!! [[SelfDemonstrating/SpyroTheDragonClassic Spyro]]
[[quoteright:295:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0-spyro-pose-1_4686.gif]]
The Purple One himself. He's a young dragon living in the Dragon Realms. He can do the usual dragon things: Breathing fire, flying, hitting things with his horns... In the first game, he saved the world because he was the only dragon not transformed into crystal. After that, though, he quickly became a member of the Frequent World-Saver's Club.

->'''Voiced by:''' Carlos Alazraqui for the first game, Tom Kenny for ''Ripto's Rage'', ''Year of The Dragon'' and ''Enter the Dragonfly'', and Jess Harnell for ''A Hero's Tail''. In Japan, he was voiced by Akiko Yajima.
----
* {{Badbutt}}: In the first game, he was rather cocky and overconfident, thinking that fighting Gnasty Gnorc would only require making his butt extra crispy. He mellows out a little bit in the second game, and becomes quite the {{Badass}}.
** BadassAdorable: In the second game onwards.
* BagOfSpilling: Averted. All of the powerups he purchases from Moneybags in the second game are retained in the third (with the exception of the [[GameBreaker superflame powerup]]).
* BerserkButton: Threaten to auction a dragon egg after he went through hell to get most of them? You're only asking for trouble, [[MoneyDearBoy Money]][[{{Jerkass}} bags.]]
** Also, don't hurt his friends. If you do... well, how do you like your butt? [[KillItWithFire Burnt, well done, or cremated?]]
* BreakingTheFourthWall: He makes quite a few nods to it, most notably in the first game.
* BreathWeapon: Well, he ''is'' a dragon.
* CelibateHero
-->'''Spyro''': It's a sad sight, Sparx. Another noble warrior falls victim to the plague of love.
** Though he does show something of an attraction to Elora.
* DeadpanSnarker
* ElementalPowers: In the original few games, he stuck with fire a lot, but as the series went on, he branched out. Including into ''bubble.''
* EvilLaugh: He does one after defeating Gnasty Gnorc in the original game.
* {{Flight}}: He's usually restricted to just gliding, but with a powerup he can fly freely (but often with time limits).
* KidHero: He seems to be twelve in the third game, though it's unknown how dragons age so he might be older than he looks. Even than he doesn't seem any older than mid-teens.
* MascotWithAttitude: Befitting a platformer from the 90s.
* TheOtherDarrin: He went from Creator/CarlosAlazraqui (in the original game) to Creator/TomKenny.
* PapaWolf: To the Dragon Eggs in ''YOTD''. Just ask the Sorceress and [[spoiler:Moneybags]].
* PlayingWithFire: Of course.
* PreMortemOneLiner: "Happy holidays, fat boy!"
* ShipTease: With Elora, but he doesn't act on it.
* UseYourHead: No matter the game, his two basic attacks are usually "fire breath" and "hit it really hard with his horns." After the second game he also gets a headbutt-based variant of a GroundPound.
* WouldHitAGirl: If they're evil enough, he has no problem torching female baddies as well.

!!Sparx
[[quoteright:250:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sparx_7539.jpg]]
Spyro's best friend, and his health meter. With firefly magic, he keeps Spyro safe from harm, and picks up gems for him. Inquisitive and helpful, he and Spyro stick up for one another through thick and thin.

->'''Voiced by:''' André Sogliuzzo.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: He has a few levels in the third game dedicated all to himself.
* [[FairyCompanion Dragonfly Companion]]
* PlatformingPocketPal
* SuddenlyVoiced: In ''A Hero's Tail'', he suddenly started speaking intelligibly.
* TookALevelInBadass: In ''YOTD'', he becomes playable and saves quite a few eggs himself.
* TheUnintelligible: In ''Year of the Dragon'' and ''Enter the Dragonfly'', he only talks in buzzy kazoo-noises. Though if you make the noises yourself, you'll find that they actually do match up to the on-screen text.

!!Gnasty Gnorc
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gnastygnorc_2464.jpg]]
The main villain from the first game; a powerful and brutal gnorc who was banished from the Dragon Kingdom and allowed to reign free over the dragon dumping grounds, which became known as Gnasty's World. When a dragon called him ugly on a TV interview, [[DisproportionateRetribution he reacted by turning every dragon (except Spyro) into crystal, and turning their gems into gnorc minions.]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Michael Gough.
----
* BigBad: Of the first game. He's later TheDragon to Red in ''Hero's Tail''
* CarryABigStick: He's always seen with a large mace which doubles as a magic wand.
* DemotedToDragon: In ''Hero's Tail'', he's Red's second-in-command. Surprisingly, it takes a lot more effort to defeat him as TheDragon than when he was the BigBad.
* DisproportionateRetribution: As mentioned above, he enslaves all the dragons because they called him ''ugly''. With that said, he was probably just looking for an excuse to use that spell, anyway...
* FlatCharacter: Follows the usual role of a brutish dopey BigBad, but unlike successors such as Ripto or The Sorceress, it gets little development outside the opening cutscene.
* GetBackHereBoss: He spends most of his boss fight running away from you.
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: Red polka-dot boxers in ''A Hero's Tail''. They're his weak point.
* InformedAttribute: His strength -- he goes down in ''two hits''. For clarification, that's one less hit than the gnorc thief enemies in the ''first level hub''.
** More explicit in ''A Hero's Tail''; when he pounds his mace to the ground, it's strong enough to send large lumps of rock falling from the ceiling, as well as create shockwaves. He also takes a lot more effort to take down compared to the two hits it took originally.
* OffModel: His appearance {particularly his armor) in the first game is very different from his artwork, as seen in a portrait in "Gnasty's Loot".
* PowerUpMagnet: His ability to grab gems.
* ShockAndAwe: In ''A Hero's Tail'' he has trapped a sort of thunder-fairy in his mace, and thus he can cast lightning bolts and zap you.
* TookALevelInBadass: Played with. He's DemotedToDragon in ''A Hero's Tail'', but he's considerably stronger and takes more hits to deal with.

!!Hunter
[[quoteright:195:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hunterspyro_2546.jpg]]
An anthropomorphic cheetah and another one of Spyro's good buddies, this, er, [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin hunter]] lends his bow to Spyro's cause. Other than that--[[DependingOnTheWriter well...]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Gregg Berger in the ''Ripto's Rage'', ''Year of the Dragon'' and ''Enter the Dragonfly'', and Jess Harnell in ''A Hero's Tail''.
----
* AscendedExtra: In his first appearance, he exists just to offer the odd tutorial and [[NiceJobBreakingItHero accidentally start the whole Ripto takeover in the first place]]. By the third game he's playable in some levels. He's also one of few characters from the original games to be reimagined and reused in the reboot.
* BadassNormal: Hunter doesn't have magic, but excels in physical ability and can work well with vehicles and machinery as well.
* ButtMonkey: Getting his feet locked in solid rock, thrown into a wall, stuck in a hole, battered with attacks aimed at Spyro, being kidnapped...
* CastHerd: With Elora and the Professor in the second game, though he is Spyro's right hand man by the third.
* CatsHateWater: Pops up once or twice in the third game, which is bizarre as he's quite happy to scuba dive on other occasions.
* CloudCuckoolander
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: When he does fight, he's actually pretty good at it, usually employing his bow, but also using anything from laser pistols to a fighter plane, or sometimes just going toe to toe.
* DatingCatwoman: With Bianca, prior to her HeelFaceTurn.
* DependingOnTheWriter: How tough he is.
* FunnyAnimal: He's an anthropomorphic cheetah.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Spyro seem to become this by the third game.
* LovableCoward: Sometimes he's like this. In the second game, when Ripto steals the power crystal from the Professor, Elora tells him to do something to stop him. His reply?
-->"Uh... [[BadBadActing Hey! Give that back!]] ...Well, I tried."
** CowardlyLion
* TheRival: Albeit a [[FriendlyRival good-natured one]], as he quickly comes to respect Spyro's capabilities during the second game.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Nuanced example, he's fairly competent, but still a ditz who views himself as TheAce in sports.
* TookALevelInBadAss: From a bumbling sports fan in the second game to a competent warrior in ''A Hero's Tail''. Not to say that he was completely helpless before then, however, considering how he could craft vehicles and was able to combat the rabbit-monster that Bianca had accidentally created in ''Year of the Dragon''.
* WeaponOfChoice: Projectile weapons, specifically bow and arrows. He even used one in ''Spyro 2'' in the Fracture Hills level.
* VocalEvolution: Gregg Berger's take became less gruff after the second game, gaining a more relaxed 'surfer dude' dialect.

!!Elora
[[quoteright:172:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elorafaun_2648.jpg]]
A Faun from Avalar, and the series' first female character, she appears in ''Ripto's Rage'' as an associate of Hunter and the Professor. She is the one who tells Spyro to collect the Talismans and guides him on his quest to defeat Ripto.

->'''Voiced by:''' Melissa Disney in ''Ripto's Rage'' and Carolyn Lawrence in ''Year of the Dragon''.
----
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Cameo at the end of ''Year of the Dragon'' aside, she's never mentioned again after ''Ripto's Rage''.
* FaunsAndSatyrs: She's a faun, you dork!
* FirstGirlWins: More like Only Girl Wins, but she and Spyro do seem to have an implied interest in each other. She not only gives Spyro a little kiss at the end of ''Ripto's Rage'', but spends a romantic night with him watching fireworks in ''Year of the Dragon'', after watching Hunter and Bianca hook up.
* PutOnABus: Despite Hunter, Moneybags and the Professor having large roles in the games post-''Ripto's Rage'', Elora disappeared entirely except for a cameo at the end of ''Year of the Dragon''.
* RedheadInGreen
** SignificantGreenEyedRedhead
* SmoochOfVictory: She gives Spyro a little peck on the nose after he defeats Ripto.
* TheBusCameBack: After being entirely absent for the whole game, she appears in a cutscene at the end of ''Year of the Dragon'' to celebrate Spyro's latest victory.
** BackForTheFinale: Her appearance was at the end of Insomniac's last Spyro game.

!!The Professor
[[quoteright:142:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/professor_hero_9555.jpg]]
Another of Spyro's associates from Avalar, the Professor is a mole who is an unrivalled expert in superportal technology. He has a base in the Forgotten Worlds and later seems to move to the Dragon Worlds full-time. He has close ties to two other characters - his ex-lab experiment Agent 9, and his nephew Blink.

->'''Voiced by:''' Tom Kenny in ''Ripto's Rage'' and ''Year of the Dragon'', and by Michael Gough in ''A Hero's Tail''.
----
* AbsentMindedProfessor: Especially in the later games.
* EverybodyCallsHimBarkeep: Nobody calls him anything but "Professor."
* IdleAnimation: Instead of just standing around like most characters, he constantly writes on a clipboard, thinking out loud, saying "Nooooo...," until he has a EurekaMoment, and let's out a big "A-HA!"
* MissionControl: For Agent 9 in his world.
* NoNameGiven: See EverybodyCallsHimBarkeep.
* TheProfessor: Of course.

!!Moneybags
[[quoteright:250:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moneybags_6959.jpg]]
A greedy bear from Avalar whose main purpose throughout the series is to extort gems from Spyro (sometimes in ludicrous amounts) in exchange for services (e.g. unlocking levels, opening passages and teaching Spyro abilities) essential for progression. In ''Year Of The Dragon'' he is found in the Forgotten Realms where he [[FaceHeelTurn apparently works for The Sorceress]], though he is willing to help Spyro in return for a bribe.

->'''Voiced by:''' Milton James in ''Ripto's Rage'', Neil Ross in ''Year of the Dragon'' and Jess Harnell in ''A Hero's Tail''.
----
* AffablyEvil: Pretty polite for an ArmsDealer and kidnapper.
* ArmsDealer: According to some of his dialogue regarding the Zephyr/Breeze Harbor conflict.
* AssholeVictim: It's hard to feel bad for Moneybags when he gets his comeuppance, considering the fact that he's a greedy dick who only cares about money and forces you to pay him Gems to access other areas and abilities.
* BearsAreBadNews: For your wallet and attempts to thwart the current villain.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: In ''Year of the Dragon''. Say no to him in Icy Peak, and he'll ask Spyro if he's saving up for another sequel. [[CrowningMomentOfFunny Hilarious at the time,]] [[FunnyAneurysmMoment but it soon stopped being funny]] [[FranchiseZombie given what happened next.]]
* BrokenBridge: Which he'll fix for a fee, of course. At one point he even claims [[LampshadeHanging bridges are his most profitable business]].
* CashGate
* TheChewToy: He is systematically humiliated (much to the amusement of the players) in ''Year Of The Dragon'', possibly as karmic payback for joining up with The Sorceress.
** In 2, if he appears in a cutscene, chances are he's only there to [[AmusingInjuries get hurt]].
** At the end of the second and third games, Spyro gets all the gems he'd given to Moneybags back. In the second game, it's his reward for defeating Ripto, whereas in the third, Spyro beats them out of him upon learning that Moneybags plans on auctioning a dragon egg in Avalar.
* DemotedToExtra: He only appears once in ''Enter the Dragonfly'', charging Spyro to cross a bridge which costs a piddling 200 gems. He's still mentioned in the manual despite this, probably owing to the fact that the game was not finished and the developers had intended to use him more.
* EnemyToAllLivingThings: He brings it on himself, though it is noteworthy that the game [[BewareTheNiceOnes picks exceptionally docile characters for him to piss off]] (the usually reserved Sgt. Bird even saves his ammo and delays an escape attempt just so he can fire it all on the bear). WorthIt.
* FaceHeelTurn: He was never ''good'' per se, but he's TheQuisling.
* {{Greed}}: It often comes back to bite him.
* HonestJohnsDealership: While his business to Spyro is honest, he is also a bit of a swindler. He sold mayonaisse to the Sorceress, saying it was sunscreen.
* {{Jerkass}}: Moneybags is, all and all, a jerk who will do anything for money without any care for morals or ethics. He's rather affable despite this - whenever he gets certain kinds of misfortune, that is.
* MeaningfulName: He is usually seen carrying a bag with the "$" symbol (or a picture of a gem).
* LaserGuidedKarma: In both games. It's better in the third game because you get to give it to him.
* [[AdamSmithHatesYourGuts Moneybags Hates Your Guts]]:
* NoHeroDiscount
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Evil sorcerer threatening to take over Moneybags' homeland? The dragon summoned to free the place has to pay just to move on in his quest. Evil sorceress planning on kidnapping unborn dragons for her own plans? Join her side and charge the same dragon, betraying both sides for profit!
* TheQuisling: In Year Of The Dragon, assisting the Sorceress for, of course, MoneyDearBoy.
* SmugSnake
* UnderestimatingBadassery: To the characters he's meant to guard. Most notably [[GeniusBruiser Bently]], as he calls him DumbMuscle, yet he has [[SesquipedalianLoquaciousness quite the vocabulary]]. [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown And the muscle to back it up.]]

!!Bianca
[[quoteright:141:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bianca_dragonfly_9440.jpg]]
A rabbit who starts out as TheDragon (no pun intended) to The Sorceress in ''Year of the Dragon'', but after a HeelFaceTurn falls in love with Hunter and becomes one of Spyro's allies. A skilled sorceress herself, her magical abilities have proven to be helpful several times.

->'''Voiced by:''' Pamela Hayden.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: Something of a foreshadowing she wasn't villain material.
* BlackCloak[=/=]InTheHood: Her attire while she still worked under the Sorceress.
* ButtMonkey: Her spells often go wrong or turn on her. She spent most of her first appearance as an abused bumbling minion to the Sorceress.
* {{Chickification}}: Bianca has been subject to some... [[BrokenBase controversy]] in the later games, where her formerly badass but somewhat {{Adorkable}} personality is replaced by a comparatively weak, stereotypical female one, only showing up to be the TokenGirl or to use her DeusExMachina spells.
* TheComicallySerious
* DefrostingIceQueen: She warms up to Spyro after too many beratings from the Sorceress.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: See MyGodWhatHaveIDone below for details.
** Granted, part of it was due to Bianca [[MinionWithAnFInEvil not being all that evil to begin with]], [[WellIntentionedExtremist as she simply wanted to restore her homeland.]]
* GoodCostumeSwitch: She drops the black cloak just before her complete HeelFaceTurn.
* HeelFaceTurn: Later on in her first appearance.
* HowDoIShotWeb: Still training as a magician and thus some of her spells don't quite end up as planned.
* HumanoidFemaleAnimal: Most evident in ''Enter The Dragonfly''.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: While working for the Sorceress. She repeatedly tries to pull off a [[JerkAssFacade villainous facade]] in front of the heroes in an attempt to scare them off, though constantly flops due to her meek and clumsy demeanor.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Her reaction to the Sorceress announcing that she wanted the baby dragons for their wings, considering that Bianca had helped her to achieve this goal.
* RighteousRabbit: Ultimately. She ''tried'' to be menacing initially, [[MinionWithAnFInEvil but wasn't all that convincing.]]
* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: While acting as the Sorceress' toadie, she is indiscriminately torched in the ass by Spyro and literally chewed up and spat out by a monster she created.
* SycophanticServant[=/=]TheDragon: To the Sorceress, at least at first.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Starts off as such, stealing Dragon Eggs so as to replenish her world with magic. She makes a Face Turn when she finds out her master is...not so well intentioned.
* VocalEvolution: Pamela Hayden gave Bianca a more cheery and helium pitched voice in ''Enter The Dragonfly''.
* WomenAreWiser: She shares more flaws with Hunter than she'd like to admit (clumsy, gullible, occasional bluff and bluster) but does at least seem to have a few more IQ points.

!!Sheila
[[quoteright:230:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sheilakangaroo_5283.jpg]]
The first unlockable ally in ''Year of the Dragon''. Sheila is an [[KangaroosRepresentAustralia Austrialian-accented Kangaroo]] who lives on a mountain with her three goat friends, who she been protects and takes care of. In ''Year Of The Dragon'', she (along with all other playable characters except for Spyro and Sparx) was captured and imprisoned by the Sorceress' Rhynocs. After Spyro pays Moneybags to release her, Sheila becomes Spyro's ally against the Sorceress, [[LaserGuidedKarma after giving Moneybags some well deserved payback]].

->'''Voiced by:''' Edita Brychta.
----
* ActionGirl: A very competent fighter.
* BadassAdorable: She's a kangaroo, for crying out loud.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's a friendly and pleasant lass, but won't hesitate to trample any Rhynoc she encounters.
* TheChick
* DoubleJump
* GoombaStomp: One of her main forms of attack.
* KangaroosRepresentAustralia
* KickChick: Her entire moveset revolves around her powerful kicks and stomps.
* MyFistForgivesYou: After Moneybags frees her, she assures no hard feelings...before buck kicking him hard into a nearby wall.
* TeamMom: Seems to take this role toward the goats of Sheila's Alp.

!! Sgt. James Byrd
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sgtbyrd_7166.jpg]]
The second unlockable ally in ''Year of the Dragon''. Sgt. Byrd is a flying [[EverythingsBetterwithPenguins penguin]] who was raised and trained by hummingbird soldiers, and has a secret relationship with a fairy from Charmed Ridge. The Sorceress captured him for [[NoodleIncident 'letting off rockets in the Fireworks Factory']], as well as leading an uprising against her. He is later freed by Spyro, who he helps in fighting the Sorceress with his use of shoulder-mounted rocket launchers and dropping bombs on foes.

->'''Voiced by:''' Tom Kenny in "Year of the Dragon" and Jess Harnell in ''A Hero's Tail''.
----
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He ''is'' a sergeant after all.
* AnOfficerAndAGentleman: Sometimes.
* BadassAdorable: He's a flying penguin... with missile launchers.
* BestServedCold: Saves breaking out of his cage because he has limited ammunition [[GameplayAndStorySegregation (doesn't stop him in the games, though)]] and he wanted to save it for blasting Moneybags.
* DeathFromAbove: He can pick up things with his legs and then drop them down to an enemy below.
* {{Flight}}: His is less restricted than Spyro's (when the latter's not getting in his flying powerup, anyways).
* InterspeciesRomance: His girlfriend, Isabelle, is one of the fairies from Charmed Ridge.
* TheLancer
* MacrossMissileMassacre: As stated before, one of his main combat methods are his shoulder-mounted rocket launchers.
* TheStoic: Much of the time he speaks in a professional matter common among military personal.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: While it is G-rated BloodlessCarnage, the fact James relies heavily on explosives makes him the most destructive of Spyro's allies.

!! Bentley
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bentleyyeti_1825.jpg]]
The third unlockable ally in ''Year of the Dragon''. Bentley is a large yeti-like creature who wields a massive icy club and a vocabulary range to match. He lives with and protects his younger brother Bartholomew. He's been known to have a liking for magic shows and the noble sport of boxing. He lends Spyro his assistance after the dragon buys his freedom from Moneybags, and delivers a well-deserved smackdown to the bear.

->'''Voiced by:''' Neil Ross in ''Year of the Dragon'' and Fred Tatasciore in ''A Hero's Tail''.
----
* BadassAdorable: A giant yeti.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Normally a nice guy, but if you mess with his little brother, he ''will'' bring down the thunder.
* BigBrotherInstinct: To his little brother, Bartholomew. It appears that Bentley is responsible for [[PromotionToParent raising him as well]].
* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti
* TheBigGuy[=/=]GeniusBruiser
* CarryABigStick: His WeaponOfChoice.
* MightyGlacier: He's very slow and can't jump very high, but he's the only character who can break hardened doors and chests without powerups.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: His revenge on Moneybags.
* OneManArmy: It took ''two dozen'' rhynocs to take him down.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: He tends to talk like this, especially in his introductory cutscene.
-->'''Bentley: ''[to Moneybags]''''' Why, you brazenly avaricious, duplicitous, larcenous ursine!
* TookALevelInDumbass: Compare his original characterisation of a GeniusBruiser to his one shot NPC appearance in ''Hero's Tail''. His quest in ''Attack of the Rhynocs'' also gives the impression that he lost his smarts and education for that game, too.

!! Agent 9
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/agent9_5154.jpg]]
The fourth and final unlockable ally in ''Year of the Dragon''. Agent 9 is a hyperactive laser-wielding monkey who was the Professor's student and lab assistant, with an itchy trigger finger and a marked dislike of Rhynocs. He can also pick up bombs for use against tougher enemies and obstacles. After Spyro frees him from imprisonment, he's ecstatic to help Spyro in his campaign against the Sorceress and her Rhynoc armies. Just as soon has Moneybags has [[BulletDancing what's coming to him.]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Richard Tatum.
----
* BadassNormal: Relies more heavily on technological weaponry compared to Spyro and his friends, and has no special abilities beyond that.
* BloodKnight
* EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys
* EvilLaugh: Does this when he finds the [[MoreDakka powerup]] mentioned below.
* FrickinLaserBeams: Uses a laser pistol as his main method of attack.
* {{Keet}}: Especially in his introduction.
* MoreDakka: Can find a powerup that gives him this in his section of Fireworks Factory.
* MotorMouth
* ThrowDownTheBomblet
* TriggerHappy: Gunning down rhynocs is his favorite pastime.

!!Ripto
[[quoteright:265:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ripto_9988.jpg]]
The main villain of the second game. Ripto had enlisted Crush and Gulp to wage war before he was accidentally warped to Avalar by Hunter. Upon arrival, he set about enslaving the worlds in which his reign brought disaster upon Avalar until he was eventually defeated by Spyro. A vertically challenged grump prone to tantrums, Ripto returned for several face offs with Spyro afterwards.

->'''Voiced by:''' Gregg Berger.
----
* ArchEnemy: Not initially, but eventually ascended to being Spyro's most prominent nemesis pre-reboot. Rather fittingly, his personal rivalry towards Spyro is the most developed out of the RoguesGallery as well.
* BerserkButton: '''[[PunctuatedForEmphasis I! HATE! DRAGONS!]]'''
* BreakoutVillain: Compared to the rest of the original RoguesGallery that are either one shots or DemotedToExtra at best, Ripto not only reappeared but held onto the role of BigBad in four titles (as well as series-representing villain in ''SpyroOrangeTheCortexConspiracy'').
* BigBad: Of ''Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage''. Returns as the BigBad of ''Season of Flame'', ''Attack of the Rhynocs'', and ''Enter The Dragonfly''.
* CardCarryingVillain
* DisneyVillainDeath: In the final battle, he tries to flee via a mechanical bird. But after a dogfight with Spyro, he dies when he falls into a pit of boiling lava which was under the arena. However, he ''somehow'' survived that and returned for his revenge in the games mentioned above.
* EvilIsHammy: Ripto is constantly shouting.
* EvilSorcerer: Played straight in the second game.
* HighCollarOfDoom: A massive one compared to his head.
* LargeHam: If you try to hit him with a standard flame breath of charge attack in the final battle against him in ''Ripto's Rage'', he'll leap up and yell 'NO!", even though no damage is actually dealt to him this way.
* LaughablyEvil
* TheNapoleon: Compare the height of him to the height of his cronies.
* OhCrap: He get's this reaction once Spyro collects all the orbs during his final boss battle.
* ObviouslyEvil: Just look at his ridiculously high collar and black cape.
* OneWingedAngel: At the end of the final boss battle of ''Enter The Dragonfly'', he turns into a gigantic troll-like monster to try and kill Spyro.
* ShoutOut: His name is similar to the katakana for "Spyro".
* UnexplainedRecovery: How ''did'' he survive the lava pit?
* VillainousBreakdown: When defeated in ''Enter The Dragonfly'', he throws a fit and yells about how much he hates dragons before escaping.

!!Crush
[[quoteright:250:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crush_4565.jpg]]
One of Ripto's minions next to Gulp. He wields a club as a weapon. He is defeated while battling Spyro when he accidentally causes rubble to fall from the ceiling, the rubble burying him.

->'''Voiced by:''' Gregg Berger
----
* TheBrute
* BoisterousBruiser: Played fairly straight.
* DumbassNoMore: The epilogue to the second game revealed that he went on to improve himself through education, learning such concepts as 1+1=2.
* CoDragons: With Gulp, to Ripto.
* TheDitz : Even among many other examples of DumbMuscle, he stands out as being spectacularly stupid. When told to go through a portal -- a technology so simple that you just walk through it -- he stares at it in puzzlement, has no idea how to use it, and simply shakes his head in bewilderment when the fairies remove the orbs powering it.
* DumbMuscle: He loves using that club of his, but falls for fairly obvious tricks as a result.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His reliance on the club is used against him during his boss fight. Namely, it's tendency to [[RocksFallEveryoneDies loosen the ceiling.]]
* HulkSpeak: When he does speak; in his debut appearance, he never said a word and simply made animal noises.
* SuddenlyVoiced

!!Gulp
[[quoteright:238:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crush_1012.gif]]
One of Ripto's minions next to Crush. He has two giant laser cannons strapped to his back. He is defeated while battling Spyro, but returns in the sequel.

->'''Voiced by:''' Gregg Berger.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Which reveals his HiddenDepths, namely that he would love to be a dancer who can cook.
* {{BFG}}: The laser cannons mounted on his back.
* BigEater: His most distinguishing characteristic. He begins the game by accidentally eating Ripto's scepter, is promised his favorite food (fairies) as a reward for helping Ripto, and begins many of his attacks by swallowing the required explosives (and can even heal himself by chowing down on the fodder that you could otherwise use yourself). Even his mechanical replacement in Ripto's fight copies his eating mannerisms.
* TheBrute
* BoisterousBruiser
* BackForTheFinale: As a mechanical body that assists Ripto in his boss battle.
* CoDragons: With Crush to Ripto.
* CruellaToAnimals: In the epilogue to the second game, Gulp is looked after in a monster sanctuary, implying that Ripto used to mistreat him.
* DumbMuscle: Not as bad as Crush, but still pretty dim.
* HulkSpeak
* SuddenlyVoiced: Very briefly in the fourth game.

!!The Sorceress
[[quoteright:250:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_sorceress_8799.png]]
The main villain of ''Year Of The Dragon''. A vain, [[SelfishEvil selfish]], tyrant who ruled the Forgotten Realms. She kidnapped all the baby dragons during the Year Of The Dragons so [[MoralEventHorizon she could extract their wings for use in a spell that would make her immortal]], forcing Spyro to come rescue them. Bianca was formerly her [[TheDragon Dragon]] but once she discovered the Sorceress' true intentions, she performed a HeelFaceTurn and helped Spyro defeat her.

->'''Voiced by:''' Flo de Rie.
----
* AcidPool: How she meets her end.
* BigBad: Of ''Year Of The Dragon''.
* BadBoss: Turns a lot of her minions into more powerful monsters against their will, and chews out Bianca on a frequent basis.
* TheCameo: Hunter is frightened by a Sorceress balloon at the start of ''Enter the Dragonfly.''
* DisneyVillainDeath: Falls to her death when the flying saucer she was fighting Spyro in was disabled. Special mention for falling into ''acid''.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: The Dragons lived in her kingdom until she got ticked off and banished them after a disagreement with one of the Elders. Only afterwards did she discover they were the source of her powers.
* EvilMentor: To Bianca.
* EvilSorcerer: It's in her name.
* [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep Everyone Calls Her The Sorceress]]
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Ruled the Forgotten Realms and is as evil as they come.
* ImmortalitySeeker: She wants to use the baby dragons' wings for a spell to live forever.
* ItsAllAboutMe: The only person she cares about is herself.
* KilledOffForReal: Unlike the other Insomniac era villains, she was a one-shot villain and stayed dead after ''Year of the Dragon'', though balloon float of her shows up in Enter The Dragonfly.
* KnightOfCerebus: Unlike Gnasty Gnorc and Ripto, her evil is played completely straight and she lacks any sort of comedy.
* MeaningfulName: She's...well, a sorceress.
* NotQuiteDead: Is thrown into molten lava by Spyro and seemingly killed, but she claws her way out and fights Spyro one last time before being KilledOffForReal by falling into an AcidPool.
* PoweredByAForsakenChild: Her spell literally required the wings of 300 baby dragons to work.
** Both of her wands were powered by a dragon egg.
* SorcerousOverlord: Rules over the Forgotten Realms with her powerful magic.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: She could give [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfSpyro Malefor]] a run for his money.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Subverted. She initially appears to wish to restore her homeland to the way it was, but it turns out she plans to murder three hundred baby dragons and steal their wings to make herself immortal, much to Bianca's disgust.
* WouldHurtAChild: Wanted to kill all '' 300'' of the baby dragons she'd captured for their wings so she could cast a spell and become immortal. She mentions that she didn't ''need'' to kill them in the process of removing their wings, but doing so would stop them from squirming as she did it...

----
[[index]]
* {{Badbutt}}: In the first game, he was rather cocky and overconfident, thinking that fighting Gnasty Gnorc would only require making his butt extra crispy. He mellows out a little bit in the second game, and becomes quite the {{Badass}}.
** BadassAdorable: In the second game onwards.
[[Characters/SpyroTheDragonHeroes Heroes]]
* BagOfSpilling: Averted. All of the powerups he purchases from Moneybags in the second game are retained in the third (with the exception of the [[GameBreaker superflame powerup]]).
[[Characters/SpyroTheDragonVillains Villains]]
* BerserkButton: Threaten to auction a dragon egg after he went through hell to get most of them? You're only asking for trouble, [[MoneyDearBoy Money]][[{{Jerkass}} bags.]]
** Also, don't hurt his friends. If you do... well, how do you like your butt? [[KillItWithFire Burnt, well done, or cremated?]]
* BreakingTheFourthWall: He makes quite a few nods to it, most notably in the first game.
* BreathWeapon: Well, he ''is'' a dragon.
* CelibateHero
-->'''Spyro''': It's a sad sight, Sparx. Another noble warrior falls victim to the plague of love.
** Though he does show something of an attraction to Elora.
* DeadpanSnarker
* PlayingWithFire: Of course.

->'''Voiced by:''' André Sogliuzzo.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: He has a few levels in the third game dedicated all to himself.
* [[FairyCompanion Dragonfly Companion]]
* PlatformingPocketPal

->'''Voiced by:''' Michael Gough.
----
* BigBad: Of the first game.

* CloudCuckoolander

* FaunsAndSatyrs: She's a faun, you dork!
* RedheadInGreen

* NoNameGiven: See EverybodyCallsHimBarkeep.
* TheProfessor: Of course.

* CashGate

->'''Voiced by:''' Pamela Hayden.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: Something of a foreshadowing she wasn't villain material.
* TheComicallySerious

->'''Voiced by:''' Edita Brychta.
----
* ActionGirl: A very competent fighter.
* BadassAdorable: She's a kangaroo, for crying out loud.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's a friendly and pleasant lass, but won't hesitate to trample any Rhynoc she encounters.
* TheChick
* DoubleJump
* GoombaStomp: One of her main forms of attack.
* KangaroosRepresentAustralia

* AnOfficerAndAGentleman: Sometimes.
* TheLancer

----
* BadassAdorable: A giant yeti.
* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti
* TheBigGuy[=/=]GeniusBruiser
* CarryABigStick: His WeaponOfChoice.

->'''Voiced by:''' Richard Tatum.
----
* BadassNormal: Relies more heavily on technological weaponry compared to Spyro and his friends, and has no special abilities beyond that.
* BloodKnight
* EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys
* MotorMouth
* ThrowDownTheBomblet

->'''Voiced by:''' Gregg Berger.
----
* ArchEnemy: Not initially, but eventually ascended to being Spyro's most prominent nemesis pre-reboot.
* CardCarryingVillain
* LaughablyEvil

->'''Voiced by:''' Gregg Berger
----
* TheBrute
* BoisterousBruiser: Played fairly straight.
* SuddenlyVoiced

!!Gulp
[[quoteright:238:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crush_1012.gif]]
One of Ripto's minions next to Crush. He has two giant laser cannons strapped to his back. He is defeated while battling Spyro, but returns in the sequel.

->'''Voiced by:''' Gregg Berger.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Which reveals his HiddenDepths, namely that he would love to be a dancer who can cook.
* TheBrute
* BoisterousBruiser
* HulkSpeak

->'''Voiced by:''' Flo de Rie.
----
* AcidPool: How she meets her end.
* EvilMentor: To Bianca.
* MeaningfulName: She's...well, a sorceress.

!!Ember
A pink dragoness introduced in ''A Hero's Tail'', who is shown to have a crush on Spyro.

->'''Voiced by:''' TaraStrong.
----
* {{Expy}}: Of [[SonicTheHedgehog Amy Rose]].
* {{Fangirl}}
* InnocentBlueEyes
* InterspeciesRomance: Eventually falls in love with an armadillo in ''Shadow Legacy''.
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: In addition to being [[PinkGirlBlueBoy pink]], she has a necklace and a heart-shaped tail.

!!Flame
A supporting character in ''A Hero's Tail''.

->'''Voiced by:''' TaraStrong.
----
* HeyItsThatVoice: Voiced by TaraStrong, and sounds remarkably similar to [[WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents Timmy Turner]].
* PaletteSwap: Flame is basically Spyro with red scales instead of purple ones. There are some subtle differences (a wider snout on Flame, for example) but they're still really similar. Without going into the Model Viewer, it's hard to notice.

!!Red
[[quoteright:320:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/480px-red_3086.jpg]]
The villain of ''A Hero's Tail''. Formerly a dragon elder, his lust for power led him to be banished. He returns to the Dragon Realms years later, using Dark Gems to fuel his power.

->'''Voiced by:''' Jess Harnell.
----
* BigBad: Of ''A Hero's Tail''.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Courtesy of the Sorcerer. He was under the Sorcerer's control during the events of ''A Hero's Tail'' as well.
* FallenHero
* HeelFaceTurn: Becomes an ally in ''Shadow Legacy''.
* MeaningfulName: Guess what color he is.
* OneWingedAngel: Transforms into a robot for the final boss fight in ''A Hero's Tail''. The transformation is undone after the battle.
* YouHaveFailedMe: He's not afraid to kill his minions when they screw up. He's also shown to kill minions who give him bad news.

!!The Sorcerer
[[quoteright:308:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spyro_1_2390.png]]
The villain of ''Shadow Legacy''. A dark Wizard Dragon that seeks to plunge the Dragon Realm and other homeworlds into the Shadow Realm so that he may drain their magic.
----
* BiggerBad: Was the one who manipulated Red to evil which led to the events of ''A Hero's Tail''.
* TheCorrupter: Of Red.
