* FriendOrIdolDecision: When Ariel first becomes human, Sebastian resolves to tell her father about Ursula's deal so they can reverse it. This would conveniently free Sebastian from his job as Ariel's BadlyBatteredBabysitter, and possibly allow him to return to his old job as royal court composer. However, when he realizes just how miserable this would make Ariel, Sebastian decides to give up his "idol" (his king, his job) for the sake of his "friend" (Ariel).

Celibate Heroine is pushing it. Melody dances with a boy and the movie ends on her meeting the merboy again and smiling at him. It's not a lot but it's enough to indicate the movie wants to pair her off with a boy.

Added DiffLines:

* TragicKeepsake: In the Broadway version, his trident is one from his late father Poseidon.

Added DiffLines:

* AdaptationalBadass: An interesting variant, as it's not Ursula herself who gets this in the Broadway version, but rather ''her shell necklace''. In the film, it was exactly as Ursula describes it in the play--a simple, albeit magical trinket whose sole purpose is to keep Ariel's voice inside. Ursula is already plenty powerful without it and destroying it has no ill effects on her. In the Broadway version, it's basically the EvilCounterpart to Triton's trident--a sacred artifact that grants its user incredible power and is the source of all of Ursula's magic, just as the trident is the source of Triton's. It's mentioned that Ursula relies on it so much that destroying it would kill her, which she denies. [[spoiler:The ending proves that it's true, as Ariel defeats Ursula by destroying the shell]].

Added DiffLines:

* TragicKeepsake: Her shell is depicted as this in the Broadway version, given to her by her deceased father Poseidon. Subverted in some showings, as they occasionally portray him as simply giving it to her so that [[TheUnfavorite she'll]] [[AbusiveParents leave him alone]].
