* WorkingClassHero: Maddie comes from a poor family with a father who's five-years unemployed. Her whole family, including her grandmother, her father, her mother, her little brother, and previously her eleven older siblings before they each moved out, lives together in one apartment. She also mentions that her aunt's wedding was catered by a charity, with the wedding registry being at a pawn shop. She primarily works at the candy counter--which is implied to not pay her all that much--to help her family make ends meet as well as to buy herself or other family members little luxuries on occasion, but she at various points in the show works other jobs alongside her job at the Tipton, such as working as a line cook and mascot at the Cluck Bucket. As a result, she takes a lot of pride in working to earn money and is disdainful of rich people and their privileged attitudes. She also champions helping the poor, volunteering at events to help out the impoverished.

* AthleticallyChallenged: She's not good at Physical Education, is physically weaker than London, and needs London's help in order not to fail gym.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Maddie is generally very nice and friendly, but she has a temper and has gone to surprisingly cruel lengths to get revenge. Sometimes it's justified, but sometimes she goes too far, and when she realizes she's gone too far, she'll try her best to fix her mistakes and make up for it.

** However, "The Suite Smell of Excess" features an alternate reality where Maddie's and London's roles are swapped, with Maddie being the hotel heiress and London being the candy counter girl. Here, the trope is played straight with Maddie, so much that she makes the main series' London look like a genius.

* EternalEmployee: Until season 3, Maddie is the only one seen working the candy counter, even though logically there should be other people who work it particularly when she's at school. This is averted in season 3, however, as due to Ashley Tisdale needing to film ''Film/HighSchoolMusical2'', we see Millicent and Nia taking up candy counter shifts.

* GirlyGirl: Maddie enjoys fashion--in a season 1 episode, she qualifies as a finalist for a fashion magazine against [[TheFashionista London]], and in "That's So The Suite Life of Hannah Montana," she's easily able to identify that a blouse Raven is wearing was designed by fashion designer Donna Cabonna--and shopping, and she's a huge romantic, with a fondness for romance novels like ''Literature/PrideAndPrejudice.'' She's also good with kids, and much of her casual wardrobe and her bedroom is [[PinkIsFeminine pink]]. Her girliness is part of why she's able to get along with London despite their very different backgrounds and personalities.

* AnimalLover: He cares for animals, such as saving Tippy the horse and protecting whales from being hurt from the ship. Most shown in the episode "The Birdman Of Boston" where he helped to hatch a hawk's egg and was against Mr Moseby having it removed from the hotel.

* BadassBookworm: While primarily displayed in the ''Suite Life on Deck'', there are moments when Cody actually surpasses Zack in physical ability. Best examples are in "It's All Greek to Me", where he lifts a heavy glass case by himself, in another, he rips a towel in half, and in another, he tackles and takes down Kurt Warner, one of the ''greatest undrafted football players of all time,'' and one of the greatest players in ''NFL history.'' Let it be known that the first two were because he heard Bailey talk about another guy in a romantic way, so they could be jealousy-fuelled. The last one was all him, though.

* DeadpanSnarker: does have moments of this, especially when he's annoyed. It's mainly directed at Zack or Woody.

* NervousWreck: He can become panicked and stressed out about situations, especially if it involves school or misdemeanours. He screams a lot and has a blanket that he hugs when scared.

* SicklyNeuroticGeek: Cody apparently has a trick knee, a sensitive scalp, a weak clavicle and is allergic to multiple things to only name a few of his aliments.

* MusclesAreMeaningless: London has a slender body and isn't any more muscular than Maddie, but she's shown to be by far the stronger of the two, easily lifting megazines and shopping bags that Maddie can barely lift over the ground. She says that is because she works out.

* AmbiguouslyGay: He 'was' characterized this way, [[CharacterizationMarchesOn before]] [[spoiler: his romance with Tutweiler in "On Deck."]]
