* AdaptationPersonalityChange: Sonic is notably much more aloof and passive in this series. When he's not fighting Eggman, he usually spends his time sleeping where ever he can rather than hanging out with his friends or seeking out high stakes adventure.
* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: Compared to the games or other Sonic media, here Sonic spends significantly less time with his friends. In some episodes, he even deliberately refuses to join his friends on their trips until Eggman gets involved.
* AllLovingHero: Much like his game incarnation, this incarnation of Sonic easily makes friends out of his former enemies and even forgives them too.
* AloofAlly: Downplayed case. Sonic is friendly and cheerful, but not very expressive and tends to prefer being by himself until a threat appears. He also ignores the authorities' requests for his aid in fighting Eggman, as he prefers doing things on his own terms. * AlwaysSomeoneBetter: A lot of characters convey an animosity towards him because of his bravado and popularity, such as Eggman, Knuckles and the Chaotix in particular have recurring jealous rivalries towards him. Could be considered this to Sam Speed but in a lesser extent.
* AnOddPlaceToSleep: Has a tendency to sleep on rooftops, balcony guards, the wing of the X-Tornado and even on top of a castle battlement in one instance.
* AntiVillain: His form, Dark Sonic, due to the fact that he's not evil, just more aggressive and pragmatic than Sonic. He also only occurs when Sonic's friends get hurt.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's overall a pretty easy-going, and sympathetic guy, but hurting his friends is what sets him off. Best seen when he becomes [[FanNickname "Dark Super Sonic"]] in response to seeing Chris and Cosmo get hurt.

* BrilliantButLazy: Whenever he's not roaming the planet or being with his friends, he tends to laze around a lot, and has a few times beaten Eggman's robots at the last minute. This gets deconstructed in the Sonic Battle saga, in which people are inspired by him and start imitating his lazy and carefree lifestyle (minus the ''brilliant'' part) to their detriment.
* CatchPhrase: In the Japanese version, he tends to exclaim "Oh shoot!" whenever something goes wrong.
* CharacterExaggeration: The show takes Sonic's SuperDrowningSkills and turns them into full-blown hydrophobia, to the extent that landing in a simple ''puddle'' of water in "Cracking Knuckles" triggers a [[FreakOut panic attack]] until he realizes it's [[StopDrowningAndStandUp barely half a foot deep]].
* ChickMagnet: He's shown to have many fans, including {{fangirl}}s.
* CoolBigBro: To Tails, Cream, and the human kids in the cast, particularly Chris and Helen.
* DeadpanSnarker: Like in other continuities, he makes a lot of jokes at everyone, especially Knuckles.

* TheEmpath: Has an unexplained ability to "hear" Amy and Chris when they are thinking of him.

* OneManArmy: He takes armies of heavily armed robots, giant monsters and galactic overlords out on a regular day-basis.
* OnlySaneMan: In the episodes "Sunblock Solution" and "Eggman for President," he's initially the ''only'' person who realizes that Eggman's Egg Moon/Sunshine Ball deal is a scam and a lie because if the Egg Moon had truly stopped rotating, then it would stand still and ''not'' keep blocking the sun; even geniuses like Tails and Chuck [[IdiotBall forgot that detail]]. When Knuckles demands to know why he didn't tell them that ''before'' he went about smashing the towers, Sonic retorts that [[ThoughtTheyKnewAlready it should've been obvious]].
* OutOfFocus: Even in Season 1 with Chris [[SpotlightStealingSquad taking so much attention]] Sonic still got to be the star of all of the episodes, especially in season 2. But by the time Season 3 comes about and introduces the relationship between Tails and Cosmo, he gets pushed to the wayside a bit further.

* SuperSpeed: ''Sonic X'' pins his top speed before bursting past the sound barrier at 600 mph, which is essentially the far limit of subsonic speeds. Later on, he races against a supersonic car and wins ''handily'' to the point a high-speed camera had to be used to show him darting past the line, coming back to make faces, and then shoot back over it again before the car catches up. Furthermore, he's shown fast enough to outrace ''lightning''.

** Despite Chris' friendship with Sonic being the driving force for the former's character, the two don't spend much of their freetime together, with Chris usually hanging out with Tails, Amy, and Cream instead.

Completely focused on his duty to guard the Master Emerald, Knuckles has been wandering to find it, and keeps to himself. He is short-tempered and easy on forgiveness, but he makes up for it with his courage and fists.

* AdaptationalJerkass: The 4kids dub of episode 74 has him outright say that they should remove the device in Cosmo's head knowing full well that it would impair Cosmo's vision and hearing. In the sub version, he was against it and insisted that there had to be a way to remove it without rendering Cosmo both deaf and blind.
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: PlayedWith. In the ''Adventure'' games and ''Heroes'' Knuckles wasn't as gruff and hot-headed as he is presented in ''X'', but he is presented as one in ''Sonic Battle'' and later games gave him this characterization later on.
* AesopAmnesia: No matter how many times he's tricked by Eggman's BlatantLies or fake [[HeelFaceTurn Heel-Face Turns]], Knuckles repeatedly fails to learn and always ends up falling for the same tricks and lies again and again. It's even lampshaded in the episode "An Enemy in Need," where Amy outright asks him just how many times he's going to fall for it before it finally sinks it for him that Eggman will ''never'' change his ways.
* AloofAlly: He prefers to do things alone, and tends to get pretty annoyed with Sonic's reckless ways and the group worshiping him. It was only in later episodes, that he grew more attached to the group.

* BadassNormal: He's one of the few who is a powerful fighter without using inhabitant rings. He's able to fight on equal terms with Sonic, and is one of the most determined fighters yet.

* CannotTellAJoke: The reason why everyone likes to tease him. He'll always snap when a joke is aimed at him.
* CharacterDevelopment: When first introduced, Knuckles was a temperamental lone Wolf who despised Sonic for accidently sending them to earth. But he calms down and becomes more sociable during the process of the show, despite still being short tempered and abrasive. And though he still confronts Sonic when he acts before he thinks, Knuckles develops a genuine friendship with him in season 2 onwards.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: The reason why he always forgives Dr. Eggman. Knuckles's moral code is to give everyone a second chance at any time, even if it's Eggman who tricked him once too many times.

A RunningGag is made out of the others goading or mocking Knuckles into following things through. This is never called out, even occasions he turned out to be ''right''. However, sometimes, he's actually the voice of reason, like in Episode 10, where he explained the consequences, of playing baseball with Eggman, because of a chaos emerald. The group, however, refused to listen, and did their usual thing, which is mocking him, until he gives in. As it turned out, he was right in the end, and it would save them a lot less trouble, if they just took the emerald from Eggman, and put it to a safe place. This is never called out and the team and even Knuckles act like the effort and fun was worth it.
** Happens again in Cosmic Crisis, where his [[WithFriendsLikeThese supposed friends]] steal the Master Emerald (without even apologizing or telling him about it) and then get mad at him after he gets (rightfully) angry at them.

It's also implied that he envies Sonic for his freedom and [[MagneticHero popularity]]. As time passes by, though, while he doesn't outright admit it, he has developed a firm bond with Sonic.

And even after that his parents do try to spend time with him when they can and feel guilty when they can't.

Unlike many incarnations of Eggman's minions, these two don't usually confront Sonic and Co. directly, but rather personally assist Dr. Eggman, usually in whatever base / flying fortress he's currently operating.

Whenever they're not busy helping him, they're usually seen engaging in peaceful activities, such as daintily drinking tea. When they temporarily run away from Eggman, they live at Chris's house and prove to be very helpful and friendly.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Unlike Dr. Eggman's lackies in previous animated shows, who were typically a BumblingHenchmenDuo, Decoe and Bocoe are generally competent and able to follow out their creator's orders, and show more insight than the Doctor quite a few times. For instance, they are put in charge of defending Eggman's island base when G.U.N. decides to attack it, and put up quite a fight against the navy and the air force. Like Mr. Stuart, Intelligente is sent to Chris' school with an ulterior motive (to brainwash the children into worshipping Eggman), and like Mr. Stuart, he bonds with the kids and initially refuses to carry out his mission. However, when push comes to shove, Intelligente gives in to Dr. Eggman, betrays the kids, and reverts to his initial programming, whereas Mr. Stuart refuses to give up on Chris and co. no matter what.

It becomes very evident that this is so whenever the prospect of Sonic and friends going home comes up, as he'll act rather irrational and selfish. Him running off with Sonic near the end of Season 2, despite threat of both worlds freezing in time forever, is the biggest highlight of this. This lessons in the final season, where he grows more emotionally stable and leans less on his friends as a result.

** In Episode 25 he helps Knuckles with his plan to form a truce with Eggman, a plan that involves Chris stealing all of the Chaos Emeralds the heroes had previously gathered and giving them to the doctor. As one would expect, the doctor betrays them, now has all but one of the seven emeralds, and uses them to power a robot that nearly kills Sonic.
** In Episode 32, near the end of the ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' adaptation after Chaos already has six of the emeralds, Chris (who had found the seventh emerald) comes running up to Sonic and Knuckles holding said gem up high in his hand. Predictablly, Chaos attacks him and causes him to drop it, which allows the monster to transform into its perfect form.

* TheFriendsWhoNeverHang: Despite Chris' friendship with Sonic being the driving force for the former's character, the two don't spend much of their freetime togehter, with Chris usually hanging out with Tails, Amy, and Cream instead.

* AbsurdlyYouthfulFather: Chuck, Nelson's father is 55 in the first part of the series while Nelson himself is 43. This means that Chuck had Nelson at only ''12 years old''.
