* SlouchOfVillainy: King Olly sits on his throne in a rather relaxed position.

* PurpleIsPowerful: He is often represented by the color purple (along with [[GoldColoredSuperiority gold]]) and is the most powerful enemy in the entire game.

* HairFlip: Whenever he appears, he tosses his hair, with two exceptions. The first exception is when he enters in the room before his throne room (though he tosses his hair right before he sets Stapler on the heroes). The second exception is when he is [[ThroneRoomThrowdown confronted in his throne room]].

* SigilSpam: An emblem of his head is featured on many obstacles put in Mario's way, including the lid of the Colored Pencils, the roll of Tape, and smaller Olly Tape that functions similarly to Bowser Tape from ''Sticker Star''.

* ColdHam: At the beginning of the game, he delivers a speech clarifying his identity and goals without his expression changing from his usual uncaring stare. However in the final battle, he becomes a LargeHam.

* TsurimeEyes: He has eyes that are very sharp looking (his other, non-visible eye is the same shape as the one that is visible).

* TsurimeEyes: He has eyes that are very sharp looking.

* MirrorBoss: :The first phase of his boss fight has him fold himself into his own versions of the Vellumentals, which needs to be combatted with Olivia's Vellumental transformations. His third phase also has him grow his own pair of 1,000-Fold Arms, with Mario ultimately defeating him with his own as well (with some help from Olivia turning into a giant hammer). His second phase is an inversion -- he transforms into an origami {{Kaiju}}, and Olivia folds Bowser into an identical monster to fight him.

* EvilIsPetty: Seeing himself as artistic perfection, he took his creator inscribing a kind and hopeful message onto him as a careless scribble and ran off with Olivia's paper and the would-be Legion of Stationery in tow. However, because Toads all look so similar, he was essentially seeing his creator everywhere he went, and decided to [[FinalSolution fix this problem to the furthest extreme possible.

* FinalSolution: His axe to grind is a [[BreakingOldTrendssurprising first]] for the series: he's not after Peach, Bowser and his army, or even the Mario Bros., his grudge is against all ''Toads''. Because his creator whom he believed slighted him was a Toad, and because [[YouAllLookFamiliar Toads are a race of near-identical people]], Olly's means of reconciling this situation is to use the 1,000 Crane wish to wipe out all Toads '''[[PutThemAllOutOfMyMisery everywhere]]'''.

* WorthyOpponent: He comes to see Mario as one by the end of the game, even promising to honor him by [turning his body into the last paper crane should he win their fight.

* AlternateCompanyEquivalent: He shares a lot in common with [[spoiler:[[VideoGame/Splatoon2 Commander Tartar]]; he was created by a higher being (the Origami Craftsman vs the Professor) with the purpose of being a better leader for the future, but misinterpreted the message and gained an intense hatred of a major species (Toads vs Inklings), and sparking a war of genocide against them. They both even reuse an enemy species molded into their own images against them (the Folded Soldiers vs Sanitised Octolings)]].
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:Everything started when he saw himself with a scribble on his paper. It isn't until the end when Olivia reads it out loud that Olly learns that he was rampaging for nothing; the scribble was a simple wish for him to be a wise and kind king.]]
* ArchnemesisDad: Despite being "brother and sister", he made Olivia. [[spoiler:This means that her wish to undo all his damage undoes herself as well.]]
* ArtificialHuman: He's not real, and never was. He's not a representative of any race, nor is there any kind of Origami Kingdom; rather, [[spoiler:he was created by a Toad Origami Craftsman and given a soul through the Fold of Life]].
* AscendedMeme: [[spoiler:The fandom has a rather burning dislike of how all the [=NPCs=] ''Paper Mario'' games after ''Super'' are same-y Toads, leading to a good number of jokes. Come ''Origami King'' and its titular antagonist, it's no longer a joke: King Olly has a seething hatred of his Toad creator and sees his face on all other Toads wherever he goes, driving him to [[FinalSolution erase them all]].]]

* AxCrazy: He superficially puts on the air of a proper ruler, but just beneath the surface is an utterly deranged individual driven by nothing but obsessiveness and uncontrollable rage.
* BerserkButton: [[spoiler:Hates, hates, and '''really hates''' the Toads.]]

* BreakingOldTrends: Unlike most villains, who go after Mario & Luigi, Bowser or his minions, or even Princess Peach, [[spoiler:he's going after the normal Toads. '''All''' the normal Toads, with complete extermination as his stated and demonstrated end goal]].

* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: Given his pretty good track record of keeping ahead of Mario, Olly inevitably fumbles at the last second trying to spite him [[spoiler:by folding Peach into the Origami Castle... when he only needed to fold one more crane. He planned to fold Mario into the crane -- he could've just as easily folded ''Peach'' and skipped the whole final battle ''and'' still stuck it to Mario]].
* DisproportionateRetribution: [[spoiler:He was ''livid'' to find the paper he was folded on scribbled with and thus wants revenge by ''destroying every single Toad'' in return as revenge on the Toad who created him.]]

* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Is very confused when called a monster for [[spoiler:turning Peach into a stained window]], claiming that [[spoiler:she]] is most likely happier like that.
* EvilIsPetty: Seeing himself as artistic perfection, he took his creator inscribing a kind and hopeful message onto him as a careless scribble and ran off with Olivia's paper and the would-be Legion of Stationery in tow. ** {{Pride}}. Since he's origami, he believes himself better than the paper denizens of the world. So much that he takes a note of love from the Origami Craftsman as a scribble and an insult, [[spoiler:deciding to wish all Toads into basic paper instead of just talking it over]].
** {{Wrath}}. All of his motives stem from his burning hatred of Toads. So much so that it turns into poison during the final phase of his fight. [[spoiler:The entire game could have been avoided had he got someone to read what the note that made him go mad actually said, which he realizes as he dies.]]

* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When exerting his power over origami, his one visible eye glows purple and red. [[spoiler:His final phase has him glowing all the time.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: In ''Manga/SuperMarioBrosMangaMania'' he has one of these once it's revealed what the Origami Craftsman really wrote and as such, Olivia and Olly restore the Mushroom Kingdom.]]
* HeroKiller: Once he's folded 999 cranes and Mario's shown up to become the thousandth and final, Olly has no reason to keep Peach around any more -- so he folds her into part of his castle. While Mario manages to defeat [[spoiler:Stapler]] just moments before confronting Olly, which frees the Folded Soldiers, Peach has already been [[spoiler:integrated into the castle]], thus it's too late for her. [[spoiler:Only through the very wish that Olly was attempting the 1,000-Crane Technique for is Peach able to be restored through wholesale wishing all of Olly's handiwork undone.]]
* InTheirOwnImage: As mentioned above, his EvilPlan involves him trying to remake the Mushroom Kingdom and the entire world into his image [[spoiler:along with committing genocide on a lot of innocent Toads]].

** [[spoiler:The scribble on his paper only wished he became a wise and kind king. He ended up becoming the opposite.]]
** [[spoiler:While he somewhat has a point about all Toads looking the same, his creator, the Origami Craftsman, is one of the few Toads that does stand out, being differentiated by his outfit.]]
* IrrationalHatred: [[spoiler:Was so pissed over the scribble made by the Origami Craftsman that it extended to every single Toad and culminated in a plan to kill them all.]]
* JerkAss: Crush your own sister with a boulder? Check. Kill your own minions? Check. [[spoiler:Attempt to get rid millions of innocent people? Check.]]

* KnightOfCerebus: While the previous two games had Bowser possessed by strange artifacts with no known motives, King Olly is a no-nonsense villain whose sole presence darkens the scene with his motives of [[spoiler:creating and using the 1,000 Paper Crane technique to make a wish to kill all Toads in existence]] being so utterly and horrendously vile that it gives even ''Bowser'', a Koopa who takes immeasurable pride in being a villain, [[EvenEvilHasStandards some pause]]. He also takes matters into his own hands by [[spoiler:throwing a boulder to trap Olivia in which results in Bobby’s HeroicSacrifice]].
* MirrorBoss: [[spoiler:The first phase of his boss fight has him fold himself into his own versions of the Vellumentals, which needs to be combatted with Olivia's Vellumental transformations. * MorphicResonance: [[spoiler:Like Olivia, Olly retains some aspects of his appearance when he transforms into the Vellumentals. In his case, his transformations have his crown, eyes, bangs, and color scheme.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:He has this reaction after Olivia actually ''reads'' the writing the Origami Craftsman put on him, realizing that he did the exact opposite of what his creator wanted him to be: a kind and fair king.]]
* OmnicidalManiac: Folding Princess Peach and many of Bowser's minions leaned him on this, but he truly dove into it when he reveals [[spoiler:his end goal for the Toads, an act so disgusting that even ''Bowser'' states that Olly is insane]].
* OneWingedAngel: All phases of his boss battle involve him shapeshifting into a more monstrous form. [[spoiler:On the first phase, he uses his own Magic Circles to transform into the Vellumentals. After that fails, he refolds himself into a giant paper sumo, using this form to combat a similarly-transformed Bowser. Finally, he uses all of his hatred and evil to supersize himself, gaining massive origami arms in the process.]]
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Subverted, Olly isn't just sitting in his throne room waiting for you to destroy the streamers and take him out. [[spoiler:He's folding 1,000 origami cranes to have his wish granted to [[FinalSolution exterminate all Toads everywhere]]. His forays off the throne are to buy himself time just as much as they are to destroy Mario.]]
* PoorCommunicationKills: [[spoiler:Had he just asked the Origami Craftsman to explain what the message on his paper meant, he would've never become a genocide-seeking tyrant in the first place.]]
* ThePowerOfHate: [[spoiler:His hatred of the Toads, Mario, and Olivia's refusal to join him causes him to fold the world around him into his own grand design. During the final phase of his battle, this anger and hatred manifests as a cloud of poisonous gas that will slowly engulf the battlefield, killing Mario instantly if he's unable to defeat him within the time limit.]]

* RealityWarper: [[spoiler:Using the power of origami and his seething rage, he completely changes the area around him to flip over the ring board, remove the Toad audience, and surround the area with living cootie-catchers. And upon getting even angrier, the castle walls completely disappear, replaced with an AmazingTechnicolorBattlefield.]]
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: After his final battle against Mario, Olly becomes mortally wounded to the point of being irreparable and can only laugh when he found that [[spoiler:his little scribble wasn't an insult, but an innocent ''wish''. He realizes what his actions have led to and finally made peace with Mario and Olivia, requesting them to fold him into the last paper crane in order to complete the 1,000-Cranes Technique and undo his terrible deeds throughout the Mushroom Kingdom]].

* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler: In ''Manga/SuperMarioBrosMangaMania'', he never dies and instead has a HeelFaceTurn and works with Olivia to restore the Mushroom Kingdom to its former glory]].
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: His entire rampage was caused by a simple message on his paper. [[spoiler:If he actually took the time to get someone to read it, he'd learn that the message was a wish to be a fair and kind king, which was the exact ''opposite'' of what he became.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:He snaps in absolute rage the moment Olivia tells him that Toads and paperkind aren't as bad as he thought. It gets even worse after Bowser pushes him off the arena in the second phase of his fight.]]
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: The game itself is mostly comedic, but Olly is a deathly serious and cold-hearted antagonist who wants to turn all the paper inhabitants in the world into mindlessly obedient soldiers...[[spoiler:save for the Toad populace, for whom he wants much, ''much'' worse.]]
* VisionaryVillain: He dreams of creating a glorious kingdom for origami-kind... [[spoiler:which involves killing every single Toad across the world.]]
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: As Olly puts it at during the final fight, "origami represents the limitless power of transformation" — he isn't only able to fold others, but also able to refold himself in a variety of ways, as his Shy Guy disguise shows. [[spoiler:This is also his only means of offence, refolding himself into a myriad of forms to fight Mario.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: The fact that [[spoiler:he created Olivia and his true motive for targeting the Toads]] are well hidden until the Purple Streamer arc.
* WorthyOpponent: He comes to see Mario as one by the end of the game, even promising to honor him by [[spoiler:turning his body into the last paper crane]] should he win their fight.

* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Olly's Cain. [[spoiler:Though it's more like ArchnemesisDad, due to being brought to life by Olly.]]

* GoneHorriblyRight: [[spoiler:Olly laments that he made Olivia so perfect and pure that she was unwilling to go along with his plan to subjugate the rest of the world into origami.]]
* HeroicBSOD: After realizing [[spoiler:Bobby exploded to save her life]], she rushes into a corner of the mines and collapses into a crying heap, unable to bring herself to move or summon the will to go any further. It take's [[spoiler:Bobby's spirit]] prompting Mario to show her the [[ChekhovsGun Goomba paper maché head that made her laugh]] to get her willing to continue again.

* DisappointedByTheMotive: She's left utterly flabbergasted upon the discovery that Olly's rampage and [[FantasticRacism hatred]] of Toads, [[spoiler:which spirals into OmnicidalManiac territory]], is simply because [[spoiler:he [[DisproportionateRetribution took a kind and hopeful message scribbled on him by his creator as a "careless scrawl"]] and [[FantasticRacism all Toads look the same to him]]]].

* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:To undo all the damage her brother had done to the world she uses her wish to undo all of Olly's origami, which also includes her. Like Bobby, she doesn't come back.]]

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: She's bubbling with energy and optimistic, so it is ''not'' a good sign when she hits her HeroicBSOD after [[spoiler:realizing Bobby sacrificed himself to save her from the boulder.]]

* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler: She's still alive in ''Manga/SuperMarioBrosMangaMania'']].

* SurvivorsGuilt: [[spoiler:Briefly falls into this after Bobby dies, unable to move on until Mario uses the Paper Maché Goomba head.]]
* TenderTears: She's sweet-natured and friendly, but also takes her brother's horrendous acts to the populace ''very'' personally, and sometimes it gets to her to this extent -- alongside certain other misfortunes she and Mario are made to endure, [[spoiler:such as Bobby's death]].
* ThisCannotBe: A dramatic version of this trope. Olivia says this when she realizes that [[spoiler:Bobby detonated himself to save her from the boulder and is thus dead.]]
