Tenzin is an Airbending half-Air Nomad/half-Water Tribesman, and
Aang and Katara]]Katara's youngest son. He is a councilman representing the Air Nomads for the United Republic; following the events of AvatarTheLastAirbender (now a misnomer) said culture now consists of him and his family, and the Air Acolytes, a group of non-airbenders who have chosen to dedicate themselves to the continuation of Air Nomad traditions. Seeing as he is the only living master Airbender in the world following Aang's passing, he becomes Korra's airbending teacher.

* BadassFamily: Tenzin's sister Kya inherited Katara's waterbending and although Bumi has no bending, he ''is'' a [[BadassNormal Commander in the Republic Military]].
** In terms of Tenzin and his family specifically; save for his wife Pema and newborn son Rohan (who Katara predicts will be a bender but is obviously too young for it now), they are the direct inheritors of Aang's native element.
* ElementalEyeColors: Tenzin, Ikki, and Meelo have GreyEyes as airbenders tend to have (although Ikki's have appeared blue-grey and brownish-grey depending on the light). Averted with Jinora who has brown eyes.
* ElementalPowers: As noted above:
** BlowYouAway: Tenzin and his children

* ShooOutTheClowns: While Tenzin is definitely not comic relief [[spoiler: in Episode 10 he and Pema escape Republic City with their children, who definitely ''are'' comic relief. It's then subverted in Episode 12 when Amon captures them offscreen.]]

* AppealToForce: Believes the only way to maintain peace and stability in her city is through the use of law enforcement. Also, tried to solve the LoveTriangle by [[MurderTheHypotenuse Imprisoning The Hypotenuse]].
* AmicableExes: Tenzin seems to think so. Korra's not so sure. Later on, she seems to warm up a little.
* AntiHero: [[SlidingScaleOfAntiHeroes Type]] [[GoodIsNotNice III]]. Especially cemented in "The Aftermath" when she [[spoiler: decides to handle things outside the law and take back her Metalbending officers]].
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Episode 6 shows that there's a VERY good reason she's the head of the Metalbending Police.
* {{Badass}}: It runs in the family, and it certainly shows. Practically all of her appearances prove that she is perhaps the most worthy of the title in either series.
** BadassLongcoat: Adopts one in episode 9, though she's given it up by the next episode.

* BuildingSwing: One utilization of her powers.

* [[spoiler:[[FaceDeathWithDignity Face De-Bending with Dignity]]: Unlike every single one of Amon's other victims, there are no protests or begs for mercy from Lin. She just calmly closes her eyes and accepts the inevitable.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: She rather viciously tells Korra that she hasn't done anything to deserve the gala Tarrlok throws her. While this is technically true as the party is a ploy by the councilor to butter her up [[spoiler: and shame her into joining his task force]], that's a little rough, Chief. It's later implied that she's giving Korra a hard time because she's bitter about her former relationship with Tenzin.

* NotSoDifferent: Tenzin implies that Lin was a lot like Korra at her age.
* [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]]: Best shown in episode 9, [[spoiler:where she pretty much single-handedly liberates her captured officers from the Equalist's prison, with only minimal help from the rest of the group. ''While injured''.]]

* TheComicallySerious: Frequently has these moments, particularly in his interactions with Korra and his children.

* HappilyMarried: To Pema.
* InkSuitActor: He bears more than a slight resemblance to his voice actor, J.K. Simmons.
* InTheBlood: As much as he tries to act the part of the serene air-bending master that he is, he is just as naturally expressive as Aang, and he has more than little of Katara's hot-bloodedness. To balance it out, he's inherited the rather sweet disposition they held in common.
* LastOfHisKind: Was this in the time between his father's death and Jinora's birth. Thankfully averted now.
* LightningBruiser: Whilst he may not look it at first, as an Airbending master, he has rapid reflexes, very high agility and extremely forceful air attacks. It is thanks to this that he is the only [[spoiler: Council member to escape capture by Amon]].
* MayDecemberRomance: He is 16 years senior to his wife Pema.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Sort of. His mastery of Airbending allows him a minor sense of anticipation for incoming attacks- by feeling disturbances in the flow of air around him that even allow him to detect electricity (see BadassBeard entry above). Granted, it doesn't always work.
* TheMentor: To Korra, to his children, and to the Air Acolytes.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: He's named after the fourteenth and current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
** OddNameOut: His siblings are named after Katara's mother and Aang's old friend. His name only fits with Aang's teacher, Gyatso, at a meta level.
* NoRespectGuy: A mild version. He's quite wise, but neither the Council, Korra, or Lin tend to listen to him very often.
* NotSoAboveItAll: He gets this in spades.
** Denounces pro-bending as "a mockery of the noble tradition of bending", but later on ends up cheering for Korra in an uncharacteristically enthusiastic manner during one of her matches, not unlike how his father would. Played with, though, in that he may have been cheering her successful DieOrFly moment. By episode 6 he's yelling at the referee for ignoring the Wolfbat's blatant fouls. When Lin comments on this, surprised that he even knows what constitutes a foul, he says he's been reading up on the rules since Korra joined the Fire Ferrets, apparently taking a greater interest in the sport than he'd like to admit.
** Also spends the first half of "A Leaf in the Wind" stressing to Korra that she needs to be patient, and then loses his own patience with her a short time later.
** Then, there was his failed relationship with Lin.
** And we get this gem when Korra and Tenzin confront [[spoiler: her replacement, Saikhan]]:
--->'''Korra:''' ''[grips his chin, moving his head up and down]'' You're officially the worst [[spoiler: Chief of Police]], ever!\\
'''Tenzin:''' Calm down Korra, I'll get this sorted out. We just need to be patient. ''[Both turn away before Tenzin quickly turns back.]'' But you really are the worst. ''[points]'' Ever!
* OnlySaneMan: Among the Council, he's the only one who realizes that that Tarrlok is untrustworthy and that his actions are causing far more harm then good. Unfortunately, his attempts to stop him are consistently outvoted.
* OpeningNarration: Like his mother did in the original series, he provides ''The Legend of Korra'''s opening narration.
* PapaWolf: Dear Lord, yes. Not just to his blood children but Team Korra as well. He will use his bending to its full power to protect them.
* ParentalSubstitute: While Korra's parents are still alive, they're still in the South Pole. Tenzin seems to be like an HonoraryUncle, and treats Korra much more warmly than all of the other authority figures (who either think she's a nuisance, or manipulate her). Korra also eats at the family table rather than with the air acolytes, suggesting a closer relationship than merely master/student.
* PowerTattoo
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Also the most socially ''responsible'' authority figure on the Council; despite representing at most a few dozen people, out of any of the Council members he's the one with most respect for the unrepresented non-benders and their rights. Indeed, he's the only one to speak up in favor or defense of them.
* TheStoic: Tries his best to be, but Korra and the plot often have [[NotSoStoic other plans]].
** NotSoStoic: Comes frequently at his expense, often subtle, but sometimes dramatic. It's become a RunningGag.
* StrokeTheBeard: Uncle Sokka would approve.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He's adult Zuko (minus the scar), right down to the voice.
**
In the finale, he's not even adult Zuko, he pretty much is Zuko a half-lucid moment, Korra mistakes him for Aang (having just with experienced a slightly different build (he looks a lot younger vision of Aang and his friends while unconscious).
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He tries to act like an enlightened and serious Zen master, but the universe simply won't allow him to stay that way for long.

* [[spoiler:[[FaceDeathWithDignity Face De-Bending with Dignity]]: Unlike every single one of Amon's other victims, there are no protests or begs for mercy from Lin. She just calmly closes her eyes and accepts the inevitable.]]

* MadeOfIron: Puns aside, Episode 6 shows she is this. After being knocked unconscious by electricity, she gets up in time to start chasing Amon with Korra. She is repeatedly shocked again by The Lieutenant, but doesn't let it stop her even when weakened prior.
* [[AFatherToHisMen A Mother To Her Men]]: She genuinely cares about the officers under her ranks. So, [[spoiler: when some are captured by Equalists, she is willing to resign her position as Chief of Police in order to go after them with any means necessary. She even managed to find them, but not soon enough to save them from Amon.]] Even after taking a level in niceness she's direct and decidedly brusque to Tenzin and Team Avatar, but speaking to her men in ''Out Of The Past'', her voice and eyes are gentler.
** MamaBear: She also goes to enormous lengths to protect Tenzin and his family. And to Team Avatar.
* [[spoiler:MoreExpendableThanYou: Tells Tenzin and family to escape and not worry about her, because they are the last of the airbenders, and wiping them out would end airbending forever.]]

[[caption-width-right:250: "Show a little more backbone!"]]
-> Voiced by Mindy Sterling

Daughter of Toph Beifong, and the head of Republic City's SWAT-like Metalbending Police. Forceful and uncompromising, Lin has a soft heart under her metal armour, and will do anything to protect the safety of Republic City.
----
* AppealToForce: Believes the only way to maintain peace and stability in her city is through the use of law enforcement.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Can use metalbending to make these.
* BuildingSwing: One utilization of her powers.
* ByTheBookCop: [[spoiler: Until she resolves to resign and rescue her officers outside the law]]
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: A failed one with Tenzin.
* DaChief: [[spoiler: Up until episode 7, where she turns in her badge so she can track down her captive men without restraint.]]
* [[spoiler:[[DyingMomentOfAwesome De-Bending Moment Of Awesome]]: Tearing an entire airship to shreds by herself in a HeroicSacrifice and then all but spitting in Amon's face when he offers to let her keep her bending in return for Korra's location.]]
* [[spoiler:DefiantToTheEnd]]: [[spoiler:Amon offers to let her keep her bending if she sells out the Avatar. [[ScrewYourUltimatum Her response]] is hardly a surprise.]]
* [[spoiler:DePower: In "Turning the Tides." Her bending is restored by Korra in "Endgame."]]
* DishingOutDirt: As a metalbender, this is a required base skill. She doesn't use it much.
** ExtraOreDinary: Her metalbending power.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: She directly confronts Korra in the interrogation room of the Metalbending Police HQ, knowing full well that Korra is the Avatar and has already mastered 3 elements, and still talks down to her with not a trace of fear or special treatment.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has two small scars on her cheek.
* GrandmaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave: Lin is very fit and good looking for a woman in her fifties. If not for her graying hair, we would never imagine her age.
* GrapplingHookPistol: In this case, the "pistol" is her metalbending.
* GreenEyes: A minty green like her mother's. Except without the severe cataracts that came with Toph's blindness.
** ElementalEyeColors: See above.
* [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice]]: [[spoiler:To save Tenzin's family, she attacks Amon's airships, bringing down one and forcing the other to withdraw. Amon captures her and tries to get her to reveal Korra's location in exchange for keeping her bending, but she refuses.]]
--> [[spoiler:'''Lin''']]: [[spoiler:Whatever happens to me... don't turn back!]]
** [[spoiler:SenselessSacrifice: They end up captured anyway.]]
* IronLady: [[AWorldwidePunomenon Pun intended.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While she's initially very disapproving of Korra's presence in Republic City, she's genuinely interested in keeping the peace.
* LadyOfWar: She continues to steal the show in most combat scenes. And she does it with a refined style.
* [[LikeFatherLikeSon Like Mother, Like Daughter]]: She is just as stubborn as her mother, but coming from that is a sense of right and wrong, [[spoiler:which leads her to resign as Chief of Police in order to track down her captured men outside the law.]] She is also seen using the same "Earth Sonar" we saw her mother use which allows her to [[spoiler:sense Hiroshi Sato's secret basement.]]
* LoveTriangle: Believe it or not, ''she'' was the second girl in Tenzin and Pema's love triangle.
** MamaBear
* [[spoiler:MoreExpendableThanYou: Tells Tenzin and family to escape and not worry about her, because they are the last of the airbenders, and wiping them out would end airbending forever.]]
* MundaneUtility: She can control [[spoiler:almost]] all metal. She uses this power to put her armor on, and [[CrowningMomentOfFunny zip Bolin's fly.]]
* NotSoDifferent: Tenzin implies that Lin was a lot like Korra at her age.
