuba has an obsession for Capsule Monster Chess. He is initially portrayed as a spoiled brat, with vindictive and malevolent behavior. He was named champion at Capsule Monster Chess, but cheated in many of the games he played. His negative traits are partly credit to the neglect he gets from his older brother, whom he desired to prove his worth to. Though still somewhat of a "brat", his behavior improved as he befriended Yugi Mutou and his companions and as Seto grew to love and appreciate him. In the anime, he is made to be much friendlier right off the bat.

Aside from his brief unfinished stint playing Duel Monsters against Yugi in Duel Kingdom, the only games he ever played on-panel were Capsule Monster Chess and Russian Roulette Dinner. Can usually be seen either carrying his brother's briefcase or monitoring his brother's tournaments. While Kaiba is openly disdainful of Yugi and his friends, Mokuba gets along with them just fine, though he's still mostly on his brother's side when it comes to the rivalry he has with Yugi.

-----
* AdaptationalHeroism[=/=]TookALevelInKindness: Mokuba is much nicer in the second anime than he is in the manga.
* AdaptationalWimp: But in turn, he loses his [[EnfantTerrible villainous characterization]] and his [[BadassDecay badass traits]] in exchange for being nothing more than Kaiba's MoralityPet and [[DistressedDude gets kidnapped]] [[TheLoad a lot]].
* BigBrotherWorship: He adores his brother, even when he's being a jerk to the other characters.
* {{Brainwashed}}: By Noah in the Virtual World FillerArc of the anime.
* CompressedHair: When he challenges Yugi during the Duelist Kingdom arc, he's wearing a disguise in which he manages to cram his three pounds or so of hair underneath a cap.
* CreepyChild: When first introduced - the first thing he does in the series is challenge Yugi to a game of Capsule Monster Chess... with the condition being that if Yugi lost, Mokuba would ''cut his fingers off.'' Second time you see him, he tries to poison Yugi - and succeeds in poisoning Jonouchi. It's only when his brother gets more evil and unhinged that this wears off and he actually starts being good.
* DesignatedVictim[=/=]DistressedDude: In the anime adaptation, he gets kidnapped or is otherwise endangered at ''least'' once a season, usually more.
* DisguisedInDrag: In the Virtual Heroes FillerArc of the anime, he switches outfits with his virtual counterpart Princess Adina [[DangerouslyGenreSavvy to get himself kidnapped in her place and be taken to where Seto was.]]
* TheDragon: During Death-T, he is this to his older brother.
* EasilyForgiven: Less so in the second anime, more so in the manga, where he comes off as being almost bad as Seto was, until he decides to nearly kill him, which does earn him some sympathy.
** In turn, he really seems to be this towards Noah in the anime's Virtual World FillerArc.
* HeelFaceTurn: Early in the series he hated Yugi just as much as Seto did, and in the manga tried to kill him. He eventually loosened up.
* JerkassFacade: In the manga after his HeelFaceTurn, he still displayed bits of a Jerkass attitude not unlike his brother, but as opposed to Seto it's clearly an act. The driving point of this is at the end of Duelist Kingdom where he mocks Yugi and the others, then almost immediately softens up when he sees that they have no ride back to Japan, asking his brother to let them come along in their helicopter (as cramp as it was).
* KnightOfCerebus: Yes, ''Mokuba's'' first appearance in the manga (as a boy who wanted to cut off Yugi's fingers no less) caused the story to become darker and more arc-based.
* MoralityPet: To Kaiba.
* [[OrphanageOfFear Orphanage Of Relentless Bullying]]
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: During the early manga and the Toei anime.
* SmugSnake: During his time as villain, he was an even bigger example of this then Kaiba--he had all of his arrogance, but none of his skills.
* TraumaSwing: Spent his first day in the orphanage on a playground swing, where only Seto regarded him.
* YoungAndInCharge: As Battle City Commissioner.

[[folder:Ryuji Otogi (Duke Devlin)]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otogimanga_1243.png
'''Ryuji Otogi (御伽 龍児; ''Otogi Ryuuji'') ([[DubNameChange Duke Devlin]])'''
--> Voiced by: Ryo Naitou (JP), Marc Thompson (EN)

-->''"When determining victory or failure in a game, don't you use your opponent's weaknesses to win it?"''

The son of the owner to Kame Game's rival game shop, the Black Crown, and an expert at Bar Bet games. His dad lost a Shadow Game to Yugi's grandpa, which disfigured his face horribly. He was raised to take revenge upon Yugi's grandpa by beating Yugi in a game and taking his Millennium Puzzle, declaring himself the King of Games. Unfortunately for his dad, he eventually becomes good friends with Yugi instead. He's the creator of Dungeon Dice Monsters (DDD in the manga) and (in the anime only) one of Pegasus' business partners and fans, and added Duel Monster creatures to his game as a tribute.

In the anime, instead of being raised as a tool of vengeance by his father, he has a real grudge against Yugi over Pegasus' loss causing their business deals to stagnate, but he gets over it after the game hits it big. His personality in the anime is also radically different from his personality in the original manga. As far as his game creation goes, unlike the manga where DDD was a completely separate game, in the anime he seemed to have based Dungeon Dice Monsters off as a spin-off to Duel Monsters, incorporating many Duel Monsters creatures in the game.

In the manga, aside from a one-off mention of liking Duel Monsters, he is never seen playing the Duel Monsters card game - we only see him playing "bar bet" games and Dungeon Dice Monsters/DDD, though he shows knowledge and interest in all games regardless. In the anime however, he is a big fan of Pegasus and is shown to play the game a few times. The first time he duels, he used a deck of cards randomly drawn from several booster packs. His true deck uses many dice effects, and many of the monsters emulate the ones from Dungeon Dice Monsters. His trump card is Orgoth the Relentless.

-----
* AbusiveParents: In the manga. [[MonsterClown His dad]] raised him as a tool of vengeance and was seen whipping him after he found out he lost to Yugi in a game of Four Aces.
* AdaptationExplanationExtrication: The Black Clown's clown theme and Ryuji's partial clown make-up makes much more sense in the manga.
* AlliterativeName: In the dub.
* [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Arrogant Gamer Guy]]: Initially appears as this in the manga, but ultimately subverted.
* AscendedExtra: The filler arcs were kind to him in the anime, giving him more screentime and allowing him to duel a couple times, while in the manga he never got any such action after his introductory arc (essentially his gaming skills go to waste, and he's PutOnABus during the Millennium World arc until the Ceremonial Battle).
* {{Badass}}: Though he doesn't get to duel as often as the other characters, he is still an excellent game master and a perfectly competent duelist. He also uses dice as a weapon when attacking people.
** BadassBoast: Quite often when he challenges Yugi to Dungeon Dice Monsters, though it gets exaggerated in the dub.
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: Quite literally, he challenges Yugi to a game of his own creation which Yugi barely had any understanding of at first. But Yugi eventually managed to grasp the rules and turned the tables on him.
* BigBad: In the anime's heavily modified filler-version of the DDM arc.
* TheCasanova: The anime version of the character, where he makes it a point to be accompanied by his fangirl cheerleaders and also pursues Jonouchi's little sister.
** In the more serious original manga incarnation, the familiar Bakura fangirls from the Monster World arc swoon over Ryuji during his first appearance at school, but he neither cares nor drags them around with him to stroke his ego. He also doesn't show any romantic feelings towards Jonouchi's sister (though he did say Mai was hot at one point during Battle City).
* DefeatMeansFriendship[=/=]EasilyForgiven: Even after all the crap he puts Jonouchi and Yugi through in the anime, Yugi and the gang forgives him, and it's helped when Dungeon Dice Monsters gets commissioned.
** In the manga, he grows to view Yugi as a WorthyOpponent during their battle, and is more than willing to become his friend after he realizes that his father's revenge is going too far and that he doesn't hate the Mutou family as much as his dad does. He even lends a helping hand to Yugi's friends when his father kidnaps Yugi to play the Devil's Board Game.
* DependingOnTheWriter: In the manga, he's a serious character with emotional problems stemming from daddy issues, comparable to Kaiba. In the anime, he's a narcissistic guy who somewhat revels in the attention he gets from girls and after he joins the gang, he forms a comedic duo with Honda for Shizuka's affections.
* TheDragon: To his father, Mr. Clown, in the Dragons, Dice & Dungeons arc of the manga.
** The name Ryuuji [[MeaningfulName literally means]] "dragon child."
* {{Foil}}: Like Yugi, he's the youngest relative of a game shop owner and is an expert at games. Unlike Yugi, he is tall, handsome, but has a horrible relationship with his father and starts off with no friends other than his legion of fangirls, most of which also belonged to Bakura at one point.
* TheGambler: Uses dice as weapons, runs a gamble deck focused on powering up his Orgoth the Relentless, and created the luck-based game of Dungeon Dice Monsters.
** He challenges Jonouchi and Yugi to Bar Bet games in the manga, games with fixed probability that are meant to trick his opponent in a gamble.
* GracefulLoser: Although he gets distraught after being beaten by Dark Yugi in a game of Four Aces, it's played straight after he loses to the regular Yugi in Dungeon Dice, and realizes he doesn't hate nor mind losing to Yugi at all. He was willing to hand the Millennium Puzzle over until his father intervenes.
* GreenEyes
* HeelFaceTurn: He ultimately betrays his father's rampage of revenge towards the Mutou family and becomes Yugi's friend instead.
** In the anime adaptation, he decides to stop being a jerk to the main group after losing to Dark Yugi and fully befriends the group after his DDM gets commissioned by Pegasus's company.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Dice, which he regularly tosses at people who try to catch them.
* JapanesePronouns: "Ore" in the manga, and "boku" in the anime.
* {{Jerkass}}: In the anime, he starts off almost as bad as Kaiba was pre-Mind Crush. He gets over it when Yugi wins.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Shown heavily during his arc in the manga. Despite making an ass out of himself when he first tries to humiliate Jonouchi with his fixed games and is seemingly determined to fulfill his father's dream of revenge and ruining Yugi's life, he's not that bad of a guy deep down and really only wants a worthy opponent in games. After slowly getting to like Yugi more and more throughout their game of DDD, when his father smashes the Millennium Puzzle, Ryuji looks at him with disgust and helps Yugi pick up the pieces before continuing their battle. His father, needless to say, was astonished by his kindness.
* KingOfGames: In the sense that he was raised for the sole purpose of rivaling the Mutou family at gaming, and he's ''really'' good and knowledgeable about them. In-universe, he wants to ''gain'' the title "King of Games."
* LoveTriangle: With Honda over Shizuka. Doesn't apply in the manga, however, since he's a much more serious character and less narcissistic about being popular with the ladies. That and both characters don't show romantic feelings towards Shizuka in the manga.
* OhCrap: Repeatedly in his DDM game with Yugi.
* PutOnABus: In the manga, his character is suddenly dropped during the Millennium World arc, [[TheBusCameBack only to reappear again to accompany his friends for the Ceremonial Battle]]. It's the same for the anime continuity, but at least he got to replace Ryou Bakura for a handful of long filler arcs.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Very judgmental variations of this trope were used at Yugi throughout their Dungeon Dice Monsters match.
* ShipTease: With Honda (especially in the Abridged Series) and Shizuka. He gets some interaction with the former in the manga after his inital arc (ThoseTwoGuys in the anime), and has a crush on the latter within the anime version.
* SinsOfOurFathers: His father lost a Shadow Game to Yugi's grandpa, and he wanted Otogi to beat Yugi in a game and take his Puzzle.
* SixthRanger: After the DDM arc, he joins with the main group somewhat.
* SmugSnake: In the dub anime during his Dungeon Dice Monsters game with Yugi, he's completely confident that Yugi is just a glorified cheater who doesn't stand a chance against him since he ''made'' the game and Yugi is an amateur who doesn't have any idea of proper strategy. Yugi's repeated use of DidntSeeThatComing against him shakes him, but he brushes such instances off as luck. He mellows out once he loses.
* TheStoic: In the original manga.
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Honda/Tristan. Again, only in the anime.
* TookALevelInKindness: After losing his Dungeon Dice Monsters match against Yugi, he became a LOT easier to get along with.
* {{Tsundere}}: In the manga. It's not like I'm helping you because we're friends now or anything, d-don't get me wrong. [[PowerOfFriendShip I'm just tagging along to see where Yugi's strength comes from]]...that's all/I just owe you guys a favor, that's all!
* [[YoureNothingWithoutYourPhlebotinum You're Nothing Without Your Millennium Puzzle]]: In the manga, he initially believes Yugi is nothing without the Millennium Puzzle giving him the expert gaming personality after his connection to Dark Yugi is cut off, and that he didn't deserved to be the King of Games because of it.

[[folder:Mai Kujaku (Mai Valentine)]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maimanga_4684.png
'''Mai Kujaku (孔雀 舞; ''Kujaku Mai'') ([[DubNameChange Mai Valentine]])'''
--> Voiced by: Creator/HaruhiTerada (Japanese), Creator/MeganHollingshead (English Season 1-3) / Bella Hudson (English Season 4-5)

One of the best duelists around. She once worked as a casino dealer before picking up the Duel Monsters card game, and became used to depending on only herself until she met Yugi and his friends in the Duelist Kingdom arc. Though she isn't around in every chapter/episode, she's mostly a good guy and helps the heroes out frequently.

She uses a Harpie deck in the Duelist Kingdom arc, and mixes it up with some Amazons in the Battle City arc.

-----
* ActionGirl: She is a genuinely good duelist, even though she ends up [[DesignatedVictim getting put up and losing against the most important and/or powerful duelists in almost any given arc]], but never without a fight.
** DarkActionGirl: During the anime versions's DOMA FillerArc, after she becomes corrupted by the Orichalcos and starts working for Dartz.
* AmazonBrigade: Her deck, which includes her Harpies and some actual Amazons.
* BadassNormal: No Millennium Item or connections with ancient Egypt, but she's skilled enough to make it into the finals of Duelist Kingdom and the top eight in Battle City.
* BeMyValentine: In the dub. The "Mai" adds to it as a pun.
* BeautyBrainsAndBrawn: The Brawn.
* BikerBabe: She shows herself to be adept at riding a motorcycle in the DOMA FillerArc.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The Blonde.
* BreakTheCutie: During the Battle City arc, when she fights against Dark Marik in his really, ''really'' painful Shadow Game and suffers through his Penalty Game.
* BrokenBird: In the beginning, she's an ex-LonelyRichKid who had lived by and relied on herself since her parents had passed on, acting cynical and disenchanted until Jounouchi calls her out on her treatment of her opponents, Yugi wins back the star chips she lost due to the Player Killer, and (in the anime) Anzu duels her for Yugi's sake. After she defrosts, she reverts because Dark Marik put her into a coma where she was trapped in an hourglass, slowly forgetting everyone who ever loved her (only in the anime - in the manga, she was being eaten by scarabs and she actually managed to come back from that experience emotionally stable). Then, she has recurring nightmares about the experience. This leads to why she winds up joining the villains for DOMA, because they have a magic thing called the Orichalcos that helps her cope.
* ChristmasCake: Actually, [[CelibateHero by her own choice]]. She ''did'' have a HopelessSuitor in an anime filler episode and blew him off, defeating him in a duel when he wouldn't give up.
* CompressedHair: She can somehow keep all of her hair into a normal-sized motorcycle helmet.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as the older and more experienced friend to the main characters, as well as Shizuka/Serenity.
* DarkChick: In Doma's FiveBadBand.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Throughout Duelist Kingdom.
* DemotedToExtra: After Doma, she's relegated to just making a couple of silent cameos for the remainder of the anime. In the manga, Battle City was her last appearance, and leaves the story a bit more happy compared to the anime.
* DesignatedVictim: Silly Mai, this is a {{Shonen}} manga, girls at your time can't win fights yet.
* DeusAngstMachina[=/=]TraumaCongaLine: From Dark Marik's Penalty Game to the anime's Doma.
* DistractedByTheSexy: An implied reason for her choice of outfits is to try to distract her opponents.
** She also uses her looks to sneak Tristan and Tea past the security guard at Duelist Kingdom, and to trick Rex Raptor into giving up his deluxe room on the cruise to her.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Developed a taste for black leather after joining the Doma {{cult}}.
* {{Fanservice}}: She and her monsters are this.
** BareYourMidriff: Several of her outfits.
** MsFanservice: She wears a ''corset''.
** OfCorsetsSexy: Wears this.
* GamerChick
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Does this to Jonouchi during Battle City after his BrainwashedAndCrazy period.
* HarpingOnAboutHarpies: Her signature monsters, and they're ladies.
* IdiotBall: Gets a lot of this.
** Has a run-in with it at the end of her duel with Marik. Despite having the means to win the duel[[note]]Dark Marik only had one monster in Attack position with 500 ATK and 1050 Life Points, Mai had Cyber Harpie with 1800 ATK[[/note]] by just declaring an attack, she chooses to try and beat Dark Marik with the Sun Dragon Ra, despite the fact she has no idea how it works and a first-hand demonstration in the previous duel that using the card is highly dangerous.
** It happens again in the anime's Doma FillerArc: when she duels Raphael, Mai attempts to use Jonouchi's Helmos card despite not being one of the three chosen duelists. [[CurbStompBattle It doesn't go well for her.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: In the very beginning of the series, she's pretty aggressive, sarcastic, and a bit mean-spirited, though significantly less so than other duelists like Haga or Ryuzaki.
** JerkassHasAPoint: In her first duel with Jonouchi, she points out that even if he and Yugi are friends, there can only ever be one champion, and they'd have to face each other in order to win. He also has to learn to step out from Yugi's shadow and duel on his own, and hopes that his defeat teaches that to him. And she's completely right except about the "defeat" part since he beats her.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The dark to Anzu and Shizuka's light.
* LonelyRichKid: In her backstory, at least in the anime. We see her as a little girl, all alone in a BigFancyHouse...
* MeaningfulName: Mai Kujaku means "dancing peacock."
* MindRape: By Marik during Battle City. She was put into an hourglass filled with scarabs that slowly devoured her body, and she would have died after a set amount of time (in the anime, it's less nightmare-ish and more emotional - the longer she was in the hourglass, the more memories of her friends she would lose). In the anime, this lead to a HeroicBSOD and a FaceHeelTurn in the Doma filler arc.
* MoreThanMindControl: How FillerVillain Dartz got her to serve him.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After she beats Jounouchi in the Doma filler, causing him to lose his soul.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: She's a very good duelist and strategist, but has the misfortune to be on the same team as Yugi and Kaiba (who have connections to the nameless pharaoh and some of the most powerful cards around) and ends up going up against [[BigBad Dark]] [[TheSociopath Marik]] in the Battle City semifinals.
* ParentalAbandonment: In the anime, her parents died when she was little and left her alone to rely on herself.
* PunnyName: In English.
* PsychicPowers: She pretends she has these at the start of Duelist Kingdom with her "aroma tactics", which involves knowing what her cards are without looking at them because of having them sprayed with various perfumes. This backfires on her in her duel with Jounouchi when he figures it out, however, and she drops them later on.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Jounouchi's red. (One of three)
* {{Sexophone}}: In the anime, new music always played whenever she showed up inDuelist Kingdom, and ocassionally in Battle City. Stopped in Doma due to her change of sides.
* ShipTease: With Jonouchi.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In ''The Sacred Cards'', a video game adaptation of Season 2-3, she duels Kaiba in the Battle City finals instead of Marik.
* ThighHighBoots: Wore these while she was {{Brainwashed}} by Dartz during the Doma arc.
* {{Tsundere}}: Shifts from a Type A to a Type B over the course of Duelist Kingdom.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Jounouchi. The anime didn't do anything to help resolve this.

[[folder:Sugoroku Mutou (Solomon Muto)]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grandpa_7502.jpg
'''Sugoroku Mutou (武藤 双六; ''Mutou Sugoroku'') ([[DubNameChange Solomon Muto]])'''
--> Voiced by: Creator/TakeshiAono (Japanese Toei anime), Tadashi Miyazawa (Duel Monsters), Creator/MaddieBlaustein (English)

Yugi's grandfather and former game master, who gave Yugi his famous Millennium Puzzle as a present, which he had recovered from the tomb of Pharaoh Atem in his youth. He was once a gaming master who traveled all over the world to try all sorts of games and win them all, vowing that if he ever lost a game, he'd "trade in his tux for denim overalls, and collect years instead of chips". In the present, [[CrowningMomentOfFunny he's a denim overall-wearing old man]] who owns a game shop called Kame Game, where Yugi and his friends get several of the games they play. Sugoroku currently lives in the Kame Game Shop with Yugi and his mother.

In the anime only, since he gave his original Duel Monsters deck to Yugi, he uses an Ancient deck, with cards that emulate an explorer (the opponent) entering cursed and booby-trapped ruins, and gamble cards. His trump card is Ancient Dragon.

-----
* AdventurerArchaeologist: Used to be one - of the gaming variety. He sought out Pharaoh Atem's tomb because it was said to have been the Shrine of the Shadow Games (funnily enough, during the Memory World RPG, his past life is revealed to be the one that rigged his tomb with traps and Shadow Games to begin with).
** His deck in the Duel Monsters anime plays straight to that.
* AwesomeButImpractical: In the Duel Monsters anime, his Ancient Dragon requires a half-dozen cards and several turns to prepare to summon, but once out it's a 2800 point beatstick that destroys all enemy monsters when it beats one in battle, and when destroyed in any way returns at the end of the turn as long as Ancient City is on the field. Hawkins even notes the reason Grandpa is so proud of it is that its cards are so rare and it's so hard to summon, no one else they know has ever done it.
** Similarly his Exodia deck, to some extent. The dialogue about the Exodia cards implies there are little to no card shuffling tactics to gather the cards more efficiently. Also, Sugoroku only has one of each card in his deck. However, drawing all five cards is an instant win.
* BadassGrandpa: When it comes to gaming anyway. He used to be straight-up {{Badass}} all-around during his younger years as a legendary gambler.
* BewareTheNiceOnes - He's a kind old man right now, but back in his younger days he was willing to play the Devil's Board Shadow Game with Ryuji Otogi's father and caused the man to age halfway to his lifespan. Presumably, much like Dark Yugi early in the manga, he wasn't willing to back down or lose a game even if it meant fucking up another person's life.
* CallForward: Before his expedition into the tomb of the Shadow Games, he says that if he ever loses a game he'd trade in his tux for overalls and collect years instead of chips. Apparently he lost at some point.
* CoolOldGuy
* DirtyOldMan: Early in the manga.
* DistressedDude: He's kidnapped in the Death-T arc of the manga and first anime, kidnapped in the first episode of the second anime, and finally trapped in a video tape (manga)/Duel Monsters card (anime). Let's just say the old man's been through a lot.
** In the second anime, he also gets held hostage by Vivian Wong (granted, she threw his back out of place, but same principle) and even gets kidnapped during his guest appearance on the first spin-off of the second anime, ''Anime/YuGiOhGX''.
* DubNameChange: For whatever reason, the games in which he appears refer to him as Truesdale for...whatever reason.
* KingOfGames: He's an old game master that taught his grandson (the person with the in-universe title "King of Games") his stuff.
* TheMentor: In the anime only, to Jonouchi, whom he taught how to play Duel Monsters. In the manga, it's assumed that this is the man where Yugi gained all of his gaming knowledge.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: Though given how short Yugi is, it may well be genetic.
* OldMaster: Was a big gamer/gambler like his grandson in his youth. In the anime, he gets to play Duel Monsters in the KC Grand Prix filler arc.
* TheGambler: Rivaled Dark Yugi during his younger days.
* PaperThinDisguise: In anime filler only - as Mask The Rock. He doesn't even change out of his normal outfit, he just puts on a mask.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Of Siamun Muran, the Pharaoh's vizier.
* RetiredBadass

[[folder:Shadi]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadi_-_justice_3834.png
'''Shadi (シャーディー; ''Shaadii'')'''
--> Voiced by: Creator/KanetoShiozawa (Japanese Toei anime), Creator/NozomuSasaki (Duel Monsters), Creator/WayneGrayson (English)

A mysterious man from Egypt, Shadi was the guardian of ancient Egyptian tombs and the modern day holder of the Millennium Ankh/Key and Scales. He uses the Ankh to enter a person's soul room and redecorate their rooms to control the individual to his liking, and uses the Scales to measure a person's sins via a Weighing of the Soul Shadow Game and punish them as he sees fit. He first makes his appearance in the manga after Yugi's Millennium Puzzle is taken away by Kanekura and acts as the BigBad of the Trial of the Mind arc where he poses a series of Shadow Games onto Yugi as a test.

Throughout the series, he is an emotionless person who only seems to be interested in gathering the Millennium Items.

-----
* AdaptationalHeroism: In the second anime, he's a little more noble than his other portrayals. He doesn't brainwash people like in the other versions, manages to save Honda and Otogi's lives at one point during Battle City, and in the final arc he gets the role Bobassa originally served in the manga, HeroicSacrifice included (though Bobassa reveals himself to, in fact, be Shadi in disguise in the manga).
* TheCameo: He gets one in ''VideoGame/YuGiOhReshefOfDestruction''.
* BigBad: Of the first real arc of the manga. He is not actually ''evil'', but he abides by the Egyptian standards of morality.
* ChekhovsGunman: In the second anime series only, where he doesn't make an appearance until the end of Duelist Kingdom. Until then, he's just a figure from one of Pegasus' paintings. In the manga, the cast recognizes him from the painting as they have met him before.
* TheChessmaster: Hassan in the Pharaoh's Memory World being revealed as Shadi might have been because of Shadi himself interfering with the Shadow RPG to save the Pharaoh. He also seemed to work behind the scenes to get the Pharaoh to the afterlife and destroy the Millennium Items. See TheUnfettered below.
* CompositeCharacter: An odd variation in the Millennium World story, as in the anime version he also serves Bobassa's role, though Bobassa himself still appears, albeit with a drastically different personality than his manga counterpart. It's revealed during his heroic sacrifice that the Manga Bobassa is Shadi in disguise.
* DeadAllAlong: Possibly.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: His eyes always look like this.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the second anime series only, his portrait is briefly shown for the first time in episode 8 of the anime, and once again in episode 28. He finally makes his debut in episode 40. In the manga, since Shadi's arc happened before Duelist Kingdom, it's a CallBack.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Seeing the power of friendship in action practically blows his mind.
* HeroicSacrifice: Played the special NPC Hasan during the Shadow RPG, and ended up shielding the main cast, Atem and his priests from Zorc's Inferno.
* JourneyToTheCenterOfTheMind: He did this a few times with his Millennium Ankh, entering the "Soul Room" of the person of his choice. He's also capable of remodeling said rooms, thus altering that person's personality, up to making them into his puppet.
* MindRape: Oh, can he so totally do this from the inside out.
* MindScrew: Shadi has the reputation for being the most confusing character in the entire franchise thanks to his enigmatic nature and for having four identities associated with him (Child Shadi, Adult Shadi, Hassan and Bobassa).
* OlderAlterEgo: He appears to be capable of this - when Yugi meets him, he appears as an adult man. When Pegasus meets him in Egypt in the manga, he appears as a young boy.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Possibly of priest Shada. Well, at least the names are similar.
** He is actually not Priest Shada. He is a being that pledged loyalty to Pharaoh Akhenamkhanen and swore to protect his son, the next Pharaoh Atem, with his life.
* RiddleMeThis: ALL of his Shadow Games are riddles and puzzles. His ''very existence'' is a riddle.
* StealthHiBye
* TheUnfettered: He commits himself to his mission of assembling the Millennium Items. He kills Kanekura and the man who intended to buy the Millennium Puzzle, temporarily brainwashes Yoshimori and Anzu in order to get Dark Yugi out from the Millennium Puzzle and somewhat manipulates Pegasus.

[[folder:Ishizu Ishtar]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ishizumanga_1519.png
'''Ishizu Ishtar (イシズ・イシュタール; ''Ishizu Ishutaaru'')'''
--> Voiced by: Creator/SumiShimamoto (JP), Karen Neil (EN)

Marik's older sister and Rishid's adoptive sister, she's the owner of the Millennium Tauk, which allows the user to see into the past and future. Ishizu works for the Egyptian government agency, the Supreme Council of Antiquities - presumably to the public, she traveled to Japan's Domino City to oversee the dynastic exhibit, The Art of Egypt, which showcased stone slabs, depicting ka battles, from which the card game ''Magic & Wizards''/''Duel Monsters'' originated. She invited Seto Kaiba to the Domino City Museum to show him the slabs that also depicted the nameless king, who resembled Yugi. She told Kaiba about the three God Cards and tasked him with retrieving them from the Ghouls, through hosting a city-wide ''Duel Monsters'' tournament. To bait the Ghouls into coming, she gave him one of the God cards - "The God of the Obelisk."

With the Millennium Tauk, Ishizu had already predicted Yugi would visit the museum. When Dark Yugi arrived, along with Anzu Mazaki, and saw the slabs depicting the ancient ka battles and also of the pharaoh, she approached him. She told him that a large battle would soon be taking place, and that he must gather the seven Millennium Items to regain his memories.

In the ''Duel Monsters'' card game, she uses a Sand Fairy (Fairy monsters with an Egyptian theme) deck, along with cards that cycle her opponent's cards into the graveyard and her cards into her deck. Her trump card is Reversal of Worlds (Exchange of the Spirit).

----
* AbusiveParents: Her father didn't treat her or her brothers particularly well, and cared more for his duty of guarding the Millennium Items than any of them.
* AdaptationalVillainy: In ''VideoGame/YuGiOhTheDuelistsOfTheRoses'', she's on the side of the Yorkists.
* AlliterativeName: ''I''shizu ''I''shtar.
* BecauseDestinySaysSo: She was so obsessed with following her visions that she threw away a quicker victory against Seto just to achieve the victory she saw. Which fails when Seto manages to defy her visions and defeat her.
* [[BigBrotherInstinct Big Sister Instinct]]: Joins Battle City to try to save her brother.
* BreakTheHaughty: Tries it on Kaiba and to a degree, suffers it herself.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Marik's Cain.
* CombatClairvoyance: Sees into the future to predict her opponent's moves.
* DishingOutDirt[=/=]LightEmUp: She uses Earth-attribute Fairy monsters with a distinct Egyptian design flavor.
* DoNotAdjustYourSet: How she gets Kaiba's attention at the start of the second series anime adaptation.
* {{Foil}}: To Kaiba. They both had abusive fathers (biological in her case, adoptive in Kaiba's), have younger siblings they are protective of, and are part of organizing the Battle City tournament. However, Ishizu looks to the past and believes in destiny through her visions from the Millennium Tauk, where Kaiba looks to the future while being more focused on modern-day technology and, in the English 4Kids dub, is a skeptic about the ancient Egyptian magic going on. This is especially highlighted during their duel in the quarter-finals.
* GracefulLoser: In spite of the fact that it means she's out of the running of confront Marik herself, she takes her defeat to Kaiba rather well. In fact, it brings her hope that the future can be changed and that either Yugi, Jonouchi, or Kaiba can save her brother.
* {{Herald}}: In Battle City.
* JapanesePronouns: Uses "watakushi".
* LadyOfWar: Yeah, she plays a card game instead of leading an army, but she's definitely got this vibe. She's quiet, feminine, and came ''this'' close to kicking Seto Kaiba's arrogant ass.
* [[ManipulativeBastard Manipulative Bitch]]: In her duel with Kaiba, she manipulates every move he makes, even allowing herself to take damage from him, in preparation to flip his strategy back on him. Lampshaded by Dark Marik in the anime, who snickers that it's fun to watch her work Kaiba over after she did it to normal Marik so often when they were children.
* MindRape: Subverted. Even though she has a Millennium Item, she's the only character that never (never ''seen'', at least) uses Shadow Game magic. No Penalty Games either.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: She had the chance to win against Kaiba, but didn't take it because it wasn't the specific victory she foresaw. Trying to get the win conditions she saw in her vision was what led Kaiba to be able to defeat her.
* PunnyName[=/=]SpellMyNameWithAnS: Ishizu's name is ''not'' Isis, but it is meant to reference the name Isis. Kazuki Takahashi basically took the name Isis and converted the letters to Japanese characters, though he chose to use Ishizu instead of Ishisu. Further proof is the priestess Isis in the Millennium World arc is spelled more phonetically correct (アイシス; ''aishisu'') as far as the English language goes.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Of the priestess Isis.
* TheStrategist: Has her duel with Kaiba all planned out from the start.
* WomanInWhite: She primarily wears cream white gowns, which adds to her air of enigma as the {{Herald}} in the Battle City arc.

[[folder:Rishid]]
'''Rishid (リシド; ''Rishido'') ([[DubNameChange Odion]])'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rishid_80.png
--> Voiced by: Konta (Japanese), Michael Alston Baley (English)

Marik's older brother by adoption and his [[TheDragon dragon]]. Abandoned as a child, Rishid was taken in by Marik's mother prior to his birth. However, his father never accepted him as a suitable heir to their family of tombkeepers and treated him as a servant rather than a son. Despite this, Rishid had always desire to become a true part of the family and a heir to the tombkeeper clan. When Marik was born, he was told by his dying mother to take care of his younger brother. Although they were close siblings, Rishid harbored a resentment for him as the true heir to the tombkeeper's clan and legitimate son of his parents. When young Marik was bitten by a cobra and became ill, their father beat Rishid for allowing Marik to be harmed, and ordered that he not leave Marik's bedside until he recovered. Rishid attempted to kill Marika in his sleep, but Marik awakens and murmurs "brother", [[WhatHaveIBecome which causes Rishid to drop the weapon in shock]]: Marik sees Rishid as his brother, despite the fact they are not blood related. And thus, Rishid stood by Marik's side, even when he turned to a life of evil.

He poses as Marik while the real Marik tries to infiltrate Yugi's gang as "Namu". In the ''Duel Monsters'' card game, he uses a deck themed on Egyptian mythology, which consists almost entirely of trap cards. His trump card is Holy Beast Serket.

-----
* AffablyEvil: Is very polite in his duel with Jounouchi, in the dub referring to him as "Mr. Wheeler," and clearly respects Jounouchi's dueling skills even when Jounouchi is about to lose. It's what gives his Marik disguise away. In addition, he himself isn't so much evil as he is completely devoted to protecting Marik.
* AntiVillain: He only follows Marik to protect him and keep his dark personality in check.
* BadassLongcoat: Wears the standard Rare Hunter robes, and being that he duels on an airship, it billows and flares dramatically all the time.
* BaldOfEvil: On first appearance.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He will do anything to protect Marik, even from himself.
* CannibalismSuperpower: His Holy Beast Serket gains half the ATK of every creature it devours. This is a bad thing.
* TheDragon: To Marik.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Rishid won enough Puzzle Cards for he and Marik to enter the Battle City finals, and would have defeated Jounouchi in a fair duel had Marik not forced him to use the Sun Dragon Ra. Conversely, Marik loses (or is in the process of losing when they are called off) all three of his duels with Yami & Yugi, despite cheating (while controlling Bandit Keith), having an Egyptian God Card on his side (while controlling Strings), and using Yugi's best friend as a shield (while controlling Jounouchi). It's pretty clear who the better duelist is here.
* JerkassFacade: In his duel with Jounouchi, as he's supposed to be impersonating Marik. Jounouchi eventually sees through it.
* LargeAndInCharge: Downplayed as he is second in command, but not completely in charge.
* MoralityChain: He keeps Marik's dark personality in check.
* NobleDemon: He's a villain, but he is honorable and moral.
** NobleTopEnforcer: Unlike Marik (and every other Ghoul), Rishid forgoes cheating in favor of kicking ass fairly.
* ObviousTrap: His Duel Monsters deck consists of almost nothing but traps, so when he ends his turn by just setting two cards, you ''know'' they're going to protect him, he isn't stupid. But you have to attack him sooner or later, and when you do, he's ready. Try to destroy his traps? He's got protection for them, though not foolproof.
* RedRightHand: The scarring/tattoos on his face.
* ScaryBlackMan: He's an Egyptian and is cold and stoic, giving a very intimidating presence.
* TattooedCrook: His face is tattooed in Egyptian hieroglyphs. He did it himself to prove his loyalty to the Tombkeepers since Marik's father would not officially induct him into the group.
* TrapIsTheOnlyOption: His deck consists of almost nothing but traps, so when he ends his turn by just setting two cards, you ''know'' they're going to protect him, he isn't stupid. But you have to attack him sooner or later, and when you do, he's ready.
* TrapMaster: Relies on masses of Trap Cards to duel.
* ScaryScorpions: His Holy Beast Serket. 2500 ATK. 2000 DEF. Can add half the ATK of every creature it devours to its score. That's pretty darn scary.
* TheStoic: Contends with Shadi for the title.
* TheUnfavourite: His adoptive father never saw him as more than a servant, and it only got worse once Ishizu and Marik were born.
* VillainBall: He had Jonouchi beat. Then Marik forces him to grab this by summoning Ra.
* WorthyOpponent: Plays totally fairly and respects Jounouchi's skills as a duelist. The sentiment is returned by Jounouchi, who notes unlike a lost of his past opponents, Rishid has played a fair duel and it's been one of the toughest yet. Which leads into problems since he's supposed to be impersonating Marik, who has shown no problems cheating and setting up unfair games.

[[folder:Shizuka Kawai (Serenity Wheeler)]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Shizuka-ep112-27s_6668.jpg
'''Shizuka Kawai (川井 静香; ''Kawai Shizuka'') ([[DubNameChange Serenity Wheeler]])'''
--> Voiced by: Creator/MichikoNeya (Japanese Toei anime), Mika Sakenobe (Duel Monsters), Creator/LisaOrtiz (English)

Jounouchi's sister who lost her eyesight, Jounouchi entered Duelist Kingdom to win the money to pay for her operation to heal her. She accompanies the gang for the later parts of Battle City.

She never plays any games in the manga - her role in Battle City is to give Jonouchi her support. In the anime, [[AscendedExtra they play her up a bit]], especially in the Virtual World filler, and even gave some of Ryo Bakura's scenes to her because [[DemotedToExtra why not]]. The one time she duels, her deck doesn't have a theme other than the monsters are all female and religous (which goes with her former IllGirl status). Her trump card is St. Joan.

-----
* ActionGirl: In the anime; manages to play the part by the end of her duel with Soichiro Ota.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her hair was pink in the Toei anime.
* AmazonBrigade: Her deck is all female monsters, though they range from the exceptionally girly Forgiving Maiden to FallenAngel Marie the [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Fallen One]] to LadyOfWar St. Joan.
* BadassAdorable
* BeautyBrainsAndBrawn: The Beauty to Anzu's Brains and Mai's Brawn. One could argue that in her duel alongside Ryuji and Honda she also plays this role, with Honda as the muscle, and Ryuji the brains.
* BeginnersLuck: Against Soichiro Ota. Sure she has lots of help from Honda and Ryuji, but the fact remains that she managed to take him down with cards she herself had picked out, despite not having a ''clue'' what most of them did.
* BigBrotherWorship: Like Mokuba, she loves her big brother, despite being separated from him for years. In the anime, her love for Jonouchi extended to her jumping in the river after having her eye surgery. Talk about devotion.
* BigDamnHeroes: Before she removed her bandages, the series plays her off as an IllGirl who needs escorting and to be with someone. What does she do right as she takes them off? Dives into an ocean from a pier, and saves her drowning brother. Though that only happens in the anime.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The Redhead.
* ChekhovsGun: At the start of the duel with Soichiro Ota ,we see her specifically selecting St. Joan (which ain't a bad pick). Guess which card takes out Ota's Perfect Machine King?
* [[ChickMagnet Dude Magnet]]: For part of the anime's version of Battle City arc, Ryuji and Honda fight for her affections. In the end, they both try giving her their numbers. This is not the case in the manga, where they simply treat her as their friend's sister.
* GrewASpine: She wasn't a coward at first, but she spends most of her duel with Soichiro scared and confused. Towards the end, she finally develops a backbone and comes back strong, taking Soichiro down after Ryuji fails.
* HeroicBSOD: After Honda is defeated by Soichiro Ota.
* IllGirl: During the Duelist Kingdom arc, where she's going blind and Jounouchi wants to win the prize money for her operation.
* TheIngenue: She's sweet and idealistic, even while she's losing her eyesight and requires expensive surgery to save it.
** Best shown after Yugi's defeat of Marik in the anime (the following is a scene directly from the manga that originally had [[DemotedToExtra Ryo Bakura]] instead of Shizuka), and Mai should be back. She appears to be the same, and Jonouchi's really worried, even saying he'd do anything to get her back... only for Mai to start laughing, saying he fell for it hard, and thanking Shizuka for helping her. An utterly-confused Jonouchi looks at her, and she simply sticks her tongue out as she giggles.
* LadyOfWar: Not Shizuka herself (though she certainly tries) but her trump card, St. Joan who with 2800/2000 is one of the better female cards in the game, and at the time the show was made, was one of the strongest Fairy monsters around. She's specifically modeled on Joan of Arc and has the looks to prove it.
** And then, in the ''one'' time she duels with some bits of help, she takes down one of the Big 5.
* LetsGetDangerous: The duel between Yugi and Jounouchi during Battle City (rather, its consequences), in which she fearlessly jumps into the sea to rescue Jonouchi after he sacrifices himself for Yugi.
** Doesn't apply to the manga, of course, where it was Kaiba who dropped the key into the sea so Jonouchi could set himself free, showing a small ounce of respect.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The light to Mai's dark (one of two).
* TheLoad: In anime filler, she starts out as this in her duel with Soichiro Ota, repeatedly requiring Honda and Otogi to bail her out (in her defence it was her first ever duel and she had to pick out her cards herself). She manages to [[TookALevelInBadass take a level in badass]] and transition to ActionGirl before the end of it.
* MeaningfulName: Shizuka means quiet, or silence. Her English name, Serenity, reflects this.
* MoralityPet: For Katsuya Jonouchi, her older brother.
* ObliviousToLove: She didn't realize that Anime Honda liked her and she called him her friend.
* PluckyGirl: She has her ups and downs, but still tries to do what she can.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly Girl to Anzu's Tomboy.
* TookALevelInBadass: In terms of the anime. You can spot the exact moment in the duel with Soichiro Ota where she decides to say "screw you" and starts channeling her brother for all she's worth.

[[folder:Seto Kaiba]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaibamanga_9140.png

* AllPowerfulBystander[=/=]BystanderSyndrome: During Battle City.
* AloofBigBrother: To Mokuba, especially in the manga.
* AntiVillain: Type I
** Type IV during Duelist Kingdom. He may have still been a jerk, but any truly villainous traits in him were gone thanks to being Dark Yugi's "Mind Crush" Penalty Game.
* [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Arrogant Duelist Guy]]
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking
-->''HOROBI NO [[GratuitousEnglish BAAAAASUTTTTOOOO SUTORIIIIIMMMUUU]]!''
* CatchPhrase: "Kudaran!" ("Nonsense!")
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic.
* IcyBlueEyes
* InsufferableGenius
* NobleDemon
* PapaWolf: To Mokuba.
* PromotionToParent: To Mokuba.
* TheQuietOne
* ReincarnationRomance: According to WordOfGod:
* SmugSmiler: So very much.
* SmugSnake: Prior to his HeelFaceTurn.
* SmugSuper: Post HeelFaceTurn.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: No denying that.
* TsurimeEyes
* WorthyOpponent: To Yugi.

* MoralityPet: To Kaiba.

* AlliterativeName: In the dub.
* GreenEyes

* BeautyBrainsAndBrawn: The Brawn.
* BikerBabe: She shows herself to be adept at riding a motorcycle in the DOMA FillerArc.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The Blonde.
* DarkChick: In Doma's FiveBadBand.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Throughout Duelist Kingdom.
* GamerChick
* PunnyName: In English.
* ShipTease: With Jonouchi.

* CoolOldGuy
* RetiredBadass

* DeadAllAlong: Possibly.
* StealthHiBye

* AlliterativeName: ''I''shizu ''I''shtar.
* {{Herald}}: In Battle City.
* JapanesePronouns: Uses "watakushi".

* BaldOfEvil: On first appearance.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He will do anything to protect Marik, even from himself.
* CannibalismSuperpower: His Holy Beast Serket gains half the ATK of every creature it devours. This is a bad thing.
* TheDragon: To Marik.

Joan.
* BadassAdorable
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The Redhead.

Marik's older brother by adoption and his [[TheDragon dragon]]. Abandoned as a child, Rishid was taken in by Marik's mother prior to his birth. However, his father never accepted him as a suitable heir and treated him as a servant rather than a son.

* HypercompetentSidekick: Rishid won enough Puzzle Cards for he and Marik to enter the Battle City finals, and would have defeated Jounouchi in a fair duel had Marik not forced him to use the Winged Dragon of Ra.

* DeadAllAlong: Possibly.
* StealthHiBye

Mystical Beast of Serket.

Added DiffLines:

* BaldOfEvil: On first appearance.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He will do anything to protect Marik, even from himself.
* CannibalismSuperpower: His Mystical Beast Serket gains half the ATK of every creature it devours. This is a bad thing.
* TheDragon: To Marik.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Rishid won enough Puzzle Cards for he and Marik to enter the Battle City finals, and would have defeated Jounouchi in a fair duel had Marik not forced him to use the Winged Dragon of Ra.
** NobleTopEnforcer: Unlike Marik (and every other Rare Hunter), Odion forgoes cheating in favor of kicking ass fairly.
* ObviousTrap: His deck consists of almost nothing but traps, so when he ends his turn by just setting two cards, you ''know'' they're going to protect him, he isn't stupid.
* ScaryScorpions: His Mystical Beast Serket. 2500 ATK. 2000 DEF. Can add half the ATK of every creature it devours to its score. That's pretty darn scary.
* TheStoic: Contends with Raphael and Shadi for the title.

Joan.

* SixthRanger: After the DDM arc, he joins with the main group somewhat.
