* BiggerBad: He was originally this during the Thriller Bark Arc, as it was his actions that were responsible for making Moriah the villain he had become. He's also been this for much of the conflict since the Straw Hats entered the New World (after Fishman Island), as [[spoiler:both Caesar and Doflamingo, the two most prevalent antagonists post timeskip have both been working for him]], thus making him the driving antagonistic force of the saga thus far. However, as the story progresses, a battle with him seems inevitable: it's likely this'll make him the outright BigBad of the Pirate Alliance Saga, as opposed to the BiggerBad of it's conflict.

The Four Emperors (四皇, ''Yonkou'') are the most notorious pirate captains in the ''{{One Piece}}'' world, who rule over pieces of the New World like overlords, but none of their bounties are known, and they're all independent of one another (neither friends nor foes). Amongst the four, Shanks is the nicest, while it's a toss-up between Linlin and Kaido for the meanest.

The once-dreaded power of the Emperors has been challenged by newer, bolder generations of pirates: [[spoiler:Whitebeard lost his life in a WarArc with the Marines, and his killer, Blackbeard, has officially replaced him; Kaido had one of his islands attacked by Drake (a Supernova); Linlin lost two of her ally ships to Kidd (another Supernova) who has formed an alliance with Hawkins and Apoo (two more Supernovas) to bring one of them down; Monkey D. Luffy (one more Supernova) publicly challenged Linlin for authority over Fishman Island; and Trafalgar Law (both a Supernova ''and'' a former Warlord of the Sea) is hatching a scheme to take down Kaido.]]

-->"Listen up... you can pour drinks on me, you can throw food at me... you can even spit on me; I'll just laugh that stuff off. But... good reason or not, nobody hurts a friend of mine!"

Shanks is Luffy's idol, inspiring him to take up a pirate life, and one of the Four Emperors that rule over the New World. Unlike Whitebeard (or presumably Kaido) he doesn't lord this status over everyone else, preferring to travel to different stops and party, with a special fondness for drinking. When Shanks was younger, he and Buggy were both apprentice pirates in the Jolly Roger Pirate Crew, the crew of the late Pirate King, "Gold" Roger, and clashed with Whitebeard's crew several times. They were subordinate to Silvers Rayleigh, the first-mate of the crew, and spent their time fighting each other. Both of them attended their captain's public execution, where they parted ways to form their own crews. Sometime afterward he became the rival of Dracule Mihawk, and their duels are now legend throughout the Grand Line, remembered even by Whitebeard.

During Luffy's youth, The Red-Haired Crew stopped at his town, and usually went to the town bar. Luffy always used to plead with him to join the crew. Shanks not only refused, but teased Luffy about not being able to swim, and that he's just a kid. Shanks saved his life when a bandit tried to drown him, which cost him his dominant arm, but Shanks said that it didn't matter as long as Luffy was safe. Shanks then gave Luffy his favorite hat, telling him to return it once he surpasses him, and set sail.
-----
* ArtEvolution: Very drastically. The Straw Hats' changing designs can be chalked up to the fact they're still at a young enough age to physically grow, but it's bizarre to see Shanks become so hunky if you're more familiar with his earlier look.
* [[AwesomeMccoolName Awesome McCool]] [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Name to Run Away From Really Fast]]: You DO know what it means to ''shank'' someone, right?
* {{Badass}}: Scaring a Sea King by staring at it? Check. Crossing blades with Whitebeard, the WorldsStrongestMan, and walking away from it? ''Check''. [[spoiler:Stopping a war just by threatening to take down anyone on either side who wants to continue?]] '''Check'''.
** BadassNormal: The fact that he can swim automatically excludes him from being a Devil Fruit user, meaning his {{Badass}}ery is nothing more than a combination of CharlesAtlasSuperpower.
** HandicappedBadass: Even with only his right arm, he's strong enough to stand up to the most powerful pirates in the world. Bear in mind that, by all indications, he's left-handed. Because of this, he doesn't interest Mihawk in sword fights anymore, though Mihawk at least visits him from time to time when there's news that may interest him. And according to WordOfGod, he's still as strong as he was before he lost his arm.
** BadassCape: Wears one, as does the rest of his crew.
* BashBrothers: He wanted to be this with Buggy. Buggy refused.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Higuma learned this the hard way, as he hit Shanks' BerserkButton by threatening Luffy.

* DeathGlare: Even sea monsters are afraid of an angry Shanks staring at them.
* DeusExitMachina: Got one ''off-screen''. Even though he hasn't been in the story lately, he did meet Whitebeard in his last appearance. So when the Whitebeard Pirates go off to save Ace, and Kaidou attempts to take more of a piece of the New World, Shanks blocks him, allowing Whitebeard's rescue attempt to go uninterrupted.
* TheDreaded: His [[spoiler:appearance at Marineford]] is enough to make EVERYONE react with a mixture of shock and alarm, and his threat to fight anyone who wants to keep the battle going is enough to instantly end the violence. There's a ''very'' good reason why he's treated less as a man and more as a force of nature.
* GenerationXerox: Luffy is becoming more and more like him, rather than Roger, although Shanks notices the similarities in the two's personalities. However, Luffy is more passive while Roger [[spoiler:had a violent temper in battle that led (indirectly) to the deaths of both his FriendlyEnemy Whitebeard and his own son]].

* TranquilFury: Considering how cheery Shanks usually is, it's scary when he gets angry.

->Voiced by: KazuyukiSogabe (JP, episode 4), ArunoTahara (JP, episodes 151+), SeanHennigan (EN, Funi)

Shanks' second-in-command and the First Mate of the Red-Haired Pirates. His skills were displayed in the first chapter where he defeats the gang of mountain bandits using only a cigarette and a rifle (used as a club). In his following appearance he looks older and has more scars, but he hasn't lost the edge.
-----
* {{Badass}}: He's Shanks' second-in-command. It's sort of required.
** Also, remember when he [[spoiler:got ''Admiral Kizaru'' to cease his offense by simply pointing a regular gun at him?]]
* CombatPragmatist: Using a hot cigarette butt to blind your opponent definitely counts.
* CoolOldGuy
* GeniusBruiser: According to WordOfGod, he's the smartest guy in the series (smarter than Nami or Kuro).
** Smartest guy in the East Blue Saga, actually. Beating out [[ScienceHero Nami]] and [[TheChessmaster Kuro]] still qualifies him for this trope, though.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: In his later appearance.
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking
* LightningBruiser: [[spoiler:He managed to catch '''Kizaru''' off guard of all people!!!]]
* NumberTwo: To Shanks.
* OneManArmy: Demonstrated in the very first chapter.
* OnlySaneMan: Apparently.
* TheOtherDarrin: After the death of KazuyukiSogabe, Aruno Tahara stepped in as Beckman's new voice.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue Oni to Shanks' Red Oni.

[[folder:Kaido "of the Beasts"]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Kaidophoto_2421.jpg

->Voiced by: N/A

Kaido is the third of the Four Emperors to be mentioned, and the only one who hasn't made an appearance to date. Consequently, he's one of the more enigmatic figures of the series. The deepest insight we have to his character comes from Trafalgar Law, who called Kaido ''the'' strongest "creature" in existence. Not man, "creature," so he's ''at least'' on the same level as Whitebeard.

The first thing we learned about Kaido is that he's the one who sent Moriah over the deep end, so he's far from a pleasant fellow. As a testament to his strength, he tried to make a grab for power by attacking ''Whitebeard'' before he arrived at Marineford, but Shanks prevented him from doing so.

Following the Whitebeard War, Kaido's coming into conflict with a bunch of younger, ballsier pirates. Drake attacked one of his favorite islands just after the WarArc, while [[spoiler:Law's allied with Luffy in order to take him down. At least in part because of that, Kaido's assembling an army of Zoan Users from the artificial SMILE fruits developed by Caesar. Doflamingo, under the alias of Joker, is the one supplying the SMILE fruits to Kaido]].
-----
* {{Badass}}: According to Law, he's on the same level of power as ''Whitebeard'', and it took '''Shanks''' to keep him away. Granted, Shanks emerged unscathed, but details are scarce.
** He also slaughtered Gekko Moriah's crew, completely destroyed his spirit, and did God knows what with his chin.
** [[spoiler:Doflamingo is arguably the strongest member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea (barring perhaps Mihawk), but even ''he'' is scared of Kaido. Note that when placed in a SadisticChoice where he would either have to face the wrath of the Admirals or the wrath of Kaido, he almost immediately chooses the Admirals.]]
* [[spoiler:BadassArmy: One made of artificially-created Zoan fruit users numbering 500, in short an army of beastmen, which may be the reason for his moniker.]]
** [[spoiler: There may be more than this to why he has that name, "The Strongest Creature" meaning he himself must have a powerful Zoan or at least not completely human.]]
*** [[spoiler: [[OhCrap Hell, maybe BOTH.]]]]
* BiggerBad: There's been a lot of buildup around him, lately, so it might be subverted in due time.
* ThereAreNoCoincidences: Kaidou doesn't take ANY chances with threats against his rule. All conspiriters, real or perceived, to be rebelling against his will are killed as examples, and there is no grey area in this line of thinking [[spoiler: and this trope may work against Kaidou because, while currently, the Straw-Heart Alliance's actions are being enacted to deliberatly push Kaidou's berserk button, at the same time as the Dressrosa arc is going down, Caribou poses (well, is forced to pose as, really) as a Revolutionary Comander, Gaburu, to destroy another one of Kaidou's Factories (this one is a weapons factory on KAIDOU'S FAVORITE ISLAND) - In otherwords, when Kaidou gets the bad news, look out World, because NOBODY seemingly conspires together to bring Kaidou down and gets away scot-free... which will [[SelfFulfillingProphecy force the targetted parties]] to band together against him to try and not die.]]
* DoomMagnet: Every time he's mentioned, something bad ''will'' happen (or ''is'' happening).
* TheDreaded: [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] would rather face the wrath of the Admirals than that of Kaido. Let that sink in for a moment.
* EvilOverlord: Kaido seems to have dozens of underlings, allies, and islands under his control, like most of the Emperors. What separates him from all of the others, including Linlin, is that it's implies he's very much a traditional one.
* EvilVersusEvil: Kaido vs. Moriah, though it's implied Moriah wasn't so bad back then.
* [[spoiler:HumanoidAbomination: Despite his human-looking silhouette, notice that Law refers to him as the "Strongest ''Creature'' in the World", with Nami even wondering if he's really a human or not.]]
* KillEmAll: He massacred Moriah's entire crew back in the day, hence why Moriah is the way he is now.
* {{Jerkass}}: The more we learn of him, the worse he seems to be. For comparison, Shanks is friendly as long as you don't piss him off, Whitebeard operates under a JerkassFacade, [[spoiler:Blackbeard genuinely cares about his crew (sans the Level Six guys), and Big Mom transferred her wrath from Fishman Island to Luffy at his behest, and doesn't give a damn about grabbing more power as long as she gets her candy]]. This guy was willing to disrupt the state of the world at a chance of grabbing power from Whitebeard; threw Moria past the DespairEventHorizon by murdering his entire crew, turning Moria into the {{Jerkass}} he is today; and has a temper so legendary that ''[[spoiler:Doflamingo]]'' gives everything up in order to ''survive''. There hasn't been one redeeming thing mentioned about him, ''at all''. In fact, unless his official appearance goes in the opposite direction, he might be in the running for the biggest {{Jerkass}} in the entire series.
* MeaningfulName: His name can translate into "Church" or "Temple". This may or may not be subverted, as we don't know whether or not he has a preacher/knight/temple theme about him.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Look at his moniker. How many of those "beasts" does he have, exactly?
* NoodleIncident: What went down when Shanks confronted Kaido?
** What happened when Kaido fought Moria back in the day?
*** WHAT DID HE DO TO MORIAH'S CHIN?
* SlasherSmile: He's the lower of the two silhouettes when the Emperors are first mentioned, though it's entirely possible they weren't accurate, given Oda's track record with them. From what we've heard of Kaido, though, it's a pretty safe bet to assume he does have one anyway.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Quite literally. The next Emperor shown tends to be more antagonistic than the last. Everyone else has ''some'' redeeming qualities, even if slightly. Kaido doesn't appear to have ''any''.
** As far as his power level is concerned, he was once described as the strongest being next to Whitebeard; defeating him is 30% at best if you're Law and Luffy. You'd have to be if you indirectly make the Admirals look like the ''friendlier'' option in a SadisticChoice.
* StrawVulcan: Subverted. Official translations show that he wasn't concerned about logic or emotion. He saw an opportunity to grab power, and he tried to take it by attacking and claiming Whitebeard's territories while he was busy, causing Shanks to intervene and stop him.
* SuperpoweredMooks: [[spoiler: He has an army of Artificial Zoan Devil Fruit users numbering around ''500'']].
* [[spoiler:WorldsStrongestMan: Law describes him as the strongest "creature" in existence, and that his chances of defeating him, even with his alliance with Luffy, are 30% at ''best''.]]
* YouDontLookLikeYou: You see his picture, right? The anime has ''two'', both of which are completely different not only to themselves, but to the original silhouette. The first gives him [[http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130628024351/onepiece/images/3/38/Garp_Speaks_About_The_Yonko.png an upturned black collar, a cross-shaped nose and crescent eyes]]. The second [[http://static4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130131055555/onepiece/images/d/dd/Yonko_Infobox.png adds wavy hair, V-shaped eyes, a pointier nose and an elongated chin/forehead]].

!! Charlotte Linlin -- "Big Mom".
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Big_Mom_anime_7439.jpg
->Voiced by: ToshikoFujita (JP)

The third introduced of the Four Emperors, Big Mom is the only female member. She offers her protection to islands if they provide enough candy to feed her sweet tooth, but [[DisproportionateRetribution watch out]] if she's not satisfied.

Her notoriety is ''not'' enough to deter Eustass Kid from destroying two of her allied ships after the TimeSkip. Nor was it enough to deter [[spoiler:Monkey D. Luffy]] from personally challenging her for control over Fishman Island, which she accepted.
-----
* [[AFatherToHisMen A Mother to her Men]]: Subverted. Her men call her "mama", but she clearly doesn't give a shit about them.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: She's honestly like something out of a horror movie.
* BadBoss: She [[spoiler:'''ATE''' one of her subordinates]] for no real reason.
* {{Cephalothorax}}: Looks to be one because her head looks too big to be supported by her body.
* DisproportionateRetribution: She's infamous for decimating ''entire islands'' just for not providing enough candy for her. [[NeverMyFault She considers this a perfectly reasonable reaction to someone who failed to hold up their end of a bargain]].
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: It was implied she's not exactly the nicest person around before her proper introduction. What do we see of her in the chapter when she's actually introduced? [[spoiler:She's an utterly massive behemoth, eats her henchmen, and casually has countries torched over not getting her candy]].
* EvilOverlord: Inverted. As long as her SweetTooth is satisfied, she'll leave you alone. If not, you're dead.
* FanNickname: Big Mama, a bit of a {{Mondegreen}} of her title.
* GagLips: Possibly. They're on her Jolly Roger, at least.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Not a real queen, but still one of the most powerful pirates in the world. Even her own crew-mates are afraid of her!
* {{Gonk}}: Very much so.
* HairTriggerTemper: She seems frighteningly easy to piss off, considering that she'll decimate entire islands if they don't give enough candy to her.
* [[spoiler:HollywoodAcid]]: [[spoiler:Her spit/churned-up stomach acid literally smokes and dissolves the ground when it falls on it which may or may not mean she's eaten a Devil Fruit relating to acid.]]
* HumanoidAbomination: From what has been seen so far, she has an oversized head even by OnePiece standards, sports entirely pink eyes and produces acid from her mouth. Her [[spoiler: tendency for cannibalism]] suggests that she isn't entirely human.
* [[spoiler:ImAHumanitarian]]: See BadBoss.
* LargeAndInCharge: While not nearly as big as San Juan Wolf, she is at least significantly bigger than Whitebeard.
* MisplacedRetribution: She [[spoiler:ate one of her subordinates]] because he happened to be nearby when he gave her bad news.
* NightmareFace: She has a rounded witch-like face with a permanent SlasherSmile and [[RedEyesTakeWarning pink eyes]].
* RedEyesTakeWarning: A pink variety, which is an oddity since OnePiece characters focus more on completely white eyes with small black dots.
* SlasherSmile: Seems to be a requirement if you're a villainous Emperor.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: The only one of the Four Emperors to be female.
* SweetTooth: One of the first things we learn of her. [[spoiler:Now that Whitebeard is dead, she's taken over protecting Fishman Island in exchange for lots and lots of candy. Their issues with Hody Jones and Vander Decken halted their supply of sweets to her, so she makes her debut by appearing at Fishmand Island so she can destroy it for missing their scheduled payment of candy.]]
* VillainousGlutton: Infamous for it.
* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler:When Luffy stands up to her in defense of Fishman Island, she decides to pursue him instead, despite being fairly sure that he's just taking the blame to spare them. The fact that he's willing to do so at all impresses her, so it shows that she's not without a bit of honor from time to time.]]
* YouDontLookLikeYou: [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120101192607/onepiece/images/9/9b/BigMomGP.jpg Her initial silhouette]] looks incredibly different from what we've seen of her final design. There's a possibility that this is due to different perspective, one from the front and the other from the lower side.

!!Edward Newgate -- "Whitebeard"
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Whitebeard_4142.png
-->"I am only one man with one heart... call me a demon, call me a monster... but I can't be the strongest forever!"

-->Voiced by: KinryuuArimoto (JP), RBruceElliot (EN, Funi)

Whitebeard, real name Edward Newgate, is the most powerful of the Four Emperors ruling over the New World (the second half of the Grand Line), and the only person to ever battle the Pirate King to a draw. With Roger's death he became the "[[WorldsStrongestMan Strongest Man in the World]]", and this reputation makes him the most feared and respected person in the world.

However, 22 years have passed since the Pirate King's death and, although Whitebeard is still greatly feared, the world is slowly changing and there are those in the Grand Line are looking to rise to the top and take Whitebeard's place. Whitebeard believes that pirates should have at least some sense of morality and honor, and every member of his crew is treated as his child, and they in turn treat him as their own father.

When people say that he has the power to shake the world, they mean it literally, as he ate the Tremor-Tremor Fruit (''Gura Gura no Mi''), which has the power to generate massive shockwaves and cause earthquakes.
-----
* AchillesInHisTent: For the large majority of the Marineford arc, Whitebeard was content to watch things progress until he was absolutely needed. [[spoiler:It was probably to save his strength, given that he was dying from disease at the time]].
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: In his first few appearances in the series, Whitebeard comes off as seeming to think that any decision he makes is the correct one regardless of potential consequences, even brushing off warnings from fellow Emperor Shanks. However, this later turns out to be a JerkAssFacade, as Whitebeard demonstrates that he isn't nearly as full of himself as he would like you to believe. Most likely he wanted to make sure he had a reputation for being fearsome and unreasonable to help keep the islands under his protection safe.
* {{Badass}}: Indisputably the most {{Badass}} character in the series. You could take pretty much every other badass in the show combined and he'd still make them look like a bunch of wimps.
** BadassBoast: '''"''I. AM. WHITEBEARD''!"''' Let's face it, it's all he needs.
** BadassGrandpa: ''72'' years old, but still capable of tearing an Admiral several new assholes.
** BadassLongcoat: Almost as {{Badass}} as his moustache.
** CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He is able to block direct hits from 100 foot giants with ease and get behind Akainu so fast that he didn´t even notice. With his Quake powers, this is ramped up even more. He actually blocked a hit from a giant with HIS FIST.
** BadassMoustache: ''Look'' at that thing! It's wider than his face, perfectly curved, and looks as sharp as a sword. '''''Clearly''''' not a moustache to be trifled with. It's also why he's called "Whitebeard" (the Japanese words for moustache and beard are the same). Also, look at the titular Turn-A Gundam. There's a reason the most powerful Gundam to date shares a mustache with him.
** BroughtDownToBadass: Blackbeard attacks Newgate with his darkness power, gloating about how it will nullify his earthquake ability... quite forgetting that he is facing the 18 foot tall World's Strongest Man with an even longer bisect.
*** [[spoiler:Just before Blackbeard and his crew decided to gun him down, Whitebeard just before attempting to lay a blow, his skin went reddish and steamy, in a very similar way to Luffy's Gear Second]]
* BaldOfAwesome: In his later years, though he covers it with a bandanna.
* BladeOnAStick: He wields a bisento even taller than he is.
** SwordBeam: He can infuse his bisento with the Tremor-Tremor Fruit's powers to send a massive shockwave towards anything he swings it at. You ''do not'' want to be in the way.
* BigGood: Considered as much of a threat as "The Revolutionary" Dragon, Whitebeard was known as "The World's Strongest Man" for being the only one that fought on par with the Pirate King Roger. However he's generally less active nowadays compared to the other two (especially given that one of them is dead). That aside, since pirates are one of the two biggest threats to the World Government, his moral foundation counters and conflicts with the WG's ruthless control.
* CallBack: A Devil Fruit with the power to make tsunamis was first mentioned by Morgan in the very first explanation of Devil Fruits we ever got in-series.
* CaptainColorbeard: Obviously.
* CooldownHug: After his ally, Squad, stabbed him and accused him of selling out his allies thanks to the Marines [[BatmanGambit leaking false information to him]], Whitebeard gives him one, reassures him he would never abandon a single one of them, then charges into the fray to kick major ass.
* CoveredWithScars: Whitebeard is covered with scars on every part of his body. Except his back: He never showed it to an enemy once.
* [[spoiler:DeathByIrony]]: [[spoiler:All he wanted was a family, and one of his "sons" kills him. Admittedly he had already basically disowned the guy, but the point still stands.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Here's the best example. [[spoiler:''Half his face burned off?]]'' Doesn't matter. '''Akainu must die'''.
* [[spoiler:DiedStandingUp]]: [[spoiler:To further prove how badass he is]].
* TheDreaded: Pretty much a given. Whitebeard [[spoiler:when he was still alive]] truly was the WorldsStrongestMan - all while being an old, half-dead, sickly shadow of his former self. Angering him was something that ''no one'', not even the World Government, wanted to do. However, Blackbeard forced their hand, and they had to pool in all their resources, including the Admirals and the Seven Warlords of the Sea, just to ensure that they would ''compete'' in a war against him.
* [[spoiler:DyingMomentOfAwesome]]: [[spoiler:His final action, after spending the previous several chapters being stabbed, shot, bombarded, and having ''half his face melted off by lava'', was to fight Blackbeard one-on-one and [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown own him so thoroughly]] that the ''entire Blackbeard Pirates crew'' had to jump in before he stomped their captain like a bug. And even though all of that finally killed him... it still [[DiedStandingUp wasn't enough to make him fall]].]]
** [[spoiler:He even gets one last moment of awesome in his last moments. Even though he cannot move and is seconds from death, the very last thing he says, broadcast to the entire Sabaody Archipelago, is "One Piece exists!" This one phrase has the exact opposite effect that killing him was supposed to have.]]
* [[spoiler: FaceDeathWithDignity]]
* FacepalmOfDoom: In the entire Marineford Arc, Whitebeard unleashed his Face Quake Attack on 2 giants, Akainu, and Blackbeard. ''None of them came close to successfully tanking it.''
* [[spoiler:FamousLastWords: '''"One Piece exists!"''']]
* AFatherToHisMen: Every pirate in his crew is considered his son, and they consider each other brothers.
** At least one of his captains, Haruta, seems to be a tomboysh girl. And since this habit extends to his allies as well, there are definitely "daughters" like [[ActionGirl White Bay]].
* FromBadToWorse: For the Marines. This line [[spoiler:after Ace's death]] from one of his crew should be a clue: "Oh man, Pops is pissed! '''''EVERYONE GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE''!!!!'''"
* [[spoiler: FriendlyRivalry]]: [[spoiler: With Roger. plenty of dialogue troughout the series implies they had plenty of encounters in the past, and Ace was worried that Whitebeard would be angry once he discovered he was Roger's son. Yet we discover that Whitebeard not only shared a drink with Roger at least once, Roger actually offered to tell him how to find Raftel and what the "Will of D." was.]]
* [[spoiler:AGoodWayToDie]]
* [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice]]: [[spoiler:Whitebeard's final command was to order his allies to fall back, willing to take down the Marines all on his own]].
* {{Homage}}: His moustache, which is near-identical to [[http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090926165945/gundam/images/3/3d/Turn_A_Gundam.jpg the one sported by]] the Anime/TurnAGundam. The fact that they're both the strongest in their respective categories is probably another one.
* HonorBeforeReason: Goes to great lengths to avenge murdered crew members that would be downright insane were it not for the fact that he's, you know, '''Whitebeard'''.
* IWasQuiteALooker: The most recent flashback shows he was a pretty handsome guy when he was young. Of course, he's not so much ugly today as his handsomeness has been replaced by pure {{Badass}}.
* [[spoiler:[[IJustWantToHaveFriends I Just Want To Have A Family]]]]
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: Due to his advanced age, and presumably from all of the injures he's taken over the course of a particularly long lifetime of piracy.
* JerkAssFacade: See ArrogantKungFuGuy above.
* KnightTemplarParent: See PapaBear below for more.
* LargeAndInCharge: Whitebeard is literally ''three times'' larger than the average man, and unlike the other over-sized characters in ''One Piece'' he's properly proportioned.
** A slight subversion in that Oars Jr. makes him look absolutely tiny by comparison.
* LetsGetDangerous: When Whitebeard stands up, you know the shit has hit the fan. When he starts walking towards you... '''''RUN'''''.
* [[spoiler:ManlyTears]]: [[spoiler:Whitebeard gets especially saddened when he realizes that Ace is really going to die]].
* MeaningfulName: [[spoiler:His death]] was the '''gate''' to a '''new''' era.
** Newgate is also the name of a pair of (both long defunct) prisons in the London and the US (the first state prison in the country). Real life pirate William "Captain" Kidd spent some time in the London one.
* OlderThanTheyLook: This man ''does not'' look 72 years old.
* OneManArmy: Let us be blunt. This man did more damage to the Marines than his entire crew and his allies '''combined'''.
** AsskickingEqualsAuthority: ''Definitely'' the strongest person alive. [[spoiler:Not anymore, though. Alive, that is.]]
** CharlesAtlasSuperpower: The most extreme example so far.
** FoeTossingCharge: He's the ''One Piece'' world's response to [[LordOfTheRings Sauron]], it seems.
** GeniusBruiser: Turns out Whitebeard's no slouch on [[TheChessmaster chess playing]]. He saw half of Sengoku's moves during the Marineford Arc coming; had he not, the Whitebeard Pirates and allies would have been finished far earlier than expected. It could also be said that both Sengoku and Whitebeard consider the other their WorthyOpponent in strategy.
** KiAttacks: A confirmed Haki user.
** LightningBruiser: Whitebeard was able to get behind ''a fucking Admiral'' without being noticed. If someone hadn't warned the guy he would have been... no, he ''was'' still turned into paste.
** NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: The only way to describe what he did to [[spoiler:Akainu after he killed Ace]] in the anime. It's almost enough to make you feel sorry for the bastard.
** PersonOfMassDestruction: The Tremor-Tremor Fruit grants him the power to create shockwaves powerful enough to "break the Earth apart". That means earthquakes on land, tsunamis at sea, and god help you if he wants to give your face a taste of that power.
** PhysicalGod: When spoken of, it's less as a man and more as a force of nature. And for ''good reason''.
** SuperpowerLottery: WordOfGod is that the powers of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, a Paramecia-class, are '''no less''' than those of a ''Logia''. Even excluding that, the man is downright impressive.
** SuperToughness: For this man, ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill is the minimum amount of force required to even make him ''flinch''. Sword to the gut? That tickles. Several more? Tch. Cannon to the face? A pebble. ''[[spoiler:Half his fucking face melted off!]]''? Minor annoyance.
** WorldsStrongestMan: Literally referred to as such, and he more than lives up to it.
* OnlyAFleshWound: Refers to his stab wound by Squad, after the latter tries to pull a RedemptionEqualsDeath, as "a little scratch", and [[spoiler:having nearly half of his head burnt clean off by Akainu merely gets him to speak one sentence in TranquilFury mode: "I'm just getting started"]].
* ParentalAbandonment: Implied, because even though [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130602192117/onepiece/images/0/08/Kid_Edward_Newgate.png even as kid he was still amazingly strong]], and could take anything he wanted, he eventually decided the greatest treasure he could own is a family
* PapaWolf: Never kill or threaten to kill a member of his crew, unless you want a war you have a high probability of losing.
** "High probability" if you have the entire planet's military force backing you up. Otherwise It's a guarantee
* [[spoiler:PlotTriggeringDeath: His demise saw the birth of a new era of piracy.]]
* [[spoiler:RasputinianDeath]]: [[spoiler:Half his face melted off, slashed and stabbed 267 times, hit by more than 152 bullets and 46 cannon shots... but when the jacket came off, there was not a single wound on his back, as he ''never'' showed it to the enemy]].
** [[spoiler:If the artwork is to be believed, the total includes every injury he ever sustained, not just his last fight; however, different translations have stated different things. The anime will hopefully provide a definite answer one way or another. Either way, he still took an inhuman amount of punishment in this one battle: the face-melting, no less than four different sword wounds, at least one cannon, had to have been shot by bullets at least one hundred times (which incidentally was the final nail in the coffin), and was already near-dead from a terminal illness to start with]].
** [[spoiler:Technically, there were a few wounds on his back... where the swords went ''clean through'' his front! ''Said swords had been stuck in there for the past ten or so issues''. AnnoyingArrows are nothing compared to Annoying ''Swords'']].
* RatedMForManly: UpToEleven
* RedBaron: He's either "Whitebeard" or "Pops", never "Edward Newgate".
* [[spoiler:RoaringRampageOfRevenge]]: [[spoiler:After Ace's death.]]
* RuleOfSymbolism: Being an "Emperor of the Seas" and [[spoiler:having a Devil Fruit that causes massive tsunamis and earthquakes]] are obvious references to the Greek god Poseidon.
** His bisento may be another one, being a possible parallel of Poseidon's trident.
** So is his extreme PapaWolf mannerism, as Poseidon was quite possibly the most fiercely protective father in the Greek Pantheon.
** Poseidon was also known as the Earth Shaker. Quite suggestive, no?
** The people of the One Piece world fear him because of his earthquake powers. Just like the Japanese themselves have a deep-rooted fear of earthquakes and tsunamis, for obvious reasons.
* [[spoiler:SacrificialLion: One of the few characters to die in One Piece outside of a flashback, and his death was a turning point in the pirate world.]]
* [[ShockwaveClap Shockwave]] [[MegatonPunch Punch]]: He creates shockwaves by punching the air, causing it to ''crack''.
* SphereOfDestruction: He can create a "Quake Bubble" around his fist or the blade of his bisento ForMassiveDamage.
* SuperDrowningSkills: As with all Devil Fruit users he would sink like a stone in water, but he's not stupid enough to allow himself to be put in such a situation.
* ThatsGottaHurt: Getting a face full of his Devil Fruit powers.
* TrueCompanions: For the WorldsStrongestMan, who could have had anything this world had to offer...this is all he ever wanted. He succeeded.
* UnstoppableRage: When the twenty-three Marine ships watching him are instantly annihilated after the news that Ace is about to be executed, you know the World Government fucked up, right? And after [[spoiler:Ace is killed]], he proceeds to [[CurbStompBattle beat the shit out of Akainu]] and ''[[spoiler:cut the entire damn island in half]]''!
* UnwittingPawn: Sengoku tries to make him one by turning his beloved sons against him. [[SubvertedTrope It backfires magnificently]].
** [[spoiler:Blackbeard played it straight, though...]]
* WalkingShirtlessScene: The unbuttoned-top kind.
* WorthyOpponent: To Sengoku. Also, the commander-in-chief of the Marines says he was the best of the pirates.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Since the beginning of the war, Whitebeard was already foot-and-a-half in the grave thanks to his illness. Reason why he took his time to join the fight: his movements were extremely slow and measured, his dodging abilities non-existent as put by Marco; it should have been impossible for Squard to stab Whitebeard, and in several instances he had to stop to catch his breath, [[HollywoodHeartAttack his heart barely working right]]. That rampage was done by a half-blind, half-deaf, arthritic 72 year old shadow of its former self. WorldsStrongestMan indeed.
** You may now shit yourself as you imagine what this guy would have looked like in his prime at full strength and pissed off.
* WriteWhoYouKnow: Is based on an old pub owner Oda used to hang around, and Whitebeard's first line was actually something that man always said. Like Whitebeard, he too had medical problems (i.e. hooked up to medical equipment) and is now dead.

!!The Whitebeard Pirates
The Whitebeard pirates are considered to be the strongest pirate crew in the ''One Piece'' world, as their captain, Whitebeard, is one of the Four Emperors and literally called the WorldsStrongestMan. Whitebeard's crew is segmented into divisions and a lot of the New World Pirates are also allied with him. Both his own crew and the New World Pirates are shown to be fiercely loyal to the pirate captain, and he, in turn, considers every single one of them [[AFatherToHisMen to be his sons]].

!!!Marco "The Phoenix"
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/TV_Tropes_-_Marco_4749.png

-->Voiced by: Creator/MasakazuMorita (JP)

The commander of the first division, he is first seen when one of Shanks' subordinates delivers a message to Whitebeard, and then later when Shanks himself visits their ship, the Moby Dick. Marco is depicted as being a patient and mild-mannered man, often looking rather sleepy and bored. In the past, he helped Ace get acclimated to the Whitebeard Pirates when he was first brought on board.

[[spoiler:By eating a Devil Fruit he has gained the powers of a phoenix. His short confrontations with Aokiji and Kizaru indicate that he may also possess a certain amount of Haki. This was later confirmed by Akainu]].
-----
* {{Badass}}: Other than Whitebeard himself, he's the only one to take on all three of the Admirals on separate occasions during the war, with two of them being BigDamnHero moments for Luffy. This is partly due to his Devil Fruit, which is of a type that's even more rare than the Logias.
** There's also the fact that [[CosmopolitanCouncil the Five Elder Stars]] believe even with [[spoiler:Blackbeard stealing Whitebeard's power]] to add to his already devastating abilities, Marco is one of the only people in the world that has a chance to stopping him.
** Lets put it this way, when you make ''[[TheAce Portgas D. Ace]]'' look weak in comparison, you're this trope.
** SubmissiveBadass: Despite being one of the strongest characters in the series, he was completely devoted to Whitebeard.
* BigBrotherMentor: Marco seemed to fill this position towards Ace. Being the one of the crew members to reach towards Ace and the one that explained the TrueCompanions family dynamic the Whitebeard Pirates. He also has shades of BigBrotherInstinct as when a dismayed Ace screamed at his family why where they virtually sacrificing themselves for him, Marco, normally TheStoic, ''roars'' back everyone needed to know that NOBODY messed with a member of their family, and the Marines would learn that lesson, the ''hard way''.
* ExtremityExtremist: Every one of his attacks so far have been kicks.
* KiAttacks: A confirmed user of Haki.
* LightningBruiser: Fast enough to catch Kizaru off-guard and strong enough to kick him square into a wall from a lengthy distance.
* NumberTwo: He appears to be Whitebeard's right-hand man, giving and relaying orders to everyone until Whitebeard himself entered the fight and then assuming leadership of the Whitebeard Pirates after their Captain's death.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Considering that he was part of Whitebeard's crew 20 years before the start of Luffy's journey, he's got to be somewhere in his late 30s or early 40s, although he looks like he'd be in his 20s.
** If not older. He was part of the Whitebeard pirates 22 years ago, and at that time they were ALREADY a very established and famous crew (this was shortly after the Roger Pirates, their rivals, disbanded) so it's very unlikely he was new. He's probably at least in his late 40s if not older.
*** Although considering he's a phoenix...
* ThePhoenix: ... Duh.
** FauxFlame: WordOfGod states that his flames don't burn or spread like normal flames, instead they're what allow him to heal.
** {{Flight}}: Thanks to his Devil Fruit, and one of the very few characters in One Piece who can.
** GoodThingYouCanHeal: Taking hits and instantly recovering is a large part of his fighting style.
** NighInvulnerable: He's not a Logia, but this power is kind of a given when you're a phoenix...
** TechnicolorFire: Blue (''and'' yellow in the anime).
* SlasherSmile: He's seen sporting one at the beginning of the war.
* TheStoic: Usually. He did lose his cool however, when Whitebeard gets stabbed by Squad.
* TattooedCrook: He has Whitebeard's sign tattooed across his chest.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: The unbuttoned-top kind.
* [[spoiler:YouShallNotPass]]: [[spoiler:After Ace dies, Marco leads all of the remaining Whitebeard Pirates Commanders into an epic example of this trope against Akainu, in order to protect a mentally-shattered Luffy]].

!!!"Fire Fist" Ace

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/250px-portgas_d__ace_anime_infobox_4026.png

-->Child Voice: Creator/DaisukeSakaguchi (JP)
-->Adult Voice: ToshioFurukawa (JP), Jesse Hooker (EN, 4Kids), TravisWillingham (EN, Funi)

Portgas D. Ace is Luffy's older brother [[spoiler:by way of adoption]], and the commander of the second division of Whitebeard's pirate crew, the strongest in the world. Like his younger brother, he is a BigEater and a HeavySleeper, but unlike his brother, he is intelligent, polite, and gracious, much to the surprise of the Straw Hats when they first met him. He is somewhat protective of Luffy, and looks forward to meeting him on the high seas as pirates. However, his different family name hints at something else... [[spoiler:times TWO. As it turns out, Portgas D. Rouge was his mother only, and his father was actually Gold Roger]]. He ate the Flame-Flame Fruit (''Mera Mera no Mi''), allowing him to create, control and transform into fire.

He had a bounty of 550,000,000 Berries.

-----
* TheAce: [[PunnyName Aside from the obvious]], pretty much every character he's been shown interacting with, from the Straw Hats, to Whitebeard, to Jimbei, and even Blackbeard, have mentioned what an exceptional and great guy he is. At the same time, he could be considered a...
** BrokenAce: ''Damn'', this guy has some issues.
* AloofBigBrother: You wouldn't know it at first, but he is this to the young Luffy.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: To Luffy [[spoiler:until his death.]] Luffy never resented him for it -- if anything, he idolized his big brother, seeing as Ace served as his protector and caretaker soon after they first met until Ace left to become a pirate.
* ArtEvolution: While his body remained surprisingly consistent (considering the amount of proportion changes many other characters went through over the years as Oda's style became less cartoony), Ace's face in his modern appearances is drastically different from early One Piece. His jaw is less angular, his eyes aren't as slanted, his mouth is smaller and more realistic, his ears are smaller, and most significantly, his [[BigOlEyebrows bushy eyebrows]] (which were once a noticeable and defining trait) were entirely trimmed down. Compare [[http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120929191151/onepiece/images/2/29/Ace_Alabasta_Arc_Outfit.png this image of him]] to the picture you see above.
* {{Badass}}
* BadassInDistress: After getting captured by Blackbeard and handed over the the World Government, he becomes the focal point for a huge battle as the government publicly announces his execution and provokes Whitebeard into attacking them. Luffy and others also get involved, thus invoking an epic RescueArc as Luffy journeys to [[TheAlcatraz Impel Down]] to rescue him.
* BashBrothers: Ace and Luffy in Marineford kicking ass together. Admit it, you ''always'' wanted to see this since he was introduced.
** One the fillers in the anime (the episode just after Ace was introduced) had the two briefly busting heads against some of the Billons.
** Also in Chapter 584, a young Ace and Sabo took on the Bluejam Pirates to rescue a young Luffy.
* BerserkButton: Insult or harm anyone he cares about about and he won't hesitate to drop you. [[spoiler:Unfortunately this trait leads straight to his downfall, wasting the effort Luffy and his comrades put into saving him]].
* BigBrotherInstinct[=/=]KnightTemplarBigBrother: While he was going to kill Blackbeard anyway for killing Thatch, it was [[BerserkButton his plan to kill Luffy as well]] that [[TranquilFury really ticked him off]].
* BigBrotherMentor: Fills this role exceptionally.
* BloodBrothers: [[spoiler:With Luffy and Sabo. None of them were related of course, but they were very close and even made a ceremony of drinking sake and became brothers.]]
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: Ace's belt has the letter A on the buckle.
* CharacterDevelopment: There's a lot behind that friendly face that you wouldn't expect. Just trace his backstory from him as a child to a rookie on Whitebeard's crew to how he is now.
* CoolBigBro
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Other than the obvious death of Sabo, Ace had a ton of angst over whether or not he should have been born, just because he had the blood of the Pirate King running through his veins. Ultimately, the answer to this question is what ''he'' desired in this life.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Other than continuing to fight Blackbeard, he tried to kill ''Whitebeard''. And even when most people wouldn't even go after his sons, he made at least ''a hundred attempts on his life''. Granted, he failed every time, but it sure takes balls to do that. He later became one of Whitebeard's most loyal commanders.
* [[spoiler:DiedInYourArmsTonight: He dies in Luffy's arms.]]
* [[spoiler:DrivingQuestion: Not for the plot, but for him. Ace's angst over his bloodline lead him to keep on living in order to find the answer to this one question: [[TearJerker Did he deserve to be born?]]]]
* DubNameChange: Known as "Trace" in the 4Kids dub.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: He was quite strong even as a child, to the point of taking down Bluejam with only Dadan at his side. The Flame Flame fruit only made him more of a badass.
* FatalFlaw: Just like Luffy, it's wrath. He couldn't stand Blackbeard getting away with murdering Thatch, so he left to hunt him down against the advice of all of the other crew-mates, which resulted in his capture. Immediately after being rescued, Ace once again ignores everyone else's wishes by stopping to fight Akainu, [[HonorBeforeReason simply because Akainu had insulted the Whitebeard Pirates.]] [[spoiler:At that point, it's a ''literally'' fatal flaw.]]
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Even if this wasn't always the case, Ace fits firmly in the latter category.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler:His name and the fact he was captain of the Spade Pirates: the "Ace of Spades", which means death. Guess what happens to a certain ''major'' character?]]
* GenerationXerox: Funny how even though he has stated to hate his father, he became an infamous and powerful pirate by himself, even turning down the offer of Warlord of the Sea. Subverted that [[spoiler:he wasn't continuing Roger's legacy, but rather serving under Roger's [[TheRival rival]], Whitebeard as a commander.]]
** According to Garp, Ace is more similar to [[spoiler:Roger]] than ''Luffy'', of all people, who's constantly compared to him!
** Also, the fact that Ace [[HonorBeforeReason never backs down from a fight]] was revealed to be a trait that [[spoiler:Roger]] also had, and for the same reasons. Guess it really is InTheBlood.
* [[spoiler:GoOutWithASmile: As any true D. would. He died happy knowing that despite the bad blood in his veins, despite being a "good-for-nothing", he was truly loved. Heartwarming, yet utterly tearjerking.]]
* [[spoiler:TheGwenStacy: Could be this for Luffy, as Akainu's RocketPunch was [[TakingTheBullet meant for him]] and the reason why he got handed over to the Marines is because Blackbeard was coming for Luffy, but Ace got to him first.]]
* HeroicBastard
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: [[spoiler:If you cut out all the angst he had about being Roger's son]], his childhood was this if Luffy's was anything to go by. Note that Ace is just as scared of Garp as Luffy is, and would only stand up to him when it came to Luffy and his dream of being of a pirate. [[TrainingFromHell Not that anyone can blame him]].
* HotBlooded: Played with. Contrary to what one might expect, despite his [[PlayingWithFire ample firepower]] he is one of the more cool-headed characters in the story. That is, unless, you murder one of his TrueCompanions or threaten to hurt his little brother...
* IHaveNoSon: Inverted. Ace totally disavows ''his birth father'', using his mother's name and claiming Whitebeard is the only father he has. [[spoiler:His dad was dead before he was born, anyway]].
* KiAttacks: Capable of using the King's Ambition Haki.
* [[spoiler:KilledOffForReal]]: [[spoiler:With a ReallyDeadMontage to boot]].
* [[spoiler:LukeIAmYourFather]]: [[spoiler:[[EpilepticTrees As many fans theorized]], Ace is NOT directly related to the Monkey family. He is in fact ''Gold Roger's'' son. It is somewhat a variant from the standard deliverance in that Ace already knew who his biological father was, and so did Luffy for that matter. In fact, the only reason this face hadn't come out earlier is because [[YouDidntAsk nobody bothered to ask]].]]
* MenDontCry: Ace would always try to remind the young Luffy of this trope, [[ManlyTears but couldn't back his own tears]] when he read Sabo's last letter to Luffy and himself.
* MrFanservice: [[WalkingShirtlessScene Permanently shirtless]]. ''Permanently''.
** In the anime his fight with Blackbeard includes some pretty gratuitous shots of his toned back and chest.
* NighInvulnerable: Ate a Logia Devil Fruit, so natch. Too bad he had to face someone who could [[BroughtDownToNormal nullify]] that, then someone with [[ElementalRockPaperScissors a superior element]].
* NiceGuy: Although he [[CharacterDevelopment didn't start that way]].
* NomDeMom: He uses his mother's name instead of his father's, feeling he owes her greatly while the fact of who his father is has caused him nothing but grief. [[spoiler:It also served the purpose of protecting himself from his father's enemies.]]
* OneManArmy: He took out multiple Marine ships with one attack, with no effort.
* OrnamentalWeapon: He carries dagger on his belt that he's never actually been shown using outside of a flashback.
* [[spoiler:ParentalAbandonment: Though not by choice. His mother, Portgas D. Rouge, held him in her womb for twenty months in order to hide the identity of his father, none other than the Pirate King Gold Roger, who would be long dead by the time he was born. The act would ultimately cost Rouge her life, but would allow Ace to live and have a relatively safe childhood. It didn't come with some adverse affects, however; Ace had some major angst over his bloodline, struggling with the fact that in the eyes of the world, he wasn't supposed to exist. This left him somewhat bitter and jaded as a kid, and he only really begun to heal when Luffy came into his life. Still, by the time of his death Ace had already disavowed his birth father and declared that Whitebeard was his father and no one else.]]
* PlayingWithFire: He's known as "Fire Fist" for a reason.
* ThePromise: He made one with Luffy when they were children to go out to sea and live their lives free of regrets.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Him being Roger's son]] is a shocker.
* RoyalBlood: The Marines believe he has it, and Sengoku is convinced that Whitebeard thinks so as well.
* RunningGag: His {{Sleepyhead}} trait, plus constantly pulling a dine-and-dash.
* [[spoiler:SacrificialLion: Ace was the first major character to die on screen. His death served, literally, as the turning point of the series.]]
* SinsOfOurFathers: [[spoiler:He is the son of Pirate King Gold Roger and was hunted by the World Government even before he was born in an attempt to rid the world of the bloodline. To the world, Ace's first and greatest crime was ''being born''. No wonder he had so much angst about it.]]
* {{Sleepyhead}}: He's got a RunningGag of falling asleep at random intervals and making everyone around him panic. [[spoiler:Even if he isn't related by blood,]] this trait probably runs in the family.
* TheStarscream: Ace used to be this to Whitebeard. In all fairness to Ace, though, Whitebeard did recruit him by outright kidnapping both him and his crew. Now he's totally loyal to Whitebeard, who apparently has been grooming Ace to be his successor.
* [[spoiler:TakingTheBullet]]: [[spoiler:Take a very fatal hit from Akainu, meant for Luffy]].
* TattooedCrook: His arm has "ASCE" inked on it, with the S crossed out. Apparently, the tattoo artist couldn't spell. On a non-embarassing note, his back proudly displays the Whitebeard Pirate crossbones ([[NoSwastikas formerly a Manji before editors told Oda to change it]]).
** [[spoiler:It was later revealed that the crossed-out S in the ASCE tattoo wasn't a mistake. An S with an X through it was Sabo's Jolly Roger. Oda later drew Luffy, Ace, and Sabo together as adults, and Ace's name was spelled correctly on his tattoo.]]
* [[spoiler:TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth]]: [[spoiler:Played with, as he had a [[TheWoobie troubled childhood due to being the child of Roger and the world hating his father]], with the World Goverment's Absolute Justice doctrine stating that [[InTheBlood even the child of a world-renowned criminal is a threat]]. He even [[GenerationXerox took up a life of piracy because of it]]. However, if you'd met him, he was a well-meaning, easy-going, polite and friendly guy (if a little mischeivous). He was arguably kinder than even ''Luffy''. The world he lived in didn't give him much of a chance to live]].
* [[spoiler:TragicHero]]
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: In-universe: He was given an invitation by the World Government to join the Seven Warlords Of The Sea. He, of course, declined.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Oh, boooooy.
* WhenHeSmiles: You know that it's a big step forward for him when he cracks that big, adorable grin at Luffy and Sabo when they were kids (keeping in mind that Ace didn't have much reason to do so to anyone else).
* TheWorfEffect: Despite being hailed as one of the greatest warriors in the world (see above) his main role in the series has boiled down to being a stepping stone for Blackbeard and a convenient excuse to demonstrate Blackbeard's power. [[spoiler: Then after being set free and kicking ass for about two chapters, he's instantly defeated by Akainu by jumping in front of him to protect Luffy, taking the worst injury ever seen in the series so far]].
** [[spoiler: His BackStory has him essentially beating up an entire town for mocking Gold's Roger's son unknowingly, and defeating a vicious pirate captain at age 10. There's also the fact that he fought with Jinbei for five days straight to a standstill. Unfortunately, the main storyline saddles him with a surprising amount of bad luck in this]].
* WorthLivingFor: [[spoiler:Ace's angst over his bloodline was so bad that the only reason he kept on living was to find out whether or not he deserved to be born. He found his answer when his brother and eventually, the Whitebeard Pirates came into his life, having finally realized where his place in life is. That just makes his death all the more tragic.]]
* YouthfulFreckles: He actually doesn't fall into any of the archetypes though he fit the BrattyHalfPint type like a glove when he was a kid.

!!!"Diamond" Jozu
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/TV_Tropes_-_Jozu_8994.png

-->Voiced by: TakashiNagasako (JP)

Jozu, the commander of the third division, first made his appearance when Shanks' subordinate delivered a message to Whitebeard. When Shanks later came to meet them in person, Jozu commented on his immense Haki, but is shown being unaffected himself. He is a very calm man that seems to care a lot about his crewmates and his captain.

[[spoiler:It is later revealed that Jozu ate a Devil Fruit himself. Because of that, he is able to turn his entire body into diamonds, making him very difficult to hurt]].
-----
* TheBigGuy
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: While he ''does'' have Devil Fruit powers, they should not affect his physical strength. Despite this, he [[spoiler:is shown lifting and tossing a huge ass iceberg many hundreds of times his size (estimated to weigh around a million tons)]].
* [[spoiler:HarmlessFreezing]]: [[spoiler:Averted. Poor guy lost an arm to Aokiji]].
* LightningBruiser: He's well over 20 feet tall, but is incredibly fast.
* NighInvulnerable: [[spoiler:Not to the same extent as other characters, but he ''is'' literally {{made of diamond}}, so..]].
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Jozu? Jose? Joss? Jaws? The One Piece Green: Secret Pieces book finally confirms this with just Jozu.
* [[spoiler:TheWorfEffect: Despite showing capable of blocking one of Mihawk's slashes and wounding Crocodile with a punch, he is quickly 'controlled' for a period by Doflamingo and then quickly removed from the Marineford War in quick order to Aokiji, as the battle moves to the plaza]].
** [[spoiler: That said, he still has more impressive feats than most Worfs, most notably being the first character to prove that, yes, the World's Strongest Swordsman indeed has ''limits'']].

Always calm and polite, he doesn't have a Devil Fruit but is one of the most skilled swordsman in the world, so much so that his prowess is acknowledged by Dracule Mihawk.
