* KillTheOnesYouLove: She ends up killing her husband, son, father-in-law and mother-in-law because she wanted to try and turn them into Shiki like her. Unfortunately, none of them rise up and Nao starts breaking down when she realizes she killed the only people who ever loved her.

A kind 18-year old boy and Natsuno's best friend.

* AntiVillain: After he returns as a Shiki, Tohru really hates being an undead monster and still acts like the same gentle guy he was as a human. He only kills humans because Tatsumi is forcing him to by threatening to kill his family if he doesn't do it and his HorrorHunger is too much for him to control it.
* BackFromTheDead: Megumi kills him early in the series and he also becomes a Shiki.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: Light brown hair and eyes.
* DirtyCoward: Tohru kills people because he's terrified of dying himself. He feels bad about it, but not enough to simply refuse to kill.
* DueToTheDead: After [[spoiler:he kills Natsuno]], Tohru starts to leave a single flower outside of Natsuno's window every night to commemorate [[spoiler:Natsuno]]'s death.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Natsuno. With a bit of HoYay.
* KillTheCutie: A sweet and honest young man who generally brought out the better in just about everyone he knew and is one of the first characters to get killed. This also borders on BreakTheCutie because of what he’s forced to go through next.

* LikesOlderWomen: If his attraction to Ritsuko is anything to go by.

* OnlyFriend: He's the only villager Natsuno is close to and he shows to openly care about.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: He eventually rises as a Shiki after being bitten and killed by Megumi.
* PunchClockVillain: Doesn't like being a Shiki, and mostly sucks blood just to stay alive and to keep Tatsumi from coming for his family.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:After Natsuno comes back as a Jinrou, Tohru gives him valuable information on what the Shiki plan to do with the village.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: He is emotional and supportive red to Natsuno’s blue.
* SecretlySelfish: Gets called out on this by both Megumi and Ritsuko after he becomes a Shiki. He doesn't want to admit how inhumane his actions are and try to justify them by saying he has no choice. The fact that Ritsuko refuses to kill humans herself leads him to having a VillainousBreakdown.
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:With Ritsuko.]]
* TragicVillain: He maintains his gentle personality after he becomes a Shiki, but gets also the all consuming bloodlust. He hates what he does, but can't help himself and is torn by guilt.
