* WalkingSpoiler: Just about every other boss monster was showcased in trailers, screenshots, and other promotional materials. The Ruined Dragon was not, and its dramatic entrance late in the story is set up as a big surprise.

* ExpyCoexistence: Wart was originally a KingKoopaCopy, being the antagonist of ''VideoGame/DokiDokiPanic'' and its equivalent of Bowser. He then appears in ''Super Mario Bros. 2'', putting him in the same universe as his main inspiration. His Spirit also appears in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate'', where Bowser is playable.

* KingKoopaCopy: One of the earliest examples. He debuts in the second (fifth in Japan, third historically) mainstream ''Super Mario'' game and is obviously meant to be Subcon's answer to Bowser: A large, menacing cold-blood character that aims to take over a whole land by force, terrorizing everyone with his own army of minions, the 8 bits.

** PlayedWith. On one hand, his scheme of taking a kingdom, and kidnapping the Princess is a lot like Bowser. On the other hand, Tatanga is [[TheNapoleon a little guy]] who relies on his spaceship to be intimidating.

* DubNameChange: Every single member, but the 8 bits were known as "Mamu-zoku" in Japan, which basically means Mamu Family or Mamu Tribe. As for the bosses from ''Doki Doki Panic'' specifically, Mouser was Don Churuge, Tryclyde was Gabucho, and Fryguy was Hībōbō.

A prehistoric creature fought several times by Mario and friends. Birdo (known as [[DubNameChange Catherine]] in Japan) is almost never seen without a distinctive pink ribbon, and has the power to spit projectile eggs out of her mouth. The [[AllThereInTheManual original instruction booklet]] [[ValuesDissonance from the 80's]] notes that Birdo is male but believes to be female, though later game localizations tend to go back-and-forth. Nowadays Birdo occasionally shows up in the ''VideoGame/MarioKart'' and ''Mario'' sports games, where she's usually paired off with Yoshi.

* DubNameChange: Catherine in Japan. This applies to her nickname, Cathie.[[note]]Birdo and Ostro (the ostrich enemy) also had their names mistakenly swapped in the ''Super Mario Bros. 2'' cast roll, which was only corrected in ''Super Mario Advance''.[[/note]]

* RetCanon: As of the 2023 movie, his name is officially "Spike" in Japan.

Knucklotec (if not the stone being, then the power inhabiting it) is strongly implied to be a god of the Sand Kingdom's civilization, given the amount of stone carvings of his face you see throughout the kingdom, and his name in Japan and China literally translates to "Tostarena God". Yet Mario overpowers him.

* OffModel: In his comic debut, he looked like a [[VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry Kremling]]. His second appearance was more accurate... yet still kind of off looking.

* DoesNotLikeShoes: The Broodals are barefoot except for Hariet.

* DoesNotLikeShoes: Similar to most of the other Broodals, she's barefoot. It's harder to tell because of the dress covering her feet, but when she's defeated, you can get a better view of them.

* DependingOnTheArtist: Each time he's appeared gives him a totally different look. In ''Wrecking Crew'', he was a portly overalls-wearing worker like Mario and Luigi, save his glasses and pointier nose. '''98'' ditches the beard for a mustache with a colored nose like Wario's and gives him a tank top and pants, while ''Mobile Golf'' shows him with a bushier beard and makes him stout, sticking him in a polo for the occasion.

* FormerlyFat: In Wrecking Crew '98, he is shown to have slimmed down.
