* KickTheSonOfABitch: While she is stealing energy from the Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, she ends up indirectly sabotaging Lightning Blitz, since his Pokémon end up not being healed from their battles, and limiting his options on which ones to use for the remainder of the Horizon Cup. She later confronts him directly after he wins his semi-final match and drains his remaining three Pokémon of their energy too. She only does this to ensure she has enough Infinity Energy to free Centirek, but it is still hard to feel bad for Lightning due to him being a {{jerkass}} and a constant annoyance to Flash and his friends, plus he has been [[GreenEyedMonster jealous of Flash's new fame]] throughout all of ''Rival and Darkness''.

* TheUnfought: Flash and his friends decided to head to Dragonia City to face him, since Flash heard from Cadance how he was the toughest Gym Leader in Equestria. Unfortunately, shortly after they finally arrived, Torch announced his retirement, and Ember became the new Gym Leader. Though Flash is disappointed he missed out on battling Torch he is happy to face Ember as her premier battle.

* OverprotectiveDad: According to Garble, he would have his Druddigon ''eat'' anyone who so much as looks at his daughter Ember too closely.

* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Subverted; Titan demonstrates that there is more to being a king than just using violence. When he and his family come across a dispute between a Kingdra and Dragalge, Titan breaks the two of them up and listens to both sides of the story, before fixing the situation without needing to fight either of them. His trainer, Drayce, has also stated that the two of them have lost plenty of battles together, showing that just being king does not make him unbeatable.

* TheBadGuyWins: Though not an openly evil threat like Team Shadow, he still holds a very toxic view of Pokémon and is Flash Sentry's most antagonistic rival. Thus, any time he wins makes for a huge DownerEnding. The biggest example is definitely [[spoiler:when he wins the Hoofington Battle Tournament, defeating three opponents who tried to gang up on him in a Battle Royale, Twilight in the semi-finals, and then Flash in the finals 6-3. This makes him more cocky than ever believing his views are correct, and leaves Flash in a HeroicBSOD]].

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Subverted; Titan demonstrates that there is more to being a king than just using violence. * WrongGenreSavvy: When she faces Doc in the second round of The Hoof Cup, she foolishly gives herself a handicap by sending out Tank to battle against Steeledge, despite the type disadvantage. Ultimately, Rainbow loses the battle ,and when she is called out on her recklessness she explains that since other competitors won despite having a type disadvantage she thought she could too. What she didn't realize was they all won because they had a strategy to counter the disadvantage they had.

* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: She joins Applejack on her journey to gather badges and enter the Equestria League, but admits she has no idea what her own goal should be.

** She reveals at Camp Everfree she managed to catch a Milcery, a Pokémon only native to the Galar Region, because it randomly appeared next to her one day and allowed itself to be captured.

* ShipTease: He has this with Rainbow throughout "Cloudsdale Sky-Racers". They both form a quick friendship due to having a lot in common like growing up in Cloudsdale and their love for Flying types, end up tying in The Great Cloudsdale Race, and Rainbow noticeably gets [[LuminescentBlush red faced]] when saying goodbye to him.

** This ends up being downplayed when [[spoiler:he loses to Flash in the finals of the Equestria League. Though he is still completely shocked by this, and his first reaction is to muble how this "[[ThisCannotBe wasn't supposed to happen]]" and how he was "supposed" to win and defeat Shining Armor, he is shown by the end of the day to realize that maybe everything Flash had been saying was right afte rall and ends up humbeling asking Grand Hoof for training]].

* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:He constantly insults Flash and his team every single time they meet, calling him a loser and his team weak and worthless. So, after constantly acting like he is so much better than him, it is satisfying when Flash finally defeats him in the Equestria League, knocking him off his high horse and shattering his entire worldview that MightMakesRight. Far bonus points, he has constantly mocked Riptide the most out of all of Flash's Pokémon, only for Riptide to be the one to ultimately seal his defeat in the League by defeating Gorillamp.]]

* CryCute: She bursts into tears and leaps at Hopper hugging him when [[spoiler:Hopper needs to stay in the Dragon Kingdom to become the next king of the dragons, devastated that she is losing her best friend]].

* GoodScarsEvilScars: He is a very nasty Pokémon, and after he attacked Springer and the ten year-old Flash, he receives a scar across his left eye from Shining Armor's Squiron. This scar is also how Flash [[DistinguishingMark recognize him years later]].

* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler:He becomes this for a lot of people when he is revealed to be the founder and leader of Team Shadow. Before he was a respected businessman and entrepreneur, with the professors, Shining Armor, and Flash's group all considering him a friend of their's. Once they learn who he really is though, they lose all respect for him and focus on taking him down. An entire army of trainers across Equestria later answer Flash's call to join him against Sombra.]]

** During his VillainousBreakdown in the Equestria League finals, when Riptide [[TheDeterminator refuses to stay down against Gorillamp]] like he is "supposed to", he starts ''demanding'' that he be declared the winner before Riptide is officially declared unable to battle, insiting that the battle is over and that Riptide can't go on anymore due to "being a weakling", even starting to use threats before [[ShutUpHannibal Flash finally tells him to just shut up]]. [[spoiler:After he and Gorillamp are defeated, he begins whispering to himself how this wasn't "supposed" to go and he was "supposed" to win and beat Shining Armor because he is the "strongest".]]

* VillainousBreakdown: After putting up with Flash so many times, including dealing with [[GreenEyedMonster jealousy over everyone praising him and calling him a hero]], Lightning has one of these when he faces Flash in the finals of the League. He tries to keep calm during this, but as Flash slowly defeats more of his team, his composure slips more and more, as he gets frustrated and it over how the battle isn't ending up being a CurbStompBattle in his favor like he boasted it would. Finally, when Riptide, who he sees as the weakest Pokémon on Flash's team, won't stay down against Gorillamp, he starts loudly ''demanding'' that he be declared the winner. When Flash continues to talk down to him and taunt him, Lightning eventually declares that he is sick of Flash always getting in his way and that he will destroy him once and for all, shocking the entire audience watching. [[spoiler:He burns himself out once Gorillamp is defeated, and can only whisper to himself how he was "supposed" to win in complete shock.]]

* ItsPersonal: Part of his grude against Flash is due to [[spoiler:how he wound up being Hopper's trainer instead of him. Ryu was meant to be Hopper's trainer when he hatched, but due to his egg being stolen that didn't end up happening. Eventually, Ryu challeneges Flash for the right to be Hopper's trainer, only to end up losing to Hopper himself]].

* InstantExpert: Zig-zagged. After evolving into Reptidal he learns the move "Aqua Break", and uses it to great effect against the army of Trevenant attacking him, Flash, and the rest of Flash's Pokémon. The very next chapter though shows that compared to other, more experienced Reptidals, he is just swinging his sword around wildly. But, Terramar helps him practice by having Riptide copy the movements of his own Riptidal, and after a few hours of practicing over a few days Riptide becomes a MasterSwordsman.

* MrExposition: He provide the expository information about how the Great Cloudsdale Race works.
* ShipTease: He has this with Rainbow throughout "Cloudsdale Sky-Racers". They both form a quick friendship due to having a lot in common like growing up in Cloudsdale and their love for Flying types, end up tying in The Great Cloudsdale Race, and Rainbow noticeably gets [[LuminescentBlush red faced]] when saying goodbye to him.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While she was initially hostile to Flash and his friends after misinterpreting them as Hopper's kidnappers, she does ease up when the matter gets clarified and is more open to them than Ryu.

* AdultFear: Their child was kidnapped from them before he even hatched from his egg, leaving them both heartbroken. They waited for months on any news of him or the thieves that stole him. Thankfully, they are eventually reunited with him safe and sound, but it is after he has reached his final evolution, essentially meaning he has grown-up without them.

** After defeating Trixie's Slowking, Astro loses to her Hatterene, due to a combination of Hatterene having a double type-advantage against him due to being part Fairy-Type, and Trixie's Trick Room making Hatterene much faster than him. Though he does manage to [[CurbStompCushion get a few good hits in]] with a lucky Shadow Ball, landing a Crunch to her waist, and throwing her in the air while spinning to try to make her dizzy, Hatterene manages to easily beat him by getting behind him and using her PrehensileHair to restrain him and clam his mouth shut, essentially leaving him BoundAndGagged with no way of fighting back or defending himself. Also, she defeats him with a Draining Kiss attack, which [[LifeDrain healed whatever damage he managed to inflict on her]], restoring her to full health.

* TakeThatKiss: Her Hatterene's [[KissOfDeath Draining Kiss]] can be seen as this, partly because she often [[ForcefulKiss forces it on her opponent]] while she has them restrained.
** She uses it to defeat Astro during their battle, kissing him on his head while she has him BoundAndGagged with her hair and unable to fight back, only able to groan through his clamped mouth as she drains him of energy.
** She manages to successfully steal a kiss from Viper twice during their battle. First when he bites her on her knee-area, she quickly leans down and kisses him before he can pull away. Then later, she uses her hair to grab him and kiss him again, until he manages to free himself with a point-blank Flamethrower to the face.

* FirstKiss: [[spoiler:Sunset Shimmer [[ForcefulKiss steals his first kiss]] at the end of ''Total Eclixie the Heart'' as thanks for helping her. Flash is left with a huge blush afterwards.]]

He then takes it a step furthur when he learns "Pyro Coil" after fully evolving, where he wraps himself around his opponent then bites down on his own tail and breaths down it, causing his body to explode in flames and engulfing the one he is constricting too.

* SnakesAreSinister: He is s fire snake and was initially an antagonist when he first appeared, and continued to be a bit selfish even after Flash caught him. Gets subverted in later after he [[TookALevelInKindness becomes kinder to everyone]] after Flash's behavior rubs off on him.

Then, he temporarily returns to Flash's team to help him win his battle against Lightning Blitz in the Equestria League finals.]]

Grand comments he should have put him in his place long ago to stop him from getting to this point, but was too soft on him. When Grand confronts him during the Equestria League, he tells Lightning he knows he can't change him, no matter how much he might want to, and that he is done torturing himself by constantly reaching out to him just to be rejected, and basically disowns Lightning until he is ready to realize his way of doing things is wrong. [[spoiler:After he loses to Flash in the finals and has his entire worldview shattered, he takes a huge slice of HumblePie and finally realizes what Flash and Grand kept trying to tell have have had merit, and humbly asks Grand to help him train.]]

* TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: He is the only canon Pokémon on Doc's team, with the Author's Notes at the end of his debut chapter even saying he doubted anyone was expecting that.

* HandicappedBadass: [[spoiler:He was exposed to the energy of an Everstone, meaning he will likely remain a Riolu forever.]] Despite this though, he still constantly proves to be one of Flash's best Pokémon, and more than once [[BeyondTheImpossible has learned powerful moves that were thought to be impossible for Riolu to learn until evolving]].
