** Furthermore, it's revealed in Da Big Dakka that Dark Eldar children are not inherently psychopathic sadists, with the POV Dark Eldar character recalling being confused and horrified when witnessing her first torture, and outright begged the adult to stop, with the experience being to shown to have been very traumatizing, thus showing that the Dark Eldar's depravity has nothing to do with their innate nature, and is instead an aspect of the culture they're raised in.

Added DiffLines:

* TheChainOfHarm: Da Big Dakka reveals that the Dark Eldar are actually huge victims of this, as the children are shown to be fairly normal, and their sadism and psychopathy is shown to be a result of the adults deliberately raising them to be that way by exposing them to various tortures and forcing them to partake in it, which traumatizes them severely, which in turn leads to them raising the next generation the same way.

* EatingOptional: Drukhari can eat traditional food, but more for pleasure than anything. Thanks to their unique adaptations to life in the Webway, their digestive systems can no longer extract much nutrition from physical food. Instead, they gain nearly all of their sustenance by feeding on the psychic energy generated from the pain and despair of their victims.

* ForTheEvulz: While the Drukhari are required to inflict pain to stave off the predation of She Who Thirsts, they have long since come to enjoy inflicting acts of unnecessary cruelty for its own sake. Many of them have openly bragged that they'd continue tormenting the galaxy purely for pleasure even if Slaanesh wasn't a factor. Their extremely rare "benevolent" actions always have some degree of sadism as a motivation.

* MagicallyIneptFighter: Thanks to generations of suppression to avoid attracting daemons, the Drukhari's psychic abilities have atrophied into near-nonexistence. The most they can do with them now is passively feed on the pain of their victims. They compensate for this loss by focusing entirely on their physical and technological combat skills, making them even more skilled in battle than most of their Craftworld kin.

* EvilerThanThou: Many factions actually consider them the most evil faction, ADarkerShadeOfBlack even worse than Chaos. They might be on to something, cause while some Chaos worshippers ended up as such by being deceived or corrupted against their will, the Dark Eldar quite deliberately and gleefully are pieces of shit. To wit: when the ancient Eldar's depravity caused Slaanesh to be born and decimated their civilization, while the Craftworld and Exodite Eldar saw it as a wake-up call to reign in their excesses, the Dark Eldar decided to deal with the situation by doubling down.

* TheDreaded: Aside from the Orks, Tyranids, and possibly Necrons, every faction that is aware of Mandrakes is terrified of them - they're inscrutable and nearly unstoppable killers who can appear from nearly anywhere, phase through anything you may have available in the moment, and mercilessly cut you down (if you're lucky) or deliver you to the Drukhari who hired them to kidnap you so they can do fun Drukhari things. This extends to the Drukhari themselves, who give them an extremely wide berth and only interact with them if they need to hire them for something, and refuse to go anywhere near Aelindrach or spots in Commorragh where they have been active.

* HorrifyingTheHorror: Drukhari fear them about as much as everyone else does, take great pains to minimize interactions with them, and are strictly transactional when they do interact with them. They also treat Aelindrach as a no man's land and avoid it at all cost.

* FlyingPostman: Scourges are the WingedHumanoid variant, serving as the main method of transporting messages in a city where telepathy is forbidden and regular mail too easily intercepted.

* WingedHumanoid: The Scourges are normal Dark Eldar who have their bodies altered to give them wings and flight capability, including painful bone hollowing procedures. While it may seem like a long and painful process to go through just to become a messenger pigeon, Scourges act as couriers for the kabals and are highly prized. They cannot be killed without facing the retribution of every kabal around, and they are given access to some of the best weaponry and armor the Dark Eldar have.

->"Arrogant creature, you will pay for the insult of trying to force me to the ground. The mere thought of brushing my feet against the same dirt you tread sickens me. I will take your imminent screams of dying anguish as your crude attempt at an apology."
-->--Sorakhn Elish, Scourge Solarite

Scourges are Drukhari who find themselves seized by a particular obsession with the air, entranced by the freedom of the skies and disgusted by the plodding, heavy tread of those who must walk upon the earth. In time, this drives them to seek the ministrations of the Hameonculi, under whose knives they are painfully reshaped into winged creatures of the air. Scourges roost among the topmost spires of Commorragh, and serve an inavaluable role as trusted messengers for the Dark City's ever-feuding rulers. In battle, they act as skirmishers and flying fire support, killing and mocking their ground-bound foes from the safety of the skies.

* MeatgrinderSurgery: The process necessary for turning a regular Drukhari into a Scourge is a long and agonizing surgical transformation, where the subject remains fully awake and conscious as the Hameonculus hollows out their bones with drills, grafts slabs of muscle onto their back and shoulders, and implants a new set of limbs into their back.
* RiteOfPassage: After completing the agonizing surgeries necessary to physically turn them into a WingedHumanoid, a newly-made Scourge must fly from the laboratory-oubliette of the Hameonculus that shaped them and up to the spires where the other Scourges dwell. This is a grueling task, as it requires the aspirant to climb up the entire height of the Dark City, straining their bloody wings and still-painful grafts to the limit and braving feuding Hellion gangs and Reaver crews that hunt in Commorragh's skies, and only those with the mettle to survive this trip will be accepted among the Scourges.
* WingedHumanoid: To become a Scourges, an aspirant will contract a Hameonculus to alter their body to give them wings, both avian and batlike depending on personal inclination, and flight capability, including painful bone hollowing procedures and the addition of additional muscle and adrenaline dispensers on their torso. Their leaders, the Solarites, eventually become twisted into avian horrors that do not much resemble the Eldar they once were. While it may seem like a long and painful process to go through just to become a messenger pigeon, Scourges act as couriers for the kabals and are highly prized. They cannot be killed without facing the retribution of every kabal around, and they are given access to some of the best weaponry and armor that the Dark Eldar have.

The Dark Eldar as a whole belong to the vilest, possibly most evil faction in the setting and most of them wouldn't have it any other way. For all the atrocious acts the various factions of the 40K-era Milky Way engage in, the depths of the Drukhari's duplicitous cruelty inspire visceral disgust in nearly all of them. Only other Eldar factions would be open to allying with them and even they're rightfully wary of doing so.
** That said, not all of them are fully depraved. Some Dark Eldar do come to understand that their lifestyle is futile and self-destructive, but see little other option than to remain. Only a few manage to leave the city entirely to find a better life elsewhere. Some even join Craftworlds.
