A former Navy Seal and member of the Dutton family who, as the show begins, has left active service and is working menial jobs to support his family in the Broken Rock Reservation. Circumstances force him to get involved in the Duttons' battle against Dan Jenkins and other threats, and he begins to take an active leadership role within the family.

* ManlyTears: [[spoiler:The death of his unborn child in Season 4, caused after Monica is involved in a car accident that causes injuries to her midsection)]] causes this.

* UnderestimatingBadassery: It becomes clear that several of the Duttons' enemies, including Robert Long, Dan Jenkins and the Beck brothers / Montana Free Militia, either don't know who he is or don't expect that he'll go after them at the behest of his father. This leads to predictably-fatal consequences for the majority of the attackers.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Avery (who falls in LoveAtFirstSight) in Season 1, 2 and 4. She tells Kayce later that she loved him from the moment she saw him, and eventually left the ranch and went to go back to live with her family because it threatened her focus. When they see each other again in Season 4, this subject is discussed, leading Kayce to claim that he wouldn't leave Monica, but she subsequently appears as a spirit to him during his vision quest towards the end of the season.

* RelationshipUpgrade: By the time Season 5 begins, it's essentially an open secret that Colby and Teeter are carrying on a relationship in secret, though neither of them seem to admit it to each other until the mid-season finale, when he races outside to tell the departing Teeter (who is part of the group selected to head to Texas with the herd to protect it from ''brucellosis'') goodbye, and she whispers that she loves him in response.

[[folder:Robert Long]]
!!Robert Long
->'''Portrayed By:''' Jeremiah Bitsui

Monica's brother, an ex-Army veteran who retains a degree of leadership within the Reservation. As the series begins, he helps enflame a mission to steal part of the Dutton ranch's livestock, running afoul of Kayce in the process.

* BullyingADragon: He seems to regard Kayce with cool disdain ''at best'', and is either dismissive of his attempts to ingratiate himself with the Reservation (because he's not Native-born) or treats him as a glorified gofer that is forced to do his bidding. It isn't until he riles up the livestock agents trying to stop Robert and his group that the former learns ''why'' Kayce has become AchillesInHisTent.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: He instigates a gunfight with a group of livestock agents set on getting back the cattle he and other members of the Reservation deliberately set loose, in a bid to destabilize the ranch. It isn't until he is shot in a retaliatory manner by Kayce (after fatally wounding Lee) that he realizes he went too far.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: His death sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads to Monica separating from Kayce (for a time) late in the first season, while the circumstances behind his death (being shot by Kayce in key areas, in a manner that suggests a targeted killing) hangs over the latter's head long through the series, being brought up several times as leverage against the latter.

** Also averted ''very'' hard earlier between seasons 2 and 3. When the hitmen from the Becks arrive at her office and leave Beth severely beaten, it takes the entire rest of the second season and a few episodes of season 3 for the bruises and marks to fade away. Even by the midpoint of season 3, she still looks as if she has some damage to her face, including what looks like a scar beneath the corner of her right eye.

* VillainProtagonist: Zig-zagged. A good argument could be made that John Dutton is a classic example of a Villain Protagonist, complete with a SympatheticPOV to rope the audience in to rooting for him. He’s also aware that Beth will try to have him killed, leading him to plan his own assassination on her.

* TheChainsOfCommanding: She emphasizes at several points during the series, both to John and Jamie, how difficult the role of a Governor is, and how decisions made have the potential to negatively impact thousands (or tens of thousands) of residents beyond her initial projections.
* FieldPromotion: She's upped to the role of a Senator by Season 5, with John taking over her former role as Attorney General.
* TheLostLenore: She makes several references to her husband, who died unexpectedly years earlier, throughout the series. It's implied that this forms part of her relationship dynamic with John, as they entered into a relationship with each to PairTheSpares, due to both having spouses who died young.
* UndyingLoyalty: She is the only government official who is consistently and unambiguously on the Dutton's side (hinted in Season 4 to be due to the fact that John's influence played a large part of how she got the job in the first place). As such, she always supports members of the family, both in terms of supporting Jamie's campaign to become Attorney General and advising John on how to act as Governor in Season 5.

A staffer assigned to Jamie Dutton's Attorney General campaign by Governor Perry during the first season, Christina ultimately falls in love with him.

* CommutingOnABus: After fleeing the state of Montana in Season 2, she shows up midway through Season 4, now with Jamie's child in tow. She stays at his house until the end of Season 4 before disappearing again, and is not living at Jamie's house, nor is referenced by him at any point during Season 5.
* ItsAllAboutMe: It's implied that the whole reason she got close with Jamie and seduced him is to further her own career, as she immediately kicks him out of her apartment (after several weeks of otherwise-relaxed cohabitation) when he tells her he's dropping his quest to become Attorney General.
* LadyMacbeth: The first notable example in the series. She seduces Jamie at a moment of weakness by telling him that he's better than his family, and inspiring him to do better. Midway through Season 2, when Jamie ultimately decides to abandon his campaign for Attorney General, she lights into him, accusing of him [[ItsAllAboutMe not doing enough to further her own career]] and blasting him for being no better than his family, before abruptly kicking him out of her apartment.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Implied, as Governor Perry notices her instant attraction to him and ultimately tells him in private after the fact that [[ShipperOnDeck they would make a good couple]]. However, given Christina's LadyMacbeth and ItsAllAboutMe, it ultimately becomes unclear if she genuinely loved him, or if it was an act to further her own agenda.

* SpottingTheThread: Given her status as Jamie's campaign manager, she is usually the first to spot instances of duplicity or misrepresentation, exemplified when she catches on that Sarah Nguyen (working undercover as a staffer) isn't who she says she is long before the latter drops the act and tells her who she is.

* BigGood: During the first three seasons, he's unambiguously on Beth's side, giving her all the resources she needs to set up a branch office in Park County, flying to the county multiple times to glean status updates from her (and help initiate her mass land purchase to stop Jenkins and Providence) and is ''by fare'' the most unambiguously positive investor in the series, as he's extremely pleased with Beth's actions. This all goes out the window when he performs a FaceHeelTurn in Season 4.
