A red echidna from Angel Island and guardian of the Master Emerald. [[Characters/SonicTheHedgehogKnucklesTheEchidna Knuckles]] was introduced as an antagonist, having been told by Dr. Eggman into thinking that Sonic and Tails were planning to steal the Master Emerald, only to find out what's really going on when Eggman betrayed him and stole the Emerald himself, forcing him to ally with Sonic and Tails to stop him. Since then, he would become one of Sonic's chief friends and oldest rivals, although owing to his status as a guardian, he's kept out of the action most of the time.\\

A sneaky, devious purple-clad man with an intense hatred for/obsession with Luigi (it's hard to tell). He and his partner in crime Wario get up to all sorts of mischief in the Mushroom Kingdom, albeit mostly in spin-off adventures. In ''Smash'', despite not appearing in the Wario series proper, Waluigi is treated as a ''Wario'' universe character to match his "brother", and uses an appropriately zany and tricky fighting style.
