* AllergicToLove: Or in her case, love causes physical illness, apparently not an uncommon affliction among the A variation. Kuja Empresses for some reason. It's actually potentially are prone to a form of lovesickness; more specifically, Kuja Empresses become sick when they fall in love, but suppress it out of necessity or other reasons. Surprisingly enough, it's quite lethal. Many of Boa's predecessors former Empresses have died from it, since their royal position and the island's laws prohibit them from being with the person they love. Gloriosa, the former Empress and mother figure to the Boa herself staving off sisters, was one of the symptoms few survivors, since she actually left the island to pursue the man she fell in love. Hancock does the same by actively pursuing Luffy, the only known "cure".and helping Luffy.

The last of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced. Jimbei is a whale-shark [[FishPeople Fishman]] and the captain of the Sun Pirates after the death of Fisher Tiger. Him becoming a Warlord eight years prior to the events of the main story, as well as his more peaceful disposition towards humans, saw the most radical members of his crew split up under Arlong. He is a master of ''Fishman Karate'', a unique martial art that involves the manipulation of water and moisture.

He meets Luffy in Impel Down, being imprisoned there due to his refusal to fight Whitebeard on behalf of the Government, feeling indebted to him due to his declaration of protection of Fishman Island, which spared it from the marauding pirates that often kidnapped Fishmen and Merfolk for sale in the slave trade. Due to these ties towards Whitebeard, as well as his respect for Ace, who he had previously fought, he joins Luffy in the prison break and accompanies him to Marineford, where he helps keep the Strawhat alive after Ace's death.

Two years later he meets Luffy in Fishman Island, and helps him defeat the New Fishman Pirates. Luffy then asks him to join his crew, but Jinbei turns him down for the time being, stating that there was some business he needed to take care of first. This turns out to be severing his ties with the Big Mom Pirates, whom he allied with during the time-skip to keep Fishman Island safe after Whitebeard's death. He meets Luffy and company in Whole Cake Island and helps them crash Big Mom's tea party and rescue Sanji. During these events he officially abdicates his captaincy of the Sun Pirates, intending to fully join the Strawhat Pirates once the situation is dealt with.

His first ever bounty, from before the start of the series, was 76,000,000 Berries. His second bounty was 250,000,000 Berries. His latest reported bounty is now said to be over 400,000,000.

The last self-proclaimed son of the deceased Whitebeard. He became one of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced. Sea during the time-skip to keep Fishman Island safe after timeskip. There's a lot of doubt on whether he is truly Whitebeard's death. He meets Luffy and company in Whole Cake Island and helps them crash Big Mom's tea party and rescue Sanji. During these events he officially abdicates son, but his captaincy of the Sun Pirates, intending to fully join the Strawhat Pirates once the situation strength is dealt with.

His mother and also self-proclaimed lover of Whitebeard, Bucking, accompanies him around, telling him what he should do, with him blindly complying.

His former bounty is of 480,000,000 berries. He currently holds one record for his bounty: Highest Former Bounty for a Warlord.

* {{Acrofatic}}: Jimbei is a big, but nimble fishman.
* AnimalMotifs: The shark, being a whale shark fishman.
* TheAtoner: For allowing Arlong to rampage in the East Blue. Nami even notes how much it was eating him up inside.
* BadassBaritone: Initially with Creator/DaisukeGori, who had a natural tough sounding voice. After Gōri's death, Katsuhisa Houki (who originally voiced the higher pitched fellow Warlord, Gecko Moria) manages to pull it off well.
* BaitTheDog: ''Completely'' inverted! Considering that he was Arlong's former captain and the one who let him run wild in the East Blue, it seemed like Oda was setting Jimbei up to be a major villain. Who would've thought that he would not only be one of the Straw Hats' biggest allies, but also get invited to join the crew?
* BigDamnHeroes:[[spoiler: He appears just in time to free Luffy and Nami, right before Nami is about to be tortured by Charlotte Opera.]]
* BlowYouAway: His ''Karakusagawara Seiken'' creates a shockwave that [[CaptainObvious blows away]] enemies.
* CallASmeerpARabbit: He looks less like a whale shark and more like a guardian lion with gill slits and blue skin.
* CoolOldGuy: He's like a third dad to Luffy.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Although he resembles an oni (traditional Japanese ogre) with a whale shark motif, he's far from a bad guy.
* DelayedCausality: His ''Karakusagawara Seiken''. After throwing the punch the shock wave takes a couple of seconds to take effect. In the anime this is stretched out and has the shock wave build up to its full effect.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: [[spoiler: Oh yes. Besides Luffy, he's one of the only people to stare down Big Mom, (currently the most unstable, psychotic of the Four Emperors), tell her he's not afraid of her, completely NoSell her powers, and rebel against her. This fishman has BALLS!]]
* EasilyForgiven: Nami forgives him for indirectly causing Arlong to make Nami's childhood life a misery. {{Justified|Trope}} in that Jimbei had no intention to let it happen or idea that it would, and Nami had already forgiven Hatchan, another member of Arlong's own crew who did have a more direct hand in the matter, though in his case ''far'' less easily than Jimbei.
* EscortMission: Finds himself on one in Caribou's cover story, in that he finds him in the process of trying to kidnap mermaids ''again'', beats the tar out of him, and then promptly takes him to G-5 so he can imprison him and gain his ''huge'' bounty for the sake of Fishman Island.
* FangsAreEvil: Subverted. He has a mouth full of fangs (though real whale sharks have small teeth), and his lower canines even stick out prominently from his closed mouth, but he's a nice guy.
* GentleGiant: 9'8'' and the nicest Warlord. The trope goes along with his basis; whale sharks are the largest fish, but quite docile.
* GetAholdOfYourselfMan: To Luffy, to make him realise that even if he has lost his brother, he still has to get his crew back together.
* GoodIsNotDumb: His gentleness makes people underestimate his intelligence. He was smart enough to [[spoiler: back off from his request to leave Big Mom's crew, as she only would have willingly let that happen if he had spun [[SadisticChoice her roulette]], which would have very likely killed him and his crew. He instead frees Luffy and Nami when they are captured and decides to openly rebel against Big Mom.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has lightning-shaped scar over his right eye and he's quite noble.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: As he explains to Luffy during their skirmish in the Fishman Island arc, the principle of Fishman Karate is that the user can manipulate water for their attacks, even if that water is in the atmosphere or in a person's body. Which means his very punch can create shockwaves potent enough to hurt Luffy, whose rubber body normally makes him immune to blunt attacks.
* HeroicBSOD: Goes into a brief one when Sanji reminds him about what Arlong did to Nami.
* IKnowKarate: ''[[FantasticFightingStyle Fishman Karate]]'' to be exact. He's often said to be the best Fishman Karateka out there. He can launch a shockwave with his punch, he can manipulate water with Fishman Jujutsu, his RoundhouseKick can deflect the punch of a giant, and he manages to fell a fellow Warlord (Moria) in one shot.
* LargeAndInCharge: He's a whale-shark fishman, so naturally he looms over most normal characters.
* LightningBruiser: Obviously becomes one underwater, but this applies even in land battles. Gecko Moria [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] it: "You're fast for a big fellow!" [[spoiler:He is also able to keep up with Luffy in their brief skirmish, although to be fair, neither opponent really wanted to seriously injure the other]].
* LostInTranslation: His title is a pun on a Yakuza title and the word for a channel. This doesn't carry into English, leading to the "First Son of the Sea" approximation.
* MadeOfIron: No explanation is given on how he survived Akainu's lava fist through the chest; note that Akainu killed the 550,000,000 bounty Ace in a few minutes with the same type of punch.
* MakingASplash: When he finally gets into the water, he uses his karate moves to throw around torrents of water as if they were silk.
* ManlyTears: He cried when his captain Fisher Tiger died, when Ace died, and when Nami told him that she forgave him.
* MrExposition: He's a very knowledgeable man and he often explains pivotal background information on things to Luffy.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He let his hatred for humans get the best of him and wound up indirectly responsible for Arlong comitting his atrocities, which includes causing Nami's tragic past. He feels quite ashamed of this.
* MyGreatestFailure: How he feels about how his becoming a Warlord allowed Arlong to run free in the East Blue.
* NervesOfSteel: Not only is he completely and utterly unafraid when facing down [[TheDreaded Big Mom]] (which [[spoiler:saves him from her TouchOfDeath powers]]), but he even takes a moment to lay down a cup of sake and formally leave her crew with a sincere thank-you. She's so dumbfounded that it actually takes her a brief moment before she tries to kill him again.
* NiceGuy: Despite his somewhat intimidating appearance, he's the nicest pirate warlord there is.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** His actions in sparing Arlong during the breakup of the Sun Pirates ensured that Arlong would enslave Nami's village and make her life a misery.
** At one point during the breakout at Impel Down, he's fighting to take over a Marine battleship alongside Crocodile and Mr 1. He tries to support them with his Fishman Karate, only to wreck the ship instead.
* NormallyIWouldBeDeadNow: As mentioned, ''he takes a magma fist through the chest'' yet turns out just fine after resting up a bit.
* NotAfraidToDie: Jimbei is a man who follows his convictions and [[ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight does whatever he thinks is right]]. After breaking out of Impel Down, Jimbei was willing to lay down his life for Whitebeard for protecting Fishman Island. [[spoiler: When Big Mom demands his lifespan for leaving her crew, her powers fail to work, as Jimbei [[ImNotAfraidOfYou doesn't fear her.]]]]
* NotSoStoic:
** While usually one of the most focused characters in the series, he can occasionally lose his cool, as shown in [[spoiler:how he dealt with Ace's death]]. On a lighter note, see the OhCrap entry below.
** In chapter 650, after telling the Straw Hats some vital information, he gets a face fault at Luffy being more concerned about food. When he berates Luffy for not taking the news seriously and Luffy cheerfully replies that he likes to leave things to chance, Jimbei bemoans to the others how hard it must be to have Luffy as a captain.
* OhCrap:
** His [[CrowningMomentOfFunny face fault after the timeskip]] when he sees Shirahoshi and a wounded Hachi with Luffy.
** A more serious example is shown in the anime, when Sanji reveals to him how badly Nami had suffered under Arlong's tyranny.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: At first, he seems to feel this way with regards to Hody Jones, as he feels if a human (Luffy) were to defeat him, the CycleOfRevenge would create some new tyrant like Jones was when Arlong was defeated. It turns out that he's merely opposed to Luffy beating up Hody without the support of the citizens of Fishman Island. If Luffy can come out of the ordeal looking like a hero to fishmen and merfolk, and not like a domineering human (the kind with which the island has plenty of experience), then Jimbei has no problems whatsoever.
* OnlySaneMan: He and Hatchan are this to both the Sun Pirates (after Fish Tiger's death) and the entire Fishman race so far.
* PacifismBackfire: In sparing Arlong during the confrontation that led to Fisher Tiger's crew splitting up, Jimbei was indirectly responsible for, among other things, Arlong enslaving Nami's hometown and making her childhood a living hell. [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone He does]] ''[[MyGodWhatHaveIDone not]]'' [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone take this discovery well at all]].
* ProngsOfPoseidon: His weapon during his days in the Neptune Army.
* PunnyName: ''Jinbei-zame'' means "whale-shark" in Japanese. Also, he wears a type of traditional Japanese tunic called a ''Jimbei''.
* RedOniBlueOni:
** He's the Blue, Ace the Red.
** He's also the Blue in relation to Arlong's Red. Jimbei decides to take a reasonable approach to help the Fishmen/Merfolk relations to accept the World Government's request to be a Warlord, while Arlong chose to make himself "the wrath of the Fishmen" to humanity. Interestingly, they were both pretty firm Reds in the Sun Pirates, with ''Arlong'' being the calmer one.
* SandInMyEyes: In the anime, he denies shedding TearsOfRemorse after Nami forgives him for indirectly letting Arlong into her life when Luffy (who slept through the explanation) asks why he's crying.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Really, this is what Jimbei is all about:
** In full defiance to Fishman Island's laws, Jimbei [[spoiler:gives blood to Luffy]]. He lampshades it himself while stepping forward, reasoning that since he is a pirate he shouldn't really be expected to follow the rules anyways.
** He refused to answer the World Government's call to fight Whitebeard because his homeland owed a debt to Whitebeard, which leads to him being arrested and sent to Impel Down. But by doing so, he befriends Luffy and defects to help Luffy and Whitebeard in rescuing Ace from his execution.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When he tries to leave Big Mom's crew, she tells him that he has to stay or spin her [[RussianRoulette wheel]] and pay a price. [[spoiler: Jimbei originally is perfectly willing to spin it as he realizes that the price is likely to be his life regardless of where the pointer lands. However, when he knew that the wheel also dictate certain number of his men that also going to be sacrificed, he decides to TakeAThirdOption and back out of leaving long enough to just up and run later. Pedro later commends him for doing so.]]
* SharkMan: Specifically whale shark.
* SkewedPriorities: Small example. When discussing a plan with the Straw Hats on how to face Hody Jones, he stops to ask them what they should name their plan before they actually carry it out.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: He can communicate with whale sharks, a trait that's unusual for fishmen to possess.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Due to different ways you can romanize Japanese, his name can be written as either ''Jinbe'', ''Jinbei'', or ''Jimbei''. The One Piece Databook Green decided to go with "Jinbe", while Viz and Funimation use "Jimbei", which is the spelling used on [[Wiki/TVTropes this very wiki]].
* StoutStrength: He's real stocky, but he's also very strong, capable of throwing really hard punches.
* TakeAThirdOption: Big Mom gives him a choice: Stay with her crew or spin her wheel and pay a price, and then he can leave. [[spoiler: Jimbei ultimately does neither. He refuses to spin the wheel, as he knows the price would certainly cost his and his men's life, no matter where the pointer lands. He then decides to just openly rebel against her.]]
* ThreateningShark: Subverted. He's the ''only'' shark fishman thus far that hasn't been a {{Jerkass}}. He used to be hardcore to the point that even ''Arlong'' used to think he was too brutal, but has considerably softened up, thanks to Koala's innocence and Fisher Tiger's death and final words. Still a threat to his enemies, though.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Of the Warlords, being the only one that isn't cruel, [[AxCrazy out of his mind]], [[{{Jerkass}} a prick]], or [[TrueNeutral not caring about anyone]].
* TheUnfettered: Jimbei is an honorable guy, but he proves he's a true pirate in that he's willing to do the dirty business if he has to. Case in point; [[spoiler: knowing that he and the Straw Hats need firepower, he's willing to disregard Pekoms' wishes and fight Big Mom alongside a scoundrel like Capone Bege if it means that that the Straw Hats get to accomplish their goals]].
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He becomes a Warlord and spares Arlong during the confrontation leading to the dissolution of Tiger's crew, thus causing Arlong to run wild in the East Blue.
* WeWillMeetAgain: Heroic version done twice. First was when Jimbei said he'd see Luffy on Fishman Island. Second, when he said he'll be back to join the Straw Hats.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He was one when he was a member of the Sun Pirates, championing fishman/merfolk rights, and he in particular was especially brutal during their battles with the Marines to the point where even ''Arlong'' thought he was too rough.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: He considers himself useless on land. This is not really true despite him being a ''One Piece'' version of Comicbook/{{Aquaman}} even without water to throw, he is still a huge fishman karate master capable of taking on top tier pirates and marines.
* TheWorfEffect:
** During his YouShallNotPass moment, while Jimbei manages to get a hit in, Mihawk deals with him in a single blow.
** On the giving end of this when he fought against Moria, defeating him with a single blow.
* WorthyOpponent: Considers Ace one, as they fought for five days straight to a standstill.
* {{Yakuza}}: It's in his full title, a translation of which could be "Jimbei, Yakuza of the Sea".
* YouShallNotPass: In the anime, he tries this on Mihawk, who is in the process of curb-stomping Luffy. Keyword being "tries".

The seventh and last of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced; a very powerful Fishman who was indirectly responsible for unleashing Arlong into the East Blue.

Lost his Warlord status after he willingly gave it up in refusal of fighting against Whitebeard during the Marineford Arc.

The last of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced. Jimbei is a whale-shark [[FishPeople Fishman]] and the former captain of the Pirates of the Sun after the death of Fisher Tiger. His becoming a Warlord eight years before the events of the main story saw the crew split up, with one faction headed by Arlong. He is also a master of ''Fishman Karate'', the most skilled user in the series in fact.

He claims to be indebted to Whitebeard, as because of that man's declaration Fishman Island was spared from the marauding slavers that often kidnapped Fishmen and Merfolk for sale in the slave trade. He also has a grudging respect for Portgas D. Ace, having apparently fought him some time in the past. Possibly as a result of this, Jimbei doesn't seem to hold humans in such low regard, or at least isn't as open about it, rather presenting himself as someone who wishes to keep events at a relatively peaceful equilibrium.

Luffy has asked him to join his crew. However, Jimbei turned him down for the time being, stating there was some business he needs to do first. That business is severing his ties to the Big Mom Pirates, and he meets up with Luffy and company in the midst of doing so, helping to arrange the necessary players to crash Charlotte Linlin's tea party so they can rescue Sanji from harm. He left his captaincy with the intention of fully joining up with Luffy at the end of this situation.

* HiddenEyes: Even on the rare occasions when he's not wearing his shades, Oda makes sure that we don't see what they're covering (though we see one eye during his CatapultNightmare). The most ludicrous example is the Chapter 794 cover page, in which he is outright covering his face after lending his shades to a flamingo. The closest we can guess about his eyes is when the Slave Auction House got wrecked pre-timeskip; His Denden Mushi has been shown to wear the same glasses as he does, [[http://imgur.com/KaiOhZP except for this particular instance.]]
