I wouldn\'t call decapitation mundane oranti-climatic. Also, don\'t spoil the whole thing and let\'s wait to see if he\'s dead or not. And no spoilers above the example lines.

Sly, rude and disrespectful towards the World Government, Doflamingo is sadistically playful with others, and seems to delight in causing and participating in chaos. He is the head of a massive slaver ring that caters towards the Celestial Dragon nobility [[spoiler:although he appears to be backing out if his remarks to his minion Disco are worth anything]], and he is a believer in the New Age, an era where pirates focus on what's around them rather than embark on pursuits of romanticism, making him the antithesis of the Great Age of Pirates that Gold Roger set in motion. He ate the String-String Fruit (''Ito Ito no Mi''), which allows him to produce strings and literally manipulate people like puppets, sever limbs with ease, and travel across the sky just as easily. [[spoiler: He also demonstrates Armament and Conqueror's Haki.]]

[[spoiler:After the time skip, it is revealed he is also a broker of knowledge and goods in the underworld, going by the alias "Joker." He has since abdicated his position on the Seven Warlords. How to describe these nut jobs? The Seven Warlords of the Sea (七武海, ''Shichibukai'') are former pirates who allied themselves with the World Government in exchange for their bounties being rescinded and a large degree of autonomy in their dealings. Along with the [[Characters/OnePieceTheFourEmperors Four Emperors]] and [[Characters/OnePieceTheMarines Marines]], they are one of the Three Superpowers that define the current era. Oh, [[EnemyMine and they all hate each other.]]

-----
!!This page is in need of some WikiMagic for the Kuma and Moria folders.
-----

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:In General]]
!!Tropes associated with the Seven Warlords of the Sea as a whole:

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: With the notable exceptions of Mihawk, Jinbei and Kuma, all the Warlords have large organizations of powerful fighters supporting them, and are usually the [[LargeAndInCharge biggest]] and strongest member of the groups they lead, especially with Moria and his zombified crew [[spoiler: prior his expulsion from the Warlord group]].
* {{Badass}}: Must be on the resume. Blackbeard got enlisted immediately by successfully defeating and capturing [[spoiler:Portgas D. Ace]], and [[spoiler:Trafalgar Law of "The Eleven Supernovas" likewise became one after giving the WG the hearts of 100 pirates]].
** [[spoiler:During the Marineford War only 5 Warlords are actually present. Oars, Jr., a giant among giants, throws a marine battleship into the main plaza, and the [[BadassCrew Whitebeard pirates]] begin to invade in full force. What happens next? Kuma, Doflamingo, and Moria casually proceed to use Oars for target practice. The especially badass part? ''[[CurbStompBattle Kuma's first attack was practically overkill]], [[KickThemWhileTheyAreDown Doflamingo attacked in self-defense even though he easily dodged Oars' final attack]], [[FinishingStomp and Moria just wanted Oars dead so he could zombify the body.]]'' Hawkeye and Hancock weren't needed. When Luffy shows up directly after that with the 2 Warlords thought to be imprisoned, it's fair to say that it throws several monkey wrenches into the mix]]...
* BalanceOfPower: Collectively, they act as the World Government's buffer against the Four Emperors. Seems to have varying degrees of success.
* BoxedCrook: Their bounties are frozen, and are given certain privileges in exchange for hunting down pirates, and giving a length of their loot to them.
* CarnivalOfKillers: [[PlayingWithATrope Played With]]. Not all of of them are directly opposed to Luffy: Mihawk is neutral and interested in his journey; Hancock was initially antagonistic, but later pulled a HeelFaceTurn and fell in love with him; while Jinbei immediately offered to help Luffy, befriended him, [[spoiler:and was even asked to join Luffy's crew]]. Though, the latter forfeited his position.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: All of them are implied to have a very strong [[FreudianExcuse reasons]] for why they're the way they are.
** Crocodile has a strongly implied one.
** Moriah's entire crew was killed, leading to his desire for an indestructible, but expendable army for companionship.
** Hancock was a slave to the Celestial Dragons. This entailed being forced to eat a Devil Fruit for the nobles' amusement, being given a brand marking their slavery, and ''something'' that led to her despising all men before she met Luffy.
** Blackbeard during his short time as a Warlord is also strongly implied to have one by [[AllThereInTheManual Oda in possible designs for the Warlords as children]]--[[spoiler: rather than being as carefree as he is now [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/c/c2/Kid_blackbeard.PNG he is holding both arms around his legs in fetal position while crying]]]]
** Averted with Jinbe, who is the only one so far whose past actually [[TookALevelInKindness improved his outlook]], rather than [[JadeColoredGlasses making him jaded]] like the others.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Defeating one of them is a ''big deal'' in the One Piece world, and the WG's usage of them relies on this ''never'' happening to them by anything less than one of the Four Emperors themselves. If it happens to one of them, especially in public, then they risk expulsion. Case in point: Crocodile. [[spoiler:In fact, Moriah's BadassDecay is what got him kicked out]].
* TheDreaded: A large part of the reason why the World Government enlists them, and why they allow them to stay. It's later revealed in a conversation with Kuma, that if that reputation is seriously affected (e.g. loss to rookie pirate, poor showing in battle etc.) could result in their expulsion. Most of them never even personally knew each other before the Paramount War, but have heard of each other.
** This principle is demonstrated magnificently by [[spoiler:Buggy the Clown's]] recent inclusion in the group; being a relatively pathetic fighter, and hilariously weak compared to the other Warlords, is no obstacle if the world and the authorities *believe* you to be a threat. At the end of the day, the Warlords are a propaganda vehicle used by the World Government to intimidate lesser pirates and those who would dream of joining them as much as dealing with the New World. A criminal that's both cooperative and seen by the joe public as a fearsome big-shot is more than welcome.
* EnemyMine: With Pirates, and ultimately the WG itself.
* JadeColoredGlasses: [[DarkAndTroubledPast Their experiences on the seas]] has given all of them a cynical outlook on the world in some form, either about the Golden Age Of Piracy, or concepts such as justice, and belief in morality. However, none of them are [[NietzscheWannabe nihilistic]], and some such as Crocodile, Doflamingo and [[spoiler:Teach]] seeked to [[TakeOverTheWorld dominate the world]] in some form either by [[{{Ubermensch}} imposing their own values]] or by [[BiggerStick superior military might]]. Jinbe is an [[InvertedTrope inversion]] as his life started out rough, but became gradually optimistic as time went on.
* MysteriousPast: So far, we know very little about their pasts, even the more recent members. We just know that [[FamedInStory they're very famous]]. Only Hancock's and Jinbe's [[{{Backstory}} backstories]] were shown in some detail.
* OneManArmy: Just one of them was required to take over a country for the WG. Or "liberate it" as they call it. Crocodile was assigned as "Alabasta's guardian".
* {{Privateer}}s: Only Kuma seems to actually follow through his job [[spoiler: and even he can't be trusted completely]]
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: None of them really care for the WG, and some have been only to [[DragonWithAnAgenda betray]] [[TheStarscream them]] on occasion. Even the supposedly most loyal member had [[spoiler:saved the Straw Hat Pirates twice]]. They're also not the best of buds, the narration noting [[LampshadeHanging that the very idea of them working together during the build-up to the Paramount War was unthinkable]]. [[spoiler: However they did manage to work briefly together to bring down Oars Jr, although that seemed to be incidental]].
* UltimateJobSecurity: The crap they're allowed to get away with is staggering. The WG apparently consider the pirate problem so dire that they're willing to look over one of them switching sides in the battlefield (sorta), another planning a ZombieApocalypse, and one running a slave ring even after it was abolished two centuries before (though the main reason why that was overlooked was because it catered to the World Nobles). Though one of the major things that guarantees an expulsion is a very public loss to a relative upstart and/or being exposed as attempting to take over a member state of the Reverie ("liberating countries" is perfectly fine, though). The only other way for them to get kicked out besides the aforementioned BadassDecay is for them to act directly against the World Government very publicly, such as what Crocodile and Jinbei did, as it basically means a resignation from the group.

[[folder:"Hawk-Eye" Dracule Mihawk]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Mihawk_6529.png
-->"There's no strength in swordplay based on force."

->Voiced by: TakeshiAono (JP), HirohikoKakegawa (JP, episode 461+), Andrew Paull (EN, 4Kids), Creator/JohnGremillion (EN, Funi)

The first of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced, his appearance marking their very first mention in fact, Mihawk carries the reputation of the greatest swordsman in the world. Unlike practically every other Pirate and even the other Warlords, he is a loner, sailing the seas in a small boat and never interacting with others unless absolutely necessary. He is said to have had a rivalry with Shanks in the past, and that their duels were truly titanic. It is Zoro's ultimate goal to defeat him and Mihawk, after seeing his warrior spirit, urged Zoro to become stronger and surpass him one day.
-----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: The thing can cut through entire ships and mountains of ice without so much as a scratch.
* AccentAdaptation: He has a French-Caribbean accent in the 4kids dub.
* AloofAlly: To the Marines. Granted, the Warlords aren't exactly known for keeping up their end of the agreement, but it's particularly telling that both the Marines and the ''Warlords themselves'' are visibly surprised when Mihawk actually starts to fight.
* AmbitionIsEvil: He has an interesting take on this trope. In his first appearance he mocked Zoro, for saying his goal was to defeat Mihawk, and Luffy, for wanting to be the Pirate King, saying they were foolish and lofty. However, he seems to greatly admire, or at least approve of, those who have the will to actually try achieving their ambitions no matter how lofty or impossible they are. So it's not so much he has a high opinion of ambition itself, but that he has much greater respect for the will to achieve it.
* AnimalMotifs: The hawk, having sharp, narrow eyes, similar to those of a hawk and even nicknamed "Hawk-Eye".
* AntiVillain: The Noble variant.
* AudibleSharpness: As befitting the most powerful sword in the world.
* {{Badass}}: Being one of the Seven Warlords automatically qualifies you. Scaring the hell out of Shanks' crew just by showing up out of the blue, and being the ''only'' person to soundly curb stomp Zoro after deliberately handicapping ''yourself'', gets you a lifetime membership with benefits.
** BadassBoast: Two memorable ones so far:
-->''"You wouldn't kill a fly with a cannon, would you?"''
-->''"I can't be bothered to remember the name of every worm I cross paths with."''
** BadassInANiceSuit: Not as impressive as Crocodile, but just look at the picture! If the whole Warlord of the Sea thing doesn't work out, he could always go look for work in the next installment of ''PiratesOfTheCaribbean''.
** BadassLongcoat: With a lovely paisley pattern too.
** BadassNormal: He's the only Warlord without a Devil Fruit power or some kind of racial bonus. Despite that, he may very well be the most dangerous of them all.
* BeamSpam: In the anime.
* {{BFS}}: His famed Kokutou Yoru is pretty fucking big.
* BlackSwordsAreBetter: Kokutou Yoru's blade is a shiny black; it's considered the greatest sword in the world.
* BrokenAce: Seems to be rather disillusioned with the world after becoming the greatest swordsman.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: When two prisoners from Impel Down asked if he remembered them while they started to attack, his response was, "I don't remember the name of every insect I crush."
* CallingYourAttacks: Averted. Mihawk doesn't so much as grunt when he attacks, regardless of who he's attacking or how.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: The anime has him jump several hundred feet into the air [[spoiler:before trying to impale Luffy]]. Then there's that whole business with him ''chopping a mountain of ice in half''!
* CherryTapping: Uses a knife to fight Zoro, and easily overpowers him.
* TheComicallySerious: In the anime, after Luffy defeats Arlong and earns his first bounty, Mihawk visits Shanks to deliver the news. A joyous Shanks decides to start partying (''again'', despite being hung over from partying the night before) and offers Mihawk a drink. Mihawk keeps that eternally serious look on his face... and chugs the whole thing in one go.
* CoolSword: Oh yes.
* CreepyCoolCrosses: He wears a cross-shaped necklace, and his sword has a very large hilt that resembles one.
* CurbStompBattle: Almost every fight we've seen him in, [[spoiler:and the only time on-screen someone was giving him a good fight he wasn't using ''any'' of the skills he displayed earlier]].
* [[spoiler:DangerouslyGenreSavvy: He recognizes there's more to Luffy than meets the eye right after his first meeting, which leads him to single-mindedly pursue Luffy for most of the Marineford battle without holding back to see just how much fate favors him. While he was doing so, he was the first person in the story to realize Luffy's ability to make friends and allies without even doing anything special is the most dangerous power in the world.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Hinted at, [[http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130409222341/onepiece/images/a/a1/Kid_mihawk.PNG his SBS picture]] as a child depicts that he was at least in a state of constant need of survival.
* DeadpanSnarker: After Zoro challenge him to a duel, he brings out his cross pendant and reveals a six-inch dagger, explaining that he's not the type to use his all against weaklings:
-->'''Mihawk:''' Unfortunately, I don't carry any blade smaller than this one.
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler:Mihawk dogged Luffy during Marineford more than any other character save ''Akainu''. Even when someone showed up to stop Mihawk's pursuit, it never lasted long, and once they were dealt with or distracted by another opponent, Mihawk went right back to pursuing Luffy.]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: He hunted Don Krieg's fleet across the Grand Line and utterly destroyed it because... they woke him up from his nap. That, and to kill time.
* [[spoiler:ExcuseMeWhileIMultitask: When Vista fought Mihawk during Marineford, Mihawk spent the first half not even looking at Vista, deflecting his blows, and doing an internal monologue about Luffy's ability to sway both former enemies and complete strangers to his side. That said, it was obvious neither Mihawk nor Vista were taking that fight seriously.]]
* FamedInStory: His duels with Shanks are reputed to have shaken the Grand Line. The fact that '''Whitebeard''' of all people said they were '''still''' ringing in his ears is the icing on the cake.
* FriendlyEnemy: To the Straw Hat crew, after a fashion. Specifically, he keeps tabs on Luffy's and Zoro's growth as pirates, boasts that Luffy's goal of becoming Pirate King is more dangerous than surpassing Mihawk himself (which is Zoro's dream), gives a mental apology to Shanks before [[spoiler:fighting Luffy at Marineford]], and [[spoiler:agrees to train Zoro during the TimeSkip for the sake of Zoro being better able to protect his TrueCompanions]].
* HighCollarOfDoom
* [[spoiler:HilarityEnsues]]:
** [[spoiler:To try to get away from Mihawk, Luffy uses ''Buggy'' as a human shield, then ''throws'' the top half of the poor guy at Mihawk. What follows is nothing short of pure comedy gold.]]
** [[spoiler:Mihawk coming back to his creepy castle and finding out that ''Perona'' and ''Zoro'' had taken up residence while he was away]].
* [[spoiler:HoistByHisOwnPetard]]: [[spoiler:Deliberately invoked: He decided it was more beneficial to spend a few years training Zoro, who has stated that his only real goal in life is to defeat Mihawk, rather than wait around for possibly decades before he could get a good match out of him]].
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: Not exactly "die", but he seems slightly bitter about the fact that [[TheRival Shanks]] lost his arm.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Effortlessly holds off Zoro's three swords with a knife, deflects bullets with his sword, and slices though a ship the size of an office building with ''just one swing''. ''Without making physical contact with the ship''. Then there's [[http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20101004031517/onepiece/images/f/f4/Mihawk_slash.png this]]. There's a reason people (in-universe) call it "the World's Strongest Slash".
* INeedYouStronger: Invokes this trope practically word-for-word after he meets Zoro.
-->''"You shouldn't rush these things, young man. You're strong, but there is much for you to learn. No matter how many years it takes, I will hold this title as the greatest in the world, and wait for you. Until that day, you must hone your skills. Then... SEEK ME OUT, RORONOA ZORO!!!"''
* InformedAbility: Despite a few brief (and admittedly impressive) showings of force, we've yet to see ''exactly'' why the man is/was considered an equal to the Emperor Shanks. But considering that their fights were said to actually ''shake the Grand Line''...
** FridgeBrilliance: Remember, in the War of Marineford, Mihawk is fighting on behalf of the World Government. As mentioned in AloofAlly, Mihawk is known for being even ''less'' cooperative with the World Government than the other Warlords, who ''themselves'' have approximately zero loyalty to the WG. So of course he's not going to be putting much effort into helping them.
* IShallTauntYou: When Zoro challenged him in East Blue, Mihawk apologized that he didn't have anything smaller than his four-inch dagger.
* ItAmusedMe: Mihawk's stated reason for hunting the remainder of Krieg's fleet from the Grand Line all the way to East Blue and utterly destroying it?
-->''"To kill time."''
* KnifeNut: Though not to the same extent that the trope is typically applied, he only uses it to conserve his power against the obviously outmatched Zoro.
* KnightOfCerebus: No enemy prior to his introduction and for quite a while afterwards posed as much of a threat to Luffy and the others as Mihawk did during the few brief chapters he appeared in.
* MasterSwordsman: He is renowned for this.
* MrFanservice: Just look at the picture!
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Like everyone else on this page.
* NiceHat: Completed by a giant plume.
* NobleDemon: He works alongside the government, but so far he has yet to display any outright antagonistic actions in the series [[spoiler: save for opposing Luffy during the Marineford Arc and even then, it was just business.]] Mihawk has been shown to have a cordial relationship with Shanks and even hopes Zoro will surpass him.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: He's visually based on real pirate Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts, who also [[spoiler:lived in a hard-to-reach creepy castle]].
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: His first fight against Zoro.
** Ironically, that beatdown was holding quite a few bars on what he could have done if he'd had half a mind.
* NoShirtLongJacket
* OlderThanHeLooks: Would you believe he was 41 when he was first introduced?
* OneHitKill: When he's serious, most of his fights end in a single blow.
* OneManArmy: The man can cut ships in half with no effort, and does so for fun.
* TheOtherDarrin: From episode 461, TakeshiAono had fallen ill, so he was replaced by HirohikoKakegawa initially as a stand-in till the former recovered. Unfortunately, TakeshiAono had died from a stroke, thus making him a permanent replacement.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Well when you can single-handedly sink an entire fleet of ships...
* RazorWind / SwordBeam: Bonus points for being the same eerie green as the candles on his boat.
* RedBaron: Probably the most notable example apart from Whitebeard.
* RedOniBlueOni: His blue to Shanks' red.
* TheRival: To Shanks. This changed after Shanks lost his arm, however. He seems to see Zoro as having the potential to someday become his new rival, and in fact appears to be actively rooting for this to happen.
** [[spoiler:Forget "actively rooting". He decided to ''make'' Zoro into his Rival by training him specifically for the job]].
* RuleOfSymbolism: Hm... let's see:
** Has a sword with a heavily ornate, cross-shaped design.
** Sails around in a coffin-shaped boat with black sails and eerie green-flamed candles.
** [[spoiler:Lives in a creepy Gothic castle on a creepy, perpetually-twilight island]].
* [[spoiler:ScrewThisImOuttaHere]]: [[spoiler:The moment Shanks shows up at Marineford, Mihawk puts his sword away, says fighting Shanks wasn't part of the deal, and makes his exit]].
* [[spoiler:SinkOrSwimMentor]]: [[spoiler:Became one to ''Zoro'']]. [[DidntSeeThatComing We were as surprised as you]].
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Subverted. His debut marked the first mention of the Seven Warlords, but he may be the most powerful of them (if his former rivalry with one of the Four Emperors is any indication).
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: There's some minor contention on whether his first name is "Dracule" or some variation of "Juraquille", though the former is the spelling almost universally accepted by the western world.
** Ultimately resolved with the release of the One Piece Databook Green. It's "Dracule".
* TheStoic: One of the most serious characters in the One Piece world, you'll hardly even see this man smile, let alone raise his voice.
** NotSoStoic: He broke out into full grins twice, back to back. First when Luffy told him his goal, and then when Zoro swore he would never lose to anyone again.
*** He also recently burst out laughing (and it was with the stereotypical "Mwahahaha!") when [[spoiler:Zoro begged him to become his disciple]].
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: Mihawk's entire philosophy on fighting, and swordsmanship in particular, is using only as much force as you need to get the job done, and not an ounce more.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: In the anime, [[http://thumbnails.hulu.com/670/50007670/117626_512x288_generated.jpg his eyes]] are colored yellow to reinforce the AnimalMotif ThemeNaming. All but the most {{Badass}} of fighters start quaking in their boots looking directly at them.
* [[SuperSenses Super Vision]]: There's a reason he's called "Hawk-Eye" (excluding the above); not even [[spoiler:Luffy in [[FlashStep Second Gear]]]] could move fast enough for Mihawk to lose track of [[spoiler:him]].
* SwordLines: In the anime, Kokuto Yoru leaves a green (originally purple) trail behind it when it's swung.
* [[spoiler:TemptingFate: Literally. The whole reason Mihawk attacked Luffy during Marineford was just to see whether or not Luffy would somehow be able to get away from him alive.]]
* VictoryIsBoring: Certainly gives this impression. His constant search for a [[TheRival rival]], combined with the fact that he's known to attack ''entire fleets'' over something as trivial as disturbing his nap, seems to be his way of alleviating boredom.
* VocalDissonance: Initially with [[TakeshiAono his first voice actor]], Mihawk sounds much older than his age suggests, though he often used that vocal tone for doing BigBad characters like Demon King Piccolo in the 80s. his new voice, HirohikoKakegawa does not have this problem, sounding more appropriate for his age.
* WineIsClassy: When not out slaughtering pirates, he can be seen relaxing in his mansion with a book and [[AGlassOfChianti a glass of red wine]].
* [[WorldsStrongestMan World's Greatest Swordsman]]: '''Everyone''' in the setting recognizes him as ''the'' greatest swordsman in the world, and he more than lives up to the honor.
* TheWorfEffect: During the Marineford arc, Mihawk makes [[spoiler:Luffy]] look like an amateur. In the anime, Mihawk defeats [[spoiler:Jinbe]], who had interrupted his schooling of [[spoiler:Luffy]], in one blow.
** Let it be said that when Mihawk decides to fight, SOMEONE IS GETTING WORFED.
* WorthyOpponent: Originally with Shanks, but after Shanks lost his arm Mihawk no longer considered him as such. Once he met Zoro he started hoping the latter would fill the role, after he does some major [[TookALevelInBadass level grinding]] at least.

[[folder:"Tyrant" Bartholomew Kuma]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/TV_Tropes_-_Kuma_5952.png
-->"We have no obligation to cooperate with the Marines save where the government is directly involved."

->Voiced by: Creator/HideyukiHori (JP)

The fourth of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to be formally introduced. Kuma is a very large man who is always seen carrying a bible. He has a reputation for being an incredibly ruthless pirate who crushed anyone to stand in his way, yet his quiet, calm demeanor and his (in hindsight) merciful actions fly in the face of that. He is also known for following the World Government's orders to the letter, unlike the other Warlords. Yet he also seems to follow the code of Moral Justice, rather than the seemingly more prevalent Absolute Justice, and unlike many other characters, seems to have an idea of what goes on behind the scenes.
[[spoiler: He also ate the Paw-Paw Fruit (''Nikyu Nikyu no Mi'') and is the prototype for the Pacifista project known as PX-0. It also turns out that he is a member of the Revolutionary Army.]]

His former bounty was 296,000,000 berries.
-----
* [[spoiler:ActuallyADoombot]]: [[spoiler: The Pacifistas are modeled after his likeness. The only differences between them and him are the Bible he carries around and his Devil Fruit powers.]]
* AnimalMotifs: The bear, appearing to be frightening and extremely large, and having a Devil Fruit that gives him bear paws. [[spoiler:He's also nicer than the rest of the other members.]]
* ArchEnemy: Subverted with Luffy. The latter should by all means hate Kuma for doing the unthinkable: [[spoiler:[[BreakingTheFellowship taking his crew away from him]]]]. But by the time he meets him again, well... [[spoiler:he's not himself]].
** [[spoiler: He doesn't hate him as much as he also learned the '''real''' reason to why he did so, as well as learning he was once a fellow Revolutionary with his dad, Dragon]].
* {{Badass}}
* BearsAreBadNews:
** Played pretty straight the first time.
** Subverted later, as [[spoiler:he actually saved the Straw Hats' lives on Sabaody, even if they didn't realize it]].
** Played straight with [[spoiler:his cyborg copies, even if they don't have his Devil Fruit power]].
* [[spoiler:BreathWeapon]]: [[spoiler:His cybernetic modifications allow him to fire a [[FrickinLaserBeams laser beam]] from his mouth]].
* {{Catchphrase}}: "If you were to go on a trip, [[PreAsskickingOneLiner where would it be]]?"
* [[spoiler:CyberneticsEatYourSoul]]: [[spoiler:It's stated by Donquixote Doflamingo that they slowly replaced his limbs and body from the legs up, and guess what? His head and brain are gone now as well. [[ThatManIsDead "Tyrant Kuma" is dead]]]].
* EnigmaticMinion: He's known for following the World Government's orders more than the other Warlords, but it's clear that there's more to him than meets the eye.
* GeniusBruiser: One of the largest and strongest men in the One Piece world, yet is very intelligent and perceptive, seemingly having a vast geographic knowledge of the known world judging by the [[spoiler:separation of the Straw Hats]], and his status as TheChessmaster. [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/a/a1/Bartholomew_Kuma_as_a_Kid.png Even in his youth, he was known to read books on philosophers while carrying massive burdens on his back]].
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: One of the most powerful characters in the One Piece universe. His power? The ability to push things. [[spoiler: As in the ability to push things miles away in an instant, to push himself so fast it looks like he's teleporting, to create sonic booms by pushing the atmosphere, and even to push away abstract concepts like pain and exhaustion.]]
* [[spoiler:HollywoodCyborg]]: [[spoiler:He's a Pacifista prototype human weapon]].
** [[spoiler:SuperPrototype]]: [[spoiler:The original Pacifista, later finalised as PX-0, complete with BreathWeapon and a [[PowerPalms devil fruit power]] that can slap you halfway across the planet]].
* KnightOfCerebus: He so far has been portrayed very seriously, and has little weird traits or arrogance to soften him unlike most of the Warlords.
** Anytime he shows up by himself, the situation becomes far more desperate.
* [[spoiler:LaResistance]]: [[spoiler:Kuma was a member before his piracy days]].
* LanternJawOfJustice: [[spoiler: He was TheMole at first, but now is a mindless machine.]]
* [[spoiler: TheMole: He turns out to be a member of the Revolutionary Army. He is no longer The Mole after he was turned into a full cyborg with no free will of his own.]]
* MoodWhiplash: His presence in Thriller Bark causes the situation to go from a silly horror parody to very serious, [[spoiler: especially after defeating the already exhausted Straw Hats with no effort.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: [[spoiler:The Straw Hats]] learned this the hard way.
* NiceHat: A tad understated, but the ears make it.
** A flashback shows that Kuma once had a Nice ''Hood'' with ears on it.
* OneManArmy: He was able to defeat [[spoiler:the entire Straw Hat crew]] without even trying.
** ImplacableMan: He's NighInvulnerable after all. [[spoiler: The Straw Hat Pirates were unable to touch nor hurt him, let alone stop.]]
** LightningBruiser: He's big, but he's also among the fastest and strongest characters in the series likely due to his Devil Fruit power to push himself at high speeds which seems like teleporting.
** MadeOfDiamond: Comes with being a [[spoiler:Pacifista]].
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Played with. [[spoiler:Although the Straw Hats are unable to even ''touch'' him, he's able to use his powers to transport them out of harm's way without physically wounding them. The ''emotional'' damage, on the other hand...]]
** [[spoiler: Though it's subverted, when the Straw Hats actually come out of that ordeal stronger than ever before, to the point that Franky calls Kuma a valuable ally.]]
** Played straight when he [[spoiler: injects Zoro with all of Luffy's pain gained from his fight with Oars and Moria, which is played seriously]].
* [[spoiler:PowerPalms]]: [[spoiler:His Devil Fruit gives him [[AddedAlliterativeAppeal powerful paw pad palms]]]].
** [[spoiler:AttackReflector]]: [[spoiler:Any attack that hits his paw pads will just bounce right off, regardless of how much power it has]].
** [[spoiler:HandBlast]]: [[spoiler:His ''Pad Cannon'' which is a paw-shaped [[BlowYouAway air bullet]] created by pushing the air at ''the speed of light'']].
** [[spoiler:HealingHands]]: [[spoiler:Kind of. As mentioned below he can push the pain and fatigue out of a person's body (which is manifested as a paw-shaped bubble) and put it in someone else, which doesn't heal the person's wounds but does free them of their suffering.]]
** [[spoiler:HeartIsAnAwesomePower]]: [[spoiler:His Paw-Paw Fruit allows him to push anything. It sounds crappy and ridiculous, until you realize that he can push ''anything'' from air to pain itself, and even teleport by pushing himself]].
** [[spoiler:MegatonPunch]]: [[spoiler:Basically what the powers of the Paw-Paw Fruit boil down to]].
** [[spoiler:NukeEm]]: [[spoiler:Ursus Shock]].
* TheQuietOne: He doesn't speak as often as the other Warlords.
* [[spoiler:RedEyesTakeWarning]]: [[spoiler:If a red light appears in one of his eye pieces, watch out]].
* RuleOfSymbolism: The bible he carries and his clothes evoke the image of a Catholic priest.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: [[spoiler:Actually Scary Shiny Focusing Lenses, but the effect is the same]].
* TheStoic: Always composed and calm. Always.
* WalkingSpoiler: Probably not quite as much compared to other examples, but most of the things he's done since his second appearance may come as a surprise to fans.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: He was originally going to have [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/a/ae/Early_Kuma.png a steering wheel stuck in his head]], but that idea was dropped from his design and given to Shiki instead.
* TheWorfEffect: A bit of a subversion since we're talking about the Pacifistas (cyborgs modeled after Kuma), but let's roll with it; Remember how ''a single'' Pacifista managed to smack the entire Straw Hat crew around like a bunch of ragdolls? 2 year time skip, and [[spoiler:the Monster Trio destroy ''two'' with relative ease]].
** Subversion somewhat later on when he said that those that got sent were the prototype from two years ago. We got no idea how strong the second version will be...
* [[spoiler:YouShallNotPass]]: [[spoiler:Kuma had a mission directive installed to protect the Thousand Sunny until one of the Straw Hats showed up]].

[[folder:"Heavenly Demon" Donquixote Doflamingo]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Doflamingo_3216.png
-->"The time is almost here. Go and lay the groundwork. A world where only true pirates can survive will soon be upon us. Those without power, flee while you can. The tide will bring those of unmatched power and the New Era will begin!"

->Voiced by: Creator/HideyukiTanaka (JP), RobertMcCollum (EN, Funi)

The third of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced, Doflamingo used to boast the highest known bounty yet revealed in the series at 340 million berries [[spoiler:until Luffy's new 400 million bounty was revealed]].

Except it turns out he was only faking it to lure the Straw Hats into a trap... and that he also happens to be a Celestial Dragon.]]

His former bounty was 340,000,000 Berries.
-----
* AnimalMotifs: The flamingo, wearing pink, flamboyant clothes and walking like a flamingo.
* AmbiguouslyGay: The way he [[RealMenWearPink dresses]], the way he [[LargeHam acts]], and the way he [[FoeYay hits on Crocodile]] could hint this, although it's more likely he was simply mocking Croc given the entourage of scantily clad women lounging with him at his mansion (or at most, a DepravedBisexual).
* ArcVillain: Of the Punk Hazard and Dressrosa arcs, also known as the Pirate Alliance Saga.
* ArchEnemy: [[spoiler:At this point we can safely say that he and Law outright despise each other. Their entire conflict is a big case of ItsPersonal, which doesn't end well for Law.]]
** It's clear that whatever's left of the Riku royal family hates him, and for good reason. [[spoiler:He blackmailed the king for ten billion beli in order to keep Dressrosa, and when the king finally managed to collect it by appealing to the people, Doflamingo used his powers to force the king and his soldiers to start killing people so that Doflamingo could show up and "save" everyone. End result the name of the family was ruined, forcing them off the throne, and practically making them fugitives. King Riku Dold III had his reputation destroyed, deposed by Doflamingo and despised by the very country he tried to protect. Rebecca, his granddaughter, only a child when this occurred, lost her mother and eventually became a convict gladiator, forced to fight and win a thousand battles in order to gain her freedom, and unable to live with the toy who raised her and protected her. The Thunderous Soldier of Rage, his son or son-in-law and the father of Rebecca, was turned into a toy, unable to protect his wife from Doflamingo's forces and had to raise his daughter without ever telling her who he truly was, lest he be tossed into the scrap heap, having realized that his entire family has forgotten his existence. Viola, his daughter, submitted herself into Doflamingo's service under the name Violet in exchange for sparing her father's life, being forced to work as an assassin for the last ten years for the man who ruined her family. Eventually, in the Dressrosa arc, the former two enter a tournament filled with some of the New World's greatest combatants in order to win a devil fruit, with the overall objective of killing him. The latter third plans an assault on the toy factory and a rebellion against Doflamingo with the Tontatta tribe, who have just a good a reason to hate the man as they do. The last switches sides when Sanji reveals he knows she wasn't lying when she stated that she wants Doflamingo dead.]]
* ArmsDealer: He has worked as this under the name of Joker for 10 years following his re-take over of Dressrosa.
* [[spoiler:AristocratsAreEvil: The Donquixote family were the original rulers of Dressrosa, but abdicated their position to the Riku family around 800 years ago. Why? Because a member of the Donquixote family was the king of Dressrosa... and one of the twenty kings that founded the World Government. They left to live in Mariejois, making Donquixote Doflamingo a member of the Celestial Dragons -- a '''''World Noble'''''.]]
* [[spoiler:AssassinOutclassin]]: [[spoiler:Talks over the phone to Vergo, even as one of his subordinates, Baby 5, tried several attempts to assassinate him]].
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He's not only in charge of a pirate crew, but also is, or was, [[spoiler:the King of Dressrosa]]. It would also take nothing less than a Marine Admiral to take him down, and [[spoiler: he shows no hint of fear or apprehension when he actually does encounter the Admiral sent after him]]. At this point, he's probably one of ''the'' single strongest non-Yonkou combatants in the series and has what is most likely the single best track record of them all.
* {{Badass}}: Bonus points for fighting Crocodile in the Marineford War. Even more points for [[spoiler:easily defeating and almost killing Smoker]].
** Even MORE points for [[spoiler: playing both Law and the Marines, leading the latter to send an [[PersonOfMassDestruction Admiral]] to deal with him, and ''having the balls to mouth off to said Admiral''.]]
* BadBoss[=/=]BenevolentBoss: If you're one of his high execs (such as Monet and Vergo), high chances are he'll be the latter to you. If you're merely a peon (such as Bellamy and Disco), he'll be the former. He can sometimes pretend to be the latter to his peons, though.
* BaitTheDog: The BenevolentBoss trait below had redeemed him as a more humane character, just read ArchEnemy above, it just reaffirms Doflamingo as an awful person.
** You know how [[spoiler: Bellamy turned out to be alive after supposedly being killed back at Jaya, this revealed that Doflamingo was a BenevolentBoss. Turns out that he ordered his minions not only to kill him because he failed to kills Luffy, but he had been intending on doing so since he was already considered an "eyesore".]]
* [[spoiler:BerserkButton: Killing a loyal subordinate of his is a bad idea, setting him up and royally fucking him over is an even worse idea, and outing his secret identity (the one that he used in his extensive underworld dealings) will push him over the edge into foaming-at-the-mouth homicidal rage.]]
* BlondGuysAreEvil: Well, that shouldn't be your only clue...
* TheChessmaster: He hides it extremely well. [[spoiler: For example, he has moles (ex-crewmates) like Vergo in high ranking marine positions and pirates like Caesar Clown under his influence. It's implied back on Jaya that he was planning for Smilies to become the new thing even then, and then in the timeskip Caesar just so happens to have developed a weapon named Smiley. Oh, and Smile turns out to be a codename for Artifical Zoan type Devil Fruits, and he has a factory just for producing those. Unfortunately for him, he gets OutGambitted by Law.]]
** [[spoiler: Except not. He was using that as a way to set up Law himself.]]
* [[spoiler:CrazyJealousGuy]]: Apparently is one, since Buffalo mentions that he killed [[spoiler:every fiancee that Baby 5 had]], [[DisproportionateRetribution and burned the towns they lived in to the ground]]. On the hand, [[spoiler:Baby 5 tends to accept proposals too easily anyway]].
* CrazyPrepared: [[spoiler:He managed to get the Mera Mera Fruit shortly after Ace's death, and apparently did so solely to use it as leverage against Luffy if he needed to. That means he held on to a Logia-class fruit for ''two years'', just in case.]]
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Having learned from the mistakes of many, Doflamingo takes great length to ''not'' underestimate the Straw Hats.
* [[spoiler:DarkAndTroubledPast]]: Implied by Doflamingo himself, although the details have yet to be revealed.
-->'''Doflamingo''': [[spoiler:There are few people who have led as unfortunate a life as I have.]]
* DarkSkinnedBlond: In the anime. In the manga he's as pale as everyone else.
* DefectorFromDecadence: [[spoiler:According to him during his talk with Law. He mentions that he's not really with the Celestial Dragons anymore.]]
* DidntSeeThatComing: His plan to trap Luffy falls flat on its face when [[spoiler:Luffy - who he expects to be fighting in the colosseum right now - is now in his palace with Zoro and Violet, and someone else (Sabo) impersonates "Lucy".]]
* TheDon: He is at least connected to some big-league crime operations in some way. [[spoiler: After the timeskip, he has a private Island mansion complete with servants who are his agents, and happens to be the head of most illegal goings on due to his Joker alias, so he most definetly has shades of this.]]
* TheDragon: Seems to be one for the Five Elder Stars. [[DragonWithAnAgenda Though, he's content with doing his own thing]], and made it clear he'll ditch them if he found it too boring.
* EngineeredHeroics: [[spoiler:Ten years ago, he manipulated King Riku and his army into collecting money from his citizens and then massacring them, while he and his group shows up at the right time to "save" the populace and become their new "good" king.]] No wonder he's got [[VillainWithGoodPublicity such a good publicity in the island despite his attitude.]]
* [[spoiler: EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: The news of Monet not responding causes him to go to Punk Hazard by himself to check out the reason why;]] says a lot about his character.
** [[spoiler:He even ''apologizes'' to Vergo, calling him a companion, or, in other words, a friend. There's definitely more to him than we know, most likely having to do with his past, as Vergo said.]]
** [[spoiler:By Buffalo's account, Doflamingo's murders of Baby 5's fiancés were driven by his concern for ''her'', whom he supposedly cares for like a little sister. Considering that Baby 5 tends to accept proposals from sleazes and swindlers, his atrocities might even be seen as a case of extreme BigBrotherInstinct.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He's a self-centered dick and easily one of the nastiest of the Seven Warlords of the Sea [[spoiler:especially considering that he's serving as Caesar Clown's benefactor]], but he's not the type to start fights over dreams, and he even if he is, he'd make sure he didn't lose [[spoiler:which is why he personally (well, [[PeoplePuppets almost personally]]) beat up and dismissed Bellamy]].
** [[spoiler: He also reacted ''very'' badly to Monet's apparent death, to the point that he jumped off a window four stories high to head off to Punk Hazard. Turns out if his subordinates are reliable, he'll care for them more]].
* AFatherToHisMen: You'd never expect it from the guy, but he treats every member of his crew with love and respect, from [[spoiler:silently weeping and driven to a berserk rage over Monet's sacrifice]], to thanking [[spoiler:Vergo]] for his hard work before his (presumed) death, and forgiving Baby 5 and Buffalo when [[spoiler:he finds their still-alive decapitated heads alone on a life boat]]. He even has shown forgiveness towards [[spoiler:Law]] to an extent, willing to take him back despite his betrayal.
* FlatEarthAtheist: In a world that practically ''runs'' on the power of dreams and love of adventure, Doflamingo is the main proponent of an objectivist movement.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: He has yet to remove his sunglasses, but is definitely the most amoral of the Warlords, especially with Moria, Crocodile and Blackbeard who were very malevolent people. [[spoiler: And being an epic scumbag seems to be par for the course for the Celestial Dragons...]]
* GogglesDoNothing: He wore goggles in addition to his sunglasses when he was younger for some reason.
* HiddenDepths: He was [[{{Understatement}} rather upset]] when [[spoiler:Monet didn't answer after being given a fatal wound by Caesar]], and is grateful to [[spoiler:Vergo for sacrificing himself, and even acknowledged how Vergo had been at his side longer than any other, thanking him for all the years of loyal service]]. And the fact that [[spoiler:he went alone to check Punk Hazard out says]] a lot. Not something you'd expect from the most amoral of the Warlords.
** [[spoiler:Going by Monet's last thoughts, there is something far more to him than we think. For one, her thoughts suggest that he, a man who plans to spearhead a movement against an era driven by dreams, aspires to be the ''Pirate King''.]]
** [[spoiler:He's one of the Celestial Dragons. And yet, instead of living like a god-king in Mariejois, he's been putting himself in the line of danger by serving as one of the Seven Warlords, and rules his homeland as a proper king. That's more than can be said of most of the other Celestial Dragons that we've seen.]]
*** [[spoiler:Then again, he did admit that he no longer had his status as World Noble anymore. And there was nothing noble in the way he became a king in the first place...]]
* HopeSpot: As the situation in Punk Hazard escalates, he seems on the verge of losing three of his subordinates though was most distressed about losing the SMILES [[spoiler:as it's later revealed he's making them for a pirate emperor, Kaido]]. He sends two more of his subordinates to check out the matter and they arrive just as Luffy had sent Caesar flying out of the building. Doflamingo's spirits raised a bit upon hearing that since as long as he had Caesar the SMILES Devil Fruits could still be made. [[spoiler:And then said subordinates are defeated and Caesar is captured to be used as a bargaining chip against him.]]
* HumansAreBastards: He claims that all humans, however proper and respectable they may be, deep down crave for blood and death of others.
* TheHyena: It is very rare to see him not laughing, and even rarer to see him without a smile.
** He's also the boss of a guy called Bellamy "[[RedBaron The Hyena]]."
* IslandBase: Well, although it has yet to be shown on panel yet, he certainly has his very own private island hideaway. [[spoiler: After the time skip, his mansion, on a island called Dressrosa, is his kingdom and the hub for his criminal empire]].
** [[spoiler: However, it seems its not fully under his ownership as when Law states his ultimatum, Baby 5 exclaims they'll never be allowed there again if Doflamingo steps down as a Warlord meaning it might be on the World Government's payroll.]]
** [[spoiler: Or, alternatively, that the Government are at least aware that it is a home base for Doflamingo's illicit operations and a number of nasty folk, but turn a blind eye to it because of his Warlord status. The nullification of Doflamingo's treaty with the Government would mean that they can no longer ignore the criminal operations there]].
** [[spoiler: Of course, he was faking it all along... and it turns out that his family--who became part of the Celestial Dragons--were the original royal family who controlled that island.]]
* [[spoiler:ItsPersonal: It becomes increasingly obvious that his conflict with Law has gotten to this point, at least on his side. Seeing as Law's actions caused the deaths of two loyal subordinates (one of whom who had been with Doflamingo longer than any other), and forced him into a SadisticChoice where he would have either been hunted down by the Admirals or by Kaido of the Four Emperors, it's to be expected.]]
** [[spoiler:And it's becoming obvious that it's personal from both sides, with Law wanting revenge from a yet unspecified event 13 years ago.]]
* JustBetweenYouAndMe: He seems very fond of sharing his beliefs or relevant information with opponents.
* [[spoiler:KiAttacks: He has awakened Armament Haki and Supreme King Haki.]]
* KickTheDog: Forced Atmos to murder his own crewmates, with Doflamingo cackling all the way.
** [[spoiler: Forcing King Riku to gather all the money of his kingdom, only to have be used a literal puppet to slaughter his own citizens.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: He is a significantly more serious threat than the Straw Hats have faced before [[spoiler: especially being a former World Noble]], [[spoiler: made even more threatening when he not only defeats Law, but shoots him in front of Luffy and co.]]
* KnowledgeBroker: [[spoiler:Part of his third occupation as the underworld figure "Joker".]]
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: [[spoiler:Gives up on killing Smoker after Aokiji makes it clear he won't let that happen. He did ''try'' once, but Aokiji froze him solid (harmlessly) as a warning.]]
* LaughablyEvil: Evil alright, but at least it's fun to watch him.
* LegitimateBusinessmensSocialClub: Ran one for the World Nobles for a time. [[spoiler: It was a huge slave ring centered around selling slaves to the Nobles, so they would ignore almost everything else he did. Such as sell weapons to pirates on the side.]]
* LightningBruiser
* [[spoiler:ManBehindTheMan: Behind Caesar, Vergo and Law, even though Law clearly had his own agenda from the start and Kaido is the man behind him.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: Organizes a tournament with the prize being [[spoiler:Ace's devil fruit]] so he could distract Luffy from his mission at Dressrosa.
* MeaningfulName: His namesake, Don Quixote, is an iconic dreamer, in stark contrast to Doflamingo's insistence that dreams are just that, dreams. Ironically, he does share one connection to Don Quixote. Neither of them realize that their beliefs are merely a product of their own insanity.
** [[spoiler: And yet, Monet's dying thoughts suggest that Doflamingo ''does'' have a dream of his own... he wants to become the next Pirate King.]]
* MightMakesRight: Firmly believes this as demonstrated by his speech at Marineford about who becomes justice.
* MysteriousPast: [[spoiler:The ability to fake his resignation and fool the entire world goes way beyond his power as a ''Warlord''. The only people capable of doing such a thing are the '''''World Nobles'''''. Just who the hell is this guy?]]
** As it turns out, [[spoiler:he's one of the [[AristocratsAreEvil Celestial Dragons.]] Or at least he ''used'' to be one. Doflamingo admits he no longer has that status, but considering how the World Nobles can ''literally'' do whatever the hell they want, it makes you wonder what happened that caused him to ''lose'' that status.]]
* NighInvulnerable: He has not taken any visible damage from a ''single'' attack thus far, and that includes being shot with a missile and being frozen solid by Kuzan, the latter of which has been a death knell to every single other person affected by it. [[spoiler: DD's no-damage record has ''finally'' been revoked by Law, who managed to make Doflamingo bleed with a tiger claw-like attack. [[CurbStompBattle It doesn't end well for Law.]] ]]
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Apparently based on French singer [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/michel-polnareff.jpg Michel Polnareff]].
* NotQuiteFlight: [[spoiler: His Devil Fruit power allows him to swing from clouds.]]
* NotSoStoic: He has been shown to be annoyed before, like during his first appearance when he was summoned to Mariejois, but never outright angry. [[spoiler:That is, until Law defeated Vergo, revealed his own plans with the special weapon [=SAD=], and boasted that he's going to ruin whatever schemes he has and his influence in the world. That is the first time he's seen visibly enraged]].
** [[spoiler: Also when he didn't hear Monet's response as she had suffered a fatal blow to the heart by Caesar Clown, prompting a very out of character moment of him rushing to Punk Hazard alone]].
** [[spoiler: Then Law gives him an ultimatum: Either step down from his position as a Warlord and face the Marine Admirals, but getting Caesar back, or staying a Warlord, but facing Kaido's wrath for not being able to provide him with any more Smiles. Forget the SAD thing, ''this'' is when he got '''really pissed off'''.]]
** [[spoiler:It continues with chapter 712 when he loses his calm demeanor after Fujitora attacks both him and Law with meteors. It seems the stress of the last arc and this one has really gotten to him.]]
* [[spoiler:OhCrap]]: [[spoiler:When Law reveals that he's set him up so that his options involve either stepping down and getting the Admirals on his ass or staying put but losing his bargaining chip with Kaido (the absence of which will almost assuredly get him killed by an enraged Kaido), this is his initial reaction before he begins to flip out.]]
** [[spoiler: Except for the fact that this was all a ploy to lure in Law.]]
** [[spoiler:Another one when he realizes that the "Lucy" running around the colosseum is ''not'' Luffy anymore, who is currently rampaging his way in his castle.]]
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Most of the things he does are for monetary gain, and when something is looking like it isn't going to be profitable, he [[NothingPersonal ditches it and anybody tied to it]].
** [[spoiler:Somewhat debatable however, as Monet implies that Doflamingo does aspire for something ''other'' than monetary gain: to become the Pirate King.]]
* {{Outgambitted}}: For someone who is a mean player of XanatosSpeedChess, he sure as hell didn't count on Law throwing a massive SpannerInTheWorks merely by [[spoiler: one-shotting Vergo and swapping Smoker's heart with Monet's before handing it to Caesar]].
** He also didn't count on [[spoiler: Law blackmailing him. See Sadistic Choice below]].
*** In turn, [[spoiler: Law didn't count on him feigning compliance with his blackmail conditions as a way of luring him into a trap.]]
* [[spoiler:PapaWolf]]: [[spoiler: What does he do after Monet's voice unexpectedly falls silent? Jumps out of a four storey building to fly over to Punk Hazard from Dressrosa to deal with whoever stopped her]].
** [[spoiler: He [[DisproportionateRetribution crushes entire islands]] for taking advantage of Baby 5's inability to refuse requests.]]
* PeoplePuppets: He has the power to take control of people, and manipulate their movements while making hand gestures as if controlling a marionette's strings. Whether this was the result of a Devil Fruit power or not remained unconfirmed for ''11 years'' until the Dressrosa arc confirmed he ate the Ito Ito no Mi (String String Fruit).
* PerpetualSmiler: It's a big deal when he's not smiling.
* PsychoticSmirk: What an unnerving smirk he has.
* PsychoForHire: He's the less sane member of the Warlords.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: His old crew, and most people he employs seems to be this. [[spoiler: Even his timeskip employees are all kinds of quirky - one actively tries ''several attempts on his life'' and Doflamingo just goes about like nothing is happening]].
* RazorFloss: He has the Ito Ito (String String) Fruit which can act as not only this, but a sky wire to attach to clouds for travels. He's also fond of playing PeoplePuppets with the strings. Considering he has a vast empire (both literal and underground) and many connections and moles in Marines and World Government, it's a StealthPun - he's the man pulling the strings in both figurative and literal level.
* RealMenWearPink: His oversized, feathery, and ''very'' pink overcoat. His tropical-styled shirt might count too. He probably wouldn't look out of place in ''MiamiVice'' if he ditched the jacket.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:After receiving a SadisticChoice by Law, Doflamingo reaches Punk Hazard returning the decapitated heads of Baby 5 and Buffalo to their captured bodies, and ruthlessly mowing down the Marines, all while demanding the Straw Hat Pirates. He was also going to beat Smoker to death, and would have succeeded if not for Aokiji intervening.]]
* [[spoiler:RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: He is the king of Dressrosa. He forfeituring this title along with his position as a Warlord was just a ruse. It was only permitted because ''he is a former Celestial Dragon'', born from a line of one of the 20 Kings who formed the World Government.]]
* [[spoiler:SadisticChoice: After Law captures Caesar, he gives him a ultimatum of quitting the Seven Warlords. If Doflamingo remains a Warlord, he doesn't get Caesar back, leaving him unable to create Smiles. If he can't provide Kaido with SMILE, he'll face the Emperor's wrath, and get his ass handed to him. On the other hand, if he steps down from his position as a Warlord, he gets Caesar back and can continue providing Kaido with Smiles, but the Marines, and especially the Admirals, won't stand idly by anymore. Definitely stuck between a rock and a hard place. He steps down from the Warlords and decides to take his chances with the Admirals.]]
** [[spoiler: [[TakeAThirdOption Except it was actually a ploy to trap Law and the Straw Hats]]. He managed to fool them into thinking he had stepped down from his position so he could lure them into a trap.]]
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: [[spoiler:His whole scheme of quitting the Seven Warlords, then claiming it was a mistake and thus still retaining his position, was no simple feat. As he considers this, Law realizes that only someone with connections to the Celestial Dragons could pull off such a large-scale deception without any consequences.]]
** [[spoiler:ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: He doesn't ''have'' connections to the Celestial Dragons... '''''[[WhamLine he is one]]''''' (well, technically a former one, but it still leaves him with enough power to do crazy stuff).]]
* SinisterShades: The shades themselves are even shaped sinisterly.
* SillyWalk: Walks with a bowl-legged waddle in his first appearance.
* SlasherSmile: More like Slasher Sneer, or Slasher Smirk.
* SocialDarwinist: During the battle of Marineford, he delivers one particularly {{Badass}} HannibalLecture about how MightMakesRight.
-->'''Doflamingo:''' ''"Pirates are evil!? The Marines are righteous?! Ha! These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war will always grow up with different values! Therefore, those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! Justice will prevail, you say!? ''Damn right'' it will! And that's because whoever wins this war becomes justice!''"
* TheSociopath: Has incredible charisma and manipulative skills, but has no concern for anyone if they don't prove to be profitable.
* [[spoiler:TakeAThirdOption: After being given the Sadistic Choice by Law, Doflamingo attempted to find Law and the Straw Hats by flying to Punk Hazard and attacking Smoker, demanding where they were. Coincidentally, Brook thought Doflamingo would reject both options and attempt to kill them. Though it failed thanks to Aokiji, Doflamingo had a back up plan: use his authority as a World Noble to fake his resignation]].
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Goes to great lengths ''not'' to do this when he finally conflicts with the Straw Hats, having learned from the mistakes of those before him. However, once he gained the upper hand, he starts falling prey to this, something that [[spoiler:Law]] calls him out on in chapter 724.
-->[[spoiler:'''Law''']]: "Will you be one of the countless many... that have come to regret underestimating them?"
* [[spoiler:VillainousBreakdown: As Law's plan continued to succeed during the Punk Hazard arc, topped off with the Sadistic Choice above, Doflamingo pretty much lost it, went into an immediate UnstoppableRage, and ran roughshod on G-5, slaughtering {{Mooks}} and beating ''Smoker'' to near death, all while demanding the heads of the Straw Hat Pirates and Law. The only reason he didn't succeed in killing Smoker was because of Aokiji. He still show shades of it, as he seems more susceptible to losing his cool when things don't go his way, such as when Fujitora attacked him unexpectedly. The fact that Law was the one instead of Luffy to drive Doflamingo closest to this point is notable deviation from the standard formula of the series.]]
* WildCard: For the World Government, he acts on his own whims and could care less for their issues. Only coming to their call if it's something that interests him (such as the War with Whitebeard). [[spoiler: In fact the way he got his position was largely through blackmail by intercepting ships with kingdom offerings to the Celestial Dragons.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: While it's unknown whether or not he would do this personally, [[spoiler:he did facilitate the kidnapping of many children for Caesar Clown's experiments, and then had Vergo cover them up]].
* XanatosSpeedChess: [[spoiler:He didn't lose his cool even when Caesar Clown, Vergo and Monet were defeated. He instead simply ordered Monet to blow up the island after Baby 5 and Buffalo retrieved Caesar. When he found out that the island didn't blow up, he decided to go there himself. He only started to lose his cool when he learned that the Straw Hats and Law managed to leave the island with Caesar in their hands before he reached Punk Hazard.]]
** [[spoiler:Until he pretended to forfeit his decision as Warlord, and got Law to the rendezvous point at Green Bit with Caesar Clown.]]
* YouHaveFailedMe: To Bellamy. [[spoiler:Though, Bellamy didn't die from the wounds and went on to get stronger while still loving Doflamingo.]]
** [[spoiler: And he pulls it on him ''again'', this time for failing to kill Luffy ''before he even has a chance to.'' Though the way Dellinger puts it, it seems like he was going to have Bellamy killed off regardless if he succeeded or not since he's apparently an "eyesore"]].
** He also later does this to one of his peons in Momonosuke's flashback.

[[folder:"Pirate Empress" Boa Hancock]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Hancock_armchair_5532.jpg
-->[[ScrewTheRulesImBeautiful "Whether I kick a kitten... Tear off your ears... Even slaughter innocent people... The world will never cease to forgive my actions! Why, you ask? Why, it is because I am beautiful!"]]

->Child Voice: KanaeIto (JP)
->Adult Voice: KotonoMitsuishi (JP)

The sixth of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to be introduced. Hancock is the Empress of the isolated Amazon Lily and captain of the Kuja Pirates. Renowned throughout the world for her beauty, she puts on the appearance of being distant, aloof, and, well, a JerkAss of the highest order, spoiled and selfish, prone to looking down on others. Of course, she's not above exploiting her reputation for all it's worth, as she causes most people to completely lose their composure and turn into gooey, love-struck morons.

However, she has a FreudianExcuse as her past was not a pretty one. She was at first a normal young girl who, at an early age, witnessed Gold D. Roger's execution, and later hung out with her sisters Marigold and Sandersonia and the Kuja pirates. At age 12, while sailing with the Kujas, the three sisters were captured by slavers. After that, the three pre-teen girls spent four ''hellish'' years under the thumb of [[AristocratsAreEvil the World Nobles]], who among other things forced them to eat Devil Fruits, in her case the Love-Love Fruit (''Mero Mero no Mi'') which allows her to turn people who lust after her into stone, and branded them like cattle. Being branded as slaves is a constant shame, and she would rather die than let it become known. When Hancock was sixteen, a man named Fisher Tiger appeared and while his goal was simply the liberation of the fishman slaves, he freed as many as he could without discrimination. The sisters later were taken in by Elder Nyon, Raleigh and Shakuyaku, and returned to the Kuja pirates; to not let them know the truth, they said that they had killed a Gorgon and thus were punished with their brands, gaining fame as the Gorgon Sisters. The psycholgical damage, however, had already been done.

She has also fallen madly in love with series protagonist [[ChasteHero Monkey D. Luffy]], creating some hilarious scenes together. After all, watching a renowned Ice Queen fawn like a school girl over the completely love blind Luffy whenever he appears is pretty ridiculous.

Her former bounty was 80,000,000 berries.
-----
* AbsoluteCleavage: With her normal outfit.
* AccidentalMarriage: Luffy, please never, ''ever'' hug and offer a vaguely romantic sounding promise to a hot, semi-delusional Amazon when she is madly in love with you. She will think you two are now married.
* AccidentalMisnaming: Luffy didn't get her name right at first, calling her "Hammock". Once he finally gets it right, she nearly faints out of happiness.
* ActionGirl: She ''really'' lives up to her title. She is considered one of the mightiest warriors in all the seas and hands down, the strongest woman alive... with the probable exceptions of Big Mom, and maybe Catarina Devon.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her eyes are brown in the manga. In the anime, they're a navy-blue color.
* {{Adorkable}}: '''ONLY''' whenever she interacts with Luffy.
* AllergicToLove: Or in her case, love causes physical illness.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Height? Check ([[AllThereInTheManual 191 cm]], for the curious). Dark hair? Check. Beautiful? Check. Aloof/graceful attitude? Check.
* AnimalMotifs: The snake, being beautiful and vain. She also resides on an island where serpents are the pet of choice.
* AntiquatedLinguistics
* AscendedExtra: She's the second character after Luffy from ''OnePiece'' who is included to the ''VideoGame/JStarsVictoryVS'' character roster. What makes it really impressive is the fact that no other character from ''OnePiece'' was included in this game, until Akainu is revealed in this game. Not even the other ''Straw Hats'', yes, not even ''Zoro'' are in this game, yet. And not only that, Hancock is the second ''fighting'' [[Manga/MedakaBox female]] character despite not even a main character like [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Rukia]] or [[Manga/{{Gintama}} Kagura]] or [[Manga/ToLoveRu Lala]] who are just supporting characters in this game.
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: Yep.
* {{Badass}}: As of chapter 560, the reason she got the title of Warlord of the Sea is revealed to be more than the result of her Devil Fruit, [[spoiler:as Smoker's Jutte ''and'' face can testify]].
** BadassAdorable: The adorable side isn't as prominent as in other characters in the series, but she does have moments where she looks pretty damn cute.
** BadassCape: Two of them, each with a slightly different design, and the only items in Hancock's wardrobe that are neither [[FormFittingWardrobe form-fitting]] nor {{stripperiffic}}. But it sure helps her look regally intimidating.
* BareYourMidriff
* BerserkButton: Do not, I repeat ''do not'' threaten Luffy's life if she's there to see it.
* BoobsOfSteel
* BrokenBird: Her past as a slave has made her what she is today.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: [[spoiler: She's capable of ''pulverizing'' multiple [[TakenForGranite petrified enemies]], and later a [[MechaMooks Pacisfista's]] head, with ''a single kick from her bare leg'', [[SuperSpeed not to mention]] [[SuperReflexes being insanely fast]] and she was one of the few (including Mihawk and Doflamingo ) to leave unscated from the War. This came as a MeaningfulEcho, since it was constantly stated that strength is beauty for the Amazons and even Sengoku considered her monstrously strong.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: She is jealous of Nami and Robin and declares she loves Luffy more than they ever will ([[PlatonicLifePartners not that they ever will]]).
* CombatStilettos
* CutenessEqualsForgiveness: No matter what she does, she will always be forgiven because she is ''beautiful.''
* CutenessProximity: ''Completely'' averted: she seems completely immune to any kind of cuteness whatsoever, and kicks baby animals as a matter of habit.
* DanceBattler
* DefrostingIceQueen: To Luffy and Luffy alone.
* DoesNotLikeMen: The only exceptions are Luffy and Silvers Rayleigh.
* DragonLady: Possibly. [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]] does seem to have some Chinese influences to it.
* EasilyForgiven: After hearing about her past, Luffy puts aside the borderline MoralEventHorizon moment she just put him through.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Cranked UpToEleven with [[LadyLand an entire]] ''[[LadyLand island]]'' [[LadyLand of nothing but women]] fawning over her, though admittedly they are her subjects. Her beauty is just as effective on regular women, too. And thanks to her Love-Love Fruit power, she uses that affection as a ''weapon''.
* FingerGun: Her Pistol Kiss technique. It even fires heart-shaped bullets.
* ForeheadOfDoom
* FormFittingWardrobe: She only wore two outfits so far, and the second one was only for a very specific purpose at the time. Both of them clung tightly to her curves in almost scandalous ways, and both (yes, even her "conservative" qipao-like dress) have a thigh-high side slit.[[note]]The better for her to [[KickChick kick with]].[[/note]]
* FreudianExcuse: The World Nobles are why she's such a {{Jerkass}}.
* {{Gainaxing}}: Despite being perfectly still all the time she was onscreen, her boobs got ''really jiggly'' during Marineford arc.
* GodivaHair
* GoingCommando[=/=]VaporWear: In the anime's [[AdaptationExpansion expanded adaptation]] of her first and (as of yet) only FuroScene, [[FridgeLogic the only things she discards prior to stepping into the bathing area proper are her cape and two-piece outer clothes, yet she's depicted as completely naked afterwards. Do the math]].
* HeelFaceTurn: It wasn't simply because [[AllAmazonsWantHercules she fell in love with]] [[IdiotHero Luffy]]. This (and the falling in love after) happened after Luffy said he punched out a Celestial Dragon--the world nobles that, at one time, owned Hancock and her sisters as slaves.
* HelloNurse: To date, the only ''OnePiece'' character to be truly immune to her charms is Luffy, due to being an ObliviousToLove ChasteHero.
* HopelessSuitor: Any reasonable chance for Luffy/Hancock got intentionally trampled pretty fast. Not that it's a surprise since One Piece has always been a strictly NoHuggingNoKissing series. Or that it matters at that since Hancock takes literally ''everything'' Luffy says as a declaration of love.
* {{Jerkass}}: She's extremely selfish, arrogant, immature and even cruel. She's willing to go over the MoralEventHorizon just to protect herself. She has one hell of a FreudianExcuse, though. She just [[JerkAssWoobie became the way she is]] [[BrokenBird due to sheer force of trauma.]]
* KiAttacks: She is the master of all forms of Haki and one of the few whom can use the Conqueror's Haki. While it's unknown if her kicks are fuelled by [[InstantArmor Armament Haki]] or simply brute strength, she can hurt and kill Logia types with ease.
* KickChick
* KickTheDog: Played for laughs with examples of [[CuteKitten kitten]]/[[PreciousPuppies puppy]]/baby seal kicking. Not played for laughs with grandma defenestration and having her sisters try to kill Luffy's defenseless friend just to screw with him and almost succeed at it.
** The former, once you find out the connection between Hancock and Nyon, is lessened greatly. It's HilariousInHindsight actually; it isn't so much evil as being a bit of a bitch when you know the person is superhuman and won't be harmed. This is the type of prank Captain Marvel would pull on Supes. The latter, however, ''does'' crank it UpToEleven and becomes a borderline MoralEventHorizon moment.
* LadyInRed: Every outfit she's been seen in so far in the anime.
* LadyOfWar: She fights with graceful, whirling, face-breaking kicks against the strongest pirates in the world and is quite likely the deadliest hand to hand fighter of the Shichibukai.
* LoveHurts
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: She badly misinterprets innocuous actions as signs that Luffy reciprocates her love for him. Her behavior has a uncomfortable resemblance to a certain RealLife psychological disorder.
* MayDecemberRomance: After the timeskip, Luffy is 19. She is [[OlderThanTheyLook 31]].
* MetaphoricallyTrue: After seeing her attack everyone indiscriminately, a Marine asks her whose side she's on. Hancock explains that she agreed to fight Whitebeard, not ally herself with the Marines, and that any man (except Luffy, but they don't know that) before her is an enemy.
* MsFanservice
* NakedFirstImpression: Luffy first met her while she was taking a bath. She was only concerned about the fact that he saw her naked back, though.
* OneWomanArmy: She was in the thick of the war and shown facing wave after wave of the strongest New World and White Beard pirates calling for her blood...and came out without a single hair out of place.
* ProudBeauty: She's ''extremely'' proud of being WorldsMostBeautifulWoman.
* RapunzelHair
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She has long, black hair and fair skin, and is considered to be the WorldsMostBeautifulWoman.
* RunningGag: Her habit of looking down on others so much that it gets reversed and she starts looking ''up''.
** Her habit of kicking away small, cute animals, like puppies, kitten or baby seals, that mysteriously always manage to wind up in her way.
* SamaritanRelationshipStarter: She began to see Luffy differently from other men when he covered the back of her sister while they were fighting so as nobody could see the World Nobles' slave mark on her. Then reinforced when he chose to save Marguerite, Sweet Pea, and Aphelandra rather than benefit himself.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: Her snake Salome can track ships on the ocean floor. Apparently there's nowhere in the world Luffy can go that she can't or won't be able to find him.
* ScrewTheRulesImBeautiful: She believes that she can get away with doing whatever she wants. Why? Because [[MsFanservice she's hot]], and [[GenreSavvy she knows it]].
* SelfProclaimedLoveInterest: She actually thinks she and Luffy are engaged.
* ShesGotLegs: Long and sleek, almost always has at least one of them fully bare to mid-thigh ''at a minimum'', and the anime camera seems obsessed with close-up shots of her fine thighs, especially whenever she sits in her [[{{Stripperiffic}} usual outfit]]. It turns out to be (at least partially) a [[ChekhovsGun Chekhov's Gun]] for her KickChick skills.
* ShippingGoggles: In-universe. In regards to Luffy and his crew.
* ShipTease: When asked by a fan, WordOfGod made all her personal information that dealt with romance--from her astrological sign to her blood type--sync up with Luffy's to be the perfect match, and she is even named after Thomas Hancock, the English inventor who founded the British rubber industry. She should be the perfect match for Luffy... but alas, he is a ChasteHero.
* ShowSomeLeg: This is how she can easily turn her opponents to stone, the only exception being Luffy.
* ShrinkingViolet: No, really. Not that anyone in the world besides Luffy will ever see that side of her, but he's far too dense to even realize the connotations, silly little kid that he is.
* SingleTargetSexuality: She despises all men and is indifferent to most women; however, when it comes to Luffy, she has made it explicitly clear that no matter what the circumstances, even if he was the son of demons, she'd still love him.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Luffy being the nicest guy she's ever met and the fact that he had the guts to punch out a World Noble are the reasons she loves him so much.
* SlaveBrand: The Hoof of the Rising Dragon.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: While not actually a teenager, she tends to act like one around Luffy. Considering that she was MadeASlave when barely 12 or 13 years old, her childish and borderline ridiculous obsession with Luffy's love starts making an ''uncomfortable'' lot of sense...
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: The only female of the Warlords.
* SomebodyDoesntLoveRaymond: When Luffy displayed complete immunity to her beauty, she felt that she could not bear the existence of someone completely invulnerable to her powers, and would collapse dramatically whenever he showed no interest via his normal obliviousness .
* StatuesqueStunner
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Somewhat [[JustifiedTrope justified]] in that, since her primary petrification attack needs her opponents to lust after her, wearing revealing clothing makes a lot of sense.
* SugarAndIcePersonality
* TakenForGranite: Her Devil Fruit power can turn people to stone if their mind is filled with lewd thoughts. As a result of her beauty this includes pretty much anyone in her general vicinity other than Luffy, who is immune thanks to the power of sheer weapons-grade obliviousness. She can even petrify inanimate objects in some cases, for some reason.
* TattooedCrook: Though she's evidently stopped being a crook, she and her sisters bear the "Hoof of the Rising Dragon" on their backs, burned onto them as marks of their slavery to the World Nobles.
* ThanksForTheMammary: Luffy accidentally does this to Hancock when hiding under her dress from the Marines.
* ThinksLikeARomanceNovel: Whenever she daydreams about Luffy.
* UnknownRival: She considers Nami and Robin to be her competition for Luffy's affection.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Although she's not his girlfriend anywhere but in her own mind, Hancock will beat up anyone who threatens Luffy.
* VirginityMakesYouStupid: Played for laughs when Luffy's around.
* WhenSheSmiles: When she is around Luffy, she genuinely smiles in a way that the other Kuja have said is unusual of her.
* WomanChild: Has her moments of this, ''especially'' when it comes to Luffy. Much more apparent in the Anime.
** Even before her crush on Luffy, she still displayed the maturity of a child thinking the entire world revolved around her due to her attractiveness.
* WorldsMostBeautifulWoman: Her Kuja subjects consider her as the most beautiful woman in the world. The rest of the world consider her similarly, only rivalled by the "Mermaid Princess" Shirahoshi.
** Makes sense that she's considered by her Kuja subjects the most attractive woman in that she's also the strongest Kuja warrior, and possibly, strongest woman, period.

[[folder:Sir Crocodile, a.k.a. "Mr. 0"]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Crocodile_Impel_Down_550.jpg
-->"Justice is only for the people who take it."

->Voiced by: RyuzaburoOhtomo (JP), DavidBrimmer (EN, 4Kids), JohnSwasey (EN, Funi)

Crocodile is the second of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to be formally introduced. During his early travels, he eventually became disillusioned and began to view those who sailed for fortune and glory to be two-bit upstarts. He secretly formed a criminal organization called Baroque Works, whose public aim was to [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans take over the prosperous country of Alabasta and create a utopia]]. To accomplish this he worked to undermine Alabasta's King's influence by [[VillainWithGoodPublicity defeating criminals before the army could]], [[GambitRoulette and by exploiting a drought in order to pit the kingdom against an army of rebels]]. His Devil Fruit, the Sand-Sand Fruit (''Suna Suna no Mi''), lets him turn into and control sand, a very useful ability in the desert kingdom.

His former bounty was 81,000,000 berries.
-----
* AlmightyJanitor: While he doesn't have a ''small'' bounty, it is considerably lower than a lot of his fellow Warlords. It was revealed in the series that his bounty wasn't reflective of everything he was capable of, and had the government been aware of his criminal underworld actions, it would have ''at least'' been twice as much.
* AnimalMotifs: The crocodile, keeping monstrous crocodiles as pets and having a scar that resembles a crocodile's smile.
* AntagonistAbilities:
** {{Intangibility}}: Making him difficult to fight with physical force.
** MakeThemRot, by way of stripping a target of moisture.
* ArchEnemy: He has ''more'' than earned Vivi's hatred, that of the Royal Courts, and possibly that of all of Alabasta when his crimes came to light. In fact, he's probably the only person that Vivi desired and attempted to kill. Also, Luffy's [[EasilyForgiven live-and-let-live]] tendencies after meeting his old enemies in the Impel Down Arc ''turned off'' as soon as he saw him again, but it was later subverted as the arc went on, and through battling together in the Paramount War. He himself has [[spoiler:or had]] one in Whitebeard.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Is every bit as powerful (and then some) as he lets on.
* {{Badass}}: Hits the qualification line and keeps on running.
** BadassBaritone
** BadassBoast: Upon seeing Mihawk cut down the only henchman he actually likes, Crocodile takes him on, parrying Mihawk's Black Sword ''with just his hook'', and telling Mihawk to watch out, because "[he's] in a very bad mood right now."
** BadassInANiceSuit: Goes to battle while dressed like a blinged-out mafia don, complete with a ring on almost every finger and a pimpin' green fur coat. In fact, after being broken out of prison by Luffy and Ivankov, he actually takes the time to get similar clothing before making their escape in earnest. He now sports an all-black version of his Alabasta outfit, which is universally considered to be much more {{Badass}} than his old one.
** BadassLongcoat
* BadBoss: Regardless of how well you've served him, it's ''very'' unlikely that you'll survive working for him.
* BigBad: Of the Baroque Works Saga and arguably the most widely recognized in the series.
** ManBehindTheMan: Much of the Baroque Works Saga had his subordinates go after the Straw Hats while he worked in the shadows.
* [[spoiler:BigDamnHeroes: For a man who was so thoroughly portrayed as a monster the first time around, he's really making an effort to invert it here. First, he takes out two Marines about to execute Ace. Second, he takes on Mihawk to buy Luffy time to reach Ace and save Mr. 1. Third, he takes on Admiral "punched a hole through the guy made of living fire" Akainu to rescue Luffy and Jinbe]].
** [[spoiler:This is, more likely, VillainousRescue. Crocodile has made it no secret that his enemy is the Marines, and not Luffy. Once he decided that Whitebeard had become too old and weak to be worth his time, he spent the rest of the battle trolling the Marines. Adding to that, Mihawk cut down the one henchman he actually liked and Akainu's track record was getting way too good for Crocodile's liking. The whole thing reads like one big case of ItsPersonal]].
* BloodyMurder: How he finally met his defeat.
* BondVillainStupidity: Averted, despite the fact that he's one-half a Bond Villain as it is. The first time he fought Luffy, he buried him alive in the middle of the desert; the second time, he ''drained all the water out of Luffy's body''. Only an [[PlotArmor outside interference and blind luck]] saved him, respectively.
* TheChessmaster: Pretty much covers everything he did.
* CigarChomper
* CombatPragmatist: What makes his TouchOfDeath so deadly, besides the obvious reasons, is that he also possesses the ability to teleport (by dissolving into sand, then reforming anywhere he wants). This means he can dissolve and reform right in front of his enemy and grab them with his RightHandOfDoom, oftentimes with his right hand already around them before he starts to reform. Unlike most villains who ''could'' do something like that, Crocodile actually ''does'', and you're going to need some [[PlotArmor insane luck]] to survive it.
* CrazyPrepared: He was prepared for literally every setback to his plan by the Straw Hats and Vivi, even those with the slimmest of chances.
** Even when forced into fighting with his hook (which is very unusual considering he's Logia-type), he has a poisoned backup hook. And if ''that's'' broken, he can eject a knife in its place.
** It is shown very well throughout the Alabasta arc that when the Straw Hats and Vivi had one HopeSpot after another in their attempts to stop the war, that every single time Crocodile already had a counter set in place to crush their attempts. It reached the point where the only way to foil his plans was the ''defeat the man himself''. There wasn't a single setback or hole in his overall plan, and by the end the Straw Hats were reduced to brawling amongst the civil war they failed to prevent while Vivi screamed her lungs out.
*** ProperlyParanoid: At the same time, the precaution is somewhat understandable. His WeaksauceWeakness to all liquids means that his powers are downright useless whenever it rains or he is immersed in water (such as when he is bathing). When you're vulnerable at very inopportune times, compounded with the fact that you're a pirate in world that is ninety percent ocean, paranoia is generally an understandable, appropriate response and character trait.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy
* DishingOutDirt: Of the "sandman" variety. His powers are also associated with "dryness," which means moisture makes him vulnerable... but also that he can suck the water of things (like the earth... or ''a person'') with his right hand.
** BlowYouAway: his ''Sables'', a sandstorm/tornado, and the more compressed version ''Sables: Pesado''
** NighInvulnerable: His Devil Fruit makes him immune to pretty much everything. [[WeaksauceWeakness Unless it's wet, that is]].
*** Ivankov implies that he knows of a third weakness besides water and seastone. Knowing [[CrazyAwesome Ivankov]], it is probably hilarious.
**** Probably hilarious, and if Oda keeps up with his ability to make call backs regardless of how long ago they were, we ''will'' find this weakness out.
** TouchOfDeath: Posseses one of the most deadly powers in the series; he can drain an infinite amount of moisture from anything he touches with his right hand, reducing humans to mummies and anything else to dust. Technically, he doesn't even have to use the hand, as he makes a crescent blade from the same arm that has a similar effect.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:Teams up with Luffy to get out of Impel Down and have a shot at taking out Whitebeard. Somewhat subverted in that Luffy doesn't trust him (and wasn't going to release him at first), but is talked into it by Ivankov, who knows a secret that keeps him in check. Both he and Jinbe seem to be keeping their eyes on him to make sure that he doesn't stab them in the back]].
** [[spoiler:Inverted with Doflamingo, as he refused his assistance to take on Whitebeard]].
** Played straight again in chapter 566, [[spoiler:when he kills the two Marines that were supposed to execute Ace. When Sengoku calls him out on it, asking why he's siding with Whitebeard, he justifies his action by claiming that Whitebeard can be killed any time, but he won't let the Marines have their way]].
** The most shocking part of it all is his (thus far) [[IGaveMyWord unwavering loyalty to his agreement]]. He could have have, on multiple occasions, [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder abandoned his partners in crime]], yet is even going so far as to ''protect them''.
* EvilCounterpart: For Luffy. It is heavily hinted that Crocodile's true dream was to become the Pirate King, and he is now obsessed with sadistically trampling dreams and hopes of those weaker than him. Unlike Luffy, who followed his dream, Crocodile abandoned his, thinking that dreams, faith in others, etc. are all useless, and that the only thing that matters is sheer power, no matter how it is obtained. As a result, he became the complete opposite of Luffy in every way.
** The point about crushing people's dreams is a good one, because that's ''exactly'' what Luffy and crew do to their opponents, [[NotQuiteDead instead of killing them]]. It's less heinous than it sounds from that description, but still...
* EvilLaugh: Most villains in ''OnePiece'' have distinctive laughs, but Crocodile's creepy monotone staccato is, perhaps, the most memorable one.
* EvilPlan: His {{plan}} to take over Alabasta, from beginning to end, as its what drives the arc. It's hinted that he's pulling another one with his decision to go to Impel Down. It involves
** BatmanGambit: Turning the people against the king by making them think he's behind the drought
** GambitRoulette: Some changes events.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Just look at his seiyuu.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Seems like a cool-enough man to have a beer with. 'Tis all an act, though.
* FreudianExcuse: It's been heavily implied there's a reason he went from what was described as being very similar to Luffy in outlook to the cynical {{Jerkass}} he is now, and it's probably a TearJerker.
* ForTheEvulz: Even with his all his intricate plans and important work to do, he still takes time out of his day to torture a determined old man trying to save his destroyed town by sending him regular destructive sandstorms. And his mind raping of Princess Vivi was largely unnecessary, but he still found it highly entertaining.
* FurAndLoathing: And keep in mind that ''he lives in the desert.''
* GeniusBruiser: He's a terrifying giant of a man with one of the more effective powersets even now (and boy, does he know how to use it to full effect), but he's also ''the'' premiere MagnificentBastard of the series.
* GratuitousSpanish: In most of his attacks, and usually combined with...
** GratuitousItalian and GratuitousFrench: "Desert Spada", "Sables", "Desert Girasole", "Sables: Pesado"...
* HandicappedBadass: Both of his hands are pretty badass, but his HookHand is practically a BadassTransplant.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: The destruction of Alabasta was only the surface of his GambitRoulette. If he couldn't find [[spoiler:the Pluton,]] though, he would still take over the country as its new monarch.
* HookHand: It's even golden. [[spoiler:The hook is also removable. Underneath is... [[TheUnTwist another hook]]]].
** [[spoiler:Though the second hook is also poisonous. And underneath ''that'' hook is a dagger]].
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: Though he wasn't actually killed by the attack, Crocodile gets absolutely livid when Whitebeard [[spoiler:is stabbed by one of his misguided crew mates]].
* ItsAllAboutMe
* LackOfEmpathy: "There is nothing more worthless than friendship and trust in this world."
* LargeAndInCharge
* LeftForDead: This seems to be a poor habit of his when he gets too angry with his foes as he does this then, takes off. This lead to his downfall in Alabasta against a {{Determinator}} like Luffy.
* KnightOfCerebus: He's the first villain to give Luffy a NoHoldsBarredBeatDown in their first fight to the point that Luffy could only make him mad and not even hit him properly! Oh, and unlike most villains he's the only one so far to beat Luffy ''twice'' in one arc.
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: Just look at his outfit. Oh, and he prepares a feast for Vivi when he's holding her captive.
* MightMakesRight: Years went by during his time in the seas, before Crocodile came to view strength and military might as the only things in the world that are important, not dreams. To this end, he wished to find [[LostSuperweapon Pluton]] to have the greatest military power in the world.
* MrFanservice: Between the [[EvilGenius brains]], the [[LargeAndInCharge build]], the [[BadassInANiceSuit awesome suits]], or the overflowing [[EvilIsCool cool]], Croc's got a solid female following.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast
** As well, his main man, a [[{{Badass}} previous bounty hunter who is also really tall, super strong, can turn his body parts into blades]], is named Daz Bones.
* NeverSmileAtACrocodile: His obvious AnimalMotifs. He also keep several gargantuan Bananadiles as pets.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: He's a {{pirate}}, [[KnightInSourArmor knight]], [[PimpDuds pimp]], [[DishingOutDirt sandman]], [[BadBoss boss]], {{samurai}}, [[VillainWithGoodPublicity hero]], [[BigBad villain]], [[TheMafia crime lord]], [[HandicappedBadass amputee]], ex-con and [[TheGunslinger cowboy]], [[YoungGun as of the SBS]].
** [[EpilepticTrees Not to mention that he might either be a woman or a crocodile.]]
*** [[PoisonOakEpilepticTrees Or both.]]
* NoMrBondIExpectYouToDine: Prepares a feast for a captured Vivi.
* TheSociopath: Money. Power. Personal gain. That's about it for this piece of trash.
* NotSoDifferent: With Doflamingo. Both had the position as one of the Seven Warlords, [[SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism neither of them believe in dreams]] (especially those seen in the Age Of Pirates), both have little desire [[YouHaveFailedMe to keep subordinates who fail them]], and both are downright sadistic. [[spoiler:However, when Doflamingo offers to help Crocodile kill Whitebeard, Crocodile told him to get out of his face, ''and threatened to kill him'']].
** In a way, he's also similar to Luffy, and when he talks to him, mentions that he was just as naive as him, and even wanted to (and still does want to) become King of the Pirates; the scar on his face may further cement this, as his personality is hinted to have been like Luffy's. In all likelihood, his experiences in the Grand Line changed him.
*** His recent decision to [[spoiler: become a pirate again and head for the New World, meaning that he is once again chasing his dream]] brings him closer to Luffy and even further away from Doflamingo.
*** Not necessarily, [[spoiler:It turns out that Doflamingo has aspirations to become the Pirate King]].
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: In their first encounter, he gave Luffy a few minutes to mess around before swiftly impaling him and [[LeftForDead burying him alive]].
* ObviouslyEvil: Oda tends to draw him appearing more treacherous than any other character in the series. Seriously. If there's a close-up on his face, expect it to be at an ominous angle, with plenty of creepy facial shadows. If he gets beat up, his hair will dangle in front of his face, making him look even creepier. If he's in a good mood, he'll give a SlasherSmile that'll put Doflamingo to shame. Hell, in his last appearance before [[spoiler:the time skip]], he's in a close-up panel giving the most sinister looking SlasherSmile the series has ever seen. Even the anime depicts him as having skin so pale he's two shades of grey away from being a full-blown ''Vampire''.
* OffWithHisHead: Being a [[NighInvulnerability Logia]], this is a minor annoyance to Crocodile.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He can turn entire cities into barren deserts if he wants to, and sometimes [[OmnicidalManiac he does]].
* [[TechnicolorToxin Purple Poison]]: His hidden hook has this.
* SelfRestraint: When Miss Doublefinger and other members of Baroque Works try to [[BreakingOutTheBoss rescue him from prison]], he and Daz Bones decide to stay and go to Impel Down. Both were originally planning on staying in Eternal and Inferno Hell respectively for who knows how long, and left basically because they were bored.
** Which is at odds with how he managed to manage an organization that specifically relies on two man teamwork and keep tabs on the individual members.
* ShapingYourAttacks: "Desert Spada" and "Desert La Spada".
* ShoutOut: Hook for a hand, has pet gators, named Crocodile? He's an obvious reference to Captain Hook from ''PeterPan''.
* SmokingIsCool
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Subverted. Despite being a villain fairly early in the series, Crocodile is one of the most powerful people in the ''One Piece'' world. Even in recent arcs he's fighting quite evenly with many infamous top-tiered figures.
** To hammer the point in, the next "BigBad" was Bellamy. Luffy lost twice to Crocodile and only won the third time due to determination, Crocodile's VillainousBreakdown due to said determination, [[BloodyMurder blood]], and pure dumb luck. Compare that to Bellamy, who was beaten with a single punch, and one that wasn't even stretched at that.
* [[spoiler:TeethClenchedTeamwork]]: [[spoiler:Just because he's working together with Luffy doesn't mean either of them is happy about it, although Crocodile's not one to hold a grudge]].
* TheBattleDidntCount: Seems to have completely disregarded his defeat in Alabasta. He holds no grudge against Luffy (instead planning on using him as a pawn to help escape Impel Down), and when Luffy confronts him about what he did, he simply states that he just doesn't care about Alabasta anymore. Whitebeard on the other hand...
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: With Whitebeard. [[spoiler:He violently turns down Doflamingo's offer to team up against Whitebeard and even saves Ace from his execution so that the World Government wouldn't have the upper hand on Whitebeard. He also becomes absolutely ''furious'' when Whitebeard allows himself to be stabbed by Squad]].
** He does however chooses not to fight him because he too injured and old to fight, a considerable change for when he was causing an old man in Alabasta misery [[EvilIsPetty because of his optimism]].
* TheSocialDarwinist: Displays some more benign aspects of this, Crocodile hates weakness, and people who believe in things without the strength to back them up, this is in opposition to Luffy who will fight for anybodies beliefs, no matter how weak they are.
* TookALevelInKindness: He's gotten considerably better as he got angry [[spoiler:when Mihawk was attacking Das Bonez and when Akainu's track record was getting too good even for his standards]].
* VillainousValor: Crocodile is a guy with no extraordinary physical skills or toughness, and Luffy just managed to pierce his invincible defenses, what does Crocodile do? Stand up, laugh at Luffy and tell me how weak he is before kicking his ass, for the second time. Crocodile has balls.
** As of the war at Marineford, Crocodile has fought: an entire pirate crew at once, a ship full of marines, the strongest man on earth, a man made out of fucking diamond, man with highest known bounty, deadliest swordsman, most dangerous admiral, and the god damned protagonist of the series three times.
*** Upon the conclusion of the war, which consisted of a congregation of the world's most powerful people, many of them actively targeting him, where [[spoiler: Ace and Whitebeard lost their lives]], the Marines were crippled, AND he fought all the above opponents, the only visible wounds he had from all that was ''a popped blood vessel''. Which he apparently has a habit of doing during intense fights, anyway. He was otherwise entirely unscathed, even after directly picking a fight with ''Dracule Mihawk.''
** He's killed anyone who's had the balls to try to humiliate him.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: His front as Alabasta's guardian made him revered in the country he was secretly trying to take over.
* VillainousBreakdown: One of the main reasons why Crocodile lost round three of his fight with Luffy is because he had his ''during'' the fight. Luffy's determination pretty much broke him, to the point that he started foregoing his devil fruit powers in order to match him physically.
* WeaksauceWeakness: He's an amazing strategist and has one of the deadliest powers in the series, but his fruit powers are more susceptible to water and other liquids than other devil fruit users because of the element it uses. It's even weak enough to the point a nice drizzle or being hit with any wet object (such as fists covered in blood, or sweat) will nullify his Logia powers temporarily. Good thing he is prepared for such events by being skilled in other combat arts.
* WickedCultured
* WildCard: Seriously, what ''is'' he going to do next?
* YouHaveFailedMe: The consequences of failing Crocodile aren't pretty: After he heard a report from "Mr. 3" (actually Sanji impersonating him) that the Straw Hat Pirates were still alive during their conversation, he ordered Mr. 2 Bon Kurei to eliminate him. When Mr. 3 escaped this, he had him fed to his Bananadiles (though, amazingly, he escaped alive from that as well). Hell, the Mr. 7 duo were willing to blow up the town center in Alubarna even risking getting caught in the blast, because they feared ''that much'' what Crocodile would do to them if they failed.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Too bad for Ms. All-Sunday, though subverted in that it did work out for her in the end.
** This is surprisingly subverted though, in the case of Mr. 1, who went to Impel Down with Crocodile. As soon as the breakout occurred, he immediately went to his cell for him to be his subordinate again. Now ''that's'' loyalty.

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Moriah_8849.png
-->"Straw Hat... Ughah!... Then you go see for yourself... What a real nightmare is...! In the New World!"

->Voiced by: KatsuhisaHouki (JP)

The fifth of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced. Gekko Moriah resides on a massive island/ship known as Thriller Bark, where he kidnaps unsuspecting travelers and uses the power of the Shadow-Shadow Fruit (''Kage Kage no Mi'') to strip them of their shadows and utilizes them to raise an army of zombies. He believes the undead to be superior to the living, as they can just be replaced when destroyed and do not possess souls. This way of thinking is due to his entire crew being wiped out by the Emperor Kaidou some time in the past.

His former bounty was 320,000,000 berries.
-----
* AmbiguouslyHuman: He's a giant horned albino with a body shaped like a bowling pin.
* AnimalMotifs: The gecko, his clothing and overall features resembling a gecko, and a bat.
* ArchEnemy: [[{{Jerkass}} Kaido]] is his. Also, Luffy and [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] may have become additions to his "enemy-for-life" list.
* AuthorityEqualsAssKicking: Subverted as he used others to fight him, and as soon as he fights, [[spoiler:he's a glorified punching guy]].
* BigBad: Of the Thriller Bark Arc.
* BrilliantButLazy: Moriah is indeed a badass competitor worthy of his title of Warlord. He's also currently a lazy bum whose motto is "You do it!" [[spoiler: which made him rusty.]]
** [[spoiler:BadassDecay]]: Believed to have happened at some point during his BackStory, after he got owned by [[spoiler:Kaido]]. The WG seemed to be somewhat aware of this, since when they heard Luffy, who'd recently caused the collapse of Enies Lobby and defeated Rob Lucci, was at Thriller Bark, they sent Kuma to assist Moriah. He still forced Luffy to throw everything he had to take him down, and still had enough balls to take on Curiel, 10th Whitebeard Division Commander during the Paramount War. [[spoiler:Then he got one-shotted by Jinbe, a fellow Warlord. After the war, he was deemed too weak for his position, and the WG sent Doflamingo and some Pacifistas to eliminate him, but he escaped (though apparently near death).]]
* CastingAShadow: His Devil Fruit lets him manipulate and even steal someone's shadow.
** [[spoiler: AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: Himself in Shadows Asgard form]]
** BadPowersBadPeople: His Devil Fruit works by ripping off people's shadows, also leaving them without a reflection. Oh, and they disintegrate in direct sunlight. He then takes these shadows and either absorbs them to make himself stronger or ''makes an army of zombie slaves''. The zombie doesn't even have the personality and will of the original person it's made from. Honestly, what morally good use could a power like this be put to?
** DualWielding: The scissors he uses to cut off peoples' shadows can be split in two to be used as swords. And if he absorbs the shadows of several swordsmen, he can even become a MasterSwordsman himself.
** ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: His Lizard Horn Spear impaled [[spoiler:even a colossal beast like Oars Jr.]] with ease.
** ImpossibleShadowPuppets: Inverted with his Shadow Revolution, in which he controls the shape of the shadow to change the shape of the body casting it, due to the fundamental law of nature that the object and the shadow must '''always''' be of the same shape. He demonstrated this by turning Oars into a RubberMan and a giant ball.
** LivingShadow: He can animate his shadow, which he calls Doppelman, to fight for him while he lazes around, make a legion of sharp-toothed bats, or a large spear with a lizard-shaped hilt out of said shadow.
** TheNecromancer: Revives the undead by implanting shadows of his victims within them.
** NighInvulnerable: His shadow can be attacked, but will completely reform without much trouble.
** NinjaLog: He can switch locations with his shadow at any time, giving him a defense similar to [[ElementalShapeshifter Logia]] [[NighInvulnerable users]].
** [[spoiler:OneWingedAngel]]: [[spoiler:Shadows Asgard; this also counts as ClippedWingAngel since this form can be defeated by beating the shadows out of him. Also crosses over into TheLastDance territory]].
** ShapingYourAttacks: Can turn his shadow in a flock of bats, a lizard-like spear and anything else he could imagine probably...
** WeakenedByTheLight: People who have had their shadows stolen by Moriah will be vaporised in the sunlight. Although if their shadow returns to them before they're completely vaporized they'll return to normal (see ImpossibleShadowPuppets).
** ZergRush: His Brick Bat technique.
** ZombieApocalypse: His Devil Fruit powers enable him to revive dead bodies by implanting shadows within them. When the Straw Hats showed up he had collected roughly a thousand of them.
** ZombieMooks: He uses his Devil Fruit power to make them in place of a traditional crew.
* CreepyChild: An SBS Question Corner page showing the Warlords as kids reveals Moria was a dick even as a kid (and with horns to boot), but he was more optimistic in expression than he is now. He also mentions that he used to be a very sociable person who relied on his own strength to do things and that he had many good friends, likely within his crew as well.
* EvilAlbino: He's a white skinned, horned giant.
* EvilLaugh: "Kishishishi!"
* {{Expy}}: Possibly of the Disney version of [[Disney/{{Hercules}} Hades]], especially 20 years ago.
** When he was younger (and still had a crew), he looked like a goofier version of Ryuk from Death Note.
* FlunkyBoss: A non-video game example, as he prefers to have his underlings do the work for him. [[spoiler:His first fight with Luffy has him literally sitting on his ass, laying out, and offering commentary while Luffy tried, and failed, to get past Moriah's shadow]].
* [[spoiler:FreudianExcuse]]: [[spoiler:After his TrueCompanions were wiped out, he began avoiding new attachments and surrounding himself with completely replaceable -- and nigh-indestructible -- zombies]].
* {{Gonk}}: Is he even supposed to be human?
* GoodScarsEvilScars: His entire face and neck seem to be sliced vertically in half and stitched back again. Although 20-odd years ago, he had considerably fewer stitches, implying that it's more likely just a [[FashionVictimVillain fashion choice]].
* GuardianEntity: See LivingShadow
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His Shadow Asgard move. Yeah it turns him into a giant and give him more strength. [[spoiler: But it also makes him a bigger target and collected all of the shadows in one place for the heroes. What's more since he was weakened after being pummeled during the fight against Oars. He didn't have the strength to keep them in his body, having to alternate between fighting Luffy and trying to keep the shadows from escaping which eventually leads to his defeat.]]
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: Not even taking into consideration [[spoiler: losing his Warlord status and nearly dying because he'd become too weak]], just compare his current self to how he [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/3/37/Young_Moria.png used]] [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/5/59/Kid_moria.PNG to be]].[[spoiler: Having all of his TrueCompanions slaughtered and his chin torn off ''really'' fucked him up.]]
* HornedHumanoid: He's one of the three giant characters to have some.
* {{Jerkass}}: Although his minions are very loyal to him, all he cares about is his giant, Oars, and even that's because he values him as his trump card against Kaido. He also seems to be an ass to everyone he contacted with.
** You can blame Kaido for that.
* LargeAndInCharge: So very much to the zombies, but is weak compared to the other Warlords. [[spoiler: Not anymore.]]
* MadeOfIron: He may lack strength, but think about it: he got up after being totally pummeled by ''Nightmare Luffy'', alias Luffy with the skills and fighting power of 100 people combined to his own. He got up (though after some time), went OneWingedAngel and then [[spoiler: survived two [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Gum Gum Giant Jet Shell]] in a row ''and'' a '''falling tower''' before finally fainting.]] He may not be good in direct combat, but he surely has one hell of a stamina!
* ManChild: He spent at least half of his screen time during the Thriller Bark Arc acting like this. [[FromBadToWorse Then he got serious]].
* MeaningfulName: "''Gekko''" is Japanese for "moonlight" and also refers to his AnimalMotif, the gecko. Moria is a very creepy and dangerous location in [[Literature/LordOfTheRings Middle-earth]] and, with a different accent stress becomes an old Italian word indicating the deaths of many (usually farm animals) after a plague/draught. Furthermore, from "Gekko Moriah" you can get the word "Komori", bat, his second AnimalMotif.
* MonsterClown: The checkered trousers and ridiculous boots he wears don't exactly fit your typical image of a fearsome necromancer. Plus, the whole attitude.
* ObviouslyEvil: Nothing screams "I'm evil!" more than a demonic appearance.
** He looked even more sinister back in the day when he was thin enough to actually have a jawline, and was also HellBentForLeather, apparently.
* PowerLevels: He is probably the most notable [[AvertedTrope aversion]] of the concept of using bounties as this. He has the second-highest bounty of the Warlords [[spoiler:prior to his removal yet is explicitly the weakest of their number]].
** [[spoiler:He also used shadows as a power level, guessing correctly that Luffy used 100 shadows to become Nightmare Luffy. So to try and one up him, Moria absorbed 1000.]]
* [[spoiler:ScrewThisImOuttaHere]]: [[spoiler:He didn't take the announcement that he [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness had outlived his usefulness]] very well, and skidadled]].
* SlasherSmile: Plastered all over his face, except when pissed or annoyed.
* TookALevelInJerkAss: His SBS appearance, while having a CreepyChild vibe, is clearly the most optimistic looking of the warlords as kids; cue the present where he's an ass to everyone.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: He took it as a personal insult when Kuma arrived to inform him that the WG sent him to help beat Luffy. Moriah insisted he'd defeat the "Straw Hat rookies" himself. Turns out Luffy was much tougher than he anticipated, [[spoiler:which his BadassDecay didn't help in the slightest]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: While he does give off CreepyChild vibes, he does seem to show more optimism than he does now. He also used to do things with his own power and had a lot of friends.
* [[spoiler:VillainousBreakdown]]: [[spoiler:His is one of the most nightmarish in the whole series]].
** [[spoiler: TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: His following rant againts Luffy, stating that he's going to lose all his crew in the New World in his current state. FridgeHorror comes along when you realize that, he's right!]]
*** [[spoiler: Then we had a two-year time skip where all the Straw Hats did was [[TimeToUnlockMoreTruePotential train/prepare.]] Now we'll see just how 'right' Moria was.]]
*** [[spoiler:He's still right. Notice how he said "In your current state" After two years, they're not quite in their current state, are they?]]
**** [[spoiler: Gekko believes that Luffy, like him, will somehow manage to be in a situation where he's forced to watch his friends die out of his own lack of greater power, and seems to imply Kaido is likely the one to do this, meaning he's intimidating enough to justify his description of a "real nightmare"]].
**** [[spoiler: It happened, word by word, with Ace]].
* WithFriendsLikeThese: Out of all the Seven Warlords (or anyone, really), he's the most cordial towards Kuma, ordering his henchmen to shut up and not bother him when he arrived on Thriller Bark and entered his mansion. Though, he quickly lost his temper with him when he explained why he came, expressed that the latter's loyalty to the WG made him wary of Kuma, and took him using his CatchPhrase[[note]]"If you're going on a trip, where would you like to go?"[[/note]] as a challenge to a fight.
* [[spoiler:TheWorfEffect]]: [[spoiler:After losing to Luffy, he's one-shoted by Jinbe and finally kicked out of the group after the war]].
* [[spoiler:YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness]]: [[spoiler:[[ScrewThisImOuttaHere He didn't take it very well]]]].
