** BadassCape: And still wearing his brown cape from the second game.
* BodyguardBetrayal: Gets accused of this; [[spoiler: the truth is more complicated than that, see ThePromise below]].

* PapaWolf: [[spoiler: His promise to Arshtat is that he will look out for the Prince and Lym.]] Not blood related, but he follows it just as much.

* ShootTheDog: [[spoiler: Tear-jerkingly necessary]]
* SweetTooth: His TrademarkFavoriteFood? Cheesecake.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Taller than the prince, black hair and clothes, and a number of people discuss his prettiness.

* BrotherhoodOfFunnyHats: He was trained by the Black Dragon Clan of chefs, and is one of the 4 masters.
* ChekhovsGun: The legendary recipe he covets, explained below.
* FetchQuest: Pick up a strange fish. It can be randomly obtained from Subala's game.
** MementoMacguffin: He seeks to unlock the mysteries of the legendary ''mythical fish sashimi'', and will only join the Prince if he brings him the ''strange fish'', which can be caught when playing Subala's FishingMiniGame.
* ForegoneConclusion: Players familiar with ''Suikoden 2's'' epic CookingDuel (which occurs ''after'' the events of ''5'') will be familiar with what the future holds for Retso (and Shun Min). [[spoiler: Retso makes progress with the Sashimi, and after the war, he perfects the recipe, and locks it away. Years later, he meets the chef Jinkai, who convinces him to use the recipe. Shun Min disagreed with this and stole the recipe, giving it to her lover, ''Suikoden 2's'' Hai Yo, to keep safe. But [[DoomedByCanon she was killed afterwards]]. Retso blamed Hai Yo for her death and sent members of the Black Dragon Group after him to get the recipe back. But Hai Yo, who had joined Riou's castle in the Dunan Army, [[CookingDuel fought off chef after chef]]. Retso decides to handle things himself, and, using his artlike knife work and presentation skills, hypnotizes the judges to make them think he had made the perfect food. Retso takes the recipe and is about to leave, but Hai Yo tells him the "Moon Bird" recipe is just something to satisfy Jinkai's lust for power. Retso gives Hai Yo another chance, and says he'll return later. After Hai Yo learns Retso's trick, he comes back and Retso fights fair, but loses. Retso realizes Shun Min was right, and returns the recipe to Hai Yo for safekeeping. *Phew*]]
** FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:Retso in ''5'' is a mild-mannered father who worries that he's not a good father to Shun Min. When he appears in ''2'', he has become bitter due to Shun Min's death and serves the more antagonistic role against Hai Yo. [[HeelFaceTurn He got better in the end, thankfully.]]]]
*** EvilCostumeSwitch: [[spoiler:Retso in ''5'' can look a little goofy sporting UnusualEyebrows. Retso in ''2'' sports a BadassCape, badass mask that covers his mouth and a [[GoodScarsEvilScars scar on his eye]] that he looks more threatening.]]
* OddFriendship: With Logg. Logg envies Retso's parenting because Shun Min is a well behaved and polite little girl. Retso, however, admires Logg for letting Lun be a child.
* RecurringCharacter: With a new facial portrait this time.
* TeamChef: His speciality, once recruited.
* UnusualEyebrows: A family trait, shaped like quotation marks.
* YellowPeril: His look, the mustache, the beautiful daughter etc, but not his personality [[spoiler: although maybe in his ''Suikoden 2'' appearance]].

* ActionGirl: Even more than in her previous appearances.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: A native of Falena, she is obsessed with searching for Sindar Ruins and jumps at the chance to study the Ceras Lake ruins, when discovered.
* AscendedExtra: A minor character in I and II, she is recruited during the story this time.
* BadassBookworm: She's dedicated herself to studying the Sindar civilization. Which is the reason she's chosen to work with Zweig, as he's more knowledgeable on the subject, though he barely tolerates her. [[spoiler: In the end, she steals his research notes and runs off, alluding to the events in ''VideoGame/SuikodenI'']].
* MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours: She prefers her companions be stronger than her, and this time it's no different, challenging the Prince to a duel to test whether he is a worthy leader for her to follow.
** DuelBoss: You have to face her before she'll let you pass and won't take "no" for an answer.
** DefeatMeansFriendship: She warms up to the Prince considerably. By Stormfist, she's eagerly showing him Sindar tablets.
* NotSoDifferent: A particularly humorous example. When she and Viki got mad at Zweig for intruding on their conversation ''in the bath'', she agrees when Zweig points out that she would have done the same thing had ''she'' heard ''him'' talking about Sindar stuff. Poor Viki.
* RecurringCharacter: ''Suikoden 5'' marks her 3rd appearance in the series so far, but it's chronologically her first.
* SuperiorSpecies: In 5, she claims to be a descendant of the lost Sindar race, though she admits to not being certain of it. However, there's evidence that suggest she may be right, such as the [[spoiler: eye symbol on her circlet]], which is similar in appearance to the Twilight Rune and the same symbol can be found in each of the Sindar ruins.
* TheRival: With Killey & Zweig when it comes to Sindar ruin hunting.
** TeethClenchedTeamwork: Moreso with Zweig in this game, as he keeps her on a very short leash when it comes to imparting information. She tolerates this behavior as she is ''desperate'' to gain access to his secret research laboratory.
** SoLongSuckers: [[spoiler: Her ending in ''5'' reveals she finally managed to steal his notes, heading North to the Scarlet Moon Empire, which leads into her story in ''Suikoden 1''.]]
* WhipItGood: Another change of weapon for her, since V takes place before I and II. This time she wields a bullwhip.
* WouldntHitAGirl: Lorelai hates it when men refuse to fight women and [[WhatTheHellHero will call the Prince out on it]], if he tries to turn down her challenge.

* AdventurerArchaeologist: He came to Falena in search of Sindar Ruins.
* {{Badass}}
** BadassBookworm: Smart and knows his Sindar.
** BadassCape: And wears a lovely red cape.
* DualWielding: In the second game. In this one, he's throwing knives.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a scar across the bridge of his nose.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: They are part of his native heritage, representing his tribe's legendary "Red Bird".
** AllEncompassingMantle: In black and deep crimson.
** NiceHat: An awesome, sweeping, finned trilby.
* LonersAreFreaks: Lorelai certanly thinks so.
* MightAsWellNotBeInPrisonAtAll: Downplayed. The Godwins had locked him up in Agate prison when the Prince first meets him, but he casually picks the lock and strolls off after a brief chat. However, the prison was in the middle of a river, so he was still stuck there until The Prince revealed the hidden underground passage.
* MysteriousPast: It's something called the Crimson Bird. Zweig is considerably intrigued.
* RecurringCharacter: This is his 2nd appearance in the series, but chronologically, his first.
* TheRival: With Lorelai, when it comes to Sindar ruin hunting.
** TeethClenchedTeamwork: Lorelai really isn't happy to have him on board, after the Prince recruits him.
* TheSnarkKnight: You can almost see his eye-rolling when he tells Cius he knows the guard came throw a hole because of the mud on his shoes.
* TheStoic: His bath scene with other silent-type characters consists mostly of '.........'
* TheUnfettered: Questing for the Sindar treasure is his whole life.

* AscendedExtra: Jeane is actually a bit more involved to the plot rather than being just your MsFanservice recruitable rune mistress that has no involvement in the plot. She can also help you recruit Eresh.
* BadassLongRobe: Albeit hers is EXTREMELY abbreviated in this game.
* CrystalBall: All Rune Masters have one.
* HeelFaceTurn: She works with the Godwins at the beginning of the game, but quickly gets fed up with their tactics and agenda and quits. The Prince can hire her afterwords.
* HelloNurse: InUniverse. No one can stop gushing about her.
* HotWitch: Magic is her speciality. She is always encountered as a rune mistress.
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: Turns up in ''every single'' Suikoden title, regardless of space or time differences. Whether they're all the same Jeane or a bunch of identical women throughout history is one of the enduring mysteries of the franchise.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: She's not at all preturbed by her outfit, and even enjoys Lym's ranting.
* MsFanservice: For the whole Suikoden series.
* [[MagicalGirlWarrior Magical Lady Warrior]]: Graceful and dignified.
* MysteriousPast: No one knows where or ''when'' she came from.
* OperaGloves: Hard to see, but they're there and very yellow.
* PeekABangs: She's often drawn with her hair (sexily) over one eye.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Heavily speculated, unconfirmed as always.
* RecurringCharacter: There is a Rune Mistress named Jeane in every game. Although this one has pink hair.
* SecretIdentity: Apparently, she has a 'true form' which is not visible to humans, and she wishes to keep it that way. Or so she says.
* ShesGotLegs
* StatuesqueStunner
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her outfits have become more and more outrageously flimsy and 5's is perhaps the skimpiest yet, consisting of a few well-placed strips of gold cloth and nothing else. According to the art book, only 6% of her body is covered.
* WitchSpecies: Possibly.
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Pink Hair]] Instead of being a white-haired girl like her counterparts in the other games, she has pink hair. WordOfGod is that this is to distinguish her from the Falenan royal family.

* TheDitz: It might be the TimeTravel, but it's clear Viki's not all there in the head.
* {{Dojikko}}: Poor clumsy Viki!
* MagicalGirlWarrior: From Suikoden 2 onwards, she can be added to the active party. She has excellent magic stats, combined with the Blinking Rune's unique magic attacks.
* MysteriousPast: No one really knows where she came from.
* PurityPersonified: She's nothing but sweet and loving.
* RecurringCharacter: Viki has been in every game. Given that she teleports through time and space, it's justified.
* RunningGag: She ''never'' gets to finish the banquet meals after the games.
* TemporalParadox: Especially evident in 5. Her odd teleportation patterns cause confusion for those she comes across. For example, Lorelai, having first met Viki in the Twilight Forest in Falena, is surprised when Viki does not recognize her later when fighting together in the Sun Rune War, failing to understand that her first meeting with Viki was the result of Viki teleporting from several years in the future. As a result, at that time, she had never seen Lorelai before in her life.
* WarpWhistle: Her speciality. As bearer of the Blinking Rune, she can (most of the time, see below) transport the hero and his party to any destination previously visited.
** TeleporterAccident: Her abilities can be hit and miss, occasionally landing the characters in completely random locations.
** MalfunctionMalady: The above teleport mistakes are accompanied with a little sneeze!
* WhiteMagicianGirl: Long hair, pretty dress, gentle personality; the only glitch is her Blinking Rune is transporation instead of healing, but still a supporting power.
* WideEyedIdealist: Despite her clutziness, she's very keen to help out.

* AmuletOfConcentratedAwesome: She is the keeper of the Gate Rune, a True Rune that has the power to open portals to other worlds and dimensions. It was split in two following an attack on her village of the Gate Rune Clan by Harmonia. She kept the back half, Windy kept the front half.
* BlindSeer: Her role is to provide astrological projections.
* CoolTeacher: To her young apprentice, Luc.
* EyesAlwaysShut
* HermitGuru: She lives in splendid isolation on the Magician's Isle, away from the prying eyes of Windy.
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: Like Jeane and Viki, she is a constant presence is the Suikoden world and turns up in every single game.
* MysteriousPast: She is aquainted with Zerase, acknowledging her when she first appears before the Prince.
* PowerFloats
* RapunzelHair
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: The power of the Gate Rune has granted her unnaturally long life.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Zerase acknowledges that she has been "given her an order" when Leknaat asks her to aid the Prince, implying that she is possibly the leader of their [[TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness mysterious group]], which includes: Jeane, Zerase, Eresh and Simeon in the series thus far.

Added DiffLines:

* GreenEyedMonster: If recruited, he confesses to the Prince that he was deeply envious of Gizel Godwin, who was better than him at ''[[TheAce everything]]''. * EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He does deeply care for Luserina and Euram. Of course, he cares mostly about how to use their skills to his advantage, but some scenes may imply that he truly loves them (for instance, he seems geniunely heartbroken when [[spoiler:his daughter abandons him because she's disgusted by his actions]] and, later in the game, [[when Sialeeds tells him she wants to talk about Luserina, he's eager to hear news about her]]).
