[[folder:The Earth Nations As a Whole]]
* {{Coma}}: Personifications of Earth fall into a coma-like state whenever they receive what would be a fatal wound on a human. They rest in peace while their body heals and awaken right after.
* HealingFactor: As long as a wound isn't "fatal", the personifications of Earth can quickly regenerate and keep on going. If it is "fatal" they fall into a coma to allow their body to heal.
* SwissArmyWeapon:
** Japan: (Hanasaka) Katana, revolver.
** France: (Trouvère) saber, glock pistol.
** Prussia: (Rapunzel) glaive, sniper rifle, arming sword.
** Italy: (Thyrus) Arming sword, pistol.
** Germany: ahlspiess, semi-automatic rifle.
** Russia: (Sunflower) axe, sub-machine gun.
** Romano: (Gladiolus) Roman scissor, shield, pump action rifle.
** China: DualTonfas, shotguns.
** Australia: boomerang, [[DualWielding daggers]], automatic pistols.
* {{Synchronization}}: When their nation is attacked or is hit by a natural disaster, they feel pain and suffer injuries at the site. A bad economy can make them ill as well.
* TheEmpath: All nations have a limited empathetic connection with their people where they can get a sense of the moods of the general populace.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:England (Arthur Kirkland)]]
* AloofOlderBrother: Towards America when his brother has amnesia.
* AntiHero: He does what he has to in order to protect his brothers and Earth but his personality can be distant, harsh, and cold. For the well-being of his brothers and Earth, he sometimes makes morally dubious choices and performs manipulative actions such as when he tries to trick America into severing his connection with Vale's people, a FateWorseThanDeath for them.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears one on the return trip to Remnant.
* BlackMagic: The ritual to sever a personification's connection with their people, which leads to a nation-wide LossOfIdentity for the citizens. The ritual causes the personification extreme pain, and can only be used once every thousand years. England uses it to save Canada's life by severing his connection with Mantle.
* BritishStuffiness: Downplayed in that England does not always act like this. He keeps his more vulnerable emotions under wraps and maintains a stiff and distant demeanor when dealing with most people. This causes his emotions to build up until he [[AngerBornOfWorry snaps and says things he does not mean.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: He starts off hating Remnant and refusing to take part in their war against Salem. He grows to care for the people there (primarily Teams RWBY and JNPR) to the point where he'll threaten [[spoiler:Ozpin]] to keep them safe.
* CondescendingCompassion: During ''The Depths of Deception''. His compassion towards America is tainted by his hatred of Vale and Remnant and his belief that he knows what is best for his brother. He thinks America is ignorant and naive due to his amnesia, and thus cannot be trusted with deciding things for himself. England grows out of it after America calls him out on his manipulations.
* DefrostingIceKing: He exhibits GoodIsNotNice and is often scowling but softens up as the series goes on.
* DrowningMySorrows: He goes to the bar and drinks himself to oblivion after [[spoiler:putting the [[MercyKillArrangement sleeping curse on America]].]] He smells like alcohol for days afterward.
* EmotionBomb: England's Semblance. He releases a blast of [[PurpleIsPowerful violet]] energy in an explosion-like wave, which forces everyone in range to feel what he is feeling. The emotions are so strong it leaves allies stunned while his targets are left as helpless, sobbing wrecks.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In his first onscreen act, he threatens Ozpin and demands to know what he [[PapaWolf has done with his brothers]].
* FlawExploitation: Atlas and Watts goad England into attacking them by [[BerserkButton threatening and insulting America]].
* ForcedToWatch: Watts uses his [[AndIMustScream Semblance]] to freeze England in place and make him watch Atlas [[ElectricTorture torture]] Canada.
* ForeignLanguageTirade: He screams at Ozpin in Gaelic after [[spoiler:America is half-blinded from the attack on Frontier.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: He can be gruff, abrasive, rude, vicious, and hates anything to do with Remnant with a passion. Well, not ''everything'', but many things. [[spoiler:Like Ozpin.]]
* HairTriggerTemper: It does not take much to set him off, especially when [[VitriolicBestBuds France]] or [[spoiler:[[ManipulativeBastard Ozpin]]]] are around. The former is usually PlayedForLaughs. The latter is [[PlayedForDrama not]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Acts aloof, cold, and bitter, but cares deeply for his brothers and shows a gentle (if gruff) protectiveness towards Ruby.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: England is violently over-protective of America and Canada. Enough so that he is willing to threaten to nuke Atlas if the Atlas soldier Greenlee does not talk, vows to kill Russia if he manipulates America again, and tries to trick America into agreeing to a ritual that would sever his ties with Vale's people and leave them [[LossOfIdentity without a]] [[FateWorseThanDeath personification]]. Seriously, if you want to live '''[[PunctuatedForEmphasis Do. Not. Threaten. America. Or. Canada. In. Front. Of. England]].'''
* LethalChef: As per canon. Characters take great lengths to keep England out of the kitchen. According to Italy ([[NiceGuy of all people]]), England can make any dish explode.
* MagicStaff: Rather than use a SwissArmyWeapon like the rest of the cast, England wields a magical staff with which he can perform a variety of offensive and defensive spells. Once such defensive spell allows him to shield an entire airship.
* MagicalIncantation: His verbal spells are Latin, including the [[spoiler:activator and counter-spells for America's sleeping curse.]]
* {{Mana}}: He draws magical energy from Remnant's air in order to perform his more powerful spells.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: He doesn't care about saving Remnant or defeating Salem. His only goal is to keep his brothers and Earth safe.
* PapaWolf: He always is this when it comes to his brothers but develops protective feelings to Team RWBY and JNPR as well. When England finds out [[spoiler:Ozpin hurt Vale and is willing to let any of his allies die "for the greater good", he threatens to kill Ozpin over and over if Ozpin tries to sacrifice his family, friends, or the former students.]]
* PayEvilUntoEvil: His threat to nuke Atlas. He didn't go through with it, but there is no doubt he would have if Greenlee did not talk.
* PragmaticHero: Hehas no problem doing morally questionable things to achieve greater ends. [[spoiler:After Ozpin tries to murder America, England is willing to kill Oscar to kill Ozpin so Ozpin cannot appear and harm any of them again. He backs down after some convincing from France and concedes to give Oscar a sleeping spell to use if Ozpin emerges.]]
* {{Pride}}: While not as bad as some examples, he has his moments of arrogance, particularly when he thinks he knows what is best for [[AmnesiacHero America]].
* RedOniBlueOni: The quick-to-anger and quicker to attack Red to France's laid-back, calm, and diplomatic Blue.
* RitualMagic: England has a spellbook or arrays and rituals for a variety of situations, from a spell that works like an x-ray to one that permanently severs a nation's connection to their people. Thankfully the latter [[MagicPrerequisite only works once every thousand years]].
* SourSupporter: He despises Remnant and has no interest in saving it but joins the fight anyway to save his brothers.
* SpellBook: He carries a tome of spells and rituals with him on the return trip to Remnant.
* StepfordSnarker: One of the ways he hides his insecurities is by giving scathing comments about others' (particularly America's) perceived shortcomings.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With France. He argues with France constantly (sometimes [[PlayedForDrama seriously]], sometimes [[PlayedForLaughs not]]) but when France is captured by Atlas soldiers England is livid.
* WouldHurtAChild: He is willing to [[spoiler:kill Oscar to kill Ozpin with him after Ozpin tries to [[HumanSacrifice murder America]], Penny, and Pyrrha. France talks him out of it.]]
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Italy (Feliciano Vargas)]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: Like in canon, he flirts with women but has a ''very'' close relationship with Germany. For example, Germany is the one he is trying to prove himself to and Italy is the one who convinces Germany to stay behind on the second trip to Remnant in order to lead the Taskforce. Considering the lack of romance in the series, it's unsurprising that it's left ambiguous.
* CowardlyLion: He's terrified of the Grimm and the mere thought of the Grimmlands but goes to find America anyway. He also willingly volunteers to join the Atlas-rescue group to save America, France, Australia, and Romano. Later he distracts the [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Silver Eyes powered]] Ruby in order to protect Japan and Weiss.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Is TheDitz, but manages to rush Roman and knock him off the airship before he could attack Japan from behind. He also beheads the Ursa Major attacking Germany in one swipe. Later, he stands up to Ruby when she's under the influence of [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Silver Eyes]] and manages to knock her out. It's only because of his Intangibility Semblance but still.
* DeathGlare: He shoots Weiss one when she blames Romano for [[spoiler:losing the Relic of Creation.]] It is one of the first signs [[OutOfCharacterAlert something is wrong]].
* DrivesLikeCrazy: He uses this skill to get himself, America, Germany, Prussia, and Japan through the Grimm-infested Vale and to Beacon.
* FastballSpecial: Ruby launches him using her scythe during the [[spoiler:Warden Grimm]] battle.
* FragileSpeedster: At times he gives Ruby a run for her money when it comes to speed but he has difficulty taking a hit. Luckily, [[{{Intangibility}} his Semblance]] helps him avoid taking huge amounts of damage.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Has little faith in his fighting abilities and sees himself as TheLoad in the Remnant group. He does not see the good he has done and how he has assisted his friends.
* {{Intangibility}}: His Semblance, which he discovers when Ruby attempts to dissolve him with Silver Eyes. Italy himself does not realize it until later.
* ItsAllMyFault: Italy blames himself for Germany and Prussia's injuries and attracting [[EmotionEater Gri]][[TheHeartless mm]] to Kuroyuri with his fear.
* NoSell: Silver Eyes can't disintegrate something they [[{{Intangibility}} can't touch.]]
* TheLoad: Fears he is this when it comes to the dangers of Remnant and facing Grimm. He uploads a Grimm battle simulation to prove that he can fight... only to fail at it completely.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:France (Francis Bonnefoy)]]
* AgentPeacock: France is a vain flirt who freaks out when he gets dirt in his hair yet he fights as viciously as the others when eliminating the Grimm outside the World Conference in New York. The kicker is that until America reminded him that his weapon is also a gun, he uses only a saber. France fought with a short-range weapon for a good chunk of the battle.
* AttackReflector: [[spoiler:France's Semblance allows him to deflect attacks back at their source with increased force.]]
* BadassInDistress: He is captured by soldiers of Atlas and taken to the Transformation Institute with Australia and Romano.
* BiTheWay: Justified due to the lack of romantic plots in the series in general. France considers people of all genders to be "beautiful" and will sometimes flirt with them.
* CowardlyLion: France defends Blake from Adam even though he has every chance to run away and Blake is begging him to leave her behind. And although he is terrified, he still manages to cut off Tyrian's tail when he threatens Canada.
* CulturedBadass: He's philosophical, enjoys cooking, and is fully capable of kicking ass.
* DramaQueen: He freaks out when he gets dirt in his hair during the journey through Anima.
* GoodIsNotSoft: France does not hesitate to kill the unconscious guards in the Institute. As he said, they easily could awake and sound the alarm.
* GratuitousFrench: Surprisingly for a Hetalia fanfic, this is mostly averted. The one time he speaks in French is out of defiance when [[spoiler:Atlas tries to brainwash him into forgetting his own language.]]
* MistakenIdentity: Salem's forces believe he is Vacuo during ''The Shattered Soul''. Because of that, Atlas attempts to brainwash him into believing the same.
* RedOniBlueOni: The laid-back, calm, and diplomatic Blue to England's quick-to-anger and quicker to attack Red.
* TheDeterminator: He never gives in to Atlas's brainwashing and never even considers giving up.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With England.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Russia (Ivan Braginsky)]]
* AnAxeToGrind: His SwissArmyWeapon of choice.
* BloodKnight: His first reaction to a fight is to grin and jump right in.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Part of what makes him so dangerous and unpredictable. He will stop England from attacking Qrow because Ruby is watching, but will take advantage of America's amnesia to force him to activate his Aura. He also threatens to nuke Atlas with a grin on his face. He sees nothing wrong with his actions during the latter instances.
* CreepyGood: He is on the hero's side, but still manages to unnerve Teams RWBY and JNPR (and some of the nations).
* HiddenDepths: Underneath his amoral, PsychopathicManchild nature is someone capable of great compassion, and who is genuinely glad to be friends with America and Ruby. He also likes knitting.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: He has a close bond with Ruby and created [[CombinationAttack a team attack]] with her. She is about half his height.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The first thing he does in the series is put Ironwood in a chokehold and refuse to release him, commenting that it is a good idea to have a hostage.
* ManipulativeBastard: He manipulates America into activating his Aura while the latter is amnesiac and thus has no idea about Russia's PsychopathicManchild side.
* ScarsAreForever: [[spoiler:The scars on his throat never faded after decades have passed.]]
* SlashedThroat: [[spoiler:In the past, a few of his bosses punished him by cutting his throat over and over. This left him with scars on his neck, which he covers with his scarf.]]
* SociopathicHero: He has selective empathy and is outright psychotic at times but can be truly friendly to his companions. He is also arguably the most ruthless nation of Earth (as displayed by his threat to nuke Atlas). but still fights to save Earth. His thoughts about saving Remnant are ambiguous at best and he might only be fighting to rescue America and because it's fun.
* TheReveal: Russia wears a scarf [[spoiler:to cover the scars on his neck, which were given to him by his human bosses.]]
* WhyDidYouMakeMeHitYou: He acts regretful and insists it is [[spoiler:America's]] fault that Russia attacked him since [[spoiler:if America defended himself, Russia would not have to harm him anymore.]] His logic is as [[PsychopathicManchild twisted]] as it sounds, and he eventually admits he attacked [[spoiler:America because he believed he was lying about his PTSD and Russia wanted him to go back to normal.]]
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Germany (Ludwig Beilschmidt)]]
* BigBrotherMentor: He has shades of this towards Ruby, especially during their conversation about [[FalseFriend Emerald]].
* BladeOnAStick: His SwissArmyWeapon is an ahlspiess-semi-automatic rifle.
* DrillSergeantNasty: He is exceedingly blunt towards the Taskforce and never minces words to soothe their egos. Since they are meant to protect Earth from Grimm, he will not allow their prides or petty squabbles get in the way of their duty.
* SpiderSense: Germany's Semblance allows him to subconsciously sense incoming danger (to himself and his allies) and take measures to avoid it.]]
* SuperReflexes: Along with SpiderSense, his Semblance allows him to react to his surroundings with superhuman speed, allowing him to dodge incoming attacks.
* TheLeader: Of the Anti-Grimm Taskforce. His leadership qualities are why Italy convinces him to stay behind from the second Remnant rescue mission. The Taskforce needs Germany more than they do.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Prussia (Gilbert Beilschmidt)]]
* BayonetYa: On Remnant, Prussia carries a sniper rifle with a bayonet attached to the tip.
* BigEgoHiddenDepths: He goes around boasting how awesome he is and often has people shaking their heads exasperatedly. Though there are hints beforehand, his kinder side really shows when he offers to teach [[NonActionGuy Austria]] how to fight with [[WhatYouAreInTheDark no one else]] the wiser.
* BladeOnAStick: His weapon is a glaive-sniper rifle, arming sword]].
* DrillSergeantNasty: He berates the Taskforce for every mistake they make during battle.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Prussia may act like a self-absorbed buffoon, but is intelligent and levelheaded in combat situations. This is on display during the Taskforce's fight against the Phoenix Grimm and again when he offers to teach [[NonActionGuy Austria]] how to fight. He is also the first to figure out Germany discovered his Semblance during the Fox Spawner battle.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: When it's time for the Taskforce to learn how to fight Holo-Grimm, he puts together a simulated [[HopelessBossFight hopeless Mook battle]] without warning them. He sends forth his creation while cheering manically for the Taskforce's defeat.
* TheLancer: He serves as one to Germany in the Taskforce and can be considered their second-in-command. He immediately takes charge while Germany is incapacitated by the Phoenix Grimm.
* WhatTheHellHero: Prussia calls out the nations of the Anti-Grimm Taskforce after the fight with the Phoenix Grimm for [[LeeroyJenkins acting foolishly in battle]], [[GloryHound fighting over who got to land the killing blow]], and [[IWorkAlone not working together]] to defeat an enemy that could cause wildfires and was threatening a small town.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Japan (Kiku Honda)]]
* CuteBruiser: He likes cute things like the stuffed kitten he won at the Fair, and also manages to kick Neo's ass in their fight until [[LeeroyJenkins Ruby]] interferes.
* HatesBeingTouched: He does not enjoy physical contact. One noteworthy exception is when he returns Ruby's embrace during their reunion.
* MasterSwordsman. He is very skilled with a katana. Enough so that he trounces Neo until Ruby recklessly jumps in.
* TheStoic: He remains stonefaced and unflappable, even when facing the scariest of Grimm.
* TranquilFury: He is icily enraged when he realizes that Qrow was using Canada as bait to lure out Salem's forces.
* TheQuietOne: He rarely speaks and does not go out of his way to start a conversation. That's what makes his [[FishOutOfWater offer of someone to talk to]] to Pyrrha so notable.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:China (Yao Wang)]]
* AdultFear:
** He is not happy when Japan goes to say goodbye to America without telling anyone where he was going. Considering the last time nations failed to arrive at a meeting was when America and Canada were abducted, it's not hard to see why.
** His house is overrun by Grimm while Macau, Hong Kong, and Taiwan are inside. He is en route when Taiwan calls him in a panic and he can only listen helplessly as she is attacked.
* BadassAdorable: He squeals over cute things and can effortlessly slaughter hordes of Grimm. Particularly when they threaten his family.
* DualTonfas: He wields a pair of tonfas-shotguns which are given to him by America.
* DualWielding: China wields two tonfas that are also shotguns.
* NervesOfSteel: He remains calm and collected when he walks downstairs to find [[spoiler:''[[HumanoidAbomination Salem]]'' standing in America's kitchen.]] Not many could face [[spoiler:the Queen of the Grimm]] and remain polite and levelheaded.
* PapaWolf: He ''wrecks'' the Grimm that attack Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Reacts this way after [[spoiler:Salem's attack on America's mansion.]] He refuses to let her get away with what she did and becomes determined to bring her down.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Australia (Jett Kirkland)]]
* AnimalEyeSpy: [[spoiler:His Semblance lets him see through the eyes of nearby animals along with control them.]]
* BadassInDistress: He is captured by Atlas soldiers and taken to the Transformation Institute with France and Romano.
* BattleBoomerang: His weapon of choice. It splits into dual daggers and automatic pistols.
* BoisterousBruiser: He is very eager to fight the Grimm outside the World Meeting.
* DefiantCaptive: While he is being held in the Institute, he constantly curses at the guards and tries to break free of his bonds. The guards gag and blindfold him.
* DualWielding: His new boomerang splits into dual pistols and daggers.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Before anyone can think [[spoiler:Australia's Semblance]] is weak, he uses it to [[spoiler:control catfish and use them to kill a gigantic crocodile Grimm.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: He becomes calm and serious when he discovers America's Semblance is Technopathy and when he promises to keep it a secret from his boss.
* PowerGlows: His eyes glow dark green when he [[spoiler:uses his Semblance.]]
* ReverseGrip: He sometimes wields his daggers this way.
* SecretKeeper: He promises not to tell his boss about :America's Semblance, even though it makes America a potential PersonOfMassDestruction.
* {{Squee}}: He joins Nora and Penny in cooing over the cute newborn Pomeranian puppies being shown on the news.
* TheBeastmaster: [[spoiler:His Semblance allows him to take control of nearby animals. In one instance he uses it to control catfish and kill a crocodile-like Grimm with their poison.]]
* WeaponTwirling: He has a habit of twirling his daggers while holding them.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Romano/South Italy (Lovino Vagras)]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: Senses that something is bothering Italy and confronts England and France about it. He refuses to be locked out of the loop, and forces them to tell him about Remnant.
* DespairEventHorizon: Reaches his upon realizing that rescue isn't coming after spending weeks alone in his cell in the Transformation Institute. [[spoiler:He gets better.]]
* DistressedDude: He is [[spoiler:captured by Atlas soldiers and taken to the Transformation Institute with France and Australia.]] Unlike France and Australia he did not fight Grimm or show any badassery so he counts as this.
* SirSwearsALot: Romano keeps his canon habit of cussing every few sentences. The author put a cursing warning at the beginning of the first chapter he is in.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: No, he definitely did not give America five energy drinks.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Austria (Roderich Edelstein)]]
* KnightInSourArmor: He hates fighting and detests certain nations but fights to save Earth from the Grimm regardless.
* NonActionGuy: The reason why his willingness to join the Taskforce is so strange, as acknowledged in-universe. It turns out he knows multiple Remnant portals opened up over his country, and wants to protect his people himself instead of relying on the other nations. He cannot sit back and let others fight for him this time.
* NotSoStoic: When faced with the Fox Spawner Grimm, he trembles and stammers that the Grimm could swallow them whole. Switzerland tells him to shut up.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: He joins the Taskforce and goes out of his way to try to improve his shooting skills because he wants to be able to defend himself (and Hungary) from the Grimm.
* TookALevelInBadass: He goes from a NonActionGuy who awkwardly holds his rifle to [[spoiler:stabbing a Byakko Grimm through the eye while his other arm is trapped in the Grimm's jaws.]]
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Finland (Tino Väinämöinen)]]
* AscendedExtra: His role has grown as the series went on. He showed up in a couple chapters of ''The Depths of Deception'', got a more prominent role as part of the Taskforce in ''The Atrocities of Atlas'', and became instrumental in [[spoiler:befriending the Atlas soldier]] in ''The Charlatan of Choice''.
