* DarkandTroubledPast: [[spoiler: Two years after his birth, his mother fell in a coma. At the age of five, he obtained the title of the Sword Saint after his grandmother Theresia van Astrea passed away during her fierce battle with the Hakugei. The reason for her death was the sudden loss of her Divine Protection of the Sword Saint which mysteriously disappeared midway through the battle, transferring to young Reinhard. His grandfather, Wilhelm van Astrea, blamed Reinhard for her death, causing their relationship to plummet, leaving only his father who still cared about him. Sadly, his relationship with his father gravely deteriorated as well. After he gained the aforementioned blessing, his father became an alcoholic, and gradually starting to blame him for Theresia's death as well; it didn't take long for Reinhard to be despised by his closest family members. As the strongest individual in the Royal Kingdom of Lugnica, he was forced to join the Royal Guard at the age of fourteen, becoming the strongest weapon in the Kingdom's possession]].

* StoryBreakerPower: The only reason Reinhard doesn't eliminate every obstacle in the story instantly is that he is either distracted or in another place. In fact, this is something commented upon by several characters, who note he has the power to resolve any crises he encounters like a true hero, regardless of the apparently-impossible odds, but he himself is always absent whenever such a situation is occurring for various reasons, either due to the criss occurring in another location, or being too low-key for him to catch wind of it. Accordingly, despite being a 'hero' he is unable to save those whose lives are lost in the time it takes him to arrive, and he himself is deeply aware of this limitation despite his overwhelming strength. Furthermore, as a technical rival to Subaru and Emilia because of him being Felt's knight, him resolving their crises situations for them reflects badly on their capabilities. Accordingly, Subaru often has to find a solution to his problems himself, and Reinhard's immense skills are usually showcased in a BadFuture after Subaru died in that timeline.

* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Reinhard's strength is enough to shatter the ground with a kick and grapple with foes three times his size with ease. At one point in Arc 5, Regulus Corneas thinks he's gotten rid of him for good after he used his authority to throw him far into the sky. [[spoiler:Reinhard returns after Subaru has weakened Regulus' authority to have a time limitation now, revealing that he got back down to earth by ''jumping off the moon'']].

* {{Foil}}: To Subaru. Reinhard is an example of the overpowered main character archetype that plagues stories of this genre and was written to contrast Subaru's lack of protagonist abilities and potential. Both have extremely overpowered abilities, but Reinhard's allows him to solve every problem by himself, while Subaru has to consistently borrow the powers of his friends to get things done. Likewise, both have problems with their families, but Subaru manages to resolve them, while Reinhard's problems continue to get worse.

Both have extremely overpowered abilities, but Reinhard's allows him to solve every problem by himself, while Subaru has to consistently borrow the powers of his friends to get things done. However, the contrasting ''nature'' of their abilities means that whilst Reinhard can only every resolve crises situations ''after'' the threat has appeared and caused an immense loss of life, Subaru can preemptively "save" those who are endangered and prevent their demise, something which Reinhard clearly wishes he were capable of. Likewise, both have problems with their families, but Subaru manages to resolve them, while Reinhard's problems continue to get worse.

When Subaru lures a snake mabeast to ambush the Patrol Todd and Jamal were leading towards what they thought was the hidden Shudrach village, Todd remains focused on attempting to kill Subaru even as the patrol to being attached by the dangerous monster, having identified that he's caused the attack somehow and had outwitted him, thus elevating Subaru to the level of 'threat' in Todd's eyes and making him utterly focused on ensuring his demise. Compounding the statement is the fact he blew up a bar of civilians just to catch Subaru in the blast, showcasing how [[TheUnfettered he doesn't care for collateral in favour of what benefits himself]]]]. A side-story in Vol 27 reveals that the Volacian patrol actually managed to kill the snake mabeast without any casualties, but Todd, under the belief that Subaru was a Shudrachian spy and was leading them into an ambush, discreetly poisoned the patrol's water supply with the snake's venom and then mercilessly killed them all after sending Jamal away on an errand, aware he could never convince then it's be too dangerous to pursue Subaru and that they'd report him for desertion otherwise, [[ColdEquation thus killing them all was simply the best choice for him]]. [[spoiler: The ultimate sign of his LackOfEmpathy comes when Jamal pulls a HeroicSacrifice to allow Todd to flee Guural with the wounded Arakiya. Todd's POV shows that he cannot even remember which side of his face Jamal wears his EyepatchOfPower on properly, showing how little he bothered to remember his 'closest' ally's appearance despite their apparent bond]]. Subaru, who
has faced the insanity of the Sin Archbishops first-hand, notes that there's something deeply ''wrong'' with Todd, and is notably intimidated by him despite his comparative lack of power against the super-powered fighters of the world.
* WhyDontYaJustShootHim: Defied. If Todd decides somebody has to die, he'll kill them instantly before they can even react. This trait of his makes him an excellent soldier and highly-dangerous opponent,[[spoiler: but unfortunately, given he decides that [[SaveScumming Subaru]] needs to be on his hitlist, this backfires on him, as his attempts to kill Subaru only end up forcing him back in time with forewarning of Todd's future actions, which in turn, further convinces Todd of the necessity of Subaru having to die as he keeps evading and outwitting him from his perspective.]]

Todd's NumberTwo and general sidekick, his fighting skills and fearsome nature compliment Todd's manipulations and charistmatic personalityA giant, flying, white, whale-like mabeast that's terrorized the world for over 400 years. Anyone it hits with its white fog is not only killed but erased from the memories of everyone else, along with any physical evidence of their existence--only Subaru remembers them. Since its appearances are random, hunting it down is even more difficult than it would otherwise be.

* DualWielding: Jamal's preferred weapons are a pair of sword that he's quite adept with, using either for offence or defence as needed with surprising skill for somebody who looks and acts like a back-alley thug most of the time.
* EyepatchOfPower: Jamal wears an eyepatch over his right eye, and is quite adept at fighting in spite of it.
* EyeScream: Todd comments that Jamal lost his right eye in some manner that came about from disregarding Todd's more cautious advice, which is why he tends to defer to Todd's more pragmatic viewpoint in arguments, given the sore reminder it represents.
* ItsPersonal: He quickly takes offence against Subaru and his group when they arrive in the Vollacian Camp, given [[spoiler: Rem]] beat two of his men badly enough that it would limit his effectiveness in having his platoon carry out his orders. Subaru's first introduction to his is him forcing his boot into Subaru's mouth when he's BoundAndGagged, just to torment him and vent his ire with Subaru's travelling companions.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Initially, he looks and acts in a similar capacity to [[GoldfishPoopGang Ton, Chin and Kan]] during Subaru's first day in the capital, being a recurring enemy that antagonises Subaru for his own personal reasons and generally being a problematic obstacle that Subaru has to negotiate his way around rather than fight, but once they met again in Guaral, Jamal demonstrates that he's both vastly more stronger and skilled than his appearance suggests, easily forcing Medium back and being powerful enough that [[spoiler: rem]] expresses worry about having to fight him.

** Of a sort. Subaru comes up with the idea of

** The White Whale can do a version of this, too, causing many people to go temporarily insane and collapse in agony.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Taking down the White Whale is seen like this, in-universe. Not just because it's a giant, flying, magical whale
with surprising skill instant-death, area-of-effect ranged attacks, but because its appearances are always random and unpredictable, meaning that actively hunting for somebody who looks it is extremely difficult. But the chance to take it down and acts like a back-alley thug most get revenge for all of the time.
* EyepatchOfPower: Jamal wears an eyepatch over his right eye,
suffering, terror, and is quite adept at fighting in spite of it.

world for 400 years is too tempting for many to pass up.
* ItsPersonal: He quickly takes offence against Subaru and his group when they arrive TheDreaded: The White Whale is probably the second-most feared entity in the Vollacian Camp, given [[spoiler: Rem]] beat two of his men badly enough that it would limit his effectiveness in having his platoon carry out his orders. Subaru's first introduction to his is him forcing his boot into Subaru's mouth when he's BoundAndGagged, just to torment him world after Satella, and vent his ire with Subaru's travelling companions.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Initially, he looks and acts in a similar capacity to [[GoldfishPoopGang Ton, Chin and Kan]] during Subaru's first day in the capital, being a recurring enemy that antagonises Subaru
for his own personal reasons and generally being a problematic obstacle that Subaru has to negotiate his way around rather than fight, but once they met again in Guaral, Jamal good reason. The anime demonstrates just why this is in excellent detail: you don't even remember its victims, nor do any records. The only way for anyone to know that he's both vastly more stronger and skilled than his appearance suggests, easily forcing Medium back and people have fallen victim to the White Whale is for there to be some kind of irrefutable organizational structure that necessitates the existence of people at a given point in time, but, inexplicably, there is no one filling those positions/records. This leads to situations in which a convoy of traders are picked off one by one, with none of them even realizing they're under attack because they instantly forget the ones whom are killed ever existed. The infamous "Who's Rem?" meme hammers this home: Ram cannot even recall ever having a twin sister (or any kind of sister), despite the two being powerful enough almost inseparable for their whole lives. And since all physical traces of Rem's existence were erased, no one even believes Subaru when he insists that Rem did exist. The implications are pretty heavy--how many parents are going about their daily lives, completely unaware that they once had a beloved child that they spent decades raising, with all physical traces of their existence being erased as well? A husband of 50 years might retroactively come to believe that he had never been married at all, and nothing could ever indicate otherwise. In fact, the only reason why ''any'' of the White Whale's victims are remembered is that it sometimes decides to kill people without using its signature fog/mist attack.
* {{Expy}}: Quite possibly one of Sin from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX''. A giant, flying, whale-like monster of overwhelming power that's been terrorizing the world with impunity for hundreds of years, who appears at random around the world? Yup.
* FromBadToWorse: [[spoiler:Just when it seems like they have the White Whale on the ropes, it spawns two clones of itself.]]
* MonsterWhale: This monster is basically the fantasy world version of Literature/MobyDick. If a giant flying whale that hunts people isn't terrifying enough, it also possesses a mystical fog that's capable of {{Ret Gone}}ing anyone it touches and erasing all trace of them from history.
* RasputinianDeath: The White Whale takes an absurd amount of punishment to kill. Even
[[spoiler: rem]] expresses worry about having dropping Flugel's tree onto it]] isn't enough to fight him. kill it, forcing [[spoiler:Wilhelm]] to finish it off.
* RetGone: What the White Whale's fog/mist attack inflicts. It erases both all memories of the victim and all physical traces or records of that person's existence. Subaru is the only one who remembers, most likely solely because of a side-effect of his Return By Death ability, which lets him remember everything even past death itself.

The Sizeable Hare is actually a swarm of hares with an insatiable, unending hunger. They have an inherent population limit that they can't exceed (which is still a very high number), but they will quickly replenish back to that maximum number
in seconds if all of them aren't killed at once. Also, their bites are supernaturally strong: Subaru puts his hand near one and the city of Guaralentire hand is almost instantly chomped off.

* BareYourMidriff: She wears TheDreaded: The White Whale, while powerful and existentially terrifying, is still vulnerable to sufficiently-massed firepower and magical attacks, preventing it from operating too close to cities or armies. The Great Rabbit is mindless and drawn by overt concentrations of mana, and can also be killed by sufficient concentrations of disciplined firepower if it gets too close to an army or city. Comparatively, Black Serpent is unpredictable and has no known means to attract its attention towards any given target. Even if it is killed, the curses it would leave on the area upon being defeated makes fighting it seem very costly, no matter how perfectly executed.
* TheGhost: While it's influence is great and the cast has fought its ''venom'' as its own dreaded boss monster prior, The Black Serpent itself has not properly appeared. This is likely because of the sheer difficulty to track it down in the first place, and hasn't happened upon the characters itself yet. Narratively, this works because the monster is simply too powerful to ignore and thus would put
a bikini-like top halt on any current plot arc by simply having its location known.

that reveals her midriff.

!!Three Great Mabeasts

[[folder:White Whale]]
!!White Whale

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hakugei_anime.png]]

A giant, flying, white, whale-like mabeast that's terrorized the world for over 400 years. Anyone it hits with its white fog is not only killed but erased from the memories of everyone else, along with any physical evidence of their existence--only Subaru remembers them. Since its appearances are random, hunting it down is even more difficult than it would otherwise be.
----
* AirWhale: A literal flying MonsterWhale that has menaced the world for centuries.
* BrownNote:
** Of a sort. Subaru comes up with the idea of using the side effect of [[spoiler:saying that he can Return By Death to kill or cripple the White Whale after he manages to get on top of its horn. It succeeds in bringing the beast down to the ground, where the real trap can be sprung.]]
** The White Whale can do a version of this, too, causing many people to go temporarily insane and collapse in agony.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Taking down the White Whale is seen like this, in-universe. Not just because it's a giant, flying, magical whale with instant-death, area-of-effect ranged attacks, but because its appearances are always random and unpredictable, meaning that actively hunting for it is extremely difficult. But the chance to take it down and get revenge for all of the suffering, terror, and horror it's inflicted on the world for 400 years is too tempting for many to pass up.
* TheDreaded: The White Whale is probably the second-most feared entity in the world after Satella, and for good reason. The anime demonstrates just why this is in excellent detail: you don't even remember its victims, nor do any records. The only way for anyone to know that people have fallen victim to the White Whale is for there to be some kind of irrefutable organizational structure that necessitates the existence of people at a given point in time, but, inexplicably, there is no one filling those positions/records. This leads to situations in which a convoy of traders are picked off one by one, with none of them even realizing they're under attack because they instantly forget the ones whom are killed ever existed. The infamous "Who's Rem?" meme hammers this home: Ram cannot even recall ever having a twin sister (or any kind of sister), despite the two being almost inseparable for their whole lives.
Even [[spoiler: dropping Flugel's tree onto it]] isn't enough to kill it, forcing [[spoiler:Wilhelm]] to finish it off.

[[folder:Great Rabbit]]
!!Great Rabbit

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oosugai.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:A singular Great Rabbit]]

The Sizeable Hare is actually a swarm of hares with an insatiable, unending hunger. They have an inherent population limit that they can't exceed (which is still a very high number), but they will quickly replenish back to that maximum number in seconds if all of them aren't killed at once. Also, their bites are supernaturally strong: Subaru puts his hand near one and the entire hand is almost instantly chomped off.
----
* DevouredByTheHorde: Inflicts this on its victims. It's a very painful way to die, as Subaru can attest to.
* TheDreaded: The Great Rabbit is treated as a natural disaster even worse than White Whale. While the appearance of the White Whale is a freak occurrence akin to a meteor, the Great Rabbit is more like a never ending hurricane that can be tracked by the sheer amount of devastation it causes by eating everything in sight.
* DudeWheresMyReward: [[spoiler: Emilia's faction reports that they killed the Great Rabbit to the government, but they don't receive credit for the achievement since no witnesses outside their faction were present and no body could be found. They said that they'd consider the claim proven if the Great Rabbit made no appearances for the next decade, but by that point the Royal Selection will be over.]]
* FromASingleCell: If even one of the hares survives, it will continue to multiply back to its maximum population limit extremely quickly, usually by feeding.
* HairRaisingHare: These fluffy bunnies are actually a man-eating monster that will devour every person in sight, or, if no people are nearby, then they'll devour themselves.
* HiveMind: The Great Rabbit is believed to be a single entity split into hundreds.
* HordeOfAlienLocusts: A non-alien version. They descend onto a settlement and devour everyone, leaving nothing behind in terms of bodies.
* KillerRabbit: Don't let its adorable appearance and small size fool you because this little thing is one of the most dangerous mabeasts in the world and the hardest to kill.
* NegativeSpaceWedgie: [[spoiler: How they are ultimately defeated. Beatrice, aided by Subaru and Emilia, uses the ultimate yin-element spell, Al Shamac, creating a wormhole of sorts that sucks the entire swarm into an alternate dimension of blackness.]]
* TheSwarm: They always act as a swarm, overwhelming everything with sheer numbers and incredible multiplication/replication.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Black Serpent]]
!!Black Serpent
The Black Serpent is said to be the hardest of the great three mabeasts to control or deal with.
----
* TheDreaded: The White Whale, while powerful and existentially terrifying, is still vulnerable to sufficiently-massed firepower and magical attacks, preventing it from operating too close to cities or armies.
Narratively, this works because the monster is simply too powerful to ignore and thus would put a halt on any current plot arc by simply having its location known.
* PoisonIsEvil: Its venom alone is so powerful and dangerous that it's able to prey on powerful demons and serve as an immensely tangible threat on its own.
* SerpentOfImmortality: Very literally an immortal snake, though the immortality is more age related than being unable to die.
* WalkingWasteland: It is a giant black snake which sows the lands it travels through with curses, making it a mobile, living natural disaster. On top of that, it inflicts over a hundred diseases upon anyone it touches--such as with its long, prehensile tongue--which kills its victims in mere seconds in horrific fashion. The curses it leaves upon the land as it travels is analogous to radioactive pollution in which it makes an area uninhabitable and dangerous to even approach for a very long time.

* BlowYouAway: While Zarestia once possessed power over the four elements, she now retains only her extremely powerful Wind Magic.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: She ''hates'' alcohol. Just coming into contact with it is enough to put her into shock.
* EtherealWhiteDress: She's the Great Spirit of Murder that is called a {{Shinigami}} by many. She dresses in a mostly white kimono similar to burial clothes to represent her close connection to death.
* EveryoneHasStandards: She's a Spirit of Murder and self-proclaimed {{Shinigami}}, but she won't kill pregnant women regardless of any sin the mother committed.
* ImmortalImmaturity: She can be surprisingly childish despite being one of the oldest beings in her world.
* InSeriesNickname: She asks others to call her "Tia".
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: In the Rem IF novel, she tries joining Subaru and Halibel at the male side of the hot springs, not understanding the reasons why that would be wrong. Luckily, Rem is there to stop her.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: In the Rem IF novel, she accidentally knocks the pregnant Rem into a wall when Rem gets close to her while she's passed out drunk and Zarestia mistakes Rem for the {{Oni}} girl who stole her light ball. When Zarestia comes to her senses, she's horrified at seeing what she did to Rem.
* MysticalWhiteHair: She has the appearance of a young woman with pure white hair, hinting at her supernatural nature as a Great Spirit.
* RedBaron: She took the title of the Most Beautiful Shinigami after people called her "shinigami" when she killed them in the end and how they had once called her "beautiful".

----
* AHeroToHisHometown: Kenichi is something of a local celebrity in the community he lives in, getting along with everyone from high schoolers to the elderly, resulting in his phone having thousands of contacts. This is {{deconstructed|Trope}} on Subaru's end, as he can't live up the (perceived) expectations of being Kenichi's son, leading to him being a {{Hikikomori}} prior to the story.
* HeroicBuild: Kenichi is tall and strongly built for a middle age man, and he's AHeroToHisHometown.

Since its appearances are random, hunting it down is even more difficult than it would otherwise be.Vollachia.

* AirWhale: A literal flying MonsterWhale that has menaced the world for centuries.
* BrownNote:
Even [[spoiler: dropping Flugel's tree onto it]] isn't enough to kill it, forcing [[spoiler:Wilhelm]] to finish it off.

The Black Serpent is said to be the hardest sixth-ranked Divine General of the great three mabeasts to control or deal with. Vollachia Empire.

* TheDreaded: The White Whale, while powerful and existentially terrifying, is still vulnerable to sufficiently-massed firepower and magical attacks, preventing it from operating too close to cities or armies.

** The White Whale can do a version of this, too, causing many people to go temporarily insane and collapse in agony.
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: [[spoiler:She didn't die DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Taking down the White Whale is seen like this, in-universe.
* TheDreaded: The White Whale is probably the second-most feared entity
in the landslide accident, but lost her memories. Garek Thompson, who was a merchant at world after Satella, and for good reason. The anime demonstrates just why this is in excellent detail: you don't even remember its victims, nor do any records. The only way for anyone to know that people have fallen victim to the White Whale is for there to be some kind of irrefutable organizational structure that necessitates the existence of people at a given point in time, found her and took care but, inexplicably, there is no one filling those positions/records. This leads to situations in which a convoy of her. They ended up getting traders are picked off one by one, with none of them even realizing they're under attack because they instantly forget the ones whom are killed ever existed. The infamous "Who's Rem?" meme hammers this home: Ram cannot even recall ever having a twin sister (or any kind of sister), despite the two being almost inseparable for their whole lives.
Yup.

Even [[spoiler: dropping Flugel's tree onto it]] isn't enough to kill it, forcing [[spoiler:Wilhelm]] to finish it off.

Added DiffLines:

* TheDreaded: The White Whale, while powerful and existentially terrifying, is still vulnerable to sufficiently-massed firepower and magical attacks, preventing it from operating too close to cities or armies.

In addition, these new powers blessings don't disappear afterward, allowing him to stack abilities to become almost invincible.invincible. During a trip to Volakia, Julius witnessed him fighting off a small army of {{Half Human Hybrids}} without a scratch despite their unique fighting styles, noting that it was due to the combination of the 'first-sight blessing', allowing him to instinctively understand how to react to an attack he is seeing for the first time, and the 'twice-seen' blessing, which enables him to react with greater speed to an attack he has witnessed before, making it functionally ''impossible'' to hit him with a new or repeated attack, especially with his insane physical abilities.

* BornWinner: Comes from a line of master swordsmen and was born with a blessing that lets him wish for more blessings which he can permanently keep with no limits on the number, whereas normal people are extremely lucky to be born with one.one, not to mention his inherited blessing as the sword saint. However, the series also somewhat deconstructs this aspect of him. Reinhard has multiple abilities and blessings that basically guarantee him victory in any conflict no matter the odds, but he is [[DeusExitMachina often absent or unable to intervene]] in the deadly situations that Subaru encounters, and whenever he ''does'' show up, it's usually after somebody has already perished [[note]] usually Subaru [[/note]] and he cannot restore the dead back to life, only being able to obliterate the threat that caused so much death to prevent further harm. Subaru's [[SaveScumming unique power]] allows him to pre-empt deadly situations and make it out with minimal loss of life, but Reinhard can only ever appear ''after'' a large crisis has happened that requires the power of an almighty hero to be stopped. This is noted by several characters in the ArcWords that appear around Reinhard, that he has the power to protect everybody, but cannot actually ''save'' anyone, especially those he is close to, and his sheer overwhelming power actually alienates him from many, including his own family due to the circumstances in which he inherited the blessing of the Sword Saint.

* TheGhost: While it's influence is great and the cast has fought it's ''venom'' as its own dreaded boss monster prior, The Black Serpent itself has not properly appeared. This is likely because of the sheer difficulty to track it down in the first place, and hasn't happened upon the characters itself yet. Narratively, this works because the monster is simply too powerful to ignore and thus would put a halt on any current plot arc by simply having its location known.
* PoisonIsEvil: It's venom alone is so powerful and dangerous that it's able to prey on powerful demons and serve as an immensely tangible threat on its own.

* AdaptationalModesty: A mostly donwplayed example. In the light novel, Meili's outfit is slighly tighter than in the anime, which makes her torso's physique more noticeable, and her chest is no exception. Also, her dress is slightly longer in the anime, as it reaches her knees, while in the light novel it only reaches halfway through her thighs, thus leaving her legs more exposed.
